Tuesday, June 5th, 2007
Joan T. Joy, 80, Staley Rd., Orwell, died late Saturday evening at the Serenity Manor Nursing Home in Orwell.
She was born November 22, 1926 in Roundup, MT, the daughter of William & Anna (Matts) Schlappert and has resided in the Orwell area since 2000, coming from Montana.
Mrs. Joy was of the Catholic faith.
She acted very sly and loved to flirt, she enjoyed crafts, writing, artwork and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane J. (John) Toke of Cherry Valley Twp. & Linda A. Steal of Massachusetts, six grandchildren, Heather Steal, Maria Lucas, Rhonda Toke, Becky Murphy, John Toke & Joe Toke, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and three sisters, Dorothy, Donna & June.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Stanley Olhava in 1991, her second husband, Arliss Joy in 2000 and two sisters, Alma & Virginia.
At the family’s request, Mrs. Joy will have a private burial in Montana.
No calling hours or services will be held locally.
The Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.

Gloria J. Kozak
Sunday, June 3rd, 2007
Gloria J. Kozak, 78 of Dickinson Rd. Ashtabula passed away Saturday (June 2nd) at her home.
She was a born August 20, 1928 in Ashtabula the daughter of George and Helen (Arkkelin) Heiskanen.
As a young child she was raised by her grandparents, Hiskas and Hilda Heiskanen, later she was cared for by her Aunt and Uncle, Laina (Arkkelin) and Jalmer Sandfield.
She was very proud to be a 1946 graduate of Ashtabula High School.
She also attended the University of Indiana.
On June 26, 1949 she married her soul-mate Nicholas R. Kozak.
They spent 58 very special years together.
Gloria retired from the Credit Bureau of Ashtabula as the Collection and Reporting Manager after 30 years of service.
Gloria loved spending time with her family and traveling with her husband.
Many times over the years she volunteered her time to different groups, such as PTA/PTO, Homeroom mother, Band Boosters, Little League, Cub Scouts and as a Gray Lady at Ashtabula General Hospital. She was a long time member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, she also spent many years teaching Sunday school to children.
Surviving her is her husband and caregiver Nick; a brother, George Heiskanen and children, David (Sharon) Kozak, Steven (Theresa Buckley) Kozak and Peggy (Kevin) Williams as well as grandchildren, Michael (Tricia) Williams, Kyle Williams, Steven Kozak and Chad Kozak and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, George & Helen Heiskanen, grandparents, Hiskas & Hilda Heiskanen and her Aunt & Uncle Laina & Jalmer Sandfield.
Funeral services will be Thursday (June 7th) at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4901 Main Ave. Ashtabula with Mother Barbara Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
Calling hours will be Wednesday (June 6th) from 6 to 8 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula and on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Western Reserve for their kindness and special care during Gloria’s last days.

Arloene M. Hoisington
Friday, June 1st, 2007
Arloene M. (Welser) Hoisington, 105, a resident of the Jefferson Health Center the past 18 years, died Tuesday morning, May 29 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born February 21, 1902 in Eagleville, the daughter of Albert J. & Nellie E. (Luke) Rhoads and has lived in the Jefferson area most of her life. After graduation from high school, Arloene attended the teacher’s training academy at Kingsville Normal School and did self-study work. She attended Kent State University. She taught in one room school houses around Ashtabula Co.
She and her first husband, Raymond Welser built and operated a summer resort at Lake Weslemkoon, Ontario, her second husband, Lee Hoisington and her developed and operated a mobile home park in Florida before retiring in Jefferson.
She was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church and loved working crossword puzzles, wrote poetry & short stores, of which some were published, enjoyed reading, doing crafts and loved the outdoors.
Survivors include two daughters, June J. Phillips of Jefferson, and Shirley R. Lindberg of Austinburg, two grandchildren, Kristine M. (Philip) Pasterak of Chicago, IL and Kristopher J. (Heather) Lindberg of Conneaut, a step-grandson, Culver L. (Sharon) Rogers of Austin, Texas and three great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, nine step-great-great grandchildren and two step-sisters, Mary Ellen Diedrich & Nedra Regnone
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Raymond Welser in 1978, her second husband, Lee Hoisington in 1991, a brother, Arlington A. Rhoads and a sister, Alberta E. Welser.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman, pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashtabula Lyons Club and the Jefferson United Methodist Church, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Albert E. Perry
Friday, June 1st, 2007
Albert E. Perry, 77, E. 21st St., Ashtabula, died late Thursday evening at the University Hospitals in Cleveland.
He was born January 4, 1930 in Ashtabula, the son of Jay & Mary (Koskondy) Perry and has resided in Ashtabula all of his life. Mr. Perry was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was married to Mabelle A. Gill on November 30, 1950 in Ashtabula.
Mr. Perry owned and operated Door Service Co., retiring in 2000.
He was a member of the VFW Post #943 and the EAC Club. He enjoyed golf, archery and bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Mabelle, two children, Kathryn G. Perry of Rock Creek and Jeffrey G. Perry, three grandchildren, Christopher, Michael & Jason Perry, two great-grandchildren, William & Emily Perry, a brother, Elmer Perry of Marietta and a sister, Bonnie DelPonte of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edward Perry.
A celebration gathering will be held Sunday from 3-5 P. M. at the East Ashtabula Club, 2320 Columbus Ave., Ashtabula.
Private burial will take place in Saybrook Cemetery. Contributions may be directed to the family, in c/o Mabelle Perry, 1210 E. 21st St., #103, Ashtabula, OH 44004.
The Ashtabula Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, is handling arrangements.

Edward M. Pirigyi
Thursday, May 31st, 2007
Edward M. Pirigyi, 72 of West 30th St. Ashtabula died Wednesday (May 30th) at his home.
He was born March 26, 1935 in Ashtabula the son of Joseph and Mary (Cortical) Pirigyi and has been a lifetime area resident.
He is a member of St. Joseph Church.
He enjoyed fishing, listening to the radio, playing with his dogs and going for rides in the car.
Surviving him are his brother, Joseph (Sue) Pirigyi of Saybrook Twp; a sister, Mary (Yale) Wright of Ashtabula and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Louis Pirigyi.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday (June 4th) at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Ave. Ashtabula with Rev. Philip Miller officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Saybrook Township.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Protective League, 5970 Green Rd. Kingsville, Ohio 44048.

Vada G. Shafer
Wednesday, May 30th, 2007
Vada G. Shafer, 92 former Ashtabula resident died Saturday (May 26th) at St. Joseph Hospital in Howell, Michigan. She was born June 22, 1914 in Friars Hill, West Virginia the daughter of Oakey and Fountie (Crane) McMillion and has been a Ashtabula area resident most of her life.
She was a graduate of Jefferson High School and Youngstown School of Cosmetology. She owned Vada’s Beauty Shop for twenty years retiring in 1972. She is a member of the Ashtabula First United Methodist Church.
Surviving her is a son Russell P. Shafer, Jr. of Howell, Michigan; three grandchildren, Kamrin, Keri and Kevin and a great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Russell on April 12, 2007; a daughter, Patricia Ann; four brothers, Herbert, Clyde, Howard and Glenn and two sisters, Gertrude Moses and Audrey Jacobs.
A memorial service will be Saturday (June 2nd) at 11:00 AM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. John Germaine of The First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church 4506 Elm Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.

Paul L. Davis
Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
Paul L. Davis, 57 formerly of Kingsville died unexpectedly (May 24th) at his home in Naples, Florida. He was born December 3, 1949 in Kingsville, Ohio the son of Howard L and Leola M. (Palmer) Davis and he has lived in Florida since 1983.
He was Owner-Operator of Davis Shutters in Florida.
Surviving him are his mother, Leola M. Clark of Naples, Florida, two daughters, Heather and Heidi Davis, a son William Paul Davis; two brothers, Jerry Davis of North Carolina and Mark Davis of Florida, three sisters, Aldine Roxberry of Naples, Florida, Penny Adams of Pennsylvania and Kristie Lechefsky of Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Friday (June 1st) at 11:00 AM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Douglas Wright of the Ashtabula First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hours will be Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.
