JACOBENE STECK
Mrs. Jacobene Jenner Steck, was born in Wittenburg, Germany, Jan. 5, 1837 and departed this life February 14th, 1913, age 76 years. Very early in life she left the place of her birth, and emigrated to this country with her parents in 1852. They located on a farm near Fairview, Adams County, Ohio. She united in marriage to Mr David Steck March 21, 1808 [sic] and to them were born eight children: four girls and four boys. Her husband and two children preceded her in death: the husband died in 1892, one child in 1902, and one in infancy. She left with her family for the West about nine years ago and located in Wichita, Kansas, where she lived among her children to the time of her death. Early in life she united with the German M.E. church at Fairview, Ohio, and was a very faithful member of that church up to the time of her leaving for the West. She was a splendid woman, a good neighbor and a most affectionate mother. She lived a secluded life; giving herself up to the sphere which heaven had assigned her - her home, and there she was the angel of the home: loved, honored, and obeyed. Her departure was like her life, quiet and without noise. She passed to her reward like a flower at sunset, without pain and without struggle - but she left a fragrance behind her. All who knew her loved her and she leaves to mourn their loss one brother, Alex Jenner of Indianola, Iowa; and six children, Jacob, John, and Fred Steck of Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. Mary Smith of Marservery, Iowa; Mrs. John Sheeley and Mrs. Anna Clark of near West Union; twenty-four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The remains were conveyed to Winchester where they were taken in charge by Mr. O. C. Robuck and conveyed to West Union where the funeral services were held at the M. E. church conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. W. Matheson. Interment in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
