Patricia Anne (Alexander) Bertone
Sunday, April 16th, 2006
Patricia Anne (Alexander) Bertone, known to her friends and family as Pat, ended her battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple System Atrophy in a very symbolic way on Friday, April 14, 2006-Good Friday-the same day our lord and Savior suffered and died so that we may have Eternal Life…the life that Pat now enjoys with Him. She died in her sleep at the home of her only child, Eva Marie McGann, in Ashburn, VA, whom she was visiting for Easter. She died very happy, having spent a wonderful evening with her family the night before her death and laughing as her daughter was acting silly right before putting her to bed.
She was born January 3, 1943 in Geneva, the daughter of goodly parents, Leslie Jack and Estella Pearl (Shreve) Alexander, both of whom are welcoming their daughter in to eternal life right now.
She graduated from Platt R. Spencer School in 1961 as class valedictorian, a fact of which she was very proud. On July 13, 1968 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson, she married Joseph Frank Bertone, former Magistrate of Ashtabula Co. Juvenile Court. They have resided at 166 Maplewood Dr. in Jefferson the past 29 years, a location she loved because she had great neighbors.
She worked at a variety of different jobs throughout her lifetime. She was the secretary for the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene, where she was a member most of her life and a medical receptionist for Dr. John Popovic. The job she loved most was at Farmer’s Home Administration in Jefferson where she worked until it closed in the mid 1990’s.
She loved to read scripture and have time for daily prayer. She also enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. She was a very good seamstress, sewing many different outfits over the course of her life. She was also a lover of cats and was currently owned by Frisky, a bob-tailed tabby and Whitey, a white and gray house cat.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Frank Bertone, a daughter, Eva Marie and son-in-law, William Todd McGann, who affectionately called her Granny. She was lovingly known as Grandma Pat by her three grandchildren, Sammi, Bobby and Marcus, which one of her greatest joys in life was spending time with them. She also leaves behind a brother, Leland Jack (Eileen) Alexander of Geneva, a sister, Ina Marie Ree (John) Hartin of Lafayette IN and a niece and several nephews. She also leaves a dear friend, Patty Newman, who helped to care for her as her disease progressed and limited her ability to be independent during the last few months of her life. She would want those who read this to know that she had a testimony that Jesus was the Christ and she was sure of her eternal salvation with Him. Let this testament stand as a record of her life in the name of her beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.
To celebrate her life, calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2006 from 5-8 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming and Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene, 55 E. Satin St., Jefferson, OH 44047.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Church of the Nazarene (above address) with the Rev. Shirley Deemer, associate pastor of the church leading the service of celebration. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Geneva.

Helen F. Smolen
Friday, April 14th, 2006
Helen F. Smolen departed this life peacefully on April 13, 2006 at the Jefferson Health Center, Jefferson, Ohio, with members of her loving family by her side. She was born August 29, 1916 in Uniontown, Pa., the daughter of Phillip & Anna Washut.
She was the wife of John W. Smolen, Sr., and the mother of three sons, John Jr. (Marie) of Jefferson, Richard (Susan) of Baden, Pa., and Gerald (Dianne) of Holland, Oh. She also leaves seven grandchildren; Andrew of Jefferson, Julie (Mark) Forgach of Toledo, Kristen (David) Carrel of Mentor, Jeffery (Kristin) of Gross Point, Mi., Steven of Pittsburg, Katheryn (Greg) Snyder, of Toledo, and Elizabeth (Jack) Hunter of Toledo, and seven wonderful great-grandchildren, a brother, Mike (Shirley) Washut and a sister Rosanne Werenko of Jefferson.
She moved to the Jefferson area as a child with her parents who had acquired the dairy farm on Rt. 46 North, where she and her husband eventually purchased the farm from her father and operated it lifelong. Helen had a heart of gold to help those who were less fortunate. She will always be remembered for her unselfishness and generosity to her family, friends and community. She was generous to her sons, whom she insisted that they better themselves by getting the education that she couldn’t get as a young person. All of her three sons graduated from Ohio State University, and moved on to productive lives as an engineer, veterinarian, and a university professor.
She was a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Catholic Church of Jefferson. Her kitchen was the focal point for her many friends that dropped by for a visit. She always insisted that they “eat something” before they leave, this could include something ranging from a piece of one of her delicious homemade pastries to a full meal with the family. Her activity in the community centered on her lifelong membership in the Griggs Grange. She could be counted on to take one of her specialty desserts to the grange meetings. In her earlier years she worked tirelessly on the Ashtabula County Fair Grange Exhibitors’ Booth. Frequently her pastry or grain exhibits won a prize at the fair’s homemaker exhibits. Her passion however, was her garden and the farm animals. Throughout the year she shared her frozen garden vegetables with her family, giving grandchildren a chance to experience the taste of these true farm fresh delights. Her sweet corn was legendary among the kids. Working the dairy farm hand-in-hand with her husband, she understood the business of farming, both its rewards and the risks. Her favorite task was selecting a name for each of the dairy cows that best reflected their character. In many respects she was ahead of her time in gardening and animal husbandry. She proved herself somewhat of an organic gardener and dairy farmer. As newly developed chemicals became readily available for use in plant insect control and in animal health care, their routine use was objectionable to her. Her attitude was, “I don’t want those chemicals in our food supply, they can’t be good for you!” Helen also understood the positive role of vitamins in achieving a healthy diet.
She had been suffering from declining health for a number of years, but courageously continued living independently with her husband, John, until about six months ago when she suffered a mild stroke. At that time, he couldn’t care for her adequately and then she moved into the nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John & Henry Washut, and a sister, Nellie Kelner.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 17, at 11:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Father Stephen Wassie officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
At Mrs. Smolen’s request no calling hours will be observed. Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 or to the Griggs Grange, 1855 St. Rt. 46 N., Jefferson, Ohio 44047. Envelopes will be available at the church. The Jefferson home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, Inc. 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson is handling all arrangements.
