PHILLIAN Nadine Beatty Phillian, August 2, 2002, age 89. 1935 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church. Active in The Ohio State University Women's Golf Association and The Ohio State University Women's Club. After moving to Cincinnati, she and her husband were members of the Wyoming Golf Club. Survived by husband of 64 years, Harry E. Phillian; daughter, Jody (Dr. Timothy) Pohlman and grandchildren, Gunnar and Brittany Pohlman, Wyoming, Ohio. Private family interment, Oakgrove cemetery, Delaware, Ohio. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 10, at 1 p.m. at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 4131 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio. PURRINGTON Mary Lee Purrington, age 49, passed away Friday, August 2, 2002 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Born in Salem, Ohio, she was a graduate of Salem High School, Oberlin College and Columbia University in New York City. She was preceded in death by parents Richard and Amy Purrington, and sisters Julie Ann and Martha Jane Purrington. She is survived by sister, Amy Katharine Purrington and her husband, Michael Upfold of Granville, Ohio; and brother, James Langley Purrington; niece, Katelyn Anne Purrington; nephews, Nathon and Simon Purrington, all of Salem, Ohio. She was employed by Select Specialty Hospital at Riverside Hospital as an occupational therapist. Always a warm, caring and selfless individual, Mary Lee will be sadly missed by her loving circle of family and friends. Memorial contribuitons may be made to the American Cancer Society and to the Arthur James Cancer Center at The Ohio State University Medical Center. RAUSCH Donald L. Rausch, Sr., age 60, of Hilliard, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2002. Mr. Rausch retired from the State of Ohio. He was a special father, brother and grandfather. Donald is preceded in death by his wife Sylvia J. (Abbott) Rausch and his parents Charles and Eva Rausch. He is survived by his children, Donald L. (Lisa) Rausch, Jr., Randy A. Rausch, Melinda (Richard) Garbrandt and John W. RETZ Lamonte H. Retz, born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, September 16, 1905. Resident of Columbus, Ohio since 1916. Graduate of North High School, class of 1922. Completed undergraduate degree in biological science at The Ohio State University where he graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1929. Practiced dentistry in Clintonville until his retirement in 1971. Life member of the Columbus Dental Society, Ohio State Dental Society and the American Dental Association. 50 year member of Northern Kiwanis. Member of Masonic Lodge #684, Scottish Rite, and Aladdin Temple Shrine. Member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church and in close relationship with Calvary Bible Church. Survived by wife of 67 years, Gertrude; son and daughter-in-law, Lamonte and Sharon Retz, Jr., Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Jennifer (Marc) R. Battistone, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Geoffrey (Susan) H. Retz, Columbus, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Battistone. RICHISON Carl M. Richison, 82, died Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. A member of St. Matthias Catholic Church. A veteran of WWII having served with the U.S. Navy. A retired District Representative of International Ironworkers Union. He is survived by his loving wife, Anna Ruth; daughter, Sheila (John) Reiner; son, Carl "Butch" (Sue); grandchildren, Eric (Shelly), Christy (Scot), Sara, Genevieve, Erika, Max, Alexis, Pete and Alex; great-grandchildren, Tiffani, Brittany and Deric; brother, Jim Richison; numerous nieces and nephews. SCANLON Robert E. Scanlon, age 85, died Saturday, August 3, 2002. Born December 24, 1916 in Lima, Ohio to John J. Scanlon and Clara M. (Poulin). Preceded in death by parents, 7 brothers and 4 sisters. Survived by wife, Phyllis (Lingo) Scanlon of Powell, Oh.; daughter, Jan (Al) DeWolf of Powell, with whom he made his home; 2 granddaughters, Stephanie (Garry) Byrd of Columbus and Sabrina DeWolf of Powell; 2 great-grandsons; nieces, nephews; special life long friend, John Ginder of Galion; and his beloved pet, Mr. Hobbes. Mr. Scanlon was a veteran of WWII serving as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps with the 486th Bomb Squadron and the 310th Bomb Group in the European Theater. His final mission was with the 379th Bomb Squadron. He moved from Lima, Ohio to Galion, Ohio in 1930 and graduated from Galion High School, Class of 1937. He was a mail carrier in Galion retiring from the U.S. Postal Service in 1975. He moved to Lexington, Oh. in 1978 and to Powell, Oh. in 1993. Member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree with the Knights of Columbus as well as a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. The family will receive friends and family 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High Street (1/2 mile South of I-270) where a Memorial Service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2002. Fr. Jeff J. Rimelspach presiding. Mr. Scanlon will be cremated according to his wishes. TAYLOR Julya Mae Taylor, age 63, Friday, July 26, 2002 at Riverside Hospital. Formerly of Cleveland, Ohio. A member of Ebenenzer Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Usher Board for 13 years until her illness. She attended Apostolic Faith Temple prior to her death. Employed as a professional secretary and stenographer at Veterans Administration Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Retired from North Central Mental Health, Columbus, Oh. Predeceased by parents Walter L. and Alberta Smith Taylor, Sr., brother Walter L. Taylor, Jr. and sister Virjinya Taylor. Survived by daughter, Jul'Yanna M. WILLIAMS Edward "Coach" Williams, 78, of Columbus, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 2:30 a.m. in his residence. He was born on April 1, 1924 in Underwood, Al. The son of the late Samuel Williams and Nellie Watson Williams. A veteran of the United States Armed Forces serving in the U.S. Army. Retired from D.C.S.C. A faithful member of Church of Christ Apostolic Faith where he was a Deacon. In his loving memory he leaves to cherish his wife of 25 years, Margie V; one daughter, Edwina Jackson of Columbus; one son, Melvin (Diane) Williams of Antioch, California; four sisters, Lillie Johnson, twin sister, Ethel Conley, Lillian Merchant and Essie (James M.) Bowman, all of Columbus; three brothers, James, Jasper, and George, all of Columbus; 15 grandchildren; three step-children, Robert and Ralph Oakes of Columbus and Regina Oakes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. FLUKER-GRANTHAM Geraldine "Geri" Fluker-Grantham, 46, of Columbus and Elyria, died Saturday, August 3, 2002 in her home suddenly. She was born in Elyria, moving to Columbus 7 years ago. She was a graduate of Elyria High School, Class of 1974. She worked at Ford Motor Company in Lorain for several years. Was a member of Bethany Baptist Church of Elyria. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Survived by sons, Kevin Fluker of Cleveland and Keith Jackson of Columbus; companion, Joe Jackson of Columbus; father, Virgil Fluker Sr.; twin sister, Gertrude Fluker; brothers, Virgil Fluker Jr., all of Elyria and Marcus Jones of Medina; 2 grandchildren. FRYMAN A funeral service for Allie M. Fryman, 95, of Granville, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at the McPEEK FUNERAL HOME, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery in Granville. Mrs. Fryman, a resident of Granville for over 70 years, died August 5, 2002 at the Heath Nursing Care Center. She was born September 5, 1906 in Millersport, to the late Lewis and Nora (Farley) Downard. Mrs. Fryman was a loving wife and mother to her family. She was the embodiment of a Christian in every sense of the word who lived her life by example. She touched the lives of those who came in contact with her and who were fortunate enough to know her. Mrs. Fryman was a graduate of Millersport High School. Formerly a member of First Baptist Church in Granville for over 50 years, most recently she was a member of Spring Hills Baptist Church in Granville. Mrs. Fryman was an active member of Women's Aglow Fellowship. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ann Fryman of Granville; daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Chuck White of Worthington; sister, Maurine Van Buren of Brownsville; grandchildren and their spouses, David and Julie Fryman, Amy and Mike Grim, Elizabeth Fryman, Craig and Zoe White, Michael White and Brian White; 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Virgil "Tug" Fryman, who died July 13, 1978, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
