Phyllis C. Gregg
Sycamore native

Phyllis C. Gregg, 88, of Milan, Mich., formerly of Ottawa Lake, Mich., died Sunday evening, March 21, 1999, in the Provincial House, Adrian, Mich.

She was born Feb. 20, 1911, in Sycamore, to Ervie R. and Laura L. (Ingman) Hoover. On Oct. 3, 1936, in Toledo she married William Ried Gregg, who died Feb. 23, 1995.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Stephen Gregg of Milan; two grandchildren, John and Laura; a sister, Jule Patrick of Odessa, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Georgia Stubbs, also is deceased.

Mrs. Gregg was a member of the Olivet Lutheran Church and Music Makers Organ Club, both of Toledo.

Services were Wednesday in the Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan, with burial following in Toledo Memorial Park.

Visitation was Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Adrian College in her memory.

Alice Paulus
Former Tiffin resident

Word has been received of the death of Alice Paulus, formerly of Tiffin and Westerville, and most recently of Las Vegas, Nev.

She was born in the Netherlands to the late Anko and Geezina Ryskamp. Her husband, Paul B. Paulus, whom she married June 19, 1941, preceded her in death in 1981.

Survivors include: children, Anita Alexander of Denver, Colo., Dr. Paul Paulus of Arlington, Texas, Mrs. Michael (Ann) Cummock of Las Vegas; Dr. John Paulus of Westerville and Michael Paulus of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Ryskamp of Sarnia, Ontario; and a sister, Jai Wiersema of Loppersum, the Netherlands.

The Paulus family came to Tiffin in 1957 through the sponsorship of the First Presbyterian Church of Tiffin and moved to Westerville in 1962 to administer the Elmhurst Convalescent Center. During the second World War, the family, while still in Holland, hid a Jewish family in their home during the Nazi invasion of Holland. Mrs. Paulus was awarded the Yad Vashem Medal from Israel.

Services were March 7 in the Central Presbyterian Church, Westerville.

Cleo O. (Sweazy) Barstow
Fostoria resident

Cleo O. (Sweazy) Barstow, 79, formerly of 652 Stinchcomb St., Fostoria, more recently of 725 Columbus Ave., Fostoria, died at 2:15 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

She was born Aug. 12, 1919, to Porter and Myrtle (Howart) Sweazy. On March 14, 1937, she married Elwood E. Barstow. He is deceased.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Fritz (Beverly) Matthews of Fostoria; a grandson, Craig Matthews; a granddaughter, Mrs. Doug (Kimberly K.) Gohringer; a sister, Darlie Pritchard of Columbus and a great-grandchild, Cassalyn Rae Gohringer.

Preceding her in death were: a brother, Ben Sweazy; two sisters, Vivian Fierce and Audrey Goddard.

Mrs. Barstow was a floor supervisor for the Dobson-Evans School, Columbus, for 29 years.

The Rev. Branson J. Hawkes will officiate the 11 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 1999, Memorial Service at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Fostoria. Burial will be at Union cemetery, Columbus.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to Wesley Village, 608 Stinchcomb, Fostoria, OH 44830.

Maxine 'Jessie' Lykins
Sycamore homemaker

Maxine "Jessie" Lykins, 62, of 328 Kilbourne St., Sycamore, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25, 1999, in her residence. She was born Feb. 3, 1937, to Johnie M. and Edna M. (Watson) Dunaway. Both are deceased. On July 11, 1954, she married Billie R. Lykins Sr.; he survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Billy Lykins Jr. of Upper Sandusky, Michael Lykins of Sycamore and David Lykins of Upper Sandusky; two daughters, Mrs. Randall (Theresa) Harper of rural Sycamore and Mrs. Robbin Mitchem of Sycamore; a sister, Mrs. Avanell Hinton of Kentucky; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, a sister;and a granddaughter.

Mrs. Lykins was a homemaker and member of the following: Protestant faith; Moose Lodge, Fremont; former member VFW, Bucyrus #1078; AMVETS Post 27, Bucyrus; Bucyrus American Legion Post; Tiffin Sewing & garden clubs; Jackson Perkins Rose Club, Dearborn, Mich.

The Rev. Edgar W. Shelly will officiate the funeral at 1 p.m. Monday at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Burial will be at Pleasant View cemetery, Sycamore.

Visitation hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret G. Day Brown
Former Bloomville resident

Margaret G. Day Brown, 83, formerly of Bloomville, more recently of Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin, died at 3:15 p.m., Thursday, March 25, 1999. She was born Aug. 21, 1915, to the late Charles D. and Lenora G. (Barnthouse) Mott.

Mrs. Brown was married in February 1934 to Ed Day. He died in May 1953. She was married in February 1955 to Roy Brown. He died in March 1977.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. David (Delores J.) Myers of Baytown, Texas, Mrs. Eurie (DeLee) Brewer Heard of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Paul (Lenora) Thompson of Bloomville and Mrs. Darla Conner of Montgomery, Ala.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Don (Nina) Shrader of Willard and Mrs. Lorainne Groves of Bucyrus; two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Virginia) Mahl of Monroeville and Mrs. Letha Heorig of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are two brothers, Herlis and Clyde Mott, and a sister, Olive Gangluff.

Mrs. Brown attended Attica schools, and worked as a cook at Truck Haven for many years. She also was a nursing aide at Bloomville Nursing Home, worked at the G.E. plant in Bellevue and attended Bloomville United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Lindsey-Kocher Funeral Service, Willard, with the Rev. Gary A. Hick of the Bloomville United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery, Willard.

Visitation hours will be 10-11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Autumnwood care Center Piano Fund through the funeral home.

John C. Hunt
Career U.S. Army sergeant

John C. Hunt, 70, of Lowell, Mass., and the husband of Florence (Coriea) Hunt, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Saints Memorial Medical Center, Lowell Mass.

Born in Fostoria Jan. 23, 1929, to the late William and Cleo Hunt, he attended school in Fostoria and Wayne, Ohio. As a youth, he was active in scouting and attained Eagle Scout.

A career member of the U.S. Army, he had a distinguished service record that spanned 22 years. He served in Vietnam as a combat infantryman with the rank of sergeant first class and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Sharpshooters Badge. During his career, he also served overseas in Korea and Germany, and was stationed at Fort Devens, Mass., and at Fort Dix, NJ.

Besides his wife, Florence, he is survived by four daughters, Doren Vieira of Lowell, Michelle Witts of Dracut, Mass., Maryann Hunt and Lisa Motard, both of Lowell; a son, John C. Hunt Jr. of Dracut; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Frances Lambright, Mrs. Richard (Rosalie) Haneberg, both of Fostoria, and Mrs. Ray (Virginia) Mathews of Tiffin; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were at the O'Donnell Funeral Home in Lowell March 13, followed by a funeral Mass at the St. Anthony Church. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery, Lowell.

Lester R. 'Doc' Speaker
Clyde resident

Lester R. "Doc" Speaker, 76, of Prospect Street, Clyde, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at St. Charles Hospital, Oregon, Ohio.

Mr. Speaker, a truck driver for BMI Transportation in Genoa, was born Dec. 13, 1922, to Harley J. and Velma E. (Boyer) Speaker, both deceased. On March 11, 1965, he married Margaret Meyer. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons and four daughters: James Speaker of Tiffin, Tris Speaker of Elmore, Ronald Conner of Clyde, Sandra Garrett of Troy, Ala., Mrs. George (Lisa) Staton of Oregon, Mrs. Gerald (Teresa) Mesnard and Mrs. William (Peggy) Mesnard, both of Clyde; two sisters: Mrs. Margie Scovill of Michigan and Mrs. Nell Enright of Port Clinton; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Cloyce, Harold and John Speaker, and five sisters, Betty Croyle, Marie Helvoight, Harleen Wickard, Phylis Shaffer and Edna McClean.

The Rev. David Mills will officiate the 1:30 p.m. today graveside services at the Fairmont cemetery in Tiffin.

There will be no visitation, The Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home of Clyde is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Sandusky County Home Health Care in Fremont or donor's choice.

Janet L. Maye
Bellevue Schools cook

Janet L. Maye, 77, of Sandusky CR 262, Clyde, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at Bellevue Hospital, Bellevue.

She was born an only child Dec. 11, 1921, in York Township to William and Mildred R. (Dymond) Oswald, both deceased. On July 5, 1941, she married James E. Mayes.

She is survived by her husband and three sons, Leigh Maye, Jean Maye and Noel A. Maye, all of Clyde.

A graduate of Clyde High School in 1938, Mrs. Maye was employed by Bellevue Schools as a cook. She was a member of the Sandusky County Kin Hunters.

The 10 a.m. Monday services at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church will be officiated by the Rev. David Vensel and the Rev. Mark Reep. Burial will be at McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Family will meet friends at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Building Fund or The American Cancer Society.

Michael Judson Williams
President, Gross Manufacturing

Michael Judson Williams, 61, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in El Paso, Texas, after a prolonged battle with leukemia.

Mr. Williams lived in Sylvania from 1964 to 1980; he was president of Gross Manufacturing, a Toledo business.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nanette Williams; son, Michael J. Williams Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; daughters, Katheryn Alexander and Lynn Maestas of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a sister, Dr. Karen Morse of Bellingham, Wash.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Martin Funeral Home West, El Paso.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Bone Marrow Donor Program, the American Cancer Society, or the El Paso Opera.

Robert Joseph Burgh Jr.
Tiffin Resident

Robert Joseph Burgh, Jr., 73, of 686 S. Sandusky St., died at 8:24 a.m. Friday, March 26, 1999, at the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born March 13, 1926, in Boston, Mass., to Robert Joseph Sr. and Virginia (Tubby) Burgh, both deceased. On April 14, 1979, he married Lois M. (Beitel) Orwig. She survives.

He is preceded in death by a son, Everett Burgh, and brother, Bruce Victoria.

Surviving are a son, Robert Joseph Burgh III of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Lanny (Barbara) Henderson and Mrs. Larry (Vicki) Wood, both of Canton, Mich.; stepchildren, Steven Orwig of Cleveland, Mrs. John (Diane) Thom and Glenn M. Orwig, both of Tiffin; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Burgh, a retired sales manager of Wayne Hall Dodds of Wayne, Mich., was a member of St. Mary's Church of Wayne and a lifetime member of AMVETS and VFW. He served in the U.S. Navy - Seabees with three years in the South Pacific during World War II.

A private funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Rob Breitigam at 11 a.m. Monday at Turner-Engle Funeral Home of Tiffin, with interment at Greenlawn cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to donor's choice.

William Homer Kelly
Father of Tiffin resident

William Homer "Ric" Kelly, 96, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at St. Francis Home.

He was born Sept. 17, 1902, in Frederick, Okla., to Samuel and Fanny May (Hendrick) Kelly. On Oct. 15, 1925, he married Hazel Easterday.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Davis of Tiffin, six grandsons, a granddaughter, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kelly had been president of the Wichita, Kan., Business Men's Association, personnel director of Beech Aircraft in Wichita, manager of the Green Valley, Ariz., Retirement Community, and manager of numerous motels in Los Angeles.

Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, with burial to be in Wichita, Kan.

Curtis W. Keller
Farmer/insurance agent

Curtis W. Keller, 76, of 1464 SR 4 South, Attica, died Friday evening, March 26, 1999, in the Med Central Mansfield Hospital.

He was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Reed Township, Attica, to Otto and Eugenia (Waire) Keller. On Jan. 19, 1946, in Attica, he married June Meyers, who survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Stephen of Gahanna and Kevin of Maryville; four grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Neil (Ruth) Vogt of Attica.

Mr. Keller, a long-time Attica-area resident, was a farmer and an insurance agent.

He attended Tiffin University until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a fighter pilot in the 15th Air Force.

A former Attica School Board member for a number of years, he also was a member of Attica United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Attica-Venice cemetery, with the Rev. Thom Kalb officiating.

There will be no visitation. The Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the church or Attica EMS Rescue Squad.
