Frances A. Mericka
Monday, May 8th, 2006
Frances A. Mericka, 96, formerly of Dorset Rd., Jefferson, died Sunday morning at the Jefferson Health Center where she had been a resident the past 13 years.
She was born June 23, 1909 in Cleveland, the daughter of Edward & Frances (Mudra) Hynst and has been a resident of Ashtabula Co. since 1946, coming from Cleveland. She was married to Stanley J. Mericka on February 16, 1928 in Cleveland.
Mrs. Mericka attended St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, was a member of the Czechoslovakian Society of America and enjoyed crocheting, handwork, baking and ceramics.
Survivors include three children, Stanley E. (Pat) Mericka, LaVerne F. (Maynard) Mitcham & Roger W. (Barbara) Mericka, all of Jefferson, seven grandchilden, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Helen Homolka of Cleveland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stanley in 1985, two grandsons, Jeffrey A. Mericka & Michael S. Mericka, three brothers, Joseph, Richard & Edward Hynst and a sister, Anna Mastny.
The funeral mass will be Wednesday at 11:00 A. M. at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church 32 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Wassie officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:45 – 10:45 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 12200 Fairhill Rd., Cleveland, OH 44120.

Kenneth A. Shumate
Monday, May 8th, 2006
Kenneth A. Shumate, 73, N. Sycamore St., Jefferson, died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at his residence.
He was born October 7, 1932 in N. Wilksboro, NC, the son of Barney & Jettie (Taylor) Shumate and has been a resident of the Jefferson the past 49 years, coming from N. Wilksboro, NC. Mr. Shumate was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a 30-year employee of Kitcheneering, Inc. in Cleveland, retiring in 1998.
Mr. Shumate was a member of Tuscan Lodge #342, F. & A. M., American Legion Post #152 in Jefferson and Jefferson Eagles Aerie Lodge #3881. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include four children, Kathleen M. Ketron of Jefferson, Margaret E. Kovach of Northfield, Roger C. Shumate of Hillsborouh, NC & Linda C. Bealer of Jefferson, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four siblings, Wayne, R. C. & Roger Shumate and Sandra Osborne, all of North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret in 1998 and five brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3:00 P. M. at the Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. No calling hours will be observed.
The Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the American Legion Post #152, 341 S. Elm St., Jefferson, OH 44047. A social gathering for family and friends will be held at the Jefferson Eagles #3881 on S. Spruce St. immediately following the graveside services. Kenneth R. Corlew
Monday, May 8th, 2006
Kenneth R. Corlew, 82, N. Monroe Circle, Jefferson, died Sunday morning at his residence following a short illness.
He was born April 16, 1924 in Ashtabula, the son of George & Jenny (Anderson) Corlew and has lived in this area all of his life. Mr. Corlew was a veteran of the U. S. Navy Merchant Marines, serving during World War II.
He was married to Betty M. Lytle on August 4, 1947 in Jefferson. He was a retired brick layer, working out of the local Ashtabula Union. He enjoyed gardening and was active with Compassionate Friends.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, four children, Kenneth G. Corlew of Jefferson, Kathy R. Rex of Ashtabula, Danny L. Corlew of Denton, TX & Jeffrey M. Corlew of Alfred, FL, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a brother, Donald Corlew of Kingsville Twp. & a sister, Marvel Corlew of Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, John C. Corlew in 1988 and a sister, Frances Turnquist.
A visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. No additional services will be held.
Private burial will take place in Edgewood Cemetery at the families convenience. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

James W. Townsend
Saturday, May 6th, 2006
James W. Townsend, 69 of West 36th St. Ashtabula died Saturday (May 6th) at his home after a long illness. He was born August 29, 1936 in Seth, West Virginia the son of Herbert and Gladys (Walker) Townsend.
He was a veteran of the United States Marines serving during the Korean Conflict.
He was employed for over twenty five years with Dalin Molded Machine in Ashtabula as a Tool & Die Maker retiring in 2001.
He was a Past Commander and life member of the Army-Navy Union of Ashtabula and a lifetime member of the Ashtabula Eagles.
Surviving him are his children, Ronald Milam of Ashtabula, Connie (Jim) Law of New Mexico, Ellen (Jerry) Karkutt of Ashtabula and Bonnie (Todd) Bryant of Ashtabula; his fiancé, Ada Black of Ashtabula; twelve grandchildren, Misty and April Turley, Ronnie and Tyler Milam, Jim and Jeremy Law, Marc and Nicholas Arvanites, Traci and Sam Karkutt and Seth and Jacob Bryant and a brother Rudy Townsend of Grafton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Iris “Dollie” Townsend in 2003; two daughters, Theresa Turley and Deborah Arvanites; two brothers, Charles and Daniel Townsend and three sisters, Winifred Atkins, Tankie Townsend and Betty Atkins.
A celebration of life will be Tuesday (May 9th) from 7 to 9 PM at the Army – Navy Union, 1242 West 40th St. Ashtabula.
The Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy I. Partridge

Dorothy I. Partridge, 79 of North Ridge Rd. East Ashtabula died Friday (April 28th) at Select Specialty Hospital in Erie, Pa. She was born August 25, 1926 in Fowler, Ohio the daughter of Clarence E. and Leila L. (Rising) Braunns.
She was employed with Brown Memorial Hospital; Spencer School in Geneva; Namco Controls in Jefferson and she retired from Andover Industries.
She is a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church; the Jefferson Grange; the TOPPS Club of Kingsville; the Shawnee Squares of Geneva ; she was a founder and charter member of the Bulah Bible Study and a past member of the Rebecahs.
She enjoyed crocheting, collecting Angels, birds and salt and pepper shakers and spending time with her family.
Surviving her is a son, Thomas (Shirley) Partridge of Ashtabula; two daughters, Dianne (George) Hopson, Jr. of Ashtabula and Louise Newness of Kingwood, Texas; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and a sister, Frances Carpenter of Niles, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George in 1993; a brother, Floyd Braunns; and three sisters, Mildred Wagner, Katherine Wazelle and Ruth Braunns.
Funeral services will be Tuesday (May 2nd) at 11:00 AM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, Inc. 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Vernon Palo of the Plymouth United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Kinsman Cemetery
Calling hours will be Monday (May 1st ) from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes. Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ida R. Burtt
Saturday, April 29th, 2006
Ida R. Burtt, 67, Stanhope-Kelloggsville Rd., Williamsfield Twp., died Wednesday evening at her residence surrounded by her family following a long struggle with diabetes..
She was born May 31, 1938, the daughter of the late, William S. & Neva L. (Stemple) Bland, Jr. in Flemington, WV. Ida lived there until she married her husband, Fred M. Burtt on June 21, 1958. They then moved to Ashtabula Co., making Williamsfield there home the past 45 years. Mrs. Burtt worked more than 27 years in the cafeteria at the Pymatuning Valley Middle School, retiring in 2001.
She was a member of the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene and was an old time member of the Williamsfield Mother’s Club. Ida lived for her grandchildren! You would find her at every sporting event or any activity they were involved in. Everyone knew who “MAM-MA”!!!!
She is survived by her husband, Fred M. Burtt, two daughters, Cindy L. (James) Morford of Williamsfield Twp., Christy M. (Chet, Jr.) Paul of Andover, three grandchildren, Chad & Cody Paul and Hilary Morford, a great-granddaughter, Brooke Mercer and two siblings, Kay Gibson of Flemington, WV & Sanford Bland of Ashtabula.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Kevin Angel of the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in West Williamsfield Cemetery. There will be no graveside service. Fred & Ida are honored their memorial headstone was designed by their grandson, Chad.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5-8 P. M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Ida has requested memorial contributions be made to the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene Handicap Elevator Fund, 55 E. Satin St., Jefferson, OH 44047 or to the Pymatuning Area Ambulance Service, 153 Station St., Andover, OH 44003. Guest register book and obituary on-line at fleming-billman.com.
