Velma M. Andrus King
Friday, July 21st, 2006
Velma M. Andrus King, 86 of Plaza Ave. Warren, Ohio and former Jefferson resident died Thursday (July 20th) at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. She was born May 5, 1920 in Lenox, Ohio the daughter of Nelson and Vida (Frase) Roberts.
She had been employed as a credit and operating manager for Warren Credit and Adjustment Bureau; she also worked for B.F. Goodrich in Warren and Youngstown and also for Browning and Ferris Company.
She excelled at crocheting, quilting and sewing. She made quilts and afghans for her grandchildren, the Baptist Church and the Historical Society. She enjoyed baking especially pies, gardening, trees, playing cards and bingo. She was involved with the Historical Society and genealogy.
Surviving her is a son Gail (Karen) Andrus of Niles, Ohio; a daughter, Jule (John Alan) Fowler of Warren, Ohio; four grandchildren, Pam Dickens, John E. Fowler, Nicole Andrus and Matthew Andrus and a brother, Eldon Roberts of Zepher Hills, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Burt Andrus in 1972, her second husband, Willard H. King in 1997 and a sister Clarice Jeannette Scofield.
Funeral services will be Monday (July 24th) at 1:00 PM at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 West Jefferson St. Jefferson with Rev. William Offutt of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Vienna, Ohio.
Calling hours will be Sunday (July 23rd) from 3 to 5 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lenox Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Guest and obituary at fleming-billman.com

Edith M. Westover
Friday, July 21st, 2006
Edith M. Westover, 98, of Lake Ave. Ashtabula died Friday July 21st. She was born October 28, 1907 in Sheffield Twp. Ohio the Daughter of David M. and Grace May (Johnson) Hammond. She was an area resident most of her life.
She attended Ashtabula High School. She married Douglas M. Westover on January 15, 1927. Mrs. Westover worked at the Hotel Ashtabula as a desk clerk retiring after 11 years in 1973. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was an active member of the P.T.A. at Station Elementary School in the 1950’s She also enjoyed craft work and taking bus tours, She was also a member of the 55 Plus Club.
She is survived by three children David (Doris) Westover of Ashtabula, Barbara (Bernard) Harwell of Ashtabula and Marilyn (Richard) Nelson of Ashtabula. Six grandsons, Byron Harwell and Gary Nelson of Ashtabula, Bret and Ben Harwell of Idaho, Bruce Nelson of Lodi and David Westover of Kentucky. Two grand daughters Laurie Davis of Maple Heights and Linda Laird of Ashtabula; three great grandsons Gary Nelson and Joshua and Justin Westover; four great granddaughters Tiffanie Nelson, Katherine Davis, Tessa and Kelsey Harwell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Lillian, and her husband Douglas Westover January 3, 1962.
Funeral services will be Tuesday (July 25th) at 11:00 AM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. with Sanford Downs of The First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday (July 24th) from 6 to 8PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church.

Betty M. Curtis
Tuesday, June 26th, 2007
Betty M. Curtis, 81 of South Myers St. in Geneva died Thursday (June 14th) at her home. She was born May 2, 1925 in Jefferson, Ohio the daughter of Francis A. and Bertha (Rose) Prosser and has been a lifetime area resident.
She had worked for Molded Fiber Glass in Ashtabula and had worked at Saybrook Elementary School.
She is a member of Saybrook United Methodist Church. She enjoyed going to Las Vegas, Dominoes and Roller Skating.
Surviving her is her husband, Clayton Curtis, Sr. whom she married June 15, 1940; four children, Gordon Duane (Esther) Curtis of Jefferson, Jodee Wittman of Colorado, Autumn (Dave) Irons of Austinburg and Candy Curtis of Las Vegas, a daughter-in-law Jackie Curtis of Saybrook; nine grandchildren, Clayton III, Davette, Heather, Chris, Lisa, Travis, Keith, Bruce and Daniel; and six great grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Richard Prosser of Geneva, Lila Muto of Painesville, Mildred BaumGardner of Ashtabula, and Joyce Lee of Ashtabula two half sisters, Judy Moss of Geneva-on-the-Lake and Connie Jenkins of Geneva and a half brother, Jimmy Wilson of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Clayton “Clay” Curtis, Jr. in March and a daughter, Kathy Griffin.
A memorial service will be Saturday (June 30th) at 11:00 AM at the Saybrook United Methodist, 7900 S. Depot Rd. Saybrook Township with Rev. James Macdonald officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Cranesville, Pa.
Memorial contributions can be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the church and at the Geneva Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 323 South Broadway, Geneva, Ohio.

Mildred R. Sylak
Monday, June 25th, 2007
Mildred R. Sylak, 87 of Roaming Shores, died Wednesday June 20th at the Hospice House of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, where she had been a patient for the past 11 days.
She was born on December 9, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Benjamin & Myrtle (Pabst) Harry and has lived in this area since 1972 coming here from Youngstown, Ohio. She married Stanley F. Sylak on January 12, 1939 in Youngstown, where she was a employee for the Youngstown Credit Bureau for 30 years before retiring.
Mildred was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Jefferson, and enjoyed sewing, reading, movies and traveling and especially loved being with her family.
She is survived by three children, Jean M. Sylak of Cleveland Hts., Judie D. (Robert Boggs) Sylak of Roaming Shores and Robert S. (Maureen) Sylak of Munson Twp., five grandchildren, Larissa Faulkner, Kelly Boggs, Kristin Boggs, Benjamin Sylak and Jonathan Sylak, seven great-grandchildren, Ali, Alexander, Andrew, Serena, Cooper, Sydney and Aiden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley in 1988, brothers, Charles Harry & Warren Harry in childhood.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30th at 1:00 P.M. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Jefferson, 41 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson with the Rev. William Spangler officiating. Burial of ashes will be held at Morgan Union Cemetery in Rock Creek.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Jefferson home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Homes, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanley & Mildred Sylak Memorial Endowment at the First Congregational United Church of Christ or to the charity of your choice. Jeannette R. Frend
Monday, June 25th, 2007
Jeannette R. Frend, born April 8, 1919 passed away Sunday (June 24th) at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home where she was a resident for the past few months. For over 50 years she had been a resident of Thayer Ave. in Ashtabula and recent years lived with her daughter in Kingsvillle, Ohio and resided for two years at the Villa on The Lake in Conneaut.
Mrs. Frend was a very active in many area golf leagues, including the City Rec. Women’s Golf League and the City Rec. Volleyball League. She also taught fencing at the YMCA in 1950 and during her fencing career was named Outstanding Women Fencer of Northeastern Ohio. She was a homemaker and beautiful seamstress along with caring for her home, beloved family and parents. She attended Zion Lutheran Church in Ashtabula.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles A. Frend in 1985 whom she married to for 47 years and her partner, Clyde Bancroft preceded in 2000.; her sons, C. Robert Frend in 1996, Terry L. Frend in 1973, a brother, Bill Mateja, a sister, Liberty Bell Farona, son-in-law, Ken B. Sylvester and grandchildren, Shelley, Robin and Raymond Sylvester in their infancy.
Surviving her are her daughters, Lorrie Sylvester (Joe) Crews of Amarillo, Texas and Vicki Sylvester of Kingsville, Ohio. Surviving grandchildren are Scott (Darcy) Sylvester of Louisville, KY, Kenneth Sylvester (great-grandchildren Luke and Emily) of Kingsville, Steve (Virginia) Sylvester (great-grandchild Elyssa) of Ashtabula, Dawn (Mike) Lilja (great grandchildren Morgan, Mason, Matt) of Ashtabula and Monica (Kerry) Blackwell (great grandchildren, Stormie and Dusty) of Amarillo, Texas. Also surviving is a sister and many nieces and nephews.
Friends of the family are welcome to help celebrate her life at the home of her daughter, Vicki Sylvester at 4246 Route # 84 in Kingsville and June 26th and 27th.
Her beloved family will lay her to rest, with her husband and sons in Saybrook Cemetery. The Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula is in charge of arrangements.

Edward L. Batanian
Wednesday, June 20th, 2007
Edward L. Batanian, 80, Silvieus St., Ashtabula, died Tuesday afternoon in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.(p) He was born April 14, 1927 in Cambridge, the son of Leon & Helen (Potts) Batanian and has lived in Ashtabula most of his life, coming from Sharon, PA. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in World War II. Mr. Batanian was married to Rosalie M. Palazzo on June 19, 1954 at St. Barthelemew Church in Sharpsville, PA.(p) Mr. Batanian was a teacher and Athletic Director in the Buckeye School System for 31 years, retiring in 1984. He served as secretary to the Northeastern Conference for 25 years and was currently secretary for the Northeast District Athletic Board, he also served as a board member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association for several years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, BPOE #256 and was an avid fisherman, enjoyed traveling, was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. (p) Survivors include seven children, Stephen L. Batanian of Ashtabula, Rosanne M. (Robert) Adams of Centreville, VA, Susan M. Gillespie & James G. (Sharon) Batanian, both of Ashtabula, Christopher L. (Cherie) Batanian of Portsmouth, Timothy L. (Chris) Batanian and Michael L. Batanian, both of Ashtabula, 13 grandchildren, two brothers, Floyd (Mary Lou) Batanian of Toledo & Harlan (Mary) Batanian of Sharon, PA & four sisters, Jean (George) Alward & Kitty Burns, both of Sharon, PA, Patty Potts of Columbus, Anna Marie Wirick of Griffin, IN & Joan Kaszowski of Raliegh, NC.(p) He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Rosalie in November 2006, a son, Mark Edward Batanian in 1976, a grandson, Mark Edward Gillespie in 2006, two sisters, Doris Magnatto & Sara Seinar & two brothers, George “Jack” Batanian and Jimmy at birth.(p) The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A. M. Friday at St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Fr. Philip Miller officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.(p) Calling hours will be Thurday (today) from 2-4 & 6-8 P. M. at the Ashtabula Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula. Memorial contributions may be made to the Edward L. Batanian & Family Library Fund, c/o Susan Gillespie, 1031 Westshore Dr., Ashtabula, OH 44004, envelopes will also be at the funeral home. (p)

Anna G. Styles
Monday, June 18th, 2007
Anna G. Styles, 99, former resident of Chestnut Hill Dr., Saybrook Twp., died Friday afternoon at the Brighton Gardens assisted living facility in Centerville.
She was born May 10, 1908 in Austinburg, the daughter of Cornelius & Mary (Calaway) Norris and has been a lifetime resident of this area. She was married to Emanuel S. Styles on June 29, 1932 in Austinburg. Mrs. Styles was a teacher in the Ashtabula Co. School Systems for over 18 years and was a case worker for the Ashtabula Co. Aid for the Aged for 10 years, retiring in 1971.
Mrs. Styles was a member of the Austinburg First United Church of Christ where she was involved with the Mary Martha Circle, she was a member of the Ashtabula Co. Retired Teachers Assoc., she was a past Grand Marshall for Austinburg Country Days, she was active with the 55 Plus club at the YMCA, she has traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states and traveling abroad many times with family and friends.
Survivors include a son, William A. (Cheryl) Styles of Kettering, two grandsons, Lance (Pamela) Styles & Erik R. Styles, both of Dayton and a great-granddaughter, Calista Styles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers, Walter & Eugene “Gene” Norris and sisters, Dorothy Henderson & Elizabeth Hoben.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with the Rev. Allison Milligan of the Austinburg First United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Austinburg Twp.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6-8 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Church of Christ, P. O. Box 253, Austinburg, OH 44010 or to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
