JOHN MORRISON

Death of John Morrison - The Pioneer Merchant Peacefully Passes Away -- Every one who has known the venerable John Morrison of Eckmansville, will drop a tear when they hear of his death. This sad event occured at his home last Friday morning. He was one of the pioneer merchants of the county and the only one that was engaged in active business up to the time of his death. He established the store in Eckmansville in the year 1834, and by his square dealing built up a large and profitable business. Few men were more successful in the merchant business than was Mr. Morrison. He was 86 years of age. He died of blood poisoning after a few days illness. He was a grand old philanthropist, whose charitable acts and kind words were always ready for those who were in distress.

WILLIAM NICODEMUS

With all suffering over and with a peaceful expression upon his face, William Nicodemus lies today in the throes of that last stillness which holds alike forever both the young and the old upon whom it creeps. He was born in Manchester, Ohio Jan 25, 1855. He was the fourth in a family of nine children. Surviving him are two brothers, Robert of Stockdale and Frank of Springfield; several nieces and nephews; one, Jacob Kuntz, who with his wife, most kindly shared the comfort of their home and administered to him during his incapacitation. He chose for his companion Miss Mary Barbara Hines of Beaver Ohio, a most sympathetic affable and beautiful help mate and on the 8th day of July in 1880 they pledged their betrothal. However this blissful association was severed in 1925 when Mrs. Nicodemus joined that "innumerable caravan". William Nicodemus filled a very important place in the political and social life of the community. He had the highest conception of the privilege as director of the infirmary; as county commissioner, and his obligation as a citizen. He was an honored member of the Fraternal Order of the Red Men and his example is worthy of imitation by the brothers of this secret society. We consider it a sweet and hallowed privilege to call a halt to the busy march of life in order that we may drop a tear of tender love and sacred memory upon the bier of one who has gone down the fierce battle of earthly existence and has passed beyond the mountains and the setting of the sun. [NB: Excerpts from original lengthy obituary. Buried Beaver Union Cemetery, Beaver OH]
