Janice R. Thibo
(October 3, 1927 - July 27, 2011)
Janice R. Thibo (nee: Paine), 83 years of age, and a resident of Oberlin, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at the New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a sudden illness.

She was born October 3, 1927, in Lakewood Ohio where she was raised and graduated from Lakewood High School. In 1954, Janice moved to Avon before moving to Oberlin in 1971. Janice and her late husband, James lived in the "little red brick house" in Oberlin that was designed by Janice and built by James, their son, Gary, and their many friends.

Janice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who cherished the time that she spent with her family. She was a member of the Oberlin Forum, Sorosis, Oberlin Senior Center and Advisory Board, the Oberlin Heritage Center, and was involved with the Friends of the Oberlin Library. Janice was also a member of Oberlin Christ Episcopal Church.

Janice leaves to treasure her memory her son and his wife Gary and Joyce Thibo of Elyria; her daughter Carol Jean Thibo-Holcomb of Cleveland; her granddaughter Shelly (Dale) Golak; and her great grandchildren Jordan, Kendra, and Bailey. She is also survived by her brother and his wife W.W. "Wally" and Gerry Paine of Avon Lake, and nieces and nephews; Connie and Scott Field, Curtis and Patty Paine, Marlo and Roy Troughton, and their children Caroline, Thomas, Susanne; and sister-in-law Sara Paine.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years James R. Thibo in 1986; by her parents William Hahn Paine in 1982, and Izora Paine (nee: Gast) in 1988; by her sister Jean Marie Paine in 1927; and by her son-in-law Bud Holcomb on March 4, 2011, as well as by her brother James in 2000.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Janice's life will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church; 162 South Main St., Oberlin. The Rev. Fr. Brian K. Wilbert, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held privately by the family in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to; Christ Episcopal Church Hot Meals; 162 South Main St., Oberlin, Oh 44074 or Oberlin Senior Center.

Maud Elizabeth Surrarrer
(March 12, 1923 - July 29, 2011)
Maud Elizabeth Surrarrer (nee: Talbot), 88 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, July 29, 2011, at Elms Retirement Center in Wellington following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 12, 1923, in Cleveland. Maud had been a lifetime resident of Amherst and graduated from Brownhelm High School. She continued her education at the Oberlin School of Business and received her teaching degree at Kent State.

Maud was employed as an elementary school teacher with the Firelands School District for many years. She was a member of Henrietta United Methodist Church. Maud was a member of the Ohio State Teachers Retirement Organization. Her hobbies included traveling, reading and watching travelogues on TV. Maud loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and her two cats "Trouble and Callie".

Survivors include her daughters Sharon Surrarrer of Arvada, Colorado, Gail Johns and her husband Rex of Wakeman, Linda Anderson and her husband Dennis of Norwalk, Marcia Abercrombie and her husband Gary of Cary, North Carolina; her niece Barbara MacNeil of Elyria eleven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years Merle Surrarrer on August 21, 2008; her stillborn son Robert Lee Surrarrer in 1947; her sister Dora Morris; and by her parents George E. and Bertha Talbot (nee: Swinehart).

Friends may call Monday, August 1, 2011, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Armando Arellano, pastor of Henrietta United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to American Diabetes. Association; 4500 Rockside Road, Suite 440, Independence, OH 44131.

Thompson Correthers
(April 22, 1931 - August 5, 2011)
U.S. Veteran
Thompson Correthers, 80 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 5, 2011 at the Specialty Hospital of Lorain in Amherst.

He was born April 22, 1931 in Canton, Mississippi, the oldest child of Autry Correthers and Alberta Thompson Correthers. Tom loved his parents deeply especially his mother, he made sure she was taken care of, visiting her every two weeks, until the time of her death. Tom attributed all the success he enjoyed in life directly to the lessons he learned from Godly grandparents. Tom grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Northeastern High School in the class of 1951. Tom has made his home in Amherst for over thirty years.

Tom was drafted in the United States Army and served during the Korea Conflict and afterward he enlisted in the Air Force and served during Vietnam, retiring after twenty years as a Technician Sergeant. He was employed at Alltel Communication for twenty years before retiring in 1991 as a technician trainer. Tom also worked for the Ohio Lottery Commission. Tom was a member of Church of the Open Door. He loved his church Sunday school and the retreats to the Amish Country. His favorite verse "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15. He enjoyed cycling, water sports, and traveling with his family on vacations and family reunions. Tom was an avid sports fan who enjoyed Michigan football. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his dear wife of forty-eight years Ollie Correthers (nee: Harris); his sons Craig Correthers of Amherst, Thomas G. Correthers and his wife Mary of Rock Island, Illinois, Kyle Gans and his wife Regina of Laurel, Maryland; his daughter Carol Correthers of Oberlin; his grandchildren Sharee, Candice, Matthew, Eric, Melanie, Danielle, Kara and Adesina Odiduro; his sister in law Betty Correthers of Detroit, Michigan; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his brother Ceasar Correthers; his sister Pauline Hearns and by his parents Autry and Alberta Correthers (nee: Thompson).

The family is thankful for the amazing care he received from the staff and doctors at the Specialty Hospital of Lorain.

Friends may call Friday, August 12, 2011 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Open Door; 43275 Telegraph Road, Elyria, OH 44035. The Rev. Bill Williams, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.

William J. Kelley
(July 9, 1925 - August 7, 2011)
U.S. Veteran
William J. Kelley, 86 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away August 7, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain following a short illness.

He was born July 9, 1925 in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he was raised. Amherst has been his home for the last fifty-two years.

William was proud to serve his country with the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Medusa. He graduated from Boston University and used his education serving as Chief of Physical Therapy at Fairview General Hospital for thirty years. He was instrumental in establishing the Physical Therapy Training Program at Cleveland State University and was a member of the Cleveland Physical Therapy Association. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, he also enjoyed golfing, reading and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Kathleen Kelley (nee: Ryan); his sons and their wives Brian and Alice Kelley of Westerville, Ohio, Brendan and Sally Kelley of Elyria, and Kevin and Linda Kelley of Avon; his daughter and her husband Karen and Michael Joris of Sheffield Village; nine grandchildren; and his sister Eileen Dahill and her husband Charles of Maine, and Helen Tierney of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Margaret "Meg" Bommer; and by his parents Edward and Flora Kelley (nee: Beaulieu).

Friends may call Thursday, August 11, 2011 from 9 - 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Judes Children Hospital Research; PO Box 2151, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101-2151.

Pauline "Lee" T. Olexen
(February 28, 1918 - August 9, 2011)
Pauline "Lee" T. Olexen (nee: Matsic), 93 years of age, and a lifetime resident of Lorain, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst following a lengthily illness.

She was born February 28, 1918, in Lorain where she had made her home.

Pauline was a loving housewife and mother. She was a member of the Croation Club in Lorain. Pauline loved gardening, especially roses. She loved spending her time cooking and baking for her sons and their companions.

Survivors include her sons and their companions Lester Olexen (Pam) of Vermilion, Gus Olexen (Pam) of Elyria Township and her grandson Michael Thomas; her sisters Kathryn Stolla of Lorain, Barbara Matsic of Texas and Dorothy Rich of South Amherst.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years Michael Olexen on December 8, 1993; one brother and five sisters; and by her parents Gasper and Dora Matsic.

Friends may call Thursday, August 11, 2011, from 11:00 until 1:00 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Graveside Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon. The Rev. Fr. John C.Retar, pastor of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Parish in Lorain, will officate.

Carolyn Leadingham
(December 18, 1949 - August 11, 2011)
Carolyn Leadingham (nee: Sparks), 61 years of age, and a resident of Wakeman, Ohio was called home by her precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, early Thursday morning, August 11, 2011 surrounded by her family and friends at Cleveland Clinic.

She was born December 18, 1949 in Morehead, Kentucky. She was raised and lived in Lorain for many years graduating from Admiral King High School with the class of 1968 and Lorain County Community College. Wakeman has been her home for twenty-one years.

Carolyn was employed with the former City Bank in Lorain for seventeen years during which time she met and married her best friend and husband, Larry. After raising her children, she was employed by the James Ross Nationwide Insurance Co. in Oberlin for ten years, where she received her insurance agent license. During earlier church memberships at Euclid Baptist Church in Lorain and Faith Baptist Church in Amherst as well as at Camden Baptist Church in Camden, Carolyn loved to use her vocal talent in worship to God. An active member of Camden Baptist Church, she served as Sunday School Teacher, Awana worker, and helped plan and cook for various meals and events for her church family. Carolyn loved to cook and bake sharing her goodies with her friends and family. Of all the joys in Carolyn's life, her most treasured role was that of being a loving wife and mother even getting up early to "prepare Larry's lunch and send him off to work" and making sure Scott and Jennifer were also ready for the day. Carolyn and Larry shared the "good times" of parenting together to raise their children to be responsible adults who loved the Lord. Carolyn was known by the children of her "extended family" as "Car-Car" and will be greatly missed by all that loved her.

Carolyn leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband Larry Leadingham; her caring children and their spouses Scott and Tabitha Leadingham of Lorain, Jennifer and Kevin Cook of Olmsted Falls; and her mother Dell Sparks (nee: Hall) of Wakeman. She is also survived by her brother Gary Lee Sparks of Malvern, Arkansas; many aunts and uncles; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Willie "Bill" Sparks in 1995; and her sisters Brenda Sue Sparks in infancy and Barbara "Barb" Hall in 2005.

Friends may call Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Camden Baptist Church; 17901 State Route 511, Camden Township where funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Pastors Lawrence Nocella and Pastor Bill Kopas, of Camden Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Wakeman Cemetery, Wakeman.

Leonard Richard Alessio
(October 19, 1937 - August 11, 2011)
U.S. Veteran
Leonard Richard Alessio, 73 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011, at Lakewood Hospital following a sudden illness.

He was born October 19, 1937, in New Eagle, Pennsylvania. As a young boy, Leonard moved to Lorain. He had lived in San Diego, California for two years then resided in Houston Texas for two years before moving back to Lorain where he had made his home since 1946.

Leonard served in the United States Army and was a member of the National Guard. He served with the Lorain County Sheriff Auxiliary, serving under Sheriff Smith. Leonard was a 32nd. Degree Mason and a member of the Wellington Masonic Lodge #127. He supported his wife with his knowledge of upholstering furniture and interior design at her Showcase Interior Decorating Company. Leonard loved music, and enjoyed playing the banjo and the guitar. His hobbies included caining furniture, golf, bowling and loved being industries and working with his hands. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren's events.

Survivors include his loving wife of forty-three years Caryl Elaine Alessio (nee: Krieg); his sons and their wives Kevin and Casey Alessio of Vermilion, Gregory and Melissa Alessio of Grafton; his daughters Kim Smith and her husband Dan of Amherst; Randi Robey of Lorain; his grandchildren Dominic and Angela Alessio, Danny and Cortney Smith; his brother and his wife Ernie and Kathy Alessio of Avon.

He was preceded in death by his son in law Jeff Robey; and his parents Ernest and Julia Alessio (nee: Pontier).

Friends may call Sunday, August 14, 2011, from 4 - 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 15, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. N. James Greenawalt, will officiate. Burial will be held privately by the family at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. military honor will be performed by the Amherst Veterans military Honor Guard.
