Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2002 at Pataskala United Methodist Church, 458 S. Main Street, Pataskala, OH with Rev. Ruben Cabanillas officiating. Mr. Osborn was born November 3, 1918 in Pataskala, OH to the late Raymond and Harriet Bittner Osborn. He was a lifetime farmer in the Pataskala Community and member of the Pataskala United Methodist Church. Survived by one son, Timothy (Janine) Osborn of Pataskala; one daughter, Nancy (David) Stafford of Waterville, OH; three grandchildren, Chris and Geoff Stafford and Spencer Osborn; one sister, Mary Black of Pataskala; several nieces and nephews. PARK Mary Etta Park, age 79, of New Albany passed on Thursday September 12, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. A devoted mother and grandmother. Preceded in death by husband Thomas J. PHILLIPS Gifford Bullock Phillips, age 74, of Dublin, Thursday Sept. 12, 2002 at The Ohio State Medical Center. Born April 9, 1928 to Lillian and Brady Phillips of Berwick, Penn. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran who served on the flagship of Admiral Richard Byrd in "Operation Deep Freeze" Antarctic expedition in 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Force on active sea duty off the Panama Canal. Gifford was a career-minded financial advisor working for various institutions during his 25+ years institutional sales. He was also a member of Columbus Manechor. He was a devoted father, husband and provider for his family. Gifford was predeceased by his beloved wife Donna Spell Phillips who he married in 1962 and his sister Geralda Newton of Columbus. He is survived by a large family including his sister, E.J. Boust of Omaha. Neb. and brother, Marlin Phillips of Warminister, Penn.; nieces and nephews, including Harriet and Brady Newton of Columbus, Ohio, Susan, Linda, Carol, and Bill Jr. Boust, and Mark, Debbie Phillips. He will be greatly missed by his friends, family and children, including his daughter, Denise of Marysville, Ohio and his sons, John of Denver, Colo. and Geoffrey of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughters-in-law, Laurie and Jill; and grandchidlren, Jason and Amanda. Gifford will be cremated and his ashes will be interred next to his wife's at the Wesley Chapel cemetery, 3225 Dublin Rd. QUAY Robert Ford Quay, age 74, of Dublin on September 10, 2002. Preceded in death by wife of 50 years, Susan Leah (Shore). Survived by sons, Gary and his wife, Joyce, and Robert Jr.; daughters, Cheryl, Lori, and M. Lynn; grandchildren, Michael Short, Nick and Leah Quay; and extended family and dear friends. Starting in his teens as an auto mechanic, he rose throught 40 years of service with the Ford Motor Company to become a Service Director, then retired into his favorite job, driving a bus for the Dublin City Schools. His family wishes to thank all of you have touched his life through the years. A memorial service will be held at Unity Church of Christianity, 4211 Maize Road, Columbus at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. RAINIER Harlan D. "Bud" Rainier, age 86, of Groveport, Friday, September 13, 2002 at the residence. Member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and Founder of Homestead Springs Golf Course. Survived by son, Joe (Mary Lou) Rainier of Groveport; grandchildren, Bruce (Marla) Rainier, June (Kevin) Porter, Steve (Jennifer) Rainier, Brett (Joan) Rainier, Rocky Rainier, Heather Carter; great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife Virginia and son Jack. Friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. RAMSEY John R. Ramsey, age 77, of Upper Arlington, died Friday, September 13, 2002 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2002 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12 noon – 1 p.m. If desired, contributions may be made to the Girl Scouts of America or a favorite charity in his memory. RAND Howard Rand, Sr., son of late parents George A. Rand, Sr. and Lillian Rand Stahl was born in Columbus, OH June 9, 1929. He passed September 10, 2002 at the Manor at Whitehall. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army. Howard attended Columbus Public Schools. He was an independent truck contractor with Wheaton Van Lines, Inc. when he was diagnosed with cancer in October 1989 while on duty in Gary, IN. For more than 10 years he managed a professional basketball team, "The Harlem Clowns", traveling throughout the country. More recently he turned to golf. Howard was predeceased by his parents, son Howard "Randy" Rand, Jr. who was also a member of his ball team, brothers and sister-in-law Robert and Irene Rand, George Rand Jr., brother-in-law Melvin Cherry, aunts Ophelia Ridgeway, Beatrice Lewis and Bertha Latimer, two uncles John Bond and Thomas Latimer. Loving and missing him, he is survived by sister, Mary "Betty" Cherry; brother, Jesse E. Rand of Plainfield, NJ; six nieces, 5 nephews; a host of great-nieces and nephews; cousins, Rev. & Mrs. Vurn O. Mullins, Lydia Short and Family, Wadsworth and Blackmon families of Indianapolis, IN, special group at Alum Creek White Castle, residents at Jenkins Towers and friends he played golf with. Service of memory, Sunday 7 p.m. chapel of DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long St. Rev. Victor Davis officiating. SMITH Colleen Morris Smith, age 75, of Houston, formerly of Columbus, OH, Anderson, SC and Surfside Beach, SC died Sept. 7, 2002 in Houston. Surviving are husband, Roy E. Smith of Houston; son, Morris Smith of Houston; Patricia McConnell of Pickens, SC; two grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday Sept. 12, 2002 at St. John The Devine Episcopal Church in Houston. STORY James Quinn Story, age 84, died peacefully at home on Wednesday afternoon September 11, 2002 surrounded by family. Born to Jonathan and Gertrude Story, May 30, 1918, Jim grew up in Chillicothe, then moved to Clintonville where he graduated from Columbus North High School. Receiving a full art scholarship, he attended Pratt Institute in New York City. Also attended OSU and CCAD. Jim was a longtime member of Player's Club Theatre and a writer of book reviews for local newspapers. He retired from Defense Construction Supply Center, for whom he traveled to Vietnam twice during the war and designed technical documents. Preceded in death by wife Jane, brother John. Survived by daughters, Sarah (David) Lindsay, Susan Lynch, Martha (Joe) Wolfe, and Mary Anne Story; sister, Elizabeth (John) Currier; grandchildren, James Benjamin, Joseph Quinn, David Mason, Kathryn Suzann, Taylor Cathleen, Elizabeth Corin and Ellen Marie. TURK Elizabeth Turk, of New York. Preceded in death by husband Oscar Jacob Turk and daughter Suzanne Turk-Keller. UMBERGER Sarah L. Umberger, age 80, of Columbus died September 10, 2002 at Select Specialty Hospital at University Hospital East, after a lengthy illness. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was also a friend to countless teachers and schoolchildren, many of whom knew her simply as Miss Sarah” during her long career with Columbus Public Schools. Born April 26, 1922 in Blacksburg, VA, she graduated from Pulaski High School, Pulaski, VA, where she was a class leader. She and husband Daniel W. Umberger moved to Columbus in 1943. She began working as a school secretary at Chicago Avenue Elementary School in 1958. Later she became the secretary at Dana Avenue Elementary School, and retired in 1985. In addition to her husband of 61 years, she is survived by her son, Daniel W. Umberger, Jr. (Sue); daughter, Mary Umberger Kalnins (John Kalnins); grandchildren, Robert Umberger (Vanessa), Erin Umberger, Michael Kalnins, and Eric Kalnins; great-granddaughter, Mary Jayne Umberger; brothers, Frank J. Lugar, Jr. and Giles M. Lugar; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank J. Lugar and Dora Amburn Lugar. She was a long-time member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2480 West Broad Street, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, September 16. Pastors Tim Lee and Glenn Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Millersport cemetery. Mr. White, a graduate of Millersport High School, died September 11, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. He was born October 12, 1976 in Newark, Ohio to Terry L. White and Norma (Fox) White of Millersport. He was a graduate of COTC and was employed at Discover Financial Services where he was a Senior Call Representative. He attended Millersport United Methodist Church and enjoyed photography, sports and all kinds of music. He was also an avid fan of Star Wars. In addition to his parents, he is survived by fiance, Amanda Munz of Jefferson, Ohio; sister, Kelly White of Millersport; maternal great-grandmother, Zelma Ford of Bowling Green, Ohio; maternal grandparents, Walter and Shirley Fox of Millersport; paternal grandmother, Helen (White) Brandt of Millersport; many aunts, uncles and cousins who survive. WILLIAMS Ina Hawk Williams, age 75, of New Bern, North Carolina died Thursday, September 12, 2002 at Craven Regional Medical Center. Mrs. William was a past member fo the Eastern Star. She is survived by husband, Fred B. Williams of the home; sons, Fred B. Williams of Sandy, Utah and David Sky of Bexley, Ohio; daughter, Helen Bayer of Havelock; brothers, Everett Hawk and Dick Hawk, both of Chillicothe, Ohio; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2002 at COTTEN FUNERAL HOME, 2201 Neuse Blvd., New Bern, NC 28560 with Rev. Ray Griffin officiating. WISE Carl Clifton Wise, 59, of Marysville died Friday morning, September 13 due to injuries received in an automobile accident near Milford Center. He was an employee of Premier of Marysville and a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church. He was a former member of the Marysville Jaycees, was an avid football fan, and enjoyed watching harness racing and playing golf. Carl was born September 25, 1942 in Marysville to Milton P. and Jennette Perry Wise. He is survived by his mother of Marysville and also by a sister Vivian M. Heil of Marysville; 2 brothers, Roy E. Wise of Marysville and Gary E. (Carol) Wise of Delaware; 3 nieces and 2 nephews; 5 great nieces and 3 great nephews; 3 aunts, one uncle and several cousins. A graveside memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 17 at St. John Lutheran Church cemetery. ADAMS Bernard Adams, age 81, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2002 at home. Born in Ashland, KY, and a professional carpenter for 35 years. Army veteran of WW II, serving 1942 to 1945. An avid hunter and fisherman, and a member of Southeast Conservation Club. He was a devoted family man, a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Preceded in death by wife Ida, grandson Jason Lee Adams, his parents, two sisters and one brother. Survived by daughters, Lois Fay (Bert) Cordle of Rockbridge, OH, Monnie (Rick) Copas, Bonnie (John "Jake") Sturgeon, both of Columbus, Kathryn (Larry) Bowshier of Ashville, OH; sons, Bernard Jr. (Patty), Leroy (Alonda), David "Doc" (Wanda), all of Columbus; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brothers, Chester (Geneva) Adams, Fred (Jean) Adams; sister, Toad (Eldon) Rodgers, Helen (Ira) Chaffin, Madge Simpson; many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors. ANDERSON Jacob W. "Jake" Anderson, age 92, of Thornville, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Rockmill Rehabilitation Centre in Carroll, Ohio. Born October 30, 1909 in Pike County to the late Mark and Alice (Soale) Anderson, he was a member of the Fairfield Beach United Methodist Church and 55 Plus Club, longtime member of the Fairfield Beach Property Owners Assn. and was retired as owner of D.J. Meats and from the meat cutters union. Survivors include sons, James (Betty) of Plain City, David (Bette) of Columbus and Paul of Grove City; daughters, Diane Jones and Willard Drake, Denise (John) Chrysler, both of Thornville and Patricia (Arthur) Perry of Texas; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and brother, Roy (Patricia) Lancaster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Virginia (Buzby) Anderson and brothers Nevil, Frank and Ellsworth. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Fairfield Beach United Methodist Church with Pastor Thomas Beckett officiating.
