Robert L. Wright, 70 of Orchard Rd. Ashtabula Twp. Died Thursday (Feb. 19th) at the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born May 22, 1938 in Somerset, Pa the son of Mahlon and Mary (Robinette) Wright.
He married Patricia Shaw on January 1, 1983. He was employed with Caterpillar Corporation in Mentor and he retired from the Ashtabula Clinic in 1994 as the building superintendent. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson that he won. He went to 47 out of 50 states on his Harley and also parts of Canada. He enjoyed going to Eddie’s Grill where he met his friends. He was also known as “Mr. Fixit” and he enjoyed working in his workshop and creating things.
Surviving him are his wife; three sons, Robert L. (Troy) Wright, Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., Kenneth (Dawn) Wright of Wewoka, OK, and Mark (Shannon) Swanson of East Springfield, Pa.; two daughters, Lori (Pat) Skettle of Cleveland and Lisa (Stephen) Eppich of Grafton, Oh.; eight grandchildren, Mitchell, Matthew, Brianna, Raeanna, Elliot, Emerson, Clayton and Patricia Mae; four brothers, Ray of York, SC, Roy of Myrtle Beach, SC, Jim of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., John of Norwell, Mass; four sisters, Norma Watkins of Seabring, Florida, Ruth Becker of Crystal, Minn., Helen Dattalo of Minneapolis, Minn, and Janet Price of Waynesboro, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Barbara Ann in infancy and by three brothers, Charles, Paul and George.
Funeral services will be Monday (Feb. 23rd) at 12:00 PM noon at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula, Ohio with Rev. Dr. Stephen Long of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula officiating. Calling hours will be Sunday (Feb. 22nd) from 2 to 4 and 6to8 at the funeral home and on Monday from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral Home.
Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 or to the Animal Protective League, 5970 Green Rd. Kingsville, Ohio 44048.

Patricia A. Spurlock
August 7, 1940 - February 19, 2009
Services: February 24th, 2009 at 11:00 AM
Patricia A. Spurlock, age 68, Hines Rd., Sheffield Twp., died Thursday morning at her residence.
She was born August 7, 1940 in Cleveland, the daughter of Paul & Thelma (Barnes) Bouska and has lived in the Jefferson area the past 45 years, coming from Cleveland. They moved to Jefferson to give their children a better life. Mrs. Spurlock has been employed with the Gazette Newspaper for 12 years.
Mrs. Spurlock was an avid Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan.
Survivors include seven children, Denise (Ron) Palma of Ashtabula, Charles Spurlock of Columbia Station, Darryl Spurlock of Dorset Twp., Patrick Spurlock of Cleveland, Lori (Charles) Bradford of Kingsville Twp., Brian (Phyllis) Spurlock of Cleveland & Jerome (Adina) Spurlock of Jefferson, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister, Marlene (Wes) Spurlock & brother, Butch Bouska, both of Cleveland. She also leaves behind many friends, especially those at the Gazette.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Roger in childhood.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Pastor Kenneth Roberts of the Pentecostal Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Griggs Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 6-8 P. M. at the funeral home.

Emmett J. Hodgkinson
August 10, 1961 - February 18, 2009
Services: February 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 AM
Emmett J. Hodgkinson, 47 of State Route #193, Jefferson, Ohio died Wednesday (February 18th) at his home after a long illness. He was born August 10, 1961 in Ashtabula the son of Willard and Lillian (Spencer) Hodgkinson and has been a lifetime area resident.
He was a 1980 graduate of Edgewood High School and was employed at Geneva Pipeline Co. in Geneva.
He was active in the 4-H when his children where younger and enjoyed going to horse shows. He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, gardening, Remote control flying helicopters and watching Ghost Hunters on TV.He also was the owner & operator of Hodgkinson Trenching from 1995-1999.
Surviving him are his mother, Lillian Hodgkinson of Ashtabula; three children, Tiffany, Megan and Alex Hodgkinson all of Pierpont; his fiancée’ and care giver, Laurie Gammon of Jefferson; two sisters, Glenyess (Jesse) Cook of Ashtabula and Yvonne (Dennis) Deitz of Kingsville and a brother, Mark (Megann) Hodgkinson of Ashtabula. He was preceded in death by his father and by a brother, Willard Hodgkinson.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 7:00 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Neroy Carter officiating.
No calling hours will be observed. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Wilma J. Wente
September 16, 1932 - February 15, 2009
Services: at 12:00 AM
Wilma J. Wente, age 76, S. Ridge East, Ashtabula Twp., died Sunday afternoon at her residence following an extended illness.
For the past 45 years, Mrs. Wente was involved in several bowling leagues holding various offices, she was an avid bingo player, enjoyed going to the casino, playing cards and doing crafts. She was co-owner of F & J CB Sales & Service with her husband Frank.
Survivors include two children, Kathleen A. (Phil) Bliss and Randy L. Wente, both of Ashtabula, four grandchildren, Phil Bliss, Jr., Michael Bliss, Stephanie Sherry & Adam Bliss, six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Hunter, Brandon, Julia, Keagan & Bailey and a sister, Ruth Cartner of N. Kingsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank in 2005, her first husband, Richard Cartner in 1958 and a sister, Maxine Offenberg in 1999.
At Mrs. Wente request, no services or calling hours will be observed. A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date at the family’s convenience. The Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.
Memorial offerings may be directed to the family, in c/o Kathleen Bliss, 1601 Carterland Dr., Ashtabula, OH 44004.

Dorothy M. Slabaugh
December 13, 1906 - February 7, 2009
Services: February 21st, 2009 at 11:00 AM
Dorothy Marie Slabaugh, age 102, of Sebring, FL and former Jefferson, OH resident, passed away on February 7, 2009 at the Fairway Pines Assisted Living Center in Sebring where she has resided the past two years.
She was born December 13, 1906 to William & Cora (Shingleton) Price on a farm near Griggs corners, Denmark Twp., Ohio. She was one of six children. Dorothy attended the one room school at Griggs corners before they moved from the farm when she was 13 years old to Jefferson. She attended Jefferson School, graduating in 1926.P> She met and married Erwin J. Slabaugh, a Jefferson native, on September 15, 1928. Dorothy was a housewife and mother before she started working doing credit searches at the Ashtabula Co. Courthouse for Record Data and several other companies from 1960-1990. She lived in Jefferson, where she was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, until 2003, when she moved to Sebring, FL to be near her daughter, Shirley.
Survivors include two daughter, Marilyn J. Vause of Louisville, KY and Shirley Ann Slabaugh of Sebring, FL, two grandchildren, John D. (Lauren) Vause and Susanne Marie Price, twin great-grandsons, Aaron & Matthew Vause, all of Louisville, KY and many nieces, nephews and her beloved cat, Princess.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 48 years, Erwin on September 19, 1976, three sisters, Maude (Thomas) Mills, Zora (Harry) Church & Mariettia (Marvin) Brake, two brothers, Richard (Mami Stowers) Price & Howard (Virginia Teter) Price and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10-11 A. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice, 4840 Sun ‘N Lake Blvd., Sebring, FL 33872.

Betty J. Gehalo
December 10, 1922 - February 6, 2009
Services: February 14th, 2009 at 4:00 PM
Betty J. Gehalo, 86, of Cherry Lane Ashtabula died Friday (Feb. 6th) at the Kemper House in Olmstead Falls, Ohio after a long illness. She was born December 10, 1922 in Ashtabula the daughter of Edwin and Lara (Bagnall) Wegmiller.
She was a long time and active member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula. She was an also a long time member of the Pinochle Club of Ashtabula. She enjoyed baking, canning, knitting and spending time with her family.
She is survived by four sons, Steven (Shirley) Gehalo, Jr. of Coral Springs, Florida, David (Jane) Gehalo of Telephone, Texas, William (Kathleen) Gehalo of Olmstead Falls, Ohio and Thomas (Donna0 Gehalo of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; six grandchildren, Steven III, Suzanne, Brian, Allison, T.J. and Austin; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Steven, Sr. in 2006; two brothers, Raymond and Paul Wegmiller and a sister, Viola Natchuk.
Funeral services will be Saturday (Feb. 14th) at 4:00 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Barbara Roseberry of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling hour will be Saturday from 3:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

James Brown Jr.
February 20, 1930 - February 4, 2009
Services: February 11th, 2009 at 1:00 PM
James Brown, Jr., 78, of West 52nd St. Ashtabula died Wednesday (Feb. 4th) at the Carrington Park Nursing Home in Ashtabula. He was born February 20, 1930 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas the son of James and Beatrice (Pasehall) Brown, Sr.
He had worked as Supervisor for the Ohio Department of Transportation until his retirement. He enjoyed yard wok and helping others.
Surviving him seven children, Sandy Coleman of Ashtabula, Latoya Brown of Painesville, Robert (Jackie) Gaston of Ashtabula, Ricky Smith of Ashtabula, Stanley Smith of Ashtabula, Darin (Stephanie) Smith of Cleveland and Randy Brown of Ashtabula; seventeen grandchildren; six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida Brown in 2006; twin sons, Jerry and Terry Brown; four sisters, Ersell Brown, Susie Steele, Mittie Brown, Marie Brown and two brothers, Benjamin and Harold Brown.
Funeral service will be Wednesday (Feb. 11th) at 1:00 PM at the Peoples Baptist Church, 3937 West Ave. Ashtabula with Pastor John Salters of the Cleveland Ave. G.O. Ministries Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery in Ashtabula.
Calling hour will be Wednesday from 12:00 PM until the time of service at the church. Contributions can be made to the family. The Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula is in charge of arrangements.
