John J. Gargus
UPPER ARLINGTON — John J. Gargus, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on June 14, 2009, after a long battle with cancer, with his family by his side.

He was born on June 1, 1915 to the late Andrew and Susanna Gargus in Daisytown, Pennsylvania. He moved to Lorain, Ohio when he was eight years old, and within hours, fell in love with the eight-year old Emma Gargus, whom he married in 1937 and to whom he remained happily married for 72 years. John graduated from Lorain High School in 1932. Before joining the Navy during World War II, where he served as a Sea Bee photographer in the Pacific Theater, he worked in the shipping department of the National Tube Company in Lorain, Ohio. After the War, he established the Gargus Studio in Lorain, and worked there with his wife by his side for 28 years. As a photographer, he was one of the first adapters color photography in Ohio, and a frequent prizewinner at the Professional Photographers of Ohio annual convention. He was a member of Rotary International, the Cleveland Society of Professional Photographers, and on various occasions, he served as president of both. He was also a member of the Professional Photographers of Ohio and Professional Photographers of America, where he earned the distinction, Master of Photography. In 1977, Mr. Gargus retired and moved to Sun City, Arizona, where he and his wife lived for 29 years. During this time, they traveled extensively and enjoyed swimming, hiking, golfing, gardening, citrus trees, the sunshine, and spending time with their children and grandchildren. In the 1930s, John was a champion swimmer and the frequent winner of a Lorain three-mile race in Lake Erie; as an octogenarian, he swam three-quarters of a mile every day. In 2002 John and Emma moved to Upper Arlington, Ohio to live with their daughter, Jackie and granddaughter, Emma.

John is survived by his wife of 72 years, Emma; his son, Dr. John Jay Gargus (wife Ellen Dellis) of Irvine, CA; daughter, Prof. Jacqueline Gargus of Upper Arlington, OH; grandsons Andrew Gargus (Chicago and New York City) and Matthew (Irvine, CA); and granddaughter Emma Gargus (Upper Arlington), and many relatives and friends.

John was predeceased by sister Susan, who died in the influenza epidemic of 1918, and by sisters Ann Smith and Mary Gluhank of Lorain, OH and brother Andrew Gargus, of Elyria, OH.

There will not be any calling hours and a private, immediate-family-only service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in John's name to Christ Lutheran Church, 3323 Pearl Ave, Lorain, Ohio 44055.

The family wants to publicly acknowledge the loving care that was provided to John by the staff at Mount Carmel Hospice during his fight with cancer.

Arrangements will be made by the Rodman Funeral Service and the Ohio Cremation and Memorial Society.

Norbert Silva
LORAIN — Norbert Silva, age 46, of Lorain, died on Sunday, August 2, 2009.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 6, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, at the House of Praise International Church, 4321 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be held on Friday, at 11:00 am. Further arrangements are incomplete and will be announced tomorrow.

The Dovin funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, is handling arrangements.

Robert Joseph Hudak
AMHERST — Robert Joseph Hudak, 79 of Amherst, Ohio died Saturday, August 1, 2009 in his home. Friends will be received on Thursday, August 6, 2009 from 2 P. M. until 4 P. M. and from 7 P. M. until 9 P. M. at the Walter A. Frey Funeral Home, 700 West Erie Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Further arrangements will be announced by the home on Wednesday.

Geri Lynn Williams Pishner
SHEFFIELD LAKE — Geri Lynn Williams Pishner, 42 of Sheffield Lake, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009 at St. John West Shore Hospital, Westlake, from natural causes.

Born Oct. 25, 1966 in Elyria, she lived in Lorain most of her life until moving to Sheffield Lake recently.

Geri attended Lorain High School and Ohio Institute of Health Careers where she was studying to become a medical assistant/phlebotomist.

Geri enjoyed fishing, camping, drag racing, spending time with family and friends, taking care of her children and grandchildren, and karaoke singing.

She is survived by her mother, Leona Reynolds; brother, John Williams Jr.; daughters Kassondra and Kayla all of Lorain; step children, Michael Howard and Kristy Howard both of Lorain; her fiance, Jeff Pishner of Avon Lake, and his children, Beth Brabson, Larry Brabson of Lorain and Debra Pishner all of Lorain; two grandchildren; step mother, Sherrell Williams of Hohenwold, TN; step sister, Rhonda Boggs of Elyria and several other step brothers and step sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, John William Sr.; step father, Charles Reynolds; and a brother, Randy Williams.

Geri Lynn was a wonderful mother and grandmother; she will be missed but never forgotten.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 am. Elder Larry Newsome, pastor of Pleasantview Old Regular Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.

Aida Maria Washington
OLMSTED FALLS — Aida Maria Washington, 51, of Oberlin, died Monday, July 13, 2009 at The Renaissance in Olmsted Falls.

She was born July 16, 1957 in Bronx, New York, where she resided for twenty-eight years and also lived in Lorain and Elyria before moving to Oberlin. She graduated from Lorain County Community College as a surgical technician. She was president of Minority Electric Company and owner of Club Our Space in Lorain. She was a member of the National Association of Women in Construction, National Association of Electrical Contractors and The Elyria Country Club. Her hobbies included belly dancing, traveling and interior decorating.

Aida is survived by her husband Howard S. Washington, Jr.; son Jason Martes of Lorain; stepsons Andre Washington of Elyria, Richard Washington of Oberlin and Marcus Washington of Lorain; four grandchildren; mother Aida Beltran of Tampa, Florida; sisters Judith and Maria Olmeda of Lorain and brother Frank Olmeda of Long Island, New York and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday 6 to 9 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A funeral service will be Saturday 11:00 a.m. at Faith Ministries Christian Center, 1306 Euclid Ave., Lorain, OH. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.

Cedric Demetrius Anderson Sr.
LORAIN — Cedric "Poochie" Demetrius Anderson, Sr., 39, of Lorain, passed away unexpectedly on July 7, 2009 at Community Health Partners in Lorain.

He was born September 25, 1969 in Lorain and had been a lifelong resident of Lorain County. He was a graduate of Southview High School and was employed as a construction worker. Cedric attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Elyria. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed his family.

He will be sadly missed by his sons, Joshua Brinson, Noel Anderson and Cedric Anderson, Jr., all of Lorain; his daughter, Aaliyah Anderson of Lorain; his mother, Annette Anderson of Elyria; his father, Wesley Noble Sr. of Oberlin; adopted father, John Anderson of Lorain; a sister, Ganaya Noble of Lorain; 3 brothers, Tyrone Jeter and Wesley Noble Jr., both of Washington, DC, and Terrence William Noble of Lorain; his maternal grandmother, Johnna Mae Stafford of Lorain and grandmother, Rose Sampson of Elyria; godmother, Irene Lumpkin of Lorain; god brothers, David, Trent, Byron, and Nate Alls, all of Lorain; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Cedric was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Marvine Noble-Kimbrough; maternal grandfather, William Mitchell; and adopted paternal grandparents, Clair Anderson and John Anderson, Sr.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway Ave, Lorain, Ohio 44052. The Rev. Donald Brown of Elyria and Rev. Dempsey Noble of Second New Hope Baptist Church of Lorain will co-officiate. Burial will be private.

Thomas A. Bittner
BERLIN TOWNSHIP — Thomas A. Bittner, age 60, of Berlin Township, died at his home on Sunday.

He was born on August 22, 1948 in Norwalk, and has lived in the area his whole life. He was a 1966 graduate of Berlin Heights High School and Tiffin University with a degree in Business. He served in the US Army during the Vietman War. He worked at Huron Ore Docks and also was a Realtor for many years. He also worked for the Lorain County Board of R-DD (Murray Ridge) for over 20 years. He was also a past Berlin Heights Councilman and was currently a Berlin Township Trustee. He served on several county-wide Boards, was a member of the Berlin Heights American Legion, Life Member of the AMVETS, and the Kelley's Island VFW.

He was a member of the Berlin Heights Congregational UCC, Kelley's Island Homeowners Association, Berlin Conservation Club. He was an avid sportsman and sports fan, and was known for taking his Murray Ridge clients out to lunch on their birthdays.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years Sharon (Schropp), two sons 2nd Lt. Bryan Bittner USMC, and Benjamin Bittner, both of Berlin Township, his mother Dorothy Daniels, of Berlin Heights, sisters Dolly (Ron) Fierst, of Westlake, Jane (Rob) Stilgenbauer, of Lorain, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friend Betty Pomeroy.

He was preceded in death by his father Henry Daniels.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 at the Morman-Hinman-Tanner Funeral Home, 38 South Street, Berlin Heights, where services will be held on Thursday at 11:00. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Berlin Heights.

Blake Christiaan LaForce
BUTLER TOWNSHIP — Blake Christiaan LaForce, 18, of Butler Twp., passed away Friday, July 3, 2009 at Cincinnati Children's after a courageous battle fighting leukemia and the consequences of insurmountable complications. A 2009 graduate of Vandalia Butler High School, Blake was an outstanding athlete and an individual who made a positive difference in many people's lives.

He is survived by his loving parents, Mark and Linda LaForce of Butler Twp.; sister & brother-in-law, Lauren & Britt Woods of Vandalia; brother, Johnathan LaForce of Avon Lake; maternal grandparents, George & Jans Bruggeman of Dayton; paternal grandparents, Tom Gilbert & Nancy LaForce Gilbert of Lorain; nephew & niece, Brayden & Madelyn Woods; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Christian Life Center, 3489 Little York Road with Pastor Stan Tharp & Pastor Charlie Carroll officiating. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friend at the church from 4-8 PM Tuesday, July 7, 2009.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society or the Blake LaForce #41 Memorial Fund in care of National City Bank, Vandalia in Blake's memory. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Marker & Heller Funeral Homes, Huber Heights Chapel.

Georgieann Shockey
LORAIN — Georgieann (Viconovic) Shockey departed this life Friday June 26. Her Husband and sons were present throughout the process.

She was born September 9, 1941 to George and Violet Viconovic in Sharon, Pennsylvania. She graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1962 and was married in 1963.

In 1969, she moved to Lorain the result of a transfer by US Steel. That same year, she started work as a staff nurse at St. Joseph Hospital. Very soon, her capabilities were recognized and she moved to Coronary Care — the area she grew to love. In subsequent years she advanced through many responsibilities including managing Critical Care, Shift Supervisor, and Educator. After the 1994 merger with Community Hospital she ran the Staffing Office, allocation nursing resources over all the units. Then she established the Pre Admission Testing program. After that she rose to Manager — Clinical Education.

Her focus on the quality of patient care, acute sense of compassion and fair play and problem solving ability enabled her to advance far beyond normal expectations for a three year Diploma nurse. She was the same type of wife and mother. No one could outperform her. Her family came first at all times. She exercised three days a week at the EMH Fitness Center and developed many friends in the pool there. She belonged to a chapter of Red Hat Ladies, Nurses Purses Investment Club and Retired St. Joseph nurses. These three groups went to lunch often and enjoyed long friendships.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years Garnett of Amherst Township, sons Ed of Hawthorne N.Y., Wayne (Lori) of Hudson, Ohio and Mike (Jessica) of Stow, Ohio, brothers Chris (Nanci) of Hubbard, Ohio, Steve of Phoenix, and George of Durham, North Carolina.Many nieces and nephews are scattered around the country. There are five grandchildren Nathan, Siddhi, Sarah, Marcelo, and Silvana. She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

Friends and family may call at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals 1124 West 5th Street Lorain, Ohio Tuesday from 4-7p.m. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Presbyterian Church at the junction of Route 58 and 2. Reverend James Smucker will preside. A light lunch will be served afterward in the Heritage Hall. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Michael S. Carte Jr.
SHEFFIELD LAKE — Michael S. Carte Jr., 24, died suddenly at home on June 24, 2009.

Mike was born on Jan 6, 1985 at Lorain St. Joes. He was employed as a long distance mover.He attended Brookside H.S. where he excelled in football and baseball. He was named to the Ohio All State high school football team and the United States baseball team which traveled to Australia for competition. He also participated in baseball, weightlifting and snow boarding.

He later attended Eastern Michigan University, Tri-C and LCC.Michael loved people, family, sports, and his animals: Bo and Bennie, his dogs; Baby and Peanut, his cats.

Michael is survived by his mother Melody Carte Martin and step-father James Martin of Sheffield Lake; grandparents; Betty and J.R. Husk of Florida; John (Pop) Wallace of Sheffield Lake Lyle Carte of West Virginia; great grandmother; Doris Jackson of Avon Lake; aunts and uncles; George Pace,Daniel Pace, Michelle Pace, Ray Carte (Diane), Jimmy Carte (Melissa), Janette Carte and many cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father Michael Carte sr.; grandmother Carol Wallace; grandfather; Foster Jackson; and uncle Jeffery Pace. Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Rd., Avon Lake on Saturday, June 27 from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm.

Funeral Services will be at the funeral home on Monday, June 29 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Kelly Brill of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ will officiate. Internment will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
