Michael "Mick" Barr
MASON — Michael "Mick" Barr, the first high school All-American from Mason, died Saturday at his home. He was 57.

Barr was known for being an exceptional student and athlete. He lettered in four sports at Mason High School. In football, he set the record for receptions at Mason and was named a Parade All-American at wide receiver for the 1967 season. He was also inducted into the Mason Athletic Hall of Fame, as was his father, Joe Barr.

"He was the most accomplished individual at everything he did," said Bruce Crutcher, Barr's quarterback at Mason and life-long friend. "He was a leader and captain at everything."

After high school, Barr entered the U.S. Naval Academy and became the seventh-leading career receiver in Navy football history.

Crutcher recalled Barr playing three sports at Navy his freshman year, including making the lacrosse team without a day of experience — simply to avoid hazing from upperclassmen.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Barr served five years with the U.S. Marine Corps at bases around the world. He retired with the rank of captain in 1977 and returned to Mason. He worked for Procter & Gamble for the past 30 years in international business.

Friend Russ Hutchins remembered Barr as a "common guy who was at the top of the class for being a good man."

Barr is survived by his wife of 35 years, Connie; two sons, Chris of Anderson Twp., and Casey and his wife, Libby, of Liberty Twp.; a granddaughter, Joey Elise Barr, and also a grandson who is due this month; and brother, Tom, and his wife, Krista, of Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ruth Barr, and brother John Barr.

Ken Sturgill
HAMILTON — Ken Sturgill, a former teacher and coach for Hamilton City Schools and part-time employee of the Cincinnati Bengals, died of a heart attack on Saturday. He was 55.

Mr. Sturgill taught science at Wilson Junior High School for 18 years, retiring in 2006. He coached boys baseball and girls volleyball at Wilson, and coached the girls golf team at Hamilton High School.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Sturgill served on the Bengals' game-day support staff in the press box at Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field and Paul Brown Stadium since 1988, handling the transmission of game information to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"Ken was a very friendly, always-eager-to-help guy," said Jack Brennan, Bengals public relations director. "He would man the phones and help with any late emergencies after games. He's just the kind of person you want in that position."

Mr. Sturgill is survived by his wife, Susan, and sons Ken, Ben and Andrew. Ben is playing professional baseball in Europe after an outstanding career at the University of New Hampshire.

Funeral services are Friday at 4 p.m. at West Side Baptist Church, 154 Gordon Ave., Hamilton. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 NW Washington Blvd., Hamilton.

Stewart "Stew" Jones
HAMILTON — The man behind the punctuation mark that brought international attention to Hamilton preferred to keep a low profile.

Stewart "Stew" Jones had the idea to promote Hamilton by adding an exclamation point to the city's name in the mid-1980s. While Jones' gimmick gave the city national and international attention, the same could not be said for Jones, who died Wednesday, Dec. 3, at The Fort Hamilton Hospital at age 89.

"He never took credit for things. It wasn't generally known until several years later," said Jim Blount, historian and former JournalNews editor.

Butler County Commissioner Gregory Jolivette said Jones' idea was inspired by "Oklahoma!," the musical. Jolivette, then-mayor of Hamilton, said people often mistakenly think the punctuation idea was his.

But Jones didn't go unnoticed by all: He was named among 50 "Amazing Americans" by Newsweek magazine, which stated: "Since Hamilton's founding in 1791, its illustrious daughters and sons have ranged from Fannie Hurst to Ray Combs. None has done more to gain his hometown celebrity than Stewart Jones."

"There was no better communicator than Stew ... verbally, in writing and how to say it," said Jim Mayer, director of Berkeley Square retirement community, where Jones lived. "That was his whole life, not what you said, but how you say it. Not Hamilton, but Hamilton!"

While there was no strong opposition before the name change, it drew a mixed reception in the community. But it did have the newspaper's backing, Blount said.

"We knew it was a gimmick, but it worked," he said, demonstrated by his travels to Italy more than 10 years after the exclamation point was added to Hamilton. "It was the first thing they mentioned. They thought it clever. ... Obviously, it had staying power."

Hamilton is believed to be the only U.S. city to legally adopt an exclamation point. However, it was not accepted by mapmakers.

Visitation for Jones is noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 NW Washington Blvd., Hamilton, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.
