NAOMI JAMES
Naomi P[auline] James, 74, of 332 Prosperity Rd., Waverly, died 6:29 P.M. Thursday [05 Sep 1991] in Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus. She was born May 16, 1917, in Adams County, Ohio, to Elbert Lyman and Hazel Opal Herdman Grooms. She was married on June 30, 1935 to Rev. Raymond E. James, who preceded her in death on January 14 1963. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Estel and Geraldine James, Waverly; three daughters, Mrs. William (Mary) Steinhauer, Piketon, Miss Martha James, South Bloomingville, and Mrs. Ray (Donna) Diles, Columbus; thirteen grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Elbert Grooms Jr., Latham; two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Ruth) Stulley, and Miss Norma Grooms, both of Waverly. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Given and Paul Grooms. Mrs. James was a member of Spargursville Church of Christ in Christian Union. Funeral service will be 2 P.M. Sunday at the Waverly McKibban Memorial Church of Christ in Christian Union, with Rev. Donald Pfeifer and Rev. J. Eddie Powers officiating. Burial will be in Waverly Evergreen Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, 2-8 p.m. Saturday, and one half hour prior to the service on Sunday.
BERTHA JANE
Bertha Jayne, 74, of Buck Hollow Road, Beaver, died Monday at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. She was born 01 Nov 1925 in Wheelersburg KY, the daughter of John Brack and Myrtle (Caudill) Rigsby. She was a homemaker and a member of Mary Chapel United Baptist Church, Waverly. She was preceded in death on 20 Jun 1995 by her husband, Robert Jayne, whom she married 10 Mar 1950. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Paul Rigsby, and one granddaughter, Tammy Conley. She is survived by five sons, Woodrow (Sybilla) Conley, Lakeland FL, Ernie (Cindy) Conley, Beaver, Tim (Jackie) Jayne, Waverly, Robert (Connie) Jayne Jr., Beaver, and Wayne (Karla) Jayne Sr, Beaver; seven brothers, Roy Rigsby, Stoutsville, James (Mark) Rigsby, Beaver, Joseph (Joe) Rigsby, Columbus, Herman Rigsby, Lancaster, Thurman Rigsby, Waverly, Corbett Rigsby, Columbus, and John B. Rigsby Jr, Columbus; five sisters, Martha Bliss, New Boston, Ethel Lehman, Apple Valley CA, Mary Justice, Peebles, Margaret Smith, Groveport, and Garnet Sue Coston, San Antonio TX; and 18 grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mary Chapel United Baptist Church with Elders Arvil Murray Jr., Samuel Murray and John Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Union Cemetery. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Home, Beaver, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

SAM JEFFRIES
Sam Jeffries, Jr., 35, of Otway, died Wednesday, June 19, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born January 31, 1961, in Bedford. Mr. Jeffries was a member of the Goins Brothers Bluegrass Band, a former member of the Boys from Indiana Bluegrass Band and one of the original members of the Peach Mountain Boys. He is survived by his parents, Sam and Shirley A. (Schroeder) Jefferies of Otway; two sisters, Sandra Pierce of Otway and Susan Jeffries of Otway; three brothers, Jeffrey Jeffries of Randolph, Jim Rogers Jeffries of Blue Creek and Jesse Jeffries of Londonderry; and his grandmother, Georgian Schroeder of Garretsville. Graveside services were held Sunday, June 23, at the White Oak Cemetery, with Rev. Sam Fillmore officiating. Ellis-Beam Funeral Home in West Union was in charge of the arrangements.
AUDRA JONES
Audra O. Jones, 76, of Peebles, died Saturday, July 31, at her residence. Ms. Jones was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Lewis Co., KY, daughter of the late Vernon and Mernia (McCane) McCann. Survived by husband, William Jones, whom she married Feb. 2, 1944; five sons, Carl of Seaman, Ray of Hillsboro, Keith of Seaman, Tony of Seaman and Rob Jones, Seaman; five brothers, Don of Cherry Fork, Russell of Peebles, Harry of Cincinnati, Leroy of Peebles and Delbert McCann, Wilmington; three sisters, Susie Sheely, Peebles, Dorothy Storer, Florida, Mabel Ames, Missouri; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Peebles with Dave Hopkins officiating. Interment followed in Tranquility Cemetery. Memorials: Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, KY 41056.
SALINA JONES
Salina Jane Jones, nee Antrim, was born in Adams County, Ohio, December 5, 1829, and died near Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin, June 1, 1893; aged 64 years, 9 months and 25 days. When Mrs. Jones was but 11 years of age, her parents moved to Iowa, and also lived for a short time in Illinois; from there she came with her husband to settle in Grant County, Wis. From here they moved to Nebraska, where Mr. Jones died, when Mrs. Jones again moved to Grant Co., and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Frankenhoff, until death called her away. Her death came quickly and unexpectedly. She enjoyed good health during the day, and went to bed, not feeling at all that her end was so near, and about 11 p.m. she got up and came to the door where her daughter was sleeping and woke her. She went back to bed, and lived only a short time. For some time Mrs. Jones had trouble with her heart, which was also the cause of her death. Her husband and one child have crossed before her the river of death. Seven children remain to mourn the loss of a loving mother; Mrs. B. W. Frankenhoff, Mrs. A. C. Wood in Nebraska, William and Wilson [twins], in Iowa, John Wesley, Charles Sumner, in Nebraska and Mrs. Perry Munns. Mrs. Jones was highly esteemed by all who knew her, which was also demonstrated at her funeral, which took place Sunday June 4, at 10 o'clock a.m. in the newly erected church near her home, of which she was a member [Evangelical church]. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. W. Shoenfeld. Text. - Phillippians 1:21.
JAMES KOENIG
James Koenig, 17, of Blue Creek, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999. He was born Aug 13, 1982, in Cincinnati, the son of Judith Koenig. Survivors include his mother, three brothers, Michael Koenig and Daniel Koenig, both of Blue Creek, and Jason Koenig of Wamsley; his grandmother, Marion Krick of Blue Ash, one niece and two nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 20, at the Lafferty Funeral Home in West Union, with the Rev. Phil Zaayer officiating. Burial followed in the Moore's Chapel Cemetery in Blue Creek. Visitation was held Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Lafferty Funeral Home.
KATHERINE KIRK
Katherine G. Kirk, 72, of Denver Colo., formerly of West Union, died Thursday, Sep. 26, 2002, at Denver Health and Hospital. She was born in Wilmington on Sept. 23, 1930, the daughter of the late Harold Newman and Lilly (Yazzell) Newman-Blevins. She was a former cook. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Kirk of Englewood, Colo.; two daughters, Debbie Kirk of Commerce City, Colo., and Linda Kirk of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Charles Newman of Shalimar, Fla.; four half-brothers, Fred Blevins of Blue Creek, William Blevins of Morris Hill, Ind., Phillip Newman of West Alexandreia, Ind., and Jerry Little of London; one sister, Dorothy Gerdes of Aurora, Ind.; two half-sisters, Pam Snyder of Eaton and Wanda Bowman of Trotwood; eight granchildren and one great-grandchild. Graveside services were held Thursday, Oct. 3, at Vaughn Ridge Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Lafferty Funeral Home in West Union.
HAZEL KNAUFF
Hazel Inez Conrad Knauff was born in Lynx, Ohio on March 24, 1907, the daughter of John and Bertha Hayslip Conrad. One of five children, she departed this life on January 26, 2002, at the Adams County Manor, at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 2 days. She was married to Maxie Berlin Knauff on March 4, 1924. Unto this union were born five children. Two daughters, Clarice and Brenda Knauff of Stout, Ohio, survive her; also one son, Lester Knauff fo Puntagorda, Floria; one sister, Margaret Southerland of Dayton, Ohio; and one brother, Pete Conrad of Cincinnati, Ohio. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Maxie Knauff on September 10, 1964; one daughter, Agnes Louise Knauff Koenig on October 26, 1964; one son, Leroy Knauff on September 15, 1996; also preceding her in death were two brothers, Lester and Chauncy Conrad. Hazel was born and raised on a farm. She continued that lifestyle throughout her marriage. She loved the outdoors and the simple and quiet life it offered. She will be sadly missed by the family. She will also be missed by the many friends and neighbors she had come in contact with.
WALTER G. KNAUFF
Walter G. "Shorty" Knauff was honored on Monday, May 12, 2003, at the West Union Presbyterian Church. Shorty passed away on May 9, 2003, at the Adams County Hospital in West Union, at the age of 69. Born and raised in Adams County and a graduate of West Union High School, he had earned a doctorate degree from Miami University and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. A retired educator with 38 years of service to the children of our county, as well as others. Mr. Knauff was respected throughtout the community as a leader, teacher, hero and friend. Active in nearly every aspect of the community, Mr. Knauff participated in the West Union American Legion, Young-Moore Post 100, the West Union High School Alumni Board, Lions Club, and the Adams County Republican Club. In addition, he served on the Selective Service board for 20 years, was a member and elder of the West Union Presbyterian Church and a member of the Adams County Honor Guard. If there was an event in need of rallying, "Shorty" was the man for the job. He will always be remember as a orator of the highest regard, speaking at innumerable functions, gatherings, and celebrations. He and his wife, Marilyn (Shell) Knauff, raised a family of five daughters: Michelle, Kathy, Kristina, Patricia, and Julie. In his own children and granchildren, as well as the thousands of children he educated, and those whose lives he touched in between, Mr. Knauff instilled an unquenchable thirst for living and learning. In the wise words of Walter G. "Shorty" Knauff, "There are no real answers...only a quest for the answers...and it is in this quest that learning takes place." He will be remembered as a man from whom to learn - proud of his country, community, family and faith.
DOROTHY LEWIS
Mrs. Dorothy Mae Lewis, 83, of Star Route, Stout, was pronounced dead on arrival Thursday morning at Mercy Hospital. She was a native of Adams County. Surviving are her husband, Everett Lewis; two sons, James and Jonas Cooper of Stout; four daughters, Ruth Hakala and Irene Schalk, both of Wakala, Ill., Zetta Young of West Portsmouth and Betty Caldwell of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral service is to be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with the Rev. Ogra Creech officiating. Burial is to be in McKendree Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight and any time Saturday.
