Floyd L. Bear
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005
Floyd L. Bear, 78, St Rt. 307, Dorset Twp., died Tuesday afternoon in the intensive care unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center following a short illness.
He was born January 29, 1927 in Delrio, TN, the son of Lemuel G. & May (Hudson) Bear and had been a resident of the Jefferson area since 1978, coming from Cleveland. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in World War II. Mr. Bear was an 18-year employee of Erico Products Co. in Solon, retiring in 1988.
He was married to the late Dorothy M. Meece on August 8, 1965 in Cleveland. He enjoyed farming, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include a step-son, C. Douglas Hansford of Andover & a step-daughter, Priscilla S. Bina of Cleveland, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, & a sister, Christine Horner of Morristown, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy in 2004, a brother, Jack Bear and five sisters, Mildred Pack, Mary Ruth Strum, Catherine Southland, Alice Frank Southland & Doris Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A. M. Friday at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Dale Epple of the Dorset United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Dorset Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 6-8 P. M. at the funeral home.

Juanita M. "Granny" Grose
Saturday, March 19th, 2005
Juanita M. “Granny” Grose, 79, Stumpville Rd., Jefferson Twp., died unexpectedly Friday afternoon at her residence.
She was born June 11, 1925 in Jodie, WV, the daughter of Edward T. & Ida M. (Morris) Gray and has been a resident of the Jefferson area since 1955, coming from Jodie, WV. She was married to Lloyd E. Grose on June 1, 1946 in Summersville, WV.
Mrs. Grose enjoyed sitting on her porch, watching the birds and country music.
Survivors include five children, Mary F. Dietrich of Montrose, CO, G. Edward Grose of Broomfield, CO, Elmer R. Grose of Montrose, CO, Veronica A. Vencill of Dorset Twp., & Diana K. Grose of Los Angles, CA, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and longtime friend and companion, Corliss “Corky” Brigham of Eagleville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd in 1981, a daughter, Carol S. Gorse in 1967, three brothers, Mansfield, Hollis & Selvin Gray and three sisters, Ruby Cole, Reva Taylor & Josephine Cole.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Kenneth Roberts of the Pentecostal Church of God and the Rev. Edward Pickard of the Dorset Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Eagleville Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday from 7-9 P. M. at the funeral home. Contributions may be directed to the family, in care of Veronica Vencill, 3000 Tower Rd., Dorset, OH 44032, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Nola Jean Larson
Monday, March 14th, 2005
Nola Jean Larson, 63, St. Rt. 307 East, Jefferson, died early Monday morning in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center following a short illness.
She was born June 10, 1941 in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of Neal J. & Nettie E. (Smith) Falkenburg and has been a resident of Jefferson and Dorset Twp. all of her life. Mrs. Larson was a Customer Service Representative for Key Bank for 20 years, retiring in 2002. She was also the bookkeeper for Larson Trucking Co. and Jarod Larson Motor Sports.
She was a very involved member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church where she served many years on the Administrative Board, worked the polls for the Ashtabula Co. Board of Elections, was involved with TOPS and served as an advisor for the All Thumbs 4-H Club for several years. Mrs. Larson was an avid walker and collected Longeberger Baskets.
Survivors include her husband, Norman D. Larson, whom she married on June 29, 1957 in West Springfield, PA, her mother, Nettie E. Falkenburg of Jefferson, two children, Jodi L. (Paul) Bishop of Jefferson and Jarod D. Larson of Austinburg Twp., two grandchildren, Nicholas Paul & Arden Claire Bishop, a brother, Neal J. Falkenburg, Jr. of Jefferson, a sister, Naomi J. Tokar of Dublin, OH and two nieces, Hannah J. Falkenburg & Sarah N. James.
She was preceded in death by her father, Neal J. Falkenburg and a son in infancy, Lawrence Russell Larson.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, OH 44047, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the church officiating. Cremation will follow the services at the Family Care Group Cremation Center. Private burial of ashes will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 P. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Contributions may be directed to the Jefferson United Methodist Church Memorial Fund at the above address or to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004, envelopes will also be at the funeral home and church.

Miriam E. Phelps
Wednesday, May 11th, 2005
Miriam E. Phelps, 87, formerly of Lenox-New Lyme Rd., Lenox Twp., entered through the gates of Heaven on Monday morning at the Jefferson Medical Associates where she had been a resident the past 15 years.
She was born April 17, 1918 in Rock Creek, the daughter of Floyd & Harriett (Kenzie) Ashley and has been a resident of Ashtabula Co. all of her life. Mrs. Phelps attended Rock Creek School and was married to James H. Phelps on September 14, 1941 in Rock Creek.
During World War II, she was employed at the Ravenna Arsenal. She later worked as a cook at the Charlotte Nursing Home in Rock Creek. She was active with in the Rock Creek Travelers Club, Morgan Hose Co Spitfires & Rock Creek United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed being with her family, shopping, cooking and baking.
Those she left behind until they can join her in the light of God is a daughter, Jane R. (Bill) Wickert of Goodlettsville, TN, two granddaughters, Brenda M. (Tim) Scribben of Colebrook Twp. & Dianne E. Stowe of Goodlettsville, TN, three great-granddaughters, Rebecca M., Megan E. & Rachel L. Scribben, all in Colebrook Twp. & a brother, Robert Ashley of Steward, AK.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James in 1982, an infant daughter, Janet in 1954, brothers, Clarence, Salomon & Kenny and sisters, Lillie & Cleo.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 A. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Gordon Emerson, lay pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 7-9 P. M. & Friday from 10-11 A. M. at the funeral home. Contributions may be directed to the family in care of Jane R. Wickert, P. O. Box 186, Goodlettsville, TN 37070, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

Sherry Hines Crouser
Thursday, May 5th, 2005
Sherry Hines Crouser, 38, Austinburg Twp., died late Wednesday afternoon at the University Hospital in Cleveland following three years of dealing with cancer.
She was born October 26, 1966 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Lowell & Lillian (Ramey) Hines and resided in the area most of her life before moving to the Cortland area 14 years ago. She was a 1985 graduate of Grand Valley High School. She was married to Don Crouser in October of 1989 and later divorced. Ms. Crouser worked for several years at the Orwell Golden Dawn and at the Cortland Nursing Home.
She enjoyed crafts, gardening and spending time with her sons.
Survivors include three sons, Scott, Todd & Eric Crouser, all living with their father in Fredonia, PA, her father and step-mother, Lowell & Mary Jane Hines of Jefferson, a brother, Lowell Hines of Orwell, a step-brother, James Nemitz of Jefferson, two step-sisters, Valerie (Todd) Sumner of Ashtabula & Alisha Priddy of Bristol and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillian Ramey Hines in 1986 and her grandparents, Harland & Evelyn Hines and George & Lucille Ramey.
Following Ms. Crouser’s wishes, cremation will take place at the Family Care Group Cremation Center with a memorial service to follow on Saturday at 1:00 P. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph’s Cancer Care Center, 667 Eastland Ave., Warren, OH 44484, envelopes will also be at the funeral home.

David E. Carlson
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005
David E. Carlson, 73, Linda Ln., Jefferson, died Monday in the intensive care unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
He was born on January 11, 1932 in Jefferson, the son of Edward & Evelyn (Congdon) Carlson and has been a resident of the Jefferson area most of his life. Mr. Carlson graduated from Jefferson High School in 1949 and attended Otterbein College. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1957 as a navigator advancing to the rank of First Lieutenant. He later graduated from Kent State University in 1964 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education degree and from Westminster College in 1969 with a Master of Education degree. He served the students of Jefferson Area Local Schools as a teacher and assistant principal of Jefferson Elementary School for 32 years. Other duties included Director of Audio/Visual, school bus driver and sixth grade trip coordinator. He received the Conservation Teacher of the Year award and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education honorary.
Mr. Carlson enjoyed repairing furniture for Hamilton’s Furniture Store and completing other projects in his woodworking shop in Jefferson. He was very active in the Jefferson community. He helped organize village parades and established and maintained flags displayed on village streets. In addition, he built wooden figures used as Christmas decorations throughout the village for the Chamber of Commerce.
He was active in many Jefferson Area School’s activities, including earning Mr. Top Hat at the Falcon Follies in 1983 and working tirelessly for the Jefferson Area Music Boosters uniform drive in 1984-85. He was an active member of the Jefferson Rotary Club and was selected as a Paul Harris Fellow. He helped organize numerous projects such at the Rotary Horse Show and Rotary events at Jefferson Days. He was honored with the Community Service Award sponsored by the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce in 1992.
He was a dedicated and energetic member of Masonic bodies. He was Past Commander of Conneaut Cache Commandery #27 and was currently serving as Worshipful Master of Relief Lodge #284, F. & A. M. in Pierpont and Illustrious Master of Conneaut Council #40. He also was a member of Jefferson Chapter #141, R. A. M., A. M. D. #149 and Scottish Rite, Valley of Spokane, WA. He received his 50-year membership pin in 2003.
He attended the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Jefferson and was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at Otterbein College and enjoyed their annual reunions.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara J. (Holmes) Carlson, whom he married July 17, 1954 at the Jefferson Congregational Church, a son, Timothy A. (Beth) Carlson & three granddaughters, Katherine, Erica & Emily, all of Orwell and three brothers, Robert (Barbara) Carlson of Charlottesville, VA, Kenneth (Linda) Carlson of Ashtabula & Larry (Jean) Carlson of Jefferson and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 A. M. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 41 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, OH 44047, with the Rev. Bruce Larson officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery where Geneva Post #6846 will provide military services.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 P. M. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Relief Lodge #284 F. & A. M. will conduct Masonic services Thursday at 8:00 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at the First Congregational United Church of Christ at the above address, envelopes will also be at the funeral home and church.
