MAIENZA Rosa Maienza, age 90, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at Mount Carmel East Hospital. She was born and raised in Maropat, Italy. Rosa came to America in 1958 with her five children to join her husband Sebastiano and his family. In March of 1984, Rosa & Sebastiano lost their son Salvatore, who was co-owner, with brother Mike, of the Beauty Circle Styling Salon, 5024 Sinclair Rd., and in June of 2001 Rosa lost Sebastiano. Surviving Rosa are her children, Conni, Assunta, Mike and Erminia; two sons-in-law, Vito Testaguzza and Bill Cannard; two daughters-in-law, Maria and Karen; five married grandchildren, Sharon (Matthew) Wear, Chris (Ena) Maienza, Tom (Jennifer) Maienza, Lisa (Jim) Chorey, David (Misty) Maienza; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also, 3 nephews, Vince, Mike and Tony Bruzzese; and 1 niece, Clara Fancelli. Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at the JOHN QUINT & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1177 West Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass 9 a.m. Friday, May 31 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 720 Hamlet St. Fr. William A. Metzger, presider. Entombment St. Joseph cemetery Mausoleum.

MARTZ Richard Martz, age 64, of Columbus, passed away Monday following complications of a stroke. He was an Army veteran and was past president of the Central and South Eastern Ohio Restaurant Association. He was food service director for Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville for many years. Surviving are his wife, Patti; daughter, Renee Martz; granddaughter, Victoria Gregory. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2002 at RODMAN FUNERAL SERVICE, 5464 N. High St. at 2 p.m., where the family will receive friends from 12noon until service time. Contributions may be made to any family member.

MILLER Ernestine M. Miller, age 72, of Centerburg, Sunday, May 26, 2002. Retired from the State Department of Taxation. Active in the Centerburg and Marengo area senior citizen groups. Preceded in death by husband Lawrence, sister Alma Bush and brother Floyd White. Survived by children, Deb (Joe) Siegrist, Judy (Mark) Wikel and Mike (Missy) Miller; grandchildren, Zachary and Amanda Wikel, Dustin and Austin Miller; sisters, Imogene Slane and Armeda Badgley; brothers, Lawrence White and Edward White; several nieces and nephews. MITCHELL Linda Regina Mitchell, age 40, suddenly at her residence. Preceded in death by parents Robert and Rebecca Mitchell. McCOY Mildred E. McCoy, age 92, Tuesday, Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Member Hilltop Lutheran Church and Robert Morris Chapter #372 OES. Preceded in death by husband Ralph J. McCoy, 2 grandchildren, parents and 1 sister. Survived by daughters, Eunice McCoy and Lois (Harold) Lyday of Pataskala; sons, Thomas H. (Janet) McCoy of N.C. and Ralph R. OVERTURF Erneda L. Overturf has joined her husband Raymond to be with him forever. Erneda lived a full and active life. She fulfilled her destiny on earth to help all those in need no matter what. She left this world a better place to live. All of us will miss her very much. Erneda passed away May 26, 2002 at Riverside Methodist Hospital at the age of 85. She was born in Geneva, Oh. to Theda and Ernest Lindsey who preceded her in death. She is survived by brother, Earl (Audrene) Lindsey; sons, Terry (Ann) Overturf, Scott (Pamela) Overturf; granddaughters, Lindsey, Whitney, Alexey, Taurey. Graduate of Geneva High School. Account Manager in Medical Management Co. Volunteer United Appeal, March of Dimes, Red Cross, Columbus Literacy Council and Meals on Wheels. One of the top Ten Women of Columbus in 1964. PHILLIPS Lucille W. Phillips, age 79, of Kettering, Oh., formerly of Columbus and Grahn, Ky., passed away on Sunday, May 26 in Kettering. Lucille was born in Casa, Ark. She retired from the State of Ohio Department of Administrative Services after 26 years of service. She loved her family, enjoyed downtown Columbus and the Cincinnati Reds. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband Chester A. Phillips and 1 daughter Phyllis Janet. She is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Joan Phillips of Columbus, Barry and Connie Phillips of Kettering; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Greg Stover of Cincinnati; 7 grandchildren, Janet Peitzmeyer, Samantha McKeown, Stephanie Swoboda, Jennifer Deaton and Philip, Geoffrey and Christopher Stover; 7 great-grandchildren; and many very special family and friends, Naoma Lyons, Wanda Phillips, Pauline Wallace, Don and Pat Pieper, Ola DeBord, Lester and Arlene Smith, Diane and Dale Petzoldt and many others too numerous to list. POE Volney Earl Poe, age 72, of Dublin, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. A Veteran of the United States Navy and a 40+ year resident of Dublin, Earl was a member of Northwest Chapel Grace Brethren Church. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Iva Poe; children, Jerome (Connie) Poe of Marysville, Susan (Mark) Dougherty of Mt. Gilead and Melinda (Jonathan) Baker of Columbus; grandchildren, Mark Edward Poe, Amanda Ann Poe, Amber Dougherty and Autumn Dougherty; sisters-in-law, Rose (Wade) Hamner, Dottie Workman and Millie Evans, all of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002 at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 515 High St., Worthington, OH, 614-885-4006. REED James "Jimmy" Arthur Reed, age 49, passed away from his mother's arms into the arms of Jesus on Sunday morning, May 26, 2002 at OSU Medical Center after a courageous battle with lung cancer for the past 11 months. Jim was born January 7, 1953 in Greenup County, Ky. to his parents, Jim and Hilda Craft Reed who survive. His is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Charles (Bonnie) Reed of Williamsport, Oh., Brian (Tami) Reed of Columbus, Terri Reed and Ginger Hale, also of Columbus. He will also be missed by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, a great host of friends, and special friend, Shirley Skipper. Jim had a great personality and was a very free spirit. He was an avid golfer, have achieved a "hole in one," and loved all sports and the out-of-doors. Employee of Watson Electric Motor Service. RIGGS Vena J. Riggs, age 84, of Columbus, Oh., passed away Monday May 27, 2002 at Doctors Hospital West. She was retired from Ohio Bell with 30 years of service. Member of OES, Moose Lodge #11, DAR, and a 60-year member of the Grange. Preceded in death by husband James Riggs; parents Carl and Myrtie Woodyard; brother Blaine Woodyard and stepdaughter Shirley Snively. Vena is survived by her brother, Robert Woodyard; sister-in-law, Lauribel Woodyard; nieces, Lyndell (Jim) Pool, and Rhonda (Steve) Jackson; great-nephews Aaron and Adam Jackson; great-niece, Adessa Jackson; stepson, Jimmy Riggs. Visitation Wednesday, 5 - 8 p.m. at MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 2697 Columbus St., Grove City, where the funeral will follow at 8 p.m. Pastor Gail Sims officiating. RISCH Carl W. Risch, 80, of Logan, died May 27, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus. Born January 11, 1922 in Hocking Co., son of the late Irvin V. and Margaret Kathryn Skinner Risch. He was a retired farmer. Founding member of the Hocking Valley Historical Vehicle Club, the Model A Ford Club of America, where he won several national titles, the Scioto Model A Club in Columbus, The Southern A's, The American Truck Historical Society, the Model T Club of America, Model T Club International, Shoe Box Ford Club. Survived by wife, Eleanor Matson Risch; sons, Harry (Susie) Risch of Lancaster and Michael D. (Chris) Risch of Logan; daughters, Felica Kauffmann of Sarasota, Fla. and Mrs. Ted (Carla) Chaffin of Harrisburg, Oh.; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella R. Haldeman of Bucyrus, Oh. and Mrs. Walt (Betty Lou) Buchsieb of New Albany. Preceded in death by wife of 37 years Ilene Risch who died September 1, 1989. Friends may call at the CARDARAS FUNERAL HOME, Logan on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Friday 1 hour prior the 10 a.m. service at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Logan with Rev. SHERMAN Arthur "Art" E. Sherman III, CCM, beloved husband of Victoria, age 63, of Reynoldsburg, OH, died on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at his residence. Retired with the State of Ohio, Treasurers Office. Veteran U.S. Navy, where he excelled as a player with the U.S. Navy Soccer Team. Graduate of The Ohio State University and attended Purdue University Graduate School. Preceded in death by his father Arthur E. Sherman, Jr. Survived by children, Scott (Sherri) White and Laura (Shane) Robertson; grandchildren, Alex White and Tyler Robertson; mother, Helen Sherman; cherished sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Roy Luna; brother, Wayne Sherman; nephew, Roy (Gloria) Luna; great nephew, Jarrett; great niece, Ashley Luna; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Iva and Bob Sammons and Hugh R. SIMMS Michael Simms, age 47, of Columbus, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at his home after an extended illness. An avid fisherman that traveled over much of our country, he is survived by sons, Michael (Dawn), Brian (Candice), Sean and Samuel Simms; grandchildren, Maryanne, Shyanna, Connor and Randy; brothers, Samuel S. (Jane) Simms Jr., Howard L. (Katie), and John A. (Carol) Simms; sisters, Anita J Riccardi, Sharon (Dwight) Martin, Carolyn Simms, and Theresa (Joe) Ferrell; numerous nieces and nephews. SMITH Betty J. Smith, age 81, passed away at her home on Tuesday, May 28, 2002. Retired from Karshner Ceramics. Member of Glenwood United Methodist Church. She enjoyed ceramics and the joy of her grandsons and great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters. STEWART Rev. Lavetta Serrott Stewart, age 89, of Columbus, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at Wesley Glen Health Center. Lavetta spent her entire life serving God and people as a college professor, ordained Methodist minister, teacher, music director, evangelist and Army chaplain. Also, she was a chaplain at Epworth Village and Director of Christian Education at Rader Memorial Methodist Church. She and her husband were producers of the Spanish United Methodist Radio program Viva Nueva. Preceded in death by husband Dr. Carl Stewart, parents George and Beulah Serrott, brothers George, Gordon and Clyde. Survived by daughter, Barbara (Rev. Hubert) Floyd; son, Joseph Stewart; sisters-in-law, Beverly, Garnet and Virginia Serrott; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. STRAIGHT William F. Straight, age 66, of Grove City, born in Waterloo, OH May 12 1936, passed away May 27, 2002 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. He was retired from Cantwell Machinery Co. of Columbus. 1954 graduate of Cadmus High School. Member of Int'l. Union of Operating Engineers for over 30 years. Preceded in death by father Elva "Beecher" Straight, brothers-in-law Jim Brumfield and Bud Jenkins. Bill is survived by his wife of 29 years, Constance L. (Wright); children, Roger W. (Yvonne) of Columbus, Rogena (Bill) Twomey of Crystal Lake, IL and Ryan M. Straight of Grove City; granddaughter, Alexis Straight of FL; mother, Blanche Straight Shaver of Patriot, OH; sisters, Agnes Brumfield of Gallipolis, Polly Jenkins of Chesapeake, Elladean (Paul) Mitchell of Patriot, Lawana (Brian) Bostic of Patriot and Sherry (Eldon) Paugh of Milton, WV; brother, Ronald (Rosalee) Straight of Oak Hill; numerous nieces and nephews. SWEPSTON Donald S. Swepston, age 70, Saturday May 25, 2002 at his home. He graduated from Aquinas High School in 1950, having lettered in varsity basketball and baseball. Don earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from The Ohio State University in 1954, and earned his Law Degree from The Ohio State University in 1957. He was hired in 1958 into the Legal Division of the Ohio Department of Taxation, and spent 38 years in that division serving as a Hearing Officer, a Legislative Liaison, Division Administrator, and Deputy Tax Commissioner before becoming the Legal Counsel to the Personal Property Tax Division. He was an aeronautical book collector amassing 15,000 different volumes on military aviation and he served in the Army National Guard for six years in the late Fifties and early Sixties. Don was a life-long member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Columbus. He was born on March 17, 1932 in Dayton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents Roger and Elizabeth Swepston, and is survived by his brothers, Barry Swepston of Columbus, Greg (Janis) Swepston of Marion; and niece, Julie (Abel) Swepston Rivas of Orlando, Fla. Friends may call Wednesday 4 - 8 p.m. at the NOVAK FUNERAL HOME, 4476 N. High St. (two blocks north of Henderson Rd.), (614)268-8811.
