Pauline R. Makar, age 83, St. Rt. 307 South, Austinburg Twp., died early Sunday morning at the UHHS-Memorial Hospital of Geneva following a lingering illness.
She was born December 10, 1925 in Lenox Twp., the daughter of Owen & Cora (Alfred) Huser and has lived in Ashtabula Co. all of her life. She was a graduate of Rock Creek High School and was married to Vladimir “Walter” Makar on June 7, 1947.
Mrs. Makar was a member of the Austinburg First United Church of Christ where she was active with the Over 49er’s. She was a member of the Austinburg Grange, she was an avid poet and played the accordion, enjoyed crocheting and baking, being a ribbon winning award winner with her chocolate chip cookies. Her and Mr. Makar loved to travel and visited all the states except Alaska. They also wintered for several years in Sarasota, FL. She loved being with her grandchildren, family and friends.
Survivors include two children, Gary L. Makar of Phoenix, AZ and Cyndi S. (Lance) Loveridge of Pierpont Twp. and four grandchildren, Anthony, Tonya & Amanda Loveridge & Nicole Makar.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vladimir “Walter” Makar in 2004, a daughter, Melissa in infancy, brother, Forrest Huser & sister, Leona Mousling.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Allison Milligan & Rev. Gordon Emerson officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Austinburg Twp.
Calling hours will be held Friday, 1/23/09 from 5-7 P. M. and Saturday, 1/24/09 from 10-11 A. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Austinburg First United Church of Christ, 2870 St. Rt. 307, Austinburg, OH 44010.

Richmond Bennett
November 20, 1925 - January 16, 2009
Services: January 30th, 2009 at 1:00 PM
Richmond Bennett, age 83, E. Union Rd., Lenox Twp., died early Friday morning in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
He was born November 20, 1925 in Charleston, WV, the son of Waldo Emerson & Augusta (Richmond) Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a graduate of Morris-Harvey College, received his Masters Degree from Montana State University and received his Doctorate Degree from University of Arizona. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Marines. He was married to Catheryn MacDonald on June 17, 1967 in Tucson, AZ.
Mr. Bennett was an exploration geologist with Columbia Gas of Ohio, retiring in 1994 after 20 years of service with them. He was a member of the Geological Society of America and enjoyed hunting, photography and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Catheryn M. Bennett and a nephew and niece, Robert May and Mary May.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Laura May.
Memorial services will be held Friday, January 30, 2009 at 1:00 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Pastor Bill McMinn of the Eagleville Bible Church officiating. No calling hours will be observed.

Nancy M. Flack
January 23, 1951 - January 14, 2009

Nancy M. Flack, 57 of North Ridge East, Ashtabula died Wednesday (Jan. 14th) at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born January 23, 1951 in Ashtabula the daughter of Lewis E. and Lillian Marie (Kendall) Flack and has been a lifetime area resident.
She was a 1969 graduate of Ashtabula High School.. She ran the Nancy Marie Bridal Shop in Ashtabula from 1990 to 2005 and also worked for various other retail stores in the Ashtabula area.
She was a member of the Great Ohio Coaster Club and a National Roller Coast Club. She enjoyed roller coasters, gardening, ceramics, her fish pond, being outside and her cats. Surviving her is her mother of Ashtabula; her long time companion, Michael Briggs; her brother, Jimmy (Louise) Flack of Ashtabula; two sisters, Carol (Murell) Goffrey of Ashtabula and Pamela Flack of Ashtabula and two nephews, Bradley and Brian Flack. She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be Monday (Jan. 19th) at 1:00 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Michael Legg of the Ashtabula First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson.
Calling hours will be Sunday (Jan. 18th) from 6 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Protective League, 5970 Green Rd. Kingsville, Ohio 44048.

Betty Jo Kirk
February 2, 1935 - January 13, 2009
Services: January 17th, 2009 at 11:00 AM
Betty Jo Kirk, 73 of King Rd. North Kingsville died Tuesday (Jan. 13th) at her home after a long illness. She was born February 2, 1935 in Atlanta, Ga. the daughter of Frank Jackson and Iva (Johnson) Baskette.
She had worked with Roller Plastics; drove bus for Happy Hearts School and worked along with her husband at Gateway Transportation until her retirement.
She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula where she had been a Deaconess; she is a member and Past Matron of Orion Chapter #12 Order of Eastern Star. She had work as a Precinct Worker for elections; been involved with Boy Scouts and was a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed bowling, country music, watching “American Idol” and going to Florida.
Surviving her are four children, Regina Jo (Terrance) McConnell of North Kingsville, Eddie L. (Denise) Kirk of Ashtabula, Renee L. (Fred) Minor of North Kingsville and John F. (Cynthia) Kirk of Ashtabula; ten grandchildren, John Jr., Amy Jo., Adam J., Joshua, Kevin, Brian, Chad, Brittany, Brenden and Brady; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Rachel) Baskette of Stockbridge, Georgia and a sister, Beverly (Jim) Holley of Dahlonega, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Reginald L. Kirk in 2002; a sister, Louise Key and a half-brother, Vester Amerson.
Funeral services will be Saturday (Jan. 17th) at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 4317 Park Ave. Ashtabula with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Long officiating. Burial will be in Eastlake Cemetery in North Kingsville.
Calling hours will be Friday (Jan. 16th) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd,. Ashtabula with a Eastern Star Service at 3:45 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the family.

Ruth L. Palmer
April 15, 1919 - January 14, 2009

Ruth L. Palmer, 89 of Gulfview Towers, Ashtabula died Wednesday (Jan. 14th) at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born April 15, 1919 in Titusville, Pennsylvania the daughter of Alfred Magnus and Florence Elizabeth Anderson.
She had worked in accounting for Zehrco Plastics in Ashtabula until her retirement in 1984. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading.
Surviving her is her daughter, Elizabeth Small of Mentor, Ohio; a son, William (Antonio) Palmer of Lakeland, Florida; five grandchildren, Bradley, Michelle, William, Steven and Valerie, numerous great-grandchildren and her special friends at the Gulfview Towers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Alfred and Hugh Anderson and a sister, Lelia Longwell.
Funeral services will be Saturday (Jan. 17th) at 2:00 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Thomas McCain of the Pentecostal Church of God officiating. Burial will take place later at Ridgeview Cemetery in Ashtabula.
Memorial contributions in her name can be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.

Evelyn J. Shore
September 5, 1926 - January 7, 2009

Evelyn J. Shore, age 82, W. Beech St., Jefferson, died Wednesday morning in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
She was born September 5, 1926 in Grand Haven, MI, the daughter of Henry & Grace (Mulder) VerBerkmoes and has lived most of her adult life in Conneaut and in Jefferson since 1981. She was married to Robert B. Shore on January 17, 1981 at the Amboy United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shore began her working career with the Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce from 1948-55, then worked for four years on the U. S. Naval Base in Mare Island, CA, she then ran the office for Dean Wible Motors and Holly Motors in Conneaut more than 25 years before retiring in 1988.
She was a member of the Amboy United Methodist Church, the Grottettes and the Ceramic Club. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, knitting and was proud of her green thumb in growing house plants.
Survivors include her husband, Robert, a son, William H. (Brenda) Sanger of Conneaut, three step-children, Patti J. Sperry of Madison, Ronald J. (Norma) Shore of Annandale, VA & James E. (Judy) Shore of Memphis, TN, seven grandchildren, Brandy Thomas, William “Joe” Sanger, Lisa A. (Grant) Weimer, Mark Sperry, Carrie (Matt) Perzanowski, Jennifer (Christopher) Carlin & Lindsay Shore, one great-grandson, William Tyrone Thomas, a sister, Charlotte Soule of Spring Lake, MI & two brothers, Hank VerBerkmoes of Lake Lyndon, MI & Harold VerBerkmoes of Englewood, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, Steven L. Sperry, brothers, Cornelius, Edwin, & Donald VerBerkmoes and a sister, Anna Davis.
Memorial services will be held Monday at 7:00 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Tami Toothman-Shoup of the Amboy United Methodist Church officiating. Scattering of ashes will take place at the families convenience.
No calling hours will be observed. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004. Guest register book and obituary on-line at fleming-billman.com.
