Winifred I. Gibbs
Tuesday, December 28th, 2004
Winifred I. (Willard) Gibbs, 89, S. Chestnut St., Jefferson, died Monday evening in the hospice unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
She was born in Atwater, Portage Co., Ohio on June 18, 1915, the daughter of Clifford & Alma (Rhodes) Willard and has been a resident of Jefferson and New Lyme Twp. for 63 years, coming from Portage Co. She graduated from Randolph High School, she attended Akron University where she was awarded the Pixley Scholarship in Voice.. She took voice lessons from John Sien & Burton Garlinghouse. She also attended Ohio State University and graduated in 1938 from Ohio University in Athens.
On April 13, 1941 she married Arland Gibbs at the historic Atwater Congregational Church. They lived in New Lyme Twp. for 19 years before moving to Jefferson. To them were born two daughters, Marjorie Ann & Suzanne Elizabeth.
She began her teaching career in Lenox in the fall of 1938, teaching a “first and second grades” room. She taught for seven and a half years before stopping to have a family.. When her younger daughter was ready for first grade, Mrs. Gibbs returned to teaching in Lenox, taking her daughters with her. In 1960, Mrs. Gibbs transferred to the Jefferson Elementary School where she continued teaching until her retirement in 1973, teaching more than 26 years.
She was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, Ashtabula Co. Retired Teachers Assoc., Ohio Retired Teachers Assoc., Covered Bridge Chpt. #591, O. E. S., a member at large of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ashtabula County Historical Society, Lenox historical Society and the Ladies Literary Class of Jefferson that disbanded in 1979 after its 101st year.
After retiring, Mrs. Gibbs became active in the Jefferson United Methodist Church Women, serving as secretary, vice-president and president. For several years she was on the Painesville District United Methodist Women’s Board, serving as the coordinator of Christian Social Involvement & on the nominating committee. She had served as Church Liturgist and was recently on the Church Historical Committee.
Church activities have always been part of her life. As a girl growing up in Atwater, Winifred was active in the Congregational Church, singing in choirs, attending Sunday school, serving as Sunday School Song Leader, helping with Vacation Bible School, teaching a Sunday school class and serving at monthly Church suppers. In 1954, she returned to sing at the Church’s Homecoming & Rededication Service. In New Lyme, she attended the Presbyterian Church where she taught a Sunday school classs and directed the choir. At the Lenox Federated Church she sang in the choir, taught a Sunday school class and helped with Vacation Bible School.
Mrs. Gibbs was a 63 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She served as Worthy Matron of Emerald Chpt. #96 of New Lyme six times. In 1993, she was appointed Grand Representative of Oregon by Grand Matron, Neva Moreland. In 1994, Mrs. Gibbs and her husband attended Oregon’s Grand Chapter Session in Pendleton, OR. She became a Charter Member of Covered Bridge Chpt., #591, O. E. S. of Rock Creek in 1998.
Collecting was her hobby. She had collections of bells, bottles, miniature shoes, dolls, teddy bears, Jefferson memorabilia, hats and kitchen collectables on which she gave talks and displays. She enjoyed music, reading, cross word puzzles, gardening, playing cards and making cookies for her grandchildren, who considered her the “Chocolate Chip Cooking Queen”.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie (Andrew) Flock of Painesville & Suzanne (Rick) Wludyga of Andover and four grandchildren, James Flock of Cleveland, Scott (Karla) Wludyga of Erie, PA, Robert (Crissy) Wludyga of Andover and Katherine (Luke) Jernigan of Roaming Shores.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Arland in 2000.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman officiating. Cremation will follow services with the burial of ashes in Lenox Center Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 6-9 P. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, where Eastern Star Services will be at 8:45 P. M. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, OH 44047 or Hospice of the Western Reserve, P. O. Box 2010, Ashtabula, OH 44005 or Covered Bridge Chpt., O. E. S., c/o Carol Rich, 3327 Orchard Rd., Ashtabula, OH 44004. Envelopes will also be at the funeral home and church.

Leonard C. Cowles
Monday, December 27th, 2004
Leonard C. Cowles, 91, Ft. Myers, Fla. and formerly of Chesterland & Chardon area in Ohio, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA.
He was born October 15, 1913 in Jefferson, OH, the son of Norman & Maude (Mullen) Cowles.
He was a 1941 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with degrees in Business & Electrical Engineering.
He worked for 33 years as an engineer for Nela Park General Electric plant.
In 1975 he received his teaching certificate from Kent State University and taught several years at the Auburn Rd. Vocational School.
He was a member of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Chardon, where he was one of the founding members.
He also served on the Bishop’s committee. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Church in Estero, FL.
He was also a member of the General Electric Quarter Century Club.
He did so much in life and enjoyed every moment.
He spent his life teaching family, friends, employees and students the important things in life.
He was an inspiration to all who knew him and a true “Good Samaritan” to those who needed help.
We shall all miss him here, but heaven is a richer place with him there.
Survivors include three children, Cheryl (Jim) Saker of Omaha, NE, Christine (Jon) Ewing of Dayton, OH & Bruce (Laura) Cowles of Boiling Springs, PA, eight grandchildren, Jamie, Rob, Jason, Andrea, Cortney, Benjamin, Jordan & Joel, two great-grandchildren and a special friend, Ruth Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Frances, second wife, Shirley & a brother, Raymond.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday at St. Luke Episcopal Church, 11519 Wilson Mills Rd., Chardon, OH, with Fr. John Hayden officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 P. M. at Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson, OH. No visitation will be observed.
Contributions may be made to St. Luke Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 244, Chardon, OH 44024, envelopes will be available at the church. The Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.

Reid H. March
Sunday, December 26th, 2004
Reid H. March, 80, W. Satin St., Jefferson, died unexpectedly late Friday evening at his residence.
He was born November 28, 1924 in Jefferson, the son of Bert O. & Nettie (Valentine) March and has been a resident of Jefferson and Lenox Twp. all of his life.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in World War II. He was married to Cleo C. (Hinkle) Stainfield on May 3, 1958 in Frederick, Va. Mr. March was a retired employee of the RMI Sodium Plant. He enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include a step-daughter, Betty Kowski of N. Olmstead, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Verla Kolehmainen of Jefferson and Frances Kirkland of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Cleo in 1997, two step-sons, Howard Stainfield in 1980 and Roy Stainfield in 2001, a sister, Rose LeKander and a brother, Anson March.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 P. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Gordon Emerson, lay pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 12-1 P. M. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson Emergency Rescue District, P. O. Box 294, Jefferson, Ohio 44047, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Marian E. Lehto
Tuesday, December 21st, 2004
Marian E. Lehto, 86, a resident of Slater Rd. East, Williamsfield Twp. the past eight months, died early Tuesday morning at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren where she had been a patient the past 10 days.
She was born August 25, 1918 in Andover, the daughter of Frank & Cora (Osborne) Steen and has lived in the Jefferson and Dorset areas all of her life. She was married to Arthur A. Lehto on November 12, 1937 in West Virginia. Mrs. Lehto worked for many years at the General Electric Plant in Jefferson.
She was a member of the Dorset Baptist Church where she was involved with the Ladies Circle, Vacation Bible School and sending cards to church family and friends. She loved flower gardening and giving bouquets to family and friends, she was a dedicated Cleveland Cavaliers fan and enjoyed playing Rummikub. Her greatest enjoyment was watching all of her grandchildren grow up.
Survivors include two daughters, M. Anne (Stanley) Huber of Williamsfield Twp. & Linda L. (Robert) Spellman of Dorset Twp., nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a special niece, Joyce Kaszar of Dorset Twp. and many more nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arthur on March 21, 1978, a great-granddaughter, Sheena Nicole Brown in 1990, five sisters, Lovica Jordan, Alice Ferree, Gola Shoppart, Margaret Hunter & Clarabelle Narhi and five brothers, Earl, Charles, Robert, Pete & John Steen.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P. M., Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Edward Pickard, minister at the Dorset Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Dorset Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 12-1 P. M. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorset Baptist Church, P. O. Box 81, Dorset, Ohio 44032 or to Regional Home Health Services, 3949 Jefferson Rd., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Clara M. Hudson Olin
Tuesday, December 14th, 2004
Clara M. Hudson Olin, 86, Marcy Rd., Pierpont Twp., died early Monday morning at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
Mrs. Olin had resided at the Austinburg Nursing & Rehabilitation Center the past two months and lived the previous year at the Villa-on-the-Lake in Conneaut.
She was born October 11, 1918 in Pierpont Twp., the daughter of Paul & Kate (Chidister) Thompson and has resided in Pierpont Twp. all of her life. Mrs. Olin spent more than 20 years as Activity Director at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, retiring in 1981.
Mrs. Olin was a member of the Pierpont Presbyterian Church where she served as deaconess for several years and held various other offices in the church, she was also a member of Orion Lodge #12, O. E. S. She served on the board for the government nutritional site at the Pierpont Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, needlework and traveling.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-laws, Paul W. & Christine Hudson of Pierpont Twp. and Duane H. & Roxanne Hudson of Saybrook Twp., seven grandchildren, Scott Banning of Parma, Catherine Olsen of Dallas, Tex., Timothy Hudson of Pierpont Twp., Kelly Scoville of Geneva, Matthew Hudson of Kingsville Twp., Jacquelin Hudson of Columbus & Katie Hudson of Saybrook Twp. and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Howard E. Hudson in 1966, her second husband, Arnold Olin in 1978, two daughters, Jean A. Banning in 2002, Vera M. Andrews in 2003 and a sister, Hazel Dewey in 2003
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 18 at 12:00 P. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Edward Diehl of the Pierpont Presbyterian Church officiating. Cremation will follow the services at the Family Care Group Cremation Center.
Burial of ashes will be a later date in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 A. M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Pierpont Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 123, Pierpont, Ohio 44082, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Vaino E. Tuomala
Tuesday, December 7th, 2004
Vaino E. Tuomala, 89, E. Ashtabula St., Jefferson, died Monday morning at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center where he had been a patient the past four weeks.
He was born September 28, 1915 in Ashtabula Harbor, the son of Matt & Ida (Koski) Tuomala and has resided in this area all of his life. He was married to the former Lucille E. Deel on Novmeber 6, 1943 at the Jefferson Methodist Church Parsonage.
Mr. Tuomala was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in World War II.
He was employed with Ashtabula Fork & Hoe, then the True Temper Corp. for 34 years, retiring in 1980.
Mr. Tuomala was a bee keeper more than 50 years, was an avid reader, reading newspapers cover to cover everyday and enjoyed shopping.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille and a son, Donald Tuomala of Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dale Tuomala in 1996, a brother, Charles Tuomala, a half-brother, George Tuomala and a half-sister, Lila Gill.
At Mr. Tuomala’s request, cremation took place at the Family Care Group Cremation Center and the graveside services for the burial of cremains will be at 1:00 P. M. Friday at the Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson.
No visitation will be observed.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Mrs. Lucille Tuomala, 91 E. Ashtabula St., Jefferson, Ohio 44047.
The Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.
