PODOBNIKAR Ivan G. Podobnikar, M.D., age 82, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2001. He was a pioneering and prominent physician who had practiced in Columbus and its surrounding communities since 1958. Preceded in death by parents Louis and Maria of Slovenia and wife Joanne Podobnikar of Columbus. Survived by his beloved son, Ivo Podobnikar of Columbus; 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Ivan was born in 1918 near Ljubljana, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, the oldest of 8 children. In 1938 and 1939 he won the National Accordion Championship in his native Yugoslavia. He began medical studies in 1939 at the University of Ljubljana, only to be forced to escape to Italy because of the occupation of his homeland, where he then received his M.D. degree from the University of Padua, Italy in 1945. He entered surgical training in the province of Travisco, Italy where he stayed until 1948 when world events caused him to lose his Yugoslavian and Italian citizenships. He was taken to a Displaced Persons Camp in Naples, Italy. A year later he was appointed Sr. Medical Officer at the Refugee Camp of Aversa, Italy. A Philadelphia businessman visiting Italy befriended Ivan, encouraging and eventually bringing him to the United States in 1950. He began by working in Philadelphia General Hospital as an orderly and then interned at Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago until 1952. In 1953, he moved to Butte, Mont. where he was a resident, chief resident and later Assistant Director at the Butte Montana Community Memorial Hospital. Dr. Podobnikar became a U.S. citizen in 1955. He spent 1 full year of fulltime post-graduate work in Comprehensive Medicine at the New York University-Bellevue Medical Center where he became interested in Psychiatry. He returned to Montana and in 1957 became Psychiatrist in Charge at the Montana State Hospital. He moved to Columbus in 1958 and completed a three-year residency in Psychiatry at the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital. He obtained his graduate Masters' Degree in Psychiatry from The Ohio State University in 1961. He then assumed the position of Director of Graduate Education and Training at the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital from 1962-1965. During the same time period he also established a parttime private practice. His pioneering work helped enlarge the specialized services available in Logan and Fairfield counties. In 1970 he served 1 year as the President of the Harding Hospital Medical Staff and held the position of Instructor of Psychiatry. He joined Grant Hospital in 1973 where he guided the development and opening of the Psychiatric Department of which he served as chairman from 1973 to 1979. In 1976 he opened the Pain and Stress Treatment Center at Grant. In 1977 he realized his vision of an independent holistic outpatient program for the treatment of chronic pain by establishing The Ohio Pain and Stress Treatment Center. This program, the first in Ohio, graduated over 600 patients. He also founded three other self-standing Institutes focusing on Cancer, Preventative msg richMedicine and Widowhood. He maintained an active practice until 1995. Dr. Podobnikar was a member of numerous professional organizations amongst which were the Ohio Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, Columbus and Franklin County Academy of Medicine, Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Founding member of the American Holistic Medical Association, International Society for the Study of Pain, Ohio Medical Association and the American Academy of Pain Management. He also published several papers and lectured throughout North America and Europe. His philanthropic efforts were diverse but he held a special place in his heart for destitute children in either underdeveloped countries or those torn from their families by the ravages of war. He was a dedicated, caring and compassionate human being whose life personified the words of Theodore Roosevelt - "It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives violently, who errs and comes up short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion and spends himself in worthy cause, who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at worst if he fails at least fails wile daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat". POOLE Patricia "Patty" D. Poole, age 66, went to be with the Lord Monday February 19, 2001. Member of Parsons Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents William (Luella) Gwilym, brother Leroy Gwilym. Survived by husband, Berley; sons, Chuck (Kathy) Schirtzinger and Randy (Tammy) Schirtzinger; daughter, Denise (Doug) Belcher; 19 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn (Don) Wasem and Diana (Mike) Abdon; brother, Donald (Paulette) Gwilym; sister-in-law, Bobbi Gwilym; numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the MAEDER-QUINT-TIBERI FUNERAL HOME, 1068 S. PRIEST Barbara Varin Priest, died on February 19, 2001 at O.S.U. Medical Center. She was born in Indianapolis, Ind. and graduated from Indiana University and taught high school in Ft. Wayne and Indianapolis. She married Robert W. Priest, and they moved to Upper Arlington, where they were residents for more than 50 years. Mr. Priest preceded her in death in 1983. Barbara was a loyal member of Alpha Chi Omega, her college sorority, for more than 65 years, also a docent and later a member of Women's Board of The Columbus Museum of Art. She was a member of Group Y at First Community Church. Barbara was also a manager at Pappagallo Shop where she made many friends. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Priest Bain, Columbus and Nanci J. (Reverend Rodney F. Quainton) Priest, Bloomfield Hills, MI; sister, Carolyn Varin (William E. Sr. M.D.) Copeland, Columbus; and four grandsons, Marshall Coleman Bain, Grant Varin Bain, Austin Wells Bain and Joseph Andrew Priest-Grochowski. In addition, she is survived by nephews, William E. (Valerie) Copeland Jr., M.D., Christopher M. (Constance) Copeland, M.D. of Columbus and Stephen J. (Karen) Copeland, M.D. of Winston-Salem, NC. Relatives and friends will remember with affection her ongoing optimism and winning smile. RADER Mr. Clark C. Rader, Jr., died at the age of 68 at OSU East Hospital of complications following pneumonia. In lieu of calling hours, the family invites you to a celebration of Clark's life at Creative Catering, Rt. 40 West, Hebron at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, 2001. Mr. Rader was born in Gary, Ind. on August 12, 1932 to the late Clark C. Rader Sr. and Grace Laue Rader. His 2 greatest passions, in addition to his family, were cars and the outdoors. He was able to incorporate those passions into his working life. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1956 with a degree in Wildlife Management, and worked in wildlife conservation for a number of years, including positions with the Ohio Division of Natural Resources. Then in 1963, his father, knowing his son's love of drag racing, proposed they build a drag strip on 175 acres of land on Route 40. Together with Mr. Rader's brother Ben, the men built National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Oh. The racetrack was extremely successful, attracting racers and fans from throughout the country. In 1972, the track began hosting the NHRA Spring Nationals, attracting huge crowds to Licking County for the June event. In 1995, the NHRA purchased the track from Mr. Rader and his brother, and Mr. Rader was able to devote his time to his hobbies of collecting and showing antique and muscle cars, as well as watching car races and playing with his grandchildren and other young friends. His storytelling abilities and fun-loving ways attracted friends of all ages to Mr. Rader throughout his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Marcia Deming Rader; daughter, Elizabeth Rader (Dave) Watson of Cleveland, Oh.; son, Jonathan Rader (Debra) of Pickerington; son, Andrew Rader (Shawna) of San Diego; son, Jason Rader of Cape Coral, Fla.; daughter, Tasha DeLeon (Keith) of Charlotte, N.C.; step-daughter, Pam Eichfeld (Rich) of Granville; 5 grandchildren, Karl, Greg, Libby, Alex and Zachary; his brother, Ben (Nadine) of Granville; 3 sisters; as well as many nieces and nephews. RANDALL Maggie Randall, 58, Tuesday, February 20, 2001 suddenly and unexpectedly at the residence. Member Mt. Hermon Baptist Church where she served on the Senior Usher Board. Employee of Adam's Mark Hotel. Preceded in death by grandparents and several uncles. Survived by loving father and mother, Jimmie and Ann Fisher; daughters, April (Raymond) Carter and Shermail Washington; son, William Pete Foster; grandchildren, Tiffany and Tiara Carter, all of Columbus; also a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many many friends. SAVAGE Shirley A. Savage, age 67, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., died Sunday at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, Del. Survivors include husband of 49 years, Floyd R. Savage of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; daughter, Dorothy Neske and husband, Mark of Lewes, Del.; son, Harry Robert Savage and wife, Cynthia Lee of Milford, Del.; brother, Donald David and wife, Ludella of Venice, Fla.; sister, Mary D. McGinnes of Dover, Del.; sister, Katherine Milstead of Columbus, Oh.; sister, Sandra Taylor of Wilmington, Del.; brother, William P. David and wife, Catherine of Dover, Del.; grandchildren, Sammy Savage, Kathy Mitchell, Melissa Mitchell, Stephanie Savage; 7 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Charles Presley David and Alice Katherine Morgan David. Mrs. Savage retired in 1994 after 20 years of service to the Beebe Medical Center as a Cook. Mrs. Savage was Past President of Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Past President of the Delmarva Volunteer Firemans Association Ladies Auxiliary. Member of the New Castle Ladies of the Moose, former Secretary of the Rehoboth Aid Society. She especially enjoyed crocheting, ceramics and needlework. Funeral service will be at PARSELL FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATORIUM ATKINS-LODGE CHAPEL, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes, Del. on Thursday, February 22, 2001 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Charlie Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach. Friends may call at the funeral home 2 hours prior to service. SAYBALL Howard A. Sayball, age 95, of Westerville, Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at Manor Care. Past Worshipful Master, 1968 of Melbourne Lodge #143 F&AM, Melbourne, Fla. Retired from Pan Am at Kennedy Space Center. Preceded in death by wife Annie G. Perkins Sayball. Survived by loving children, Nancy (Ron) Hooper of Elmira, N.Y., Carole Kennedy of Amesbury, Ma. and Sue (John) James of Howard, Oh.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial and committal service will be held at a later date in Newburyport, Ma. Arrangements made by the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, Westerville, Oh.

SHEVLIN John J. Shevlin, 35, died Monday, February 19, 2001 in Mich., where he resided. A graduate of Northland High School. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a BS and was to graduate with his MBA from The University of Michigan. He worked as a Logistics Manager for Technicolor. He is survived by his mother, Martha Shevlin; siblings, Kevin (Vicki) Murphy, Martin (Rosemary) Murphy, Maureen Murphy, Eileen (Bill) O'Dwyer, Ellen Shevlin, Tom (Amy) Shevlin, Bob Shevlin and Michelle Shevlin; nieces and nephews, Keegan and Erin Murphy, James and Monica O'Dwyer, Kelsey and Chloe Shevlin; special great-uncle, Bob Shevlin; numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. STAGE Angela Marie Stage, age 85, of Grove City, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at Grant Medical Center. She was 1 of the original 11 members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church when it started in 1953. She was also a member of the Rosary-Alter Society and the St. Elizabeth Guild. Preceded in death by her husband Jacob, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Angela is survived by her son, Tom (Jodi) Stage of Grove City; grandchildren, Patrick, Ginifer and Beth Stage; sister, Frances Ricci; brother-in-law, Ike (Shelah) Stage; sisters-in-law, Bernice (Dick) Chaddock and Janet (Ed) Fisher. STEVENSON Chester "Steve" E. Stevenson, age 91, passed away February 20, 2001. Avid football lover especially OSU. WW II Army veteran. Preceded in death by wife, Margaret V. after 27 years and son, Jan Reuter. Survived by daughter, Patricia Springer; and son, Wallace Reuter; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. No visitation.
