HICKS William L. "Bill" Hicks, age 67, lifelong resident of Hilliard, died Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Arbors of Hilliard. Born March 26, 1935 in Hilliard. Affiliated and baptized at First Apostolic Church of Dublin, located on Eiterman Road. Retired from Prairie Township after more than 30 years of service. Preceded in death by parents James "Arbie" and Lottie (Holbrook) Hicks, brother Ray Junior Hicks and brother-in-law Charles Scarberry. Survived by wife, Ruth M. (Wells) Hicks, whom he married May 1, 1955 in her parents home on Amity Rd.; children, Kathy Lynn (Wayne) Johnson of Waverly, Kitty Mae (Roger) Hall of Columbus and William L. "Billy" Hicks Jr. of Hilliard; 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles "Gene" (Mildred) Hicks of Hilliard and Eddie James (Thelma) Hicks of Hilliard; sisters, Ruby Mae (Earl) Phillips of Plain City, Minnie Ellen Scarberry of McConnelsville and Carol Jean (Clifford) Bailey of New Lexington; sister-in-law, Barbara "Bobbie" Hicks of West Jefferson; numerous nieces and nephews, many friends and neighbors. KLAVINS Juris V. Klavins, 63, of 108 Plum St., died August 6, 2002 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born December 30, 1938 in Riga, Latvia to the late Vilhelm and Marta (Winters) Klavins. He received a B.S. in Education from Otterbein College, B.S. in Elementary Education from OSU, and a Masters in Education from Xavier University. He taught in the Danville Schools for 36 years retiring in 1997 after serving as principal for 22 years. He was a member of the Danville United Methodist Church, Danville Merchants Golf League, Danville 200 Club, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Knox County Retired Teachers Association and served as an Usher for OSU football games. He is survived by his wife, Judy (Young) Klavins, whom he married August 26, 1961. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Julie Christine Beard of Mansfield and Jennifer Ann (Barry) Egan of Troy; 3 granddaughters, Chelsey and Mallory Egan and Lauren Beard; a brother, Maris (Carol) Klavins of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Gina (Ethan) Flaks of Syracuse, N.Y. Funeral service will be held Friday, August 9, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Danville United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Plummer officiating. Burial will be in the Workman cemetery at Danville. LITTLER Edward Lee Littler, age 78, of Columbus, died unexpectedly Sunday, August 4, 2002 at his home. He was born August 20, 1923 in Pioneer, Oh. and was raised in Springfield and Bellfontaine. He Graduated from Zanesfield High School and served in the Merchant Marine during WW II. He worked on the railroads and was a salesman for several companies, including Jewel Tea. Retired from the US Postal Service. Member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Preceded in death by parents Charles and Esta Littler, wife Dorothy L. Littler and nephew Gene Watkins. Survived by son, Christian Littler; sisters, Gracetta Williams of Reynoldsburg and Mary Alice Watkins of Bellfontaine; nephew, Larry Williams of Columbus; brother-in-law, Jerry Dover of Phoenix; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Dover of Upper Arlington; and many friends, and his blue and gold macaw, Spice. MALLORY Prince E. Mallory, age 88, Saturday, August 3, 2002 at the Grant Medical Center. A member of New Zion Baptist Church. World War II Veteran. A retired employee of Screpco Electric. SHAMAN Reva Goldberg Shaman, age 91, after a long fight with Alzheimer's disease, died peacefully at Four Corners Health Center in Durango, Colo. on Sunday, August 4, 2002. Preceded in death by husband Sol D. Shaman of Columbus, Oh. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Marvin Dworkin of Durango, Colo.; grandchildren, Stacey and William Bie of Cincinnati, Oh., Davidah and Victor Groves of Denver, Colo. and Stephen Samuels of San Diego, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Mitchel and Reed Bie of Cincinnati, Oh. Reva and her husband, Sol Shaman, owned Topper Supply Company on South High Street for 30 years. Reva was confirmed from Temple Israel and remained, until her illness, a devoted and active member of the Sisterhood, Sunday School, and Temple Foundation. Reva was very proud of her civic affiliations and life memberships. Some of the more dearest to her were: B'nai Brith International, Hillel Foundation, Hadassah, Council of Jewish Women, Jewish War Veterans, Wexner Heritage Village, Jewish Historical Society, and the Jewish Community Center. She also supported community organizations such as The Ohio State University, City of Hope, Kidney Foundation, The Columbus Symphony, and the Cancer Society. Whenever Reva received a plea for help, she contributed gladly either by volunteering her services or financial gifts. Reva touched the lives of everyone she met and her legacy of gifts will remain to benefit the people of Columbus for many years. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 8, 2002 at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. TE PAS Kathryn E. Te Pas, 54, of Columbus, Oh., passed away Sunday, August 4, 2002 at her home. She was born January 15, 1948, a daughter of the late John "Tony" and Doris Te Pas. She was the dedicated unit director of Special Care Nursery, R.N.C. and N.M.P. at Mt. Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, Oh. She was founder and President of the Ohio K-9 Search Team, Inc. The Te Pas Training Fund has been established in her honor by the Ohio Federation of K-9 Search Teams. This fund will continually help improve search and rescue dogs and handlers in her honor. She was also a member of the Golden Retriever Club of America, Inc. and Columbus All Breed Training Club. She was also preceded in death by her sister Ellen Iddings Te Pas. She is survived by 2 brothers and their families, John A. (Judy) Te Pas of McDermott, Oh. and Paul E. (Donna) Te Pas of Murphy, N.C.; nieces, Autumn Te Pas of McDermott, Oh. and Lauren Te Pas of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; nephews, Joseph A. (Summer) Te Pas of McDermott, Oh. and Cody Te Pas of Murphy, N.C.; great-niece, Alexandra Te Pas Van Dyke of McDermott, Oh.; aunts, Eleanor Niekirk of Chapel Hill, N.C., Mary Helen Bodmer and Sarah Shannon of Portsmouth, Oh.; and many cousins and relatives. She devoted her life to helping and caring for others, thus, leaving behind many loyal and wonderful friends and will be sadly missed by all. VERHOFF Gregory J. Verhoff, age 56, died Saturday August 3, 2002 at home. Preceded in death by the mother of his children Karen Thinguldstad, his father Wilfred A. Verhoff and his nephew Brian Keaveney. Survived by his children, G. Joseph Verhoff and Heidi Verhoff; step-son, Michael Cligrow; mother, Anna M. Verhoff; brothers and sisters, Marcia A. Verhoff, Ronald F. Verhoff, Nancy L. Ray, Wilfred A. Verhoff II, Christine V. Lambert and Claire R. Six; nieces, nephews and many family and friends. WATSON Mrs. Roena Watson, age 70, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, August 3, 2002, surrounded by her loving family at Grant Medical Center. Born September 2, 1931 to the late King and Luella Sherfield in Cedartown, Ga. Best known as "Big Mom" to all those who loved her. Retired from Doctors Hospital North after 22 years of service. Roena went to greet her parents and brother James Sherfield on Saturday morning. She is survived by her lifelong love, companion and friend, Charles Almore; 5 loving children, Cynthia (Leroy), Charles, Harold, Michael and Patsy (Willie) Watson; aunts, Irene Sherfield, Estella Ware and Gladys Pace; 1 loving brother, Sylvester (Eve) Sherfield; sister-in-law, Linda Sherfield; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. YOUNG Charles "Chic" D. Young, age 89, of Upper Arlington, passed away at his home Sunday, August 4, 2002. Chic was born in Columbus on February 4, 1913 to the late, Morris and Nettie Young. He attended Central and South High Schools and received an Honorary Degree from Larry Mixon. Chic was owner and operator of Chick's Camera Exchange for 55 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ida May Young; son, Stephen (Sally) Young; daughter, Sondra (Tom) Abernathy; sisters, Ruth (Mort) Mutnick, Shirley (Joe) Rapapport, Rose (Al) Ross and Sarah Young; brothers, Martin (Bess) Young and Harold (Rita) Young; grandchildren, Lara Young, Tonya (Chris) Wilder, Stephen Young, Stacy Abernathy, Lynne (Craig) Murdick, Melinda (Don) Pippel and Megan Abernathy; and great-grandchildren, Madeline Pippel, Max Pippel, Carly Murdick, and Grace Murdick. In addition to his parents, Chic was preceded in death by his brother Sam Young and sister Marion Herman. Grandpa will be remembered for his wealth of knowledge, the love he had for his family, and for how much he enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed yet his spirit and determination will live on in all of us.

ASCHINGER Carl J. Aschinger, Sr. was born July 17, 1915, long time resident of Upper Arlington, most recently resident of First Community Village where he died Friday August 9, 2002. Preceded in death by parents W.F. Aschinger, Sr. and Katherine Aschinger, brother, W. F. Aschinger, Jr., sister, Dorothy A. Montgomery and wife of 61 years, Harriett B. (Pat) Aschinger. BARNES Miles R. Barnes, age 82, of Wilkins Township, Pittsburgh, Pa., died Thursday, August 8, 2002. He was a retired engineer from the Timken Corp. with over 43 years service. He was on the Board of Directors for the Pilot Dog Project in Columbus (Seeing Eye Dogs). Miles was a WW II U.S. Army veteran serving in the South Pacific. Member of East Columbus Lions and also the Masons. His family remembers him for his kindness and generosity, as he was truly a southern gentleman. Husband of Marian I. BLAKEY John Miller Blakey, died Thursday, August 8, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. He was the son of Edna M. Miller and Dr. Halbert B. Blakey, born August 24, 1910 in Columbus. His maternal grandfather, Orlando A. Miller was the founder of The Central Ohio Paper Co. and The Columbus Country Club. He attended the Columbus Academy and Williams College and served in the Pacific as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He retired as Chairman of Copco Papers in 1975 after a 43 year career at the company. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth Verity; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Charles Thompson; 4 grandchildren, Francesca and Blake Thompson, and E.V. and Annabelle Day. He was preceded in death by his daughter Verity Day. He was a member of The Columbus Country Club, Rocky Fork Hunt and Country Club, The Naples Yacht Club, The Royal Poinciana Club, and The Hole in the Wall in Naples, Fla. There will be a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2002 at Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 E. Broad St. Dr. David A. Van Dyke officiating.
