Died: July 1, 2002
Marianne Matotek (nee Skoda), 54, of Lorain, died Monday July 1, 2002 at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 24, 1948 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident. She was a graduate of Lorain High School and the Northern Institute of Cosmetology in Lorain.

Mrs. Matotek worked as a hairdresser for 34 years and most recently worked at Donita’s Sunsational Styling Systems in Lorain.

She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain. She was past president of the St. Anthony School P.T.U. and helped organize the 200 Club dinner at the church.

She enjoyed bowling, golfing, exercising and her perennial flower garden.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years Tom, daughters: Heather Rogers of Parma Heights and Amy Matotek of Syracuse, New York; grandson Nicholas Rogers of Parma Heights; sister Susan Muska of Amherst and brothers Sam J. Skoda of White Bear Lake, Minnesota and Steve Skoda of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her parents Sam T. Skoda and Theresa “Raz” (nee Kurjan) Skoda.

Rev. James R. Mays
Retired Minister Age 86
Born: July 6, 1916
Died: August 4, 2002
The Rev. James R. Mays, 86, of Lorain, went to be with the Lord Sunday August 4, 2002 at the home of his daughter after suffering a lengthy illness.

He was born July 6, 1916 in Staunton, Virginia; the son of Mr. & Mrs. Norman F. Mays, both deceased.

At the age of 13 he moved to Huntington, West Virginia and started working with his father as a shoe repairman. After finishing high school and attending Kentucky Christian College, he was ordained as a minister on January 2, 1937. He served churches in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia and Florida.

Mr. Mays married his wife of 62 years Mary M. Mays (nee Gibson) on March 24, 1940 and had three children.

They purchased Lewis Brothers Shoe Repair in Huntington, West Virginia in 1957 and received his orthopedic shoe license in 1963, as well as continuing his ministries.

After retiring in 1973, Mr. & Mrs. Mays spent the early years of their retirement in Georgia before moving to Mt. Healthy Christian Home in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1984. Mr. & Mrs. Mays moved to Lorain in November of 2001 to live with their daughter and son-in-law.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary M. Mays (nee Gibson); three children Barbara Madden-Bishop of Cincinnati, David L. Mays of Columbus and Mary A. Shorts of Lorain; three sisters Margaret Canary of San Bernadino, California, Elizabeth Prouty of Dayton and Dorothy Atkinson of Virginia Beach, Virginia; brother Harold Mays of Huntington, West Virginia; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Neal Clayton Johnson
VERMILION — Neal Clayton Johnson, 16, of Vermilion died suddenly May 12, 2009 in Vermilion.

Born in Amherst, Neal was a lifelong Vermilion resident.

He was a Junior at Vermilion High School and enjoyed baseball, Playstation 3, fishing, mushroom hunting, and spending time with his sister, friends and his girlfriend, Caroline Wiley.

He is survived by his mother, Candice Johnson; his father, Gary Johnson, a sister, Eliza Johnson, his paternal grandparents, Sylvia and Doug Johnson; maternal grandparents, Rocelia and Douglas Smith, all of Vermilion.

Friends may visit Monday, May 18, 2009 from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Reverend David Johnson, pastor of the Nazarene Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Neal Johnson Funeral Fund, c/o First Merit Bank, 4530 Liberty Ave., Vermilion, Ohio 44089.

Thomas Joseph Long
AVON — Thomas Joseph Long, 47, of Avon, formerly of Lorain passed away suddenly Thursday, May 28, 2009 at EMH Regional Medical Center . He was born March 14, 1962 in Elyria, was raised in Lorain and had lived in Avon the past 10 years.

Mr. Long was a 1980 graduate of Admiral King High School, Lorain, he then graduated from The Ohio State University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He was Vice President of Rolen Plastics, Grafton where he had worked the past 21 years.

Mr. Long was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Avon. He enjoyed many sporting activities, boating, hunting, fishing and bike riding with his daughter Emma. He was a board member and coach for Avon Little League Baseball and was currently coaching his son Ian's traveling team. He also coached CYO Basketball.

It was Mr. Long who won the contest to name the new minor league baseball team in Avon, the Lake Erie Crushers. In addition to sports he was described as an outstanding cook, preparing mostly ethnic dishes.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 20 years Cathleen Mary Long (nee Landig), son, Ian Thomas Long; daughter Emma Cathleen Long, both at home. Other survivors include his parents: Richard Thomas and Antoinette (nee Trenkl) Long; sisters: Annette Dillon (Timothy) of Vermilion; Susan E. Plas (Justin) of Akron; brothers Michael D. Long of Louisville, KY., and Daniel R. Long of Elyria . He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 32000 Detroit Rd. Avon, Sunday, May 31, from 3 to 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be in Holy Trinity Church, 33601 Detroit Rd. Avon, Monday at 10:00am. Fr. John Miscenko of the Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Avon.

Memorial contributions may be made at any First Merit Bank to college fund set up for Thomas' children.

David M. Kelsay
LORAIN — David M. Kelsay, 47, of Lorain, passed away suddenly at his residence in Lorain on Monday May 11, 2009.

He was born in Campbellsville, Kentucky on May 1, 1962 and had been a resident of Lorain for 31 years.

David was employed as a foreman at Cleveland Plastic Films in Elyria for 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping and had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Kimberly E. (nee Huerner), daughter, Madeline Kelsay of Lorain, sisters, Peggy Shofner of Louisville Kentucky, Judy Gessner of Mt. Sherman Kentucky and Linda Kelsay of Lorain, brother, Steve Kelsay of Elyria and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Kelsay and his parents, Claude and Emogene (nee McQueary) Kelsay.

Friends may call Thursday May 14, 2009 from 6-9 PM at Wyers Funeral Chapel 2900 North Ridge Road, Sheffield Township.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the family.

Linda J. Kinter
LORAIN — Linda J. Kinter, 47, of Lorain died Friday, May 8, 2009 at her home following a short illness.

Miss Kinter was born in Elyria on April 29, 1962, the daughter of the late Doris A (Bates) Kinter and Robert A. Kinter, who survives.

She was a graduate of Elyria High School and was a homemaker.

Miss Kinter is survived by a daughter Stacy A. Kinter of Vermilion, grandson Michael J. Kinter, 3 grandchildren, her father Robert A. (Sandy K.) Kinter, sisters Tina L. Williams of Buffalo, NY., Gail A Kinter of Virginia, brothers Robert S. Kinter of Mishawaka, IN., Allen R Kinter of Lorain, her significant other Eddie Keith of Lorain and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by an infant son.

Friends may call on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 3-8 pm in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio.

Graveside services at St. Mary's Cemetery will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 14, 2009.

John Hyle Thomas
ORANGE CITY, Fla. — John Hyle Thomas, 92, was born in 1916 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, the son of Albert and Mary Thomas.

He lived a long productive life filled with service to God and his fellow man. As a member of the Salvation Army for 85 years, John served many people in need.

He served our country proudly during his United States Navy career, and remained a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He continued to serve fellow veterans as a long-time volunteer at the VA Hospital in Orlando, Florida. He also retired from BF Goodrich.

John leaves behind his faithful wife and devoted caregiver, June (Bartlett) Thomas; a son, Roland (Sharon) Thomas of Vermillion, OH; a daughter, Nancy (Claude) Woods of Amherst, OH; three stepdaughters, Janet Lee (Alfred) Petrone of Osteen, FL, Debra Morgan (Ivan Caban) of Orange City, FL and Linda (Dave) Shine of Sanford, FL; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Interment will take place in Ridge Hill Memorial Park W. Amherst OH on Monday May 18 at 11:30am with full military honors provided by the V.F.W.

Arrangements were entrusted to Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, 1295 Saxon Boulevard, Orange City, FL PH: 386-775-4260.

In lieu of flowers family request donations be made to the Salvation Army Sanford, Florida.

Juli Bechtel
WAKEMAN — Juli Bechtel, age 50, of Wakeman died at her home. She was born on April 9, 1959 in Amherst, and has lived in the area for her whole life.

She was a 1977 graduate of Firelands High School. She had worked as a computer programmer. She loved camping, music, baseball.

She is survived by her two daughters Sara Bechtel, of Scottsdale, AZ, Emily Bechtel, of Amherst, and a son Bruce Bechtel, of South Amherst, her mother Joy (Van Nuys) Priestas, of Elyria, a brother Jack (Sheila) Priestas, of South Amherst, a sister Ardie (Ed) Gareau, of IN, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father John Priestas, and a sister Denise O'Neil.

Friends may call on Monday from 4:30 until the time of memorial services at 7:30 pm at the Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper Street, Wakeman.
