Jane E. Dunham
Saturday, August 21st, 2004
Jane E. Dunham, 90, a lifelong resident of Jefferson before moving in 1984, died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at the Balmoral Assisted Living Center in Palm Harbor, Florida, where she resided.
She was born April 30, 1914 In Jefferson, the daughter of Lewis A. & Eva E. (Hoskins) Dunham and lived here until moving to Illinois in 1984, then moving to Florida in 2001. Miss Dunham was a clerk and administrator in the Ashtabula County Commissioners Office for 37 years, retiring in 1967.
She attended the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Jefferson, was a member of the A. A. R. P. and served as secretary/treasurer of the Northeastern Ohio County Commissioners Assoc., She was a photographer, enjoyed woodworking, did hand colored photos and was an amateur artist.
Survivors include a brother, L. Alfred Dunham of Palm Harbor, Fla., two nieces, Bev Dunham of Palm Harbor, Fla. and Carmen VonDrak of Hickory Hills, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an aunt, Mary Dunham.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 A. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. William Spangler, interim pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 A. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 12200 Fairhill Rd., Cleveland, Ohio 44120, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Anne V. Mellinger
Thursday, August 19th, 2004
Anne V. Mellinger, 91, Footville-Richmond Rd., Dorset Twp., died Wednesday morning at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsville Twp., where she had been a resident the past year.
She was born August 26, 1912 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Emil H. & Britta A. (Bertha) (Danielsson) Shields and has resided in the Ashtabula and Dorset Twp. all of her life. She was the valedictorian of the 1930 graduating class at Ashtabula High School. She was married to Clarkson I. Mellinger on June 15, 1940 in Ashtabula. Mrs. Mellinger worked several years in her husband’s accounting office.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dorset, in her earlier years she was involved with the Dorset Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary and the Jefferson Music Boosters. She enjoyed reading, raising house plants and especially cooking traditional Swedish foods.
Survivors include a son, Clarkson W. Mellinger of Cleveland, a sister-in-law, Wilma N. Shields of Willoughby and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarkson in 2001 and a brother, Henry E. Shields.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Edward Pickard of the First Baptist Church of Dorset officiating. Burial will be in Dorset Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10-11 A. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Dorset, P. O. Box 81, Dorset, Ohio 44032, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Joseph J. Sokaski
Tuesday, August 10th, 2004
Joseph J. Sokaski, 73, Jefferson, died late Sunday evening on the Hospice Floor, Unit 5, at the Erie V. A. Medical Center in Erie, Pa.
He was born November 20, 1930 in Cleveland, the son of the late Joseph & Julia (Gall) Sokaski and has been a resident of the Jefferson area the past 45 years, coming from Cleveland. Mr. Sokaski was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired employee of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa J. (Okray) Sokaski, whom he married on April 7, 1951 in Cleveland, two children, Thomas J. Sokaski of Canton and Laurie J. Shore of Marion, five grandchildren, Jennifer & Justin Sokaski, Courtney, Paul & David Shore, a sister, AnnaMae Graham of Jefferson and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Okray of Cleveland.
No calling hours or services will be held at Mr. Sokaski’s request. Cremation will take place at the Family Care Group Cremation Center with the ashes to be scattered on Mr. Sokaski’s property. Memorial contributions may be made to the Erie V. A. Medical Center, Unit 5, Hospice Floor, Erie, Pa. 16504.
The Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.

Margaret E. Nyzen
Sunday, August 1st, 2004
Margaret E. Nyzen, 90, E. Barrington Dr., Chardon, died Sunday morning at the Blossom Hill Nursing Home in Huntsburg, Ohio following an extended illness.
She was born November 9, 1913 in Austinburg Twp., the daughter of Evon & Emogene (Howard) Berlin and was a resident of Jefferson and Austinburg most of her life before moving to Chardon in 1998.
Mrs. Nyzen was married to Joseph Nyzen, Sr. on August 10, 1937 in New Philadelphia. She was an affiliate of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Her greatest love was being a wonderful mother and enjoyed homemaking, sewing, crocheting, stitching, embroidering, cooking, baking, reading and loved her pets.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph, three children, Joseph A. Nyzen, Jr. of Munson, Janien A. Faulk of Richardson, Texas and Dr. Richard C. Nyzen of Medina, three grandchildren, Alexia Nyzen of Deerfield Beach, Fla. and Robert & Ronald Nyzen, both of Munson, three sisters, Beverly Jerome of Salida, Calif., Idabelle Wilhite of Castro Valley, Calif. & Nancy Newton of San Lorenzo, Calif. and a brother, Howard Berlin of Lake City, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Evangeline Ashman in 1997 and Kathrine Hartz in 1998.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. William L. Offutt of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdake Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6-8 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 12200 Fairhill Rd., Cleveland, Ohio 44120, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Mary Cameron McLean Cornell
Saturday, October 2nd, 2004
Mary Cameron McLean Cornell, 90 of Lenox Twp., died unexpectedly at St. Joseph Medical Center in Warren early Saturday morning.
She was born on November 29, 1913 in Southeast Hartsgrove, the daughter of Angus E. & Francis (Johnson) McLean and has lived in this area all of her life. She was married on Sept. 7, 1937 in Ripley, N.Y.to Homer James Cornell. Mary was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness and also a very talented musician playing the violin, accordion and piano. She was an artist and a nationally published poet. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and embroidery.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Briggs of Jefferson, Jean Allen of Lenox Twp., and Jill Stoody of Celina, 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren, and Sandy Ensell, a dedicated caregiver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer James in 1987, her parents, a sister, Ruth Lyall and a brother, Donald McLean.
Calling hours will be observed on Monday evening from 6-8 P.M. at Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.
Funeral service will be on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. with Elder Cole officiating from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Jefferson.

Raymond S. Cowan
Tuesday, September 28th, 2004
Raymond S. Cowan, 98, died Saturday, September 25th at Jefferson Medical Associates where he had been a resident for the past four years.,p. He was born September 30, 1906 in Waymark, Pa., the son of George & Susan (Littlebrant) Patrick and has been a resident of Jefferson since 1993 moving here from Florida.
Mr. Cowan was retired from Bendix Aviation, of Sidney, NY., where he worked for 30 years as a turret lathe operator. He previously enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling. He was a “jack of all trades” and also enjoyed doing carpentry work. He also ran a parttime business while he was in Florida doing mowing and landscaping.
Survivors include two daughters, DeEtta (Richard) Decker of Conneaut, Darla (Ronald) Harju of Jefferson, 11 grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons, Ronald in 1976, Clinton in 1997 and Lyle in 2004, a sister Leona Lindner and a half brother, Elton Cowan, and his ex wife, Juanita.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Cremation will be held at the Family Care Group Cremation Center.
Contributions can be directed to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home during the memorial service. Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson will be handling the arrangements.

Larry R. "Butch" Lamson
Sunday, September 19th, 2004
Larry R. “Butch” Lamson, 61, St. Rt. 46 North, Jefferson, died unexpectedly Friday evening at his residence.
He was born January 3, 1943 in Warren, Ohio, the son of Melvin & Evelyn (Smith) Lamson and has been a Jefferson resident all of his life. Mr. Lamson was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corp. He was married to Judith E. “Jay” Cui on July 17, 1962 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Mr. Lamson was a heavy equipment operator, working for Koski Construction Co. the past 20 years. He was a member of Local 18, Heavy Equipment Operators Union and enjoyed woodworking and being on his computer.
Survivors include his wife, Judith E. “Jay” Lamson, a daughter, Teresa R. Martonhegyi of Jackson, Mi., a grandson, Jared Martonhegyi and two sisters, Beverly Tanner of Kingsville Twp. and Shirley Bartlett of Monroe Twp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Tracy S. “Sam” Lamson in 1986 and a step-brother, Charles Lamson.
Funeral services will be at 8:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will follow the services at the Family Care Group Cremation Center.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 1-3 and 6-8 P. M. at the funeral home. Committal services for the burial of cremains will be held Friday at 11:00 A. M. at the Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson. Contributions may be directed to the family at 1000 St. Rt. 46 North, Jefferson, Ohio 44047, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.
