RAYMOND COFFMAN

Raymond E. Coffman, 66, of Peebles, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at the Adams County Hospital. He was born Jan. 30, 1934, in Sydney, the son of the late Lester and Margaret (Newman) Coffman. Survivors include his wife, Molly Coffman of Peebles; five sons, Douglas Coffman of Indiana, Raymond Coffman II of Dayton, Mark Coffman of Gainesville, Ga., Sydney Blake of Peebles and Erik Coffman of Peebles; three daughters, Gwendolyn Purdue of Dayton, Dawn Coffman of Atlanta, Ga., and Rayeanna Coffman of Peebles; two brothers, Emerson Newman and Donald Coffman, both of Dayton; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Funeral service were held Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Lafferty Funeral Home in West Union, with the Rev. John Niswander officiating. Burial followed in the White Oak Cemetery near Cedar Mills. Visitation was held Sunday at the funeral Home.

NELLIE COLE

Nellie V. Cole, 83, of Blue Creek, died Sunday, June 30, 2002. She was born in Adams County on Aug 12, 1918, the daughter of the late Jack and Minnie (Newman) Piatt. She was a member of the Brush Creek Baptist Church and a homemaker. Surviors include three sons, Hugh Cole of Bluefield, Va., Dean Cole of Zanesville, and Wendall Cole of Blue Creek; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday July 4, at the Brush Creek Baptist Church under the direction of the Beam Funeral Home with Hugh Cole officiating. Burial will follow in the Cole Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, July 3, at the funeral home in West Union. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Memorials may be made to the Brush Creek Baptist Church or the Gideons International.

RALPH COPELAND

Ralph L. Copeland Sr., 72, of 597 Copeland Road, Waverly, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1991, at home. Born Nov. 28, 1919, in Adams County, a son of the late George Franklin and Floena Burns Copeland, and a retired corrections officer at the federal reformatory in Ashland, Ky., he was a former trustee for Pebble Township, Pike County, a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, and a life member of Merritt Post American Legion at Waverly. Surviving are his wife, Viola Vivian Silcott Copeland, whom he married July 2, 1942; two sons, Ralph Lewis Copeland Jr. And William Ernest Copeland, both of Waverly; three daughters, Mrs. James (Rita Ann)  Jones and Mrs. Calvin (Joan Marie) Palmer, both of Waverly, and Mrs. Neil (Susan Jane) Wishinsky, of Brookline, Mass.; a brother, Robert Copeland of Houston, Texas ; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Betty) Robertson of Hillsboro and Mrs. Ralph (Ruby) Dixon of Mt. Orab; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandson. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly, with the Rev. Carl Dunn officiating, and interment in Waverly Evergreen Union Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Merritt Post American Legion. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.

CONNIE COTTRILL

Connie Marie Cottrill, 46, of Mt. Sterling died Friday at Riverside Hospital, Columbus. She was born Oct. 20, 1953 in Clinton County, the daughter of Robert Leo and Ethel Mae Satterfield Grooms. She is survived by her husband, Randy Cottrill, whom she married Aug. 17, 1974; three children, Melicia Renee, James Matthew, and Nathan Loren Cottrill, all of Mt. Sterling; five brothers and sisters, Karen Chandler and Roger Grooms, both of Latham, Rosetta Williams and Robert Grooms, both of Piketon, and Terry Grooms of Peebles. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bainbridge United Methodist Church with Revs. Paul Moots and Terry Russell and Pastor Kenny Smith officiating. Burial followed in Bainbridge Cemetery. Visitation was held 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the Smith-Moore Funeral Home in Bainbridge. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given to the James Cancer Hospital.

MARION CROSS

Marion Donald Cross, 78, of Decatur, died Monday, April 1, at the Adams County Hospital. Mr. Cross was a member of the Decatur United Methodist Church, the Morris-Baldridge American Legion Post 583 and was U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Louise (Satterfield) Cross of Decatur; three sons, Emerson D. Cross of Deltona, Florida, Alan Cross of Stout, and Ben Cross of Aiken, South Carolina; a daughter, Brenda Gonzalez of London; a sister, Mona V. Wagner of Aberdeen; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 4, at the Ellis-Beam Funeral Home in West Union, Rev. James Schroder will officate. Burial will be in the Cherry Fork Cemetery. Graveside services will be conducted by the Morris-Baldridge American Legion Post 583 of Cherry Fork. Visitation is two hours before the service time on Thursday. Memorials can be made to the Russellville Life Squad or the Decatur United Methodist Church.

GEORGE DARLING

George H. Darling of Liberty Twp. died at 1 o'clock this morning. He was married to a Miss Jane Duncan of Bentonville to whom were born four children. He was a soldier in the former war a member of Company F. 70th. O.V.I. He was 62 years old and a member of West Union F. and A.M. Lodge and is buried in Kirkers Cemetery.

STACY DAY

Stacy Walls Day, 97, died June 2, 2001, at the Edgewood Manor in Lucasville. She was born in Adams County on March 3, 1904, daughter to the late Charles W. and Hannah Lillian (Miller) Walls. She owned and operated a beauty shop on Highland Avenue in Portsmouth for many years and after retirement, she was a resident of the Alexanderia House. She was a member of the Christ Community Church, the James Dickey Post #23 Auxiliary of Portsmouth where she served over 50 years in various offices. Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Lorraine Newman of McDermott; three grandchildren, Vera Newman Osborn of Indianapolis, Ind., Charlie Newman and Ann Newman Cable, both of Lucasville; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, Dorothy Henzie and Jean Ann Green, both of Peebles; two nephews, Archie Walls of Dayton, Charles Walls of Louisville, Ky; and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Elza Walls, and her only child, Eldon (Pete) Newman. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 5, at the Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Peebles with Ron Stephens officiating. Visitation was held on Monday evening at the funeral home. Burial followed in the Locust Grove Cemetery.

JAMES DEMINT

James B. Demint, one of our most highly respected fellow townsman, died at his home last Friday night [07 Apr 1911], following an illness of several weeks, from diabetes. The deceased was born August 29, 1845, in Liberty Twp. Most of his life was spent in Adams County. He was united in marriage to Eliza J. Roebuck February 4, 1868. To this union were born four children, two of who are still living, Edward E. of Cincinnati and Mrs. Sarah Willman, of West Union. He had nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. He volunteered in the Army January 20, 1864, as a member of the 56th. O.V.I. and was honorably discharged April 25, 1866. He was converted while lying in his tent reading the Testament which he carried with him all the time he was in the service. He united with the West Union Baptist Church and was baptized April 27, 1867, by Rev. G. W. Taylor. He served as treasurer of the sunday school since March 10, 1888. He served as deacon of the church since April 8, 1893. The funeral was held Monday morning from the home at 10 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. A. K. Murphy, of Rushtown, pastor of the local Baptist Church. The interment was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
