UPDYKE Dorothy L. Updyke, age 87, of Ashville, died Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. She was born July 3, 1915 in Walnut Township, daughter of the late Orren and Nellie (Crowley) Updyke. She was employed as a court reporter for 50 years and served under Judges Twilliger, Crist, Radcliff, Ammer, and Kneece. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gaited horses and was an avid Ohio State Football fan. She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Elsie Updyke of Ashville; and several very special friends. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002 in the chapel of the DEFENBAUGH-WISE-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, Circleville with Pastors Don R. Bachman Jr. and John Mittermaier officiating. Interment to follow at Forest cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. WALKER Donald Ray Walker, 62, of Ashville, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2002. Born February 9, 1940 in Corbin, Ky. to the late Marion C. and Anna Douglas Stansberry Walker. He was a retired Truck Driver for the Kroger Co. Member of Reynoldsburg Masonic Lodge and Local 413 Teamster. Survived by loving wife, Joyce of 44 years; daughters, Donna (Lewis) Vichinsky, Blacklick, Oh., Michelle (Jeffrey) Pluta, Warren, Oh. and Susan (Timothy Jr.) Brent, Nashville; brother, Bill Walker, Somerset, Ky.; sisters, Ella Coldiron, Corbin, Ky., Lou King and Ama Lee Phillips, Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, Alex and Julius Vichinsky, Jenna, Garrett and Joy Pluta, Jonathan and Ashley Davis and Cody Brent. WALLS John R. Walls, 66, of Grove City, died Monday, September 2, 2002 in Atlanta after a sudden illness. Born in Lincoln Co., Ky. to John and Eunice. John was a veteran of the United States Army, Member and Deacon at Highland Baptist Church, and retired from Auto Club Insurance Co. He was preceded in death by son Mark, September 2001, his parents and his sister Lois. Survivors include his loving family, wife of 42 years, Mary Ann; daughter, Beth (Bill) Taylor; and his best buddy and grandson, Zack. Survivors also include sister, Ewona and Bobby Robbins; brothers, Charles (Willene) Walls and Marvin Walls of Stanford, Ky.; 2 nieces and 3 nephews and numerous friends. ZIPRIN Lottie Ziprin, age 90, died Spetember 4, 2002. Preceded in death by husband Irving Ziprin. Survived by daughter, Barbara Ornstein; son, Dr. Richard Ziprin; grandchildren, David and Michelle Ornstein, Suzyn and John Dugger and Brian Ziprin; great-granddaughter, Samantha Lee Ornstein. ASHBROOK Lela E. Ashbrook, 95, of Johnstown, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at Licking Memorial Hospital. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery, Johnstown, OH. Mrs. Ashbrook was born September 5, 1907 in Sunbury, OH to the late Hardin and Odessa Grandstaff Barcus. She was a member of the Johnstown United Methodist Church. BROCK Gary Gene Brock, 49, of Canal Winchester, passed on at his residence on Tuesday, September 17, 2002. He was employed as a manager at Advanced Auto Parts on N. High Street in Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Sheila; brother, Keith (Patty) Brock of Gahanna; sister, Connie (Bert) Grimm of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; 2 sons, Eddie (Jeannette) Hill and Daniel Hill, both of Columbus; 1 daughter, Michelle (James) Lutz of Troy; grandchildren, Kasandra, Noah and Nolan Lutz of Troy, Oh. He is preceded in death by his mother Leona Pearl Brock and father Wilbur S. Brock. BROWN Owen D. Brown, age 64, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2002 at his residence. CALLENDER Maxine Callender, age 90, of Worthington, died Friday, September 13, 2002 at the Laurels of Worthington Nursing Home. She was a 50 plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Newark, Oh. and a member of the choir and soloist at First Methodist Church in Newark, Oh. Her survivors include her son, Robert Callender of North Olmstead, Oh.; grandsons, Craig Callender of Rocky River, Oh. and Chad (Crystal) Callender of Detroit, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Clark and Caroline Callender, both of Detroit, Mich. A Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2002 at the Activities Center of Stafford Village, 814 Hartford St., Worthington with Rev. John Schmitt officiating. CAULKINS (ALBURN) Jean LaVonne Caulkins, age 79, longtime resident of Columbus, Oh., died Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at the Rockmill Rehabilitation Centre in Carroll, Oh. Born in Lafayette, Ind., she was a graduate of Jefferson High School. Retired from Beaver Press in Columbus, Oh. She is survived by her children, Michael Roach, George Roach (Mary Sue), Gerald Roach (Pamela), Janice Henry; grandchildren, Jason, Brett, Megan, Stacy, Walker; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Phoebe. Preceded in death by her husbands Jorge F. Roach, Robert L. Caulkins, sister Kathryn Jane Villines, longtime friend and companion Bill Ochsenwald. A friend to all, her genuine kindness and good nature will be missed by many. Jean desired no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. CLARK James A. Clark, Jr., age 61, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, September 14, 2002 at his home in Tequesta, Fla. Mr. Clark was the manager of Century 21 Horizon Properties in Jupiter, Fla. and taught Real Estate at Indian River Community College. Prior to his move to Fla., Mr. Clark spent many years as a resident and business owner and was active in local government in Gahanna, Oh. A Vietnam-era veteran, Mr. Clark served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex. Mr. Clark attended the University of Scranton and received a BA degree from Maryknoll College, Glen Ellen, IL and a Masters degree in Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Survivors include 2 sons, Christopher P. Clark of Reston, VA and Colin A. Clark of Miami, FL; 4 brothers, Philip of Mendham, NJ, William of Schenectady, NY, Jordan of Rockville, MD and Arthur of Pittston, PA; 2 sisters, Maryann Maria of Clark's Summit, PA and Patricia Gibson of Rockville, MD; and loving companion, Jacqueline Clark. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Cristina, Michael, Kevin, Helena and Eamon Clark; as well as 2 step-sons, Michael and Timothy Ferrell of Columbus. Mr. Clark is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 20, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary's Help of Christians Church on North Main Street in Pittston. COATES, Ph.D. Edward "Ted" Coates Ph.D., age 81, of Worthington, passed away of natural causes on Monday, September 16, 2002 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Ted served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II, retiring as a captain. He was still active in the LST association, serving as treasure. A three-sport standout at N.Y. State University at Cortland, N.Y., Coates developed the master's and Doctoral Sport Management Program at The Ohio State University – one of the original three curricula in the U.S. designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles in the administration of sports and sporting events. In 1947, Coates earned a master's degree from Columbia University Teacher's College and began his professional career as a teacher, coach and athletic director at Royalton-Hartland Central School in Middleport, N.Y. He entered the doctoral program at Ohio State University in 1963 and earned a Ph.D. in 1966. He specialized in and co-authored a widely acclaimed revised text about the facility planning of physical education, recreation and athletics. He chaired the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance's Council of Facilities and Equipment. He took up tennis and became a nationally ranked player at the Super Senior level. Ted is survived by his wife, Norma; children, Leslie (Steve) Chadwell of Worthington, OH., Karen Coates of Myrtle Beach, SC., Gary (Patti) Coates of Mt. Vernon, OH. and Sally Coates of Idaho Springs, CO.; 6 grandchildren, Michael Duncan, Stephanie Chadwell, Jeffrey Chadwell, Jennifer Coates, Tyler Coates and Colton Martin. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High Street (* mile South of I-270.) Interment, with military honors, 11 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2002 at Dayton National cemetery. CONRAD Peter W. Conrad, age 33, Tuesday, September 17, 2002. Survived by son, Kyle; parents, Carl C. "Pete" and Miriam "Lynn"; brothers, Geoffrey (Karen), Gregory, Bryan (LouAnne) and Ely (Rhonda); sisters, Megan (Timothy) Nixon, Kathryn Conrad; and dear friend, Heidi Felten; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. CRABBE Barbara Ann Crabbe, 69, of Columbus, died Monday, September 16, 2002 in Hilliard Mill Run Care Center. Born July 10, 1933 in Stryker, Oh., the daughter of the late Clinton and Dorothy (Leaper) Whittington. Preceded in death by husband Donald T. Crabbe. She is survived by children, Deborah K. May (Pat McGraner) of Orient, Donald C. (Karen) Crabbe of Grove City, Sherre (Mike) Ezzo of Galloway; grandchildren, Jeremy (Traci) Milner, Lyndsy and Ashley Crabbe, Brian and Matt Ezzo; brother, Ronald Whittington of Columbus; sister, Betty Scott of Pickerington. DAWSON Stephen (Steve) Dawson, age 64, of Columbus, Tuesday, September 16 of heart failure. He was a local businessman, printer, and pilot. DELONG John S. "Sam" Delong, age 13, passed away Monday, September 16, 2002 at his residence. Sam attended Dominion Middle School and will be sadly missed by all of his school friends.
