Mrs. JH McCANN
The wife of J. H. McCann of Louden died Sunday, at 2 p.m. The Dr. and his wife had been residents of the county only six months, and they had been married little more than a year. The deceased leaves an infant, 2 weeks old, the birth of which was the primary cause of her death.

RAYMOND McCANN
Raymond Lee McCann, 72, of West Union, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth. He was born near Trinity, Ky, on Dec 22 1928, son to the late Van and Stella (Deatley) McCann. He was the retired owner and operator of the former West Union Hardware for 41 years and assisted with Corner Crafts-Living Water of West Union for 5 1/2 years. He was a charter member of the West Union Church of Christ, a member of the West Union American Legion Young-Moore Post 100, and the Jerusalem Grange No. 2089 in Liberty Township. He was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Rose McCann of West Union, one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa McCann of West Union; one granddaughter and husband, one grandson, and one great-grandson; one aunt, Beulah King of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 26, at the Lafferty Funeral Home in West Union with James Newman and Dave Olender officiating. Visitation was held on Friday, May 25, at the funeral home. Burial took place in the Kirker Cemetery near Bentonville with military graveside services performed by the Marine Corps Honor Guard and the Adams County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the donor's choice.
OPAL McCARTY
Opal Swisshelm McCarty, 96, of Peebles, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at a Hillsboro nursing home. She was born Nov. 10, 1903, in May Hill, a daughter of the late Jim and Rosa Messinger Swisshelm. She was a member of the Peebles United Methodist Church, Peebles Chapter Order of Eastern Star, and had operated the Adams County Children's Home. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph McCarty on March 22, 1968, and three brothers. She is survived by two sons, Lowell McCarty of Hillsboro, and Ronald McCarty of Peebles; a daughter, Carolyn Goodman of West Union; two sisters, Wahnita Garnant of Illinois, and Bernice Scott of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace Thompson Funeral Home in Peebles, with the Rev. Phil Upole officiating, and interment in Locust Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MARY McCATHERINE
Mary Ann "Leslie" McCatherine died March 1, 2001, in a car accident on State Route 31. Mary was 16 years old, and attended Lancaster High School as a Junior. She is a former resident of Peebles, Ohio. She is survived by her mother, Debbie Lynn Carson McCatherine Ward, and her father, James Allen McCatherine, a grandmother, Charlene Carson, a sister, Jennifer McCatherine, and a younger brother, Nicholas James McCatherine. Those who knew Mary knew her well. Mary was a very nice and energetic person who could always bring a smile to your face. No matter where you are, Mary, you will be in all our hearts; you have touch us all in a way that is unimaginable.

JOAN McCOY
McCOY, Joan W. age 73, of Miamisburg, OH, passed away at 6:20 pm on Nov 23, 2003, at the Hospice of Dayton. Mrs. McCoy was born on March 1, 1930, in Portsmouth, OH, the daughter of John E. Wittenmyer, a prominent attorney in West Union, OH, and Kathleen Wittenmyer, a former schoolteacher. Joan lived in West Union until the age of 13, when her family moved to the Wittenmyer ancestral farm just outside Peebles, OH. She attended Peebles Middle School until the 9th grade, when she moved to Columbus, OH, where she attended North High School until her graduation in 1948; Joan enrolled at Wooster College in the Fall of 1948 and graduated with honors in 1952 with a degree in Art History. Mrs. McCoy was employed by the Ceramic enter in Cincinnati as an instructor in Ceramic Art. After a 3-month tour of European art sites in late 1954, she returned home to Ohio and married her Mid-School sweetheart, James L. McCoy, an Air Force officer who had just returned home from Korea and Japan. After her marriage on June 19, 1955, the couple lived in Peebles, OH, for a year, before moving to Dayton in 1956. Mrs. McCoy was hired by the Dayton Art Institute as First Docent, in charge of creating tour information for the museum's exhibits, as well as training and supervising the volunteer guides. During this time she attended the University of Dayton, earning a teaching degree, and Wright State University, earning a Masters in Fine Arts degree. In 1962, Mrs. McCoy started a teaching career at Wayne High School, as a high school art teacher until her retirement in 1992. Mrs. McCoy was an accomplished artist throughout her career as a teacher, as well as in her retirement years, creating award-winning art in watercolors, oils and acrylics, in addition to ceramics, jewelry, and weaving. Also during her retirement years she and her husband pursued an active post-career buying and selling antiques and art objects in numerous outlets in the area. Mrs. McCoy was preceded in death by her father and mother, her father-in-law, Floyd E. McCoy, her mother-in-law, Clara Mae McCoy, and her brother, James Wittenmyer, a prominent architect in Portsmouth, OH. Survivors include her husband and best friend of 48 years, James L. McCoy, her sister-in-law, Luella Wittenmyer of Portsmouth, her sister-in-law Kathryn McCoy of Nelsonville, OH, and nephews John and James Wittenmyer, niece Suzanne Shaffer, and grandnieces Annamary Shaffer and Emily Wittenmyer and grand-nephew Caleb Wittenmyer. Also surviving are two wonderful friends and fellow art teachers, Sharon Dunaway and Shirley Harbaugh. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 8:00 pm, Friday, Nov 28 at the Tobias Funeral Home, 5471 Far Hills Avenue. The funeral will take place Saturday, Nov 29 at 10:00 am at the Fairmont Presbyterian Church at 3705 Far Hills Avenue, with Reverend Robert Wade and Reverend Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will take place at the Locust Grove Cemetery near Peebles, OH, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm, with Reverend Robert Edwards officiating.

ANDY McFARLAND
Andy McFarland, 68, of Peebles, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the Adams County Hospital in West Union. He was born in Peebles on Aug 12, 1933, the son of the late Ernest J. and Rhoda Grace (Taylor) McFarland. He attended the Peebles Church of God. He retired after 32 years from Fifth Third Bank in Peebles where he was branch manager and vice president. He was a member of the Adams County Honor Guard. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Doris (Bennington) McFarland of Peebles, whom he married Mar 21, 1953; one son, Gary McFarland and Pam Cameron; three brothers, James McFarland of West Union, Burton McFarland of Peebles, and Ernest McFarland of Manchester; three sisters, Thelma Neill of Scottsdale, Wilma Johnson and Ann Rudd, both of Peebles; two grandsons; and friend Sara Turner. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vohn McFarland and Harry McFarland. Services were held Saturday, April 13 at the Peebles Church of God with Ron Stephens and Dave Hopkins officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Adams County Honor Guard. EVELYN McFARLAND
Evelyn McFarland, of Springboro, formerly of West Union, died Friday, October 21. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorain McFarland, in 1986. Survivors include two sons, Richard of Springboro and Harold of Denver, Colorado; one daughter, Norma Spencer of Hamilton; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Culbertson of Dayton; and a nephew, Marion Barnes of Hillsboro. Services were held Monday, October 24, at the Springboro Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Springboro Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Middletown Hospice.
