SANDFORT Helen E. Sandfort, 92, of Columbus, Friday, August 16, 2002 at Wesley Glen Retirement Community in Columbus. Graduate of OSU, BA degree in 1931 and MA degree in Fine Arts in 1938. Long time teacher and administrator in the Columbus Public Schools. Helen was an inspiration to her family and the many friends who knew and loved her. She always saw the best in others and encouraged those around her to set high standards for themselves. Those with whom she developed lifelong friendships include neighbors, long time associates within the Columbus education and art community, and foreign students attending OSU. Beginning in 1944, Helen taught art education for 6 years at Indianola Junior High School before being promoted to Director of Art Education for the Columbus Public School System. Helen introduced art instruction into the elementary school level by creating a program of art classes that were broadcast into classrooms by radio station WCBE. As director of Art Education, Helen brought national recognition to the school system through the Arts Impact Program. Invited in 1969 by the Ohio Department of Education to develop a program for enriching art education in public schools, Helen was successful in obtaining a federal grant to fund the placing of teams of professional artists into the school system. These artists assisted classroom teachers in integrating art education into classroom curriculum. Helen retired from the Columbus City Schools in 1975 after 30 years of service, but her support of art education continued. While serving on the board of trustees of the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Helen implemented the Artists-in-Schools program that brings professional artists into educational settings. This program has grown from an original 32 elementary schools to 215 schools throughout the Franklin County area. Throughout her life, Helen remained a passionate believer in the value of the arts in enhancing the educational process and in making a difference in children's lives.
