Roy C. Ritter, Jr.
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008
Roy C. Ritter, Jr., age 75 of Ashtabula, died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at his residence.
Born January 19, 1933 in Jefferson, Ohio, he was the son of the late Roy C. & Lorene (Knapp) Ritter. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1950 and from Case Institute of Technology in 1954 as a metallurgical engineer. He served his country in the U. S. Army Signal Corps.
He retired from Elkem Metals Co., formerly Union Carbide Metals Co. in 1991 after 35 years of service. He held supervisory and executive positions at the Ashtabula & Marietta, Ohio plants and at the Pittsburgh, PA office headquarters throughout his career.
Roy was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church of Ashtabula where he served on the stewardship and finance committees and the church council. He served as a lay assistant, usher and sang in the choir. During his career he was a member of many civic and professional groups, including the American Institute of Mining & Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Metals & American Foundry Society. He served on the Board of Directors for the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center and later on the Citizen Advisory Committee.
Roy was an active member of many branches of Masonry. His highest honors came when he was elected to serve as Grand Commander of the Knights Templar of Ohio in the 2003-04 terms. In 2005, the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Masons elected him to receive their highest honor of 33rd degree in Grand Rapids, MI. He belonged to Tuscan Lodge, #342 F. & A. M. in Jefferson, where he served as Master in 1985, ‘86 &’87; Past High Priest of American Union Chapter #1 of Royal Arch Masons, Marietta & Jefferson Chapter #141; Past Master of Marietta Council #78 of Royal and Selected Masons and Conneaut Council #40.. He became a Knight Templar at Marietta Commandery #50 and transferred to Cache Commandery #27 in Conneaut, where he served as Commander in 1983. He is also a member of St. George Commandery #76 and holds honorary memberships in many other Commanderies.
He also belonged to the Ashtabula Co. Scottish Rite Club; Ohio Priory #18, Knights of the York Cross of Honor; Leroy F. Shanower Council #149, Allied Masonic Degrees; Charlemagne Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine; Our Savior Tabernacle No. XXXIII H.R.A.K.T.P.; Cleveland Rite College #13; Royal Order of Scotland; El Kadir Grotto M.O.V.P.E.R. & Al Koran Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. He received the Honorary Legion of Honor from DeMolay International.
Roy participated in athletics in high school, through college and in adult leagues. He loved baseball, football, baseball, handball, golf and workouts at the YMCA. He enjoyed fishing and boating at the family cottage at Jack’s Lake in Ontario every summer. Just in recent years it was discovered through a genealogy search that Roy is a direct descendant of Nicholas & Elinor Knapp who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1620 as part of the Winthrop Expedition from England.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Hemming) Ritter, whom he married on September 15, 1956, three children, Denise (Robert) McClanahan of Concord, Roy C. Ritter, III of Napa, CA & Lee Ann (Dean) Miller of Summit, NJ, four grandchildren, Eric & Kyle McClanahan & Lauren & Kristen Miller, a sister, Rita Rebovich & a nephew, Todd Rebovich, both of Gahanna.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, Jane Sawyer and a nephew, Scott Rebovich.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 12:00 noon at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Ave., Ashtabula with Pastor Karen Tews officiating. The memorial will begin with a Masonic Service conducted by Tuscan Lodge #342, F. & A. M. Private burial of ashes will take place in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 A. M. until the time of service Saturday at the church. The family requests contributions be made to the church at the above address, envelopes will also be at the church. The Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.

Charles Joseph Skidmore
Sunday, August 10th, 2008
Charles Joseph Skidmore, age 81, St. Rt. 307 East, Jefferson, died Saturday morning at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
He was born September 24, 1926 in Jefferson, the son of Bland & Pauline (Zieger) Skidmore and has been an area resident all of his life. Mr. Skidmore was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in World War II. He was married to Margaret Kelner on July 25, 1953 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson.
Mr. Skidmore was a truck driver with Skidmore Excavating, retiring in 1988. He previously worked with Skidmore & Chah, the G. C. Meade Co. and owned and operated Skidmore Gulf station. He was a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, where he served as an altar boy as a youngster and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. When younger he was very active in playing baseball, enjoyed football, hunting, bowling and fishing, especially trips to Quebec with his brother. He also enjoyed being with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, two children, Timothy (Vanessa) Skidmore of Jefferson and Louise (Rick) Cape of Pinnacle, NC, a granddaughter, Marie Skidmore of Jefferson and a sister, Catherine (Mike) Uhrain of Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, David in infancy & Anthony at birth, a step-granddaughter, Heather Armstrong, four brothers, Nick, Andy, Jim & Bob Skidmore, three step-brothers, Frank, Ed & John Mayer and a step-sister, Helen Zipperer.
The funeral mass will be Tuesday at 12:00 P. M. at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, 32 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Wassie officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery where Geneva Post #6846 will provide full military honors.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 11:00 A. M. to Noon at the church prior to the service. Memorial contributions are requested to be made to the church. The Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.

Janet E. Haskins
Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
Janet E. Haskins, 89 of Forrest Ridge in Sheffield Twp. died Wednesday (Aug. 6th) in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born December 30, 1918 in Erie, Pa. the daughter of Fred and Jean (Sanford) Stossmeister.
She married Ralph A. Haskins on September 2, 1940 and was a homemaker most of her life taking care of her family.
She is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula; the Kingsville TOPS Club and various book clubs. She enjoyed cooking, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Surviving her is her husband, Ralph; a son Gary (Nancy Mudd) Haskins of Ashtabula, two daughters, Barbara Wagner of Chardon, Ohio and Christine (David) Lehnert of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren, Ryan Haskins, Zach Haskins, Tyler Haskins, Sean Ollila, Dr. Chad Ollila, Ashley Lehnert and Molly Lehnert; two great-grandson, Carson and Case Ollila and a brother, Charles Stossmeister of Erie, Pa. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Theodore and Robert Stossmeister and two sisters, Dorothy Harler and Betty Pratt.
A memorial service will be Sunday (Aug. 10th) at 2:00 PM at the Ashtabula First United Methodist Church, 4506 Elm Ave. Ashtabula with Rev. Barbara Rosenberry officiating. Burial will be in Gageville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in her memory can be made to The First United Methodist Church, 4506 Elm Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 or to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Western Reserve, and to Villa at the Lake for their compassionate care. The Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 West Jefferson St. Jefferson, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl H. Hanson

Pearl H. Hanson of North Ridge Rd. West, Saybrook Twp died on Saturday at the home of her daughter.
Surviving her is her daughter, Jeri (Michael) Driscoll of Saybrook; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward C. Hanson in 1990 and by two sons, Dana C. and Lee E. Hanson both in 2006.
A memorial service will be Monday (Today) at 2:00 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Alisa Nierzejewski, Certified Celebrant officiating.
Calling hour will be Monday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.

Rose Marie Polombo
Saturday, August 2nd, 2008
Rose Marie Polombo, 83 of South Ridge Rd. East, Geneva died Friday (August 1st) at University Hospital of Geneva. She was born July 11, 1925 in Washington, Pa. the daughter of William and Mary (Compatori) Vitro. Her mother died in childbirth and she was raised by her father and step-mother, William and Frances Vitro.
She had worked along with her husband, Nick at the Polombo’s Restaurant at Geneva-on-the-Lake and at various Grocery Stores in Saybrook Twp.
She enjoyed crafts, ceramics, art and sewing. She had painted several pictures.
Surviving her are four children, Nicholas Polombo of Geneva, Bonita (Roy) Wallace of Ocala, Florida, Diane (Al Castillo) Gaylord of Geneva and Donna (Dr. Larry) Hennessey of Cape Coral, Florida; six grandchildren, Adam, Ryan, Lauren, Marisa, Adam and Michael; two great-grandchildren, Janthony and Alivia and a sister, Theresa Cutrara of Cheswick, Pa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step mother and hr husband, Nick in 1998.
A mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday (August 5th) at 10:00 AM at The Assumption Church, 594 West Main St., Geneva with Rev. Father John Mulqueen officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Geneva.
Calling hours will be Monday (August 4th) from 6 to 8 PM at the Geneva Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 323 South Broadway, Geneva. Memorial contributions in her memory can be made to The Assumption Church, 594 West Main St. Geneva, Ohio 44041.

Ruby M. Waldron

Ruby Marie Waldron, 77 of Ninety Rd. West in Plymouth Twp. died Thursday (July 31st) at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born May 30, 1931 in Rockridge, West Virginia the daughter of Hollie Martin and Mary Belle (Dawson) Smith.
She married John Waldron on May 5, 1951. She is a member of the West Ave. Church of Christ in Ashtabula and the Ashtabula Senior Citizen Center. She enjoyed crocheting, playing Bingo and spending time with her family.
Surviving her is her husband; seven children, Rita (Joseph) Fetters of Jefferson, Christine (Homer) Downie of Ashtabula, John (Carolyn) Waldron of Ashtabula, Richard (Luann) Waldron of Oscela, Indiana, David Waldron of Ashtabula, Nancy (Michael) Jacobs of Rio Rancho, New Mexico and Gene (Elizabeth) Waldron of Delaware, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jason, Matthew, Jared, Justin, Megan, Joseph, Ashley, Kevin and Carly; seven great-grandchildren, Payton, Ethan John, Landon, Madison, Aurora, Courtney and Kaylee; three brothers, Donald Smith of Athens, Tenn., Delbert of Lashmeet, West Virginia and Dexter Smith of Ashtabula and three sisters, Betty Moore of Ashtabula, Joanne Arlington of Avilla, Indiana and Janette Davis of Piedmont, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents and by four brothers, Estel, Cecil, Orville and Lee.
A memorial service will be Monday (August 4th) at 5:00 PM at the West Ave. Church of Christ, 5901 West Ave. Ashtabula with Pastor Mike Williams and Pastor Terry Siverd officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park in Princeton, West Virginia.
Calling hour will be on Monday from 4:00 PM until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Lung Association. Envelopes will be available at the church. The Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula is in charge of arrangements.

Charles McFarland
Monday, July 28th, 2008
Charles R. McFarland, 49 of Arcadia, Florida, passed away on July 15th at the Hospice House in Venice, Florida. He was born April 9, 1959 at Ashtabula, Ohio the son of William D. McFarland and Hazel M. Ouillette.
He graduated from Jefferson Area High School in 1977 where he played the drums in the high school band. He was a boy scout and played Little League ball in Jefferson, and attended Sunday School at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. He worked for Barfield Wrecker Service in Bradenton, Florida and Sears in Sarasota, Fl.
Survivors include his wife, Adrianna, his mother, Hazel McFarland Ouillette of Jefferson, his sister, Susan McFarland-Addair-Bluhm of New Lyme, two nephews, one niece and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his Father, William McFarland and his grandparents, Ruth & Rollo McFarland, Ethel Downs Hall & Charles B. Downs.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 1st, at 2:00 P.M. at the North Trumbull Cemetery, Rt. 534 in Trumbull Twp., Ohio with the Rev. Richard Jones officiating. A celebration of life dinner will follow at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 41 E. Jefferson Street, Jefferson.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, P.O. Box 182039 Dept. 013, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2039, or Tidewell Hospice & Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, Fl. 34238. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Jefferson home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Homes, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio.
