HIGGINS Kimberly Sue (Joyner) Higgins, age 36, of Middletown, Conn., formerly of Pataskala, passed away unexpectedly September 7, 2002 in London, England. Kim was a 1984 graduate of Watkins Memorial, an OSU graduate in 1989. Her father Thomas Dale Joyner preceded her in death. Survived by her husband of 15 years, James; sons, Nathan, 11 and Jordan, 8; mother, Leatrice Joyner; sisters, Theresa Snider, Angela (Wes) Williams, Cynthia (Andy) Morrow; brother, Thomas (Prem) Joyner; mother-in-law, Paula Higgins (James, deceased); brother-in-law, Scott (Jennifer) Higgins; sister-in-law, Jennifer (Matthew) Myers; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. KOEHL James Alan Koehl, age 32, died on Thursday September 5, 2002. Born in Columbus to Larry and Penny (Hicks) Koehl of Chandler, Arizona. He is survived by his parents; daughter, Jensen Zimmerman; his grandmother, Helen Koehl; and numerous other family members and friends. LANCASTER Donald Eugene Lancaster, age 89, 4301 Stoner Dr. Apt. 213, Grove City, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002 in Monterey Care Center, Grove City after a lengthy illness. He was born July 3, 1913 in Niles, Ohio the son of Floyd J. and Eva Ellen Utt Lancaster. He lived the last eight years of his life in Grove City and previously lived in Warren, Ohio for 16 years and Parkman, Ohio for 30 years. Mr. Lancaster was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grove City, Ohio. He was a member of the Parkman Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Lancaster earned a Boys Scouts of America Silver Beaver Leadership award and Boys Scouts of America Order of the Arrow award. He served many young men in the Boy Scouts. Mr. Lancaster also received the Red Cross Disaster Volunteer Outstanding Service award; and the Shepherd of the Valley six years of dedicated service award, where he also was on the Board of Managers. He also served as back-up manager for Grove Place, Grove City for 4 years. Survivors include his wife, Pearl Brown Lancaster whom he married March 30, 1940; a daughter, Pearlene Uhrin of Grove City; a son, Eugene Lancaster of Bristolville; four grandchildren, John Uhrin, Michele Buckingham (Uhrin), Mark Lancaster and Lynn Whitmore; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Henninger Jr. of Girard. He was preceded in death by two brothers Albert and Ted Lancaster, a sister Fayma Jones and a granddaughter Jill Lancaster. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2002 at Grovewood Place, 4301 Stoner Dr., Grove City, Ohio with the Pastor Donald Allman officiating from St. John's Lutheran Church in Grove City, Ohio. MATTOX Clyatt Mattox, 1913-2002. Farewell to our beloved mother and grandmother. "Gammy" you are in our hearts forever. NEESE Robert S. Neese, age 83, August 20, 2002 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, Mississippi. Bob was born March 27, 1919 in London, Ohio to the late Martha Shealor and Edward Smith Neese. Survived by sons, Tim Neese of Pensacola, FL and Michael Neese of Columbus, MS; daughter, Karen Tomlinson of Dallas, TX; sister, Mrs. Jim Jackson of Columbus, OH; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. He was a graduate of Grandview High School and attended Ohio State University until his enlistment in the armed forces. Veteran of WW II serving in the US Air Force. Columbus City School Board Member during the construction of Lee High School, now the Lee Middle School. Retired from Sanderson Plumbing and was a longtime member of the Columbus Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf with the Layabouts. He was also a charter member of the Lowndes County Chowder and Marching Society and St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and as Jr. Warden. Funeral service was held in Columbus, MS. Private interment Riverside cemetery, Troy, Ohio.

PARK Mary Etta Park, age 79, of New Albany passed on Thursday September 12, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. A devoted mother and grandmother. Preceded in death by husband Thomas J. Park, Jr., brother Marvin Slone, sisters Esta Staley and Ann Slone. Survived by daughters, Kandice (Brian) Wainer, Deborah (Richard) Miller; grandchildren, Ben (Dana) Wainer, Jessica Wainer, Amy (Max) Berry, Andrew Stumph, Vincent Miller; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Wainer; brothers, Tollie (Ruth Ann) Slone, Lenzie Slone, Hager Slone, James (Kathryn) Slone, Monroe (Eula) Slone, Jr. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna, where funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2002. PELPHREY Darlene (Sue) Pelphrey, age 63, of West Jefferson passed away Thursday, September 12, 2002 in Mt. Carmel West Hospital, Columbus. She was born August 8, 1939 in West Jefferson. She was a member of the First Baptist of West Jefferson, was employed with Kitchen's Cardinal Supermarket, a graduate of West Jefferson High School (1957), loved to sell Avon, was a member of the Euchre and Canasta Card Clubs. Survivors include husband of 45 years, James Pelphrey; children, Pamela J. (Dennis) Abrahams, Debra S. (James) Millar, Donald "Ed" (Theresa) Pelphrey; father, Donald M. Bradley; grandchildren, Tyler Abrahams, Jimmy and Jared Millar, Mitchel, Elaina, Grace, and Melanie Pelphrey; sister Doris J. Zollinger. Her mother Jessie M. Shrum Bradley preceded her in death. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday in the RADER-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, 1355 West Main Street, West Jefferson, with Rev. Glade May and Rev. Ron Tipton officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill cemetery, There will be a gathering of family and friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. PHILLIPS Gifford Bullock Phillips, age 74, Thursday, September 12, 2002 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Arrangements being completed by the TIDD FUNERAL HOME WITH CREMATORY, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard.

QUAY Robert Ford Quay, age 74, of Dublin on September 10, 2002. Preceded in death by wife of 50 years, Susan Leah (Shore). Survived by sons, Gary and his wife, Joyce, and Robert Jr.; daughters, Cheryl, Lori, and M. Lynn; grandchildren, Michael Short, Nick and Leah Quay; and extended family and dear friends. Starting in his teens as an auto mechanic, he rose throught 40 years of service with the Ford Motor Company to become a Service Director, then retired into his favorite job, driving a bus for the Dublin City Schools. His family wishes to thank all of you have touched his life through the years. A memorial service will be held at Unity Church of Christianity, 4211 Maize Road, Columbus at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. RETTER Richard Henry Retter, Jr., died Monday, September 9, 2002. He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Smythe Retter. SCHULTHEIS Joseph John Schultheis, age 87, of Columbus died Monday, September 9, 2002 at the Laurels of Norworth. Survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Helen; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Richard Nathan of Westerville; grandchildren, Daniel (Melissa) Nathan and Sharon Nathan; sister, Coletta Zehe of Fla. Veteran U.S. Army, WW II where he was a Bronze Star and Silver Star recipient and fought in the 26th Infantry Division from Algeria to The Rineland. Memorial service Wednesday 7:30 p.m. September 18, 2002 at the Vineyard Church of Columbus, 6000 Cooper Rd., Westerville, Ohio, Richard Nathan officiating, arrangements by SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL.

SMITH Colleen Morris Smith, 75, formerly Reynoldsburg, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2002 in Houston, Texas. Colleen is survived by her husband, Roy E. Smith; children, Morris Smith and Patricia McConnell; and grandchildren, Carolyn and Lauren. The funeral was held Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston. There will be a graveside service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson, SC on Saturday, September 14, 2002 at 3 p.m. Family and friends will gather at the home of Johnnie and Harriet Ramey, 1811 Lindale St., Anderson, SC after the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to their local Hospice organization in her memory.

STRIDER Luvenia M. "Topsy" Strider, age 86, passed away September 6, 2002. Retired from OSU Hospital, Upham Hall. Faithful member of Gospel Tabernacle Church until her illness. Preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Annie Ezzard and husband Homer Strider. Survived by sister, Dorothy Allen-Payton of Columbus; brother, Roger (Alma) Ezzard of Atlanta, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. THRUSH James Harold Thrush, age 59, of Columbus, OH passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2002 in Pedro, OH. James was born August 27, 1943 in Lancaster, OH the son of the late Paul Everett Thrush and Luella Thrush. He was a U.S. Marine veteran serving in Vietnam. He was a self-employed contractor, graduate of Central High School and attended Franklin University. He is survived by life partner, Darlene Jessup of Columbus; two daughters, Nicole Thrush and Kelly Benammar, both of Columbus, OH; one step-daughter, Kim Berube of Hollywood, FL; four grandchildren, Zachary Koesters, Patrick Koesters, Isabelle Benammar and Gabriel Berube. Service will be held at a later date and the convenience of the family. PHILLIPS FUNERAL HOME, 1004 So. 7th St., Ironton, OH is in charge of the arrangements.

UMBERGER Sarah L. Umberger, age 80, of Columbus died September 10, 2002 at Select Specialty Hospital at University Hospital East, after a lengthy illness. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was also a friend to countless teachers and schoolchildren, many of whom knew her simply as Miss Sarah” during her long career with Columbus Public Schools. Born April 26, 1922 in Blacksburg, VA, she graduated from Pulaski High School, Pulaski, VA, where she was a class leader. She and husband Daniel W. Umberger moved to Columbus in 1943. She began working as a school secretary at Chicago Avenue Elementary School in 1958. Later she became the secretary at Dana Avenue Elementary School, and retired in 1985. In addition to her husband of 61 years, she is survived by her son, Daniel W. Umberger, Jr. (Sue); daughter, Mary Umberger Kalnins (John Kalnins); grandchildren, Robert Umberger (Vanessa), Erin Umberger, Michael Kalnins, and Eric Kalnins; great-granddaughter, Mary Jayne Umberger; brothers, Frank J. Lugar, Jr. and Giles M. Lugar; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank J. Lugar and Dora Amburn Lugar. She was a long-time member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2480 West Broad Street, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, September 16. Pastors Tim Lee and Glenn Perry officiating. VAN BLARICOM FALOR Ann Elizabeth van Blaricon Falor, 90, widow of William H. Falor, M.D., died at her home in Akron, Ohio on Tuesday, September 10, 2002. Mrs. Falor was widely respected for her efforts benefitting medicine, education, and the natural and cultural environment. Born in Salem, Ohio she was a graduate of the Western Reserve University Bolton School of Nursing. She was recognized for her work as part of a medical team which demonstrated that the disease pellagra was treatable. She championed education for aspiring nursing and medical students at the University of Akron, Cast Western Reserve University and NEOUCOM. She was active in many civic and cultural organizations, especially emphasizing environmental, historic preservation, and urban beautification. She was a former president of the Akron Garden Club and vice president of Garden Club of America. Among the organizations in which she held board positions were the Akron Community Foundation, Summa Health Systems, Cuyahoga Valley Association, Sumner Home, Hower House, Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Summit County Historical Society, and the Ohio Environmental Council. She was a member of Portage Country Club, Akron Woman's City Club, and the Akron City Club. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Elizabeth and Larry J. Carducci of Auburn, Calif., William H. M.D., Jr. and Celeste Falor of Monterey, Calif., Stephen H. Falor of Columbus, Ohio, and Julia and E. Philip Jones of Greenwich, Conn.; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2002 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St. in Akron, Ohio with Dr. Clifford J. Hayes officiating.
