Donald Wood Gillmore, was chemist, researcher
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Donald Wood Gillmore, 82, of Morgantown, W.Va., formerly of Lorain, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born June 24, 1919, in Lorain and was a direct descendant of the first settlers of Lorain. Gillmore was a 1937 graduate of Lorain High School; a graduate of Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., with a bachelor's degree in chemistry; and received a doctorate degree in fuel technology from Penn State University in 1954. He started his career in 1941 as a research assistant for the National Lead Co., Sayresville, N.J., moving on to various companies as a research chemist. In 1953, Gillmore joined the staff of Penn State University in the department of fuel technology as a fellow, research associate and assistant. From 1953 to 1960 he was a research supervisor at the Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical Co., Activated Carbon Division, Neville Island, Pa. From 1960 to 1970, He was employed with the Carborundum Company, Electro Mineral Division, at the Niagara Falls, N.Y., plant, serving as plant manager. In 1970, he moved to Morgantown, where he was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in supervisory positions, until his retirement in 1985 from the Department of Energy. Gillmore published more than two dozen papers on low-Btu gasification, reclamation of coal wastes, fly ash utilization, extrusion, coal cleaning, anthracite properties, carbonized briquets, activated carbon, abrasives and refractories. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 411, serving as past exalted ruler, district deputy of the Grand Lodge in 1990, and as secretary for the past 10 years.
