MAPES Dennis Michael Mapes, 54, of Erie, Pa., died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at St. Vincent Health Center. He was born July 22, 1947 in Portsmouth, Oh., son of the late Cleo Spillman. He was employed for over 15 years as District Sales Manager for Verizon. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, serving two tours of duty. He was a member of St. Julia's Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his uncle Jerry S. "Doc" Knighton. Survivors include his mother, Aileen Webb Campbell, Ashland, Ky.; his wife of 31 years, Nancy Kattenhorn Mapes, Erie, Pa.; two daughters, Stacy Maloney (Ferdinand) Maloney, York, Pa., Jenna Elizabeth Mapes, Erie, Pa.; two sons, Chadwick Michael Mapes, Lancaster, Pa., Ryan Patrick Mapes, York, Pa.; one step-brother, Ralph David Campbell, Ashland, Ky.; one step-sister, Melissa Campbell of Batavia, Oh.; two granddaughters, Corinne and Deirdre Maloney, York, Pa.; aunt, Elsie Knighton, Portsmouth, Oh.; many nieces and nephews. Frienfs may call at the EDWARD J. GARR FUNERAL HOME, 459 East 12th Street, Erie, Pa. 16503, Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. Service will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m, St. Julia's Catholic Church. Full Military Services will be conducted at Gate of Heaven cemetery following the Mass at St. Julia's Church. MERRICK Nora Ann Merrick, 81, formerly of North Shore Retirement Center, Lakeside, Oh., passed away at Providence Care Center, Sandusky on May 31. Prior to 1999, Nora was a lifelong resident of Columbus and Worthington and a member of Worthington Christian Church. She will be remembered for the faithful childcare she so lovingly provided to families in the Grandview and Upper Arlington areas. In addition, her love and devotion to her twenty nieces and nephews was unmatched. Nora was the second of ten children born to Raymond and Nora (Hurbaugh) Merrick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister Elizabeth L. Miller and brothers Donald and Charles Merrick and sister-in-law Doris Merrick, nephews Scott Merrick, David (Butch) Taggard and Bryce Ziegler. Surviving Nora are sisters, Margaret Merrick and Dorothy (Lee) Taggart of Columbus; brothers, Richard (Helen) Merrick of Encinita, Calif., William Merrick of Blountville, Ala., Raymond (Rilla) Merrick of Mt. Gilead, Oh., David (Nancy) Merrick of Lakeside/Marblehead, Oh.; and sister-in-law, Betty Merrick of Virginia Beach, Va. There will be no visitation and the family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 4131 North High St., Columbus, 614-261-1040. MILLS Garnet Jane Mills, age 94, of Westerville, passed away on May 31, 2002 at New Albany Care Center. Garnet was once co-owner of the Mills' Markets of Columbus. She was for more than 50 years a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of Thea Court, The Shrine of the Eastern Star and The White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was also a member of the Good Shepherd Community Church and former member of Washington Avenue Church which she still supported. Preceded in death by her husband Donald B. Mills (1978), daughter Juanita and son Robert. She is survived by her daughter, Betty (David) Broek; 7 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 3 sisters. MURNANE Helen C. (Murphy) Murnane, age 86, Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Graduate Mt. Carmel School of Nursing, 1936 and South High School. Member Mt. Carmel and South High School Alumnae Associations. Belonged to Kiwanis Women's Club and was also a member of the Daughters of Erin and St. Patrick Church Women's Club. Preceded in death by husband Joseph D. Murnane, brother Morgan C. Murphy, granddaughter Marie P. Murnane, great-grandchild Grace Luckhaupt. Survived by children, Patrick J. and wife, Carolyn, Karen and husband, Tim Luckhaupt, Tom and wife, Kathy, Jim and wife, Patty, Mary Ann Murnane, Patricia and husband, Jeff Cornwell; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. OGDEN Charlotte I. Ogden, age 86, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, June 01, 2002 at Riverside Hospital. Mrs. Ogden was a 1932 graduate of West High, attended the Ohio State University. Member of the Buff and Brown Breakfast Club. She had been employed for 33 years by the State of Ohio Department of Taxation as a Sales Tax Auditor. Charlotte was a member of the American Business Women's Association, and longtime member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church where she was a member of United Methodist Women and Chairperson of Deborah Circle, Past President of Sunset Literacy Club. She is a member of the Columbus Cancer Clinic where she is President of Jesse March Powell Ray. Member of Columbus Athletic Club and Moose Lodge #11.Charlotte enjoyed playing games of Bridge and Poker. Mrs. Ogden is preceded in death by her husband, John F. Ogden. PETERSON Martha Faye Peterson, age 57, passed away Friday May 31, 2002. Preceded in death by her mother Mattie M. Johnson and sister Mary Jean Johnson. Survived by children, Donita F. Peterson, Don F. (Jonda) Peterson III, Donnette F. Peterson, Donneal F. Peterson and Donee' F. Peterson; sister, Barbara S. Johnson; brother, James F. Johnson Sr.; grandchildren, Donneal F. Peterson II, Tia M. Peterson and Dondriona K. Peterson; several nieces and nephews; many other family members and a host of loving, dear friends. Martha was a long time servant of Jehovah God. Her life was woven with the thread of sincere love for her God and Father, and this love was what gave her strength to raise five children as a single parent for many years. Visitation will be 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the O. R. WOODYARD CO. CHAPEL, 1346 S. POLAND Evelyn R. Poland, 77, of Milford Center died Saturday morning at Heartland of Marysville. A homemaker, she was a member of Trinity Chapel in Milford Center, and VFW Post #3320 Auxiliary in Marysville. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She was born October 15, 1924 in West Jefferson to the late Jacob M. and Ruth N. Price Frey. She married Howard T. "Ted" Poland December 15, 1945 in Urbana. He also preceded her in death April 10, 1989. She is survived by her son, Larry A. Poland and his fiancé Diana Iiams of Raymond; grandchildren, Lori A. and Marc A. Poland; sisters, Pauline Beachy, Mary Dietsch, both of West Jefferson, and Doris Way of Phoenix, Ariz. Calling hours will be Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the INGRAM FUNERAL HOME, 975 N. Maple St., Marysville 43040, where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Chris Polley and Rev. Steve Wood will officiate with burial following at Milford Center cemetery. PRESTON Donald Leroy Preston, age 74, went to Heaven on Sunday, June 2, 2002. Preceded in death by parents Anna and Claude Preston, brothers Ralph and Kenneth Preston, Murry Mercier, great-granddaughter Kylie Taylor. Survived by wife of 50 years, Kay Preston; brother, Bill Preston; sister, Dorothy Holsinger; children, Peggy (Nick) Hunter, Donna (Russ) Goble, Dicky (Steve) Butts, Gary (Jane) Preston, Beverly (Jim) McKean, Chris (Al) Taylor, Rick (Michelle) Preston, Ritchie (Chrissy) Preston, Tammy Preston, Pammy (Rick) Edwards; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. REYNOLDS Harry E. Reynolds, 75, went to join Jesus, Saturday, June 1, 2002. Born August 11, 1926 to the late Floyd and Lucy (Scott) Reynolds. Preceded in death by sisters Tish and Charlotte Dunn, brothers Floyd and Wesley Reynolds. Member of Washington Avenue United Methodist Church. Harry was a long time musician around Ohio. Retired from Bron Shoe Co. after 33 years, and spent 17 years with the Carroll Chain Co. Survived by loving wife Billie J.; son, R. Douglas (Cheryl) Reynolds; daughter, Lori (Brad) Brown; grandchildren, Errol S. Reynolds and Kalie "Kay Kay" M. Green; loving caregiver, niece, Lynn Haley, R.N.; sisters-in-law, Rose Noland and Ruth Peters; very close sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette (Carl) Haley. Friends are asked to gather at the O.R. WOODYARD CO. CHAPEL, 1346 S. High St. Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. where the funeral service will take place Wednesday 10:30 a.m. Rev. Sam Harnish officiating. Interment at Obetz cemetery.

ROBERTS Carman Roberts, Jr., age 81, of West Jefferson, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002 in Madison County Hospital, London. He retired from Otis Elevator as an electrician, was a member of Madison Lodge #221 F&AM, was a U.S. Army Sergeant of WW II. Survivors include wife, Lena M. Debord Roberts; two daughters, Clara (John) Cain of West Jefferson, Joyce (T.G.) Davidson of LaGrange, Tex.; son, Carman Roberts, III of Powell; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph (Alice) Roberts of West Jefferson. Funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday at the RADER-McDONALD FUNERAL HOME, 1355 West Main St., West Jefferson, Ohio with Pastor Ed Akers and Pastor George Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Hampton cemetery, West Jefferson. Family and friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Masonic Service Tuesday evening.

ROTH Carl Roth, age 91, of Columbus, Oh., passed away June 1, 2002. Preceded in death by wife Fay, brother Irvin Roth and sister Jeanette Friedman. Survived by son, Michael (Rennie) Roth of Ann Arbor, Mich.; sisters, Sylvia Baumel, Eva (Morris) Shindler and Shirley Greenfield; sister-in-law, Ada Roth of Columbus; grandchildren, Anne Roth of San Francisco, Calif., and David Roth of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. SMITH Jack Owen Smith, age 70, of Reynoldsburg, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002 at his home. He was a retired Naval Reserve Commander and Nationwide agent. Charter member Highland Golf Club, Board of Governors C.D.G.A., graduate of Reynoldsburg High School and Washington and Lee University, and an inductee of the Reynoldsburg High School Athletic Wall of Fame. An only child, he is preceded in death by his parents Marvin L. and Thelma J. Smith. Survived by his wife of 48 years, Carole; children, Scott (Robin), Zoa Vicki, and Brad (Teri); grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, Andrew, Rebecca, Spencer, and Tyler. (Robert) Roberts; 9 grandchildren; Cassie, Candice, Anthony, Kyle, Caleb, Andrew, Derek, Jareth and Logan; sister Sharon (John) DeReno; brother-in-law Bob Dougherty; many nieces, nephews, family, friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by parents Paul and Flora Miller; sister Betty Dougherty; and brother Kenneth. STRICKLER Martha Ann Strickler, age 89, died on Friday, May 31, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital, Marysville, Oh. Retired as a legal secretary with the Nationwide Insurance Co. Preceded in death by her husband William Strickler. Survived by her son, Stephen Strickler; grandsons, Wesley and Eric Strickler; nieces, Maryland Canfield and Barbara Hegler; nephew, Dan Ditter; good friend and loved one, Kim Fields; and many relatives and friends. WEBER Eva E. Weber, age 90, went to be with her Lord Sunday, June 2, 2002 at St. Rita Nursing Home.
Member of Lockbourne Road Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband Glenn, 1 brother and 1 sister. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Gene Price; son and daughter-in-law, George and Betty Weber; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren- 5 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
