Dewey Smith Jr.
Atlas Crankshaft retiree

Dewey Smith Jr., 77, of Fostoria, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, June 1, 1999, in Fostoria.

He was born in Wallace, W.Va., Jan. 30, 1922, to Dewey G. and Lizzie (Dye) Smith. His wife, Betty Ann (Householder) Smith, whom he married Jan. 24, 1942, in Piqua, survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: two sons, David L. Adams-Smith of Chicago, Ill., and Steven L. Smith of Fostoria; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Vicki) Marshall of Orrville; a brother, Cap Smith of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; two sisters, Eunice Hamilton and Mrs. Lou (Naomi) Wirebaugh, both of Elmore; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A 1940 graduate of Fostoria High School, Mr. Smith retired in August 1986 as a gauge and tool inspector from Atlas Crankshaft, Fostoria, after 40 years.

He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, Fostoria, and UAW Local 336, where he had served as past financial secretary.

The Rev. Jeffrey Waite will conduct the 10:30 a.m. Friday service in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, near Arcadia,l where military graveside services will be provided by the United Veterans of Fostoria.

Visitation at the funeral home is 6-8 p.m. today and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Seneca County Hospice, 182 St. Francis Ave., Rear Suite, Tiffin, OH 44883; High Street Methodist Church, 243 W. High St., Fostoria, OH 44830; or the Seneca County Cancer Society, 143 E. Perry St., Tiffin, OH 44883.

Anthony Charles Rini, M.D.
Retired Clyde physician

Anthony Charles Rini, M.D., 86, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at his residence at Sandusky CR 223, Clyde.

He was born in Cleveland Feb. 1, 1913, to Nick C. and Vincenza (LoSchlavo) Rini. On May 7, 1960, he married Gail Compton. She survives.

Survivors also include: three sons, Anthony Rini of Lynchburg, Va., Eric Rini of Pickerington and Gary Rini of Harrisburg, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Gail) Payne of Clyde; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a brother, Nicholas J. Rini of San Gabriel, Calif.

Two sisters, Marian Connley and Margaret Carlozzi; and three brothers, Joseph, Gus and Martin Rini; are deceased.

Dr. Rini, a physician in Clyde since 1947, served on the staff at Fremont Memorial Hospital until 1987, and as chief of staff in 1972.

A 1931 graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, he received a bachelor's degree in 1935 from Western Reserve University and a bachelor's degree in medicine in 1939 from the University of Cincinnati. He did his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, 1939-40, received a doctor of medicine in 1940; served at the Ravena Arsenal as a physician 1941-44; and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps 1944-46. He served his residency at Grace Hospital, Cleveland, 1946-47.

Dr. Rini was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clyde; the Sandusky County Medical Society, Sandusky County Board of Health for 19 years, where he also served as medical director.

A Clyde School team physician for 37 years, he received the Outstanding Support for Youth at the Clyde-Green Springs Schools in 1986; the Clyde Business and Professional Association's Outstanding Service to the Clyde Community in 1987 and along with his wife, Gail, received the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award in 1983.

A funeral Mass in St. Mary's Catholic Church will be at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Jeff Newhaus as celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Clyde American Legion and VFW.

Visitation will be at 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:45.

Memorials may be made to Sandusky County Hospice, the Alzheimer's Association or St. Mary's School, Vine Street, Clyde.

Lydia E. Schall
Mother of county residents

Lydia E. Schall, 83, formerly of Fort Seneca, a resident of the Bethesda Care Center, Fremont for the past four years, died there at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 1999.

She was born in Liberty Township, Seneca County, May 11, 1919, to John and Georgia (Rau) Bowers. Her first husband, Ed Snell, is deceased. She later married Ernest Schall, who also is deceased.

Survivors include: two sons, Carl Edward Snell of Marion and Paul Snell of Bettsville; four daughters, Nancy Bailey of Jasper, Ala., Karen Zerman of Clyde, Sharon Gamble of Toledo and Florence Warnick of Tiffin; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carl Bowers of Hopkinsville, Ky.

A homemaker, Mrs. Schall was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Bettsville, and the Senior Citizens, Tiffin. She had attended the Bettsville Schools.

The Rev. Mike Starkey will be the officiant at the 1:30 p.m. Thursday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Union cemetery, Old Fort.

Visitation is at 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church, Bethesda Care Center or a charity of the donor's choice.

Gertrude Wisebaker
Mother of Tiffin resident

Word has been received of the death of Gertrude Wisebaker, 85, of Santa Cruz, Calif., who died Monday, May 31, 1999.

Surviving are a daughter, Marguerite Bridinger of Santa Cruz; a son, Robert, of Tiffin; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Beatrice Thelma Robenalt
Retired Castle Center manager

Beatrice Thelma Robenalt, 90, formerly of 466 N. Sandusky St., died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999, in St. Catherine's Care Center, Tiffin.

She was born in Townwood, Ohio, Nov. 11, 1908, to Virgil and Mary (Pingle) Haner. On Dec. 31, 1947, in Tiffin, she married Edward J. Robenalt, who died in 1989.

Surviving are: a son, Norman Twining of Tiffin; two sisters, Mrs. George (Eileen) Sahadi of Arizona and Mrs. Frank (Marjorie) Kocour of Sand Lake, Ariz.; a brother, Frank Haner of Tavares, Fla.; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Mrs. Robenalt retired in 1972 as manager of the Castle Center at Heidelberg College.

Services in the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Dr. Robert Buckley officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home is at 6-8 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to St. Catherine's Care Center, Tiffin.

Irene M. Swartz
Homemaker/former school cook

Irene M. Swartz, 73, died at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 1999, at her residence at 194 Seventh Ave.

She was born in Pandora Oct. 30, 1925, to George and Lavina (Schaffer) Eck. Her husband, Roger J. Swartz, whom she married March 11, 1946, in Findlay, survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Duane (Judy) Kern of West Millgrove and Linda Swartz of Fostoria; three sons, Glenn Swartz of Elmore, Dale Swartz of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bill Swartz of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ila Vitte of Fremont and Mrs. Richard (Evelyn) Otto of Ada.

Two brothers, Harlan and Russel Eck, are deceased.

Mrs. Swartz, a homemaker, also had been employed as a cook at Hopewell-Loudon School and the School of Opportunity.

A 1943 graduate of Pandora-Gilboa High School, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in the Seneca County/Fostoria area.

The Rev. Gary Halstead will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Saturday graveside service in Weaver cemetery, Eagleville Road, North Baltimore.

Visitation will start at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice and the church.

William 'Billie' E. Dayton
Resident of Tiffin

William "Billie" E. Dayton, 44, of 221 Wentz St., died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 1999. He was born Feb. 27, 1955, in Tiffin to Warren W. and Lucille (Waire) Dayton. Both survive in Tiffin.

Other survivors include aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Dayton is a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ. He enjoyed his time with his grandparents.

The Rev. William H. Smith will officiate the 2 p.m. Saturday service at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmont cemetery.

Visitation hours are from noon Saturday until time of service.

Memorials may be made to Trinity U.C.C. or Community Time Service.

Viola Whitten
Retired Essex Wire employee

Viola Whitten, 82, of Columbus Ave., Fostoria, formerly of Buckley Street, died at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Fostoria. She was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Boonsville, Ky., to Granville and Fairendia (Spencer) Johnson. On April 6, 1940, she married Elmore E. Whitten. He died Feb. 5, 1974.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Theodore (Marlene) Elioff of Pickerington; a brother, George Johnson of Indiana; two sisters, Loraine Thomas and Ruth Thomas, both of Cincinnati; and a grandchild, Mrs. Joe (Angela) Elioff-Grasso of New Jersey.

Preceding her in death were: parents; husband; a brother, Everett Johnson; and a sister, Ellen Taylor.

Mrs. Whitten retired from the Essex Wire Co. of Carey. A member of the Fostoria Baptist Church, Fostoria; VFW Ladies Auxiliary; and Geary Family YMCA, she also loved swimming and gardening.

The Rev. David Chapman will officiate the 11 a.m. Monday service at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be at Greenville cemetery, Columbus.

Visitation hours are from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Fostoria Baptist Church.

Lewis Charles Ulrich
Retired farmer

Lewis Charles Ulrich, 82, of 12871 CH 47, Upper Sandusky, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo. He was born Aug. 3, 1916, to Frank and Hilda E. (Althouse) Ulrich. On Feb. 13, 1943, he married Dorothy Pfeifer. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Franklin H. Ulrich of Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Rita) Bennett of Tiffin; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ulrich was a 1935 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and a retired farmer. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and served on church council. Other memberships included: Mifflin Grange; Wyan-dots Camping Club; Farm Bureau; 7th degree Member National Grange; and the Indian Mill Antique Association.

Private visitation and funeral were May 27.

The Rev. Robert Gordon will officiate the memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Lutheran Church, Upper Sandusky. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Bringman-Clark & Co. Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church memorial Fund and/or Gottfried Nature Center.

G. Sam Sanfilippo
Tiffin Scenic Studios employee

G. Sam Sanfilippo, 65, of 205 Siesta Drive, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at the Autumnwood Care Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1933, to Thomas and Elizabeth "Bettie" (Cain) Sanfilippo, both deceased. On Dec. 29, 1962, he married Judith Ann Munn. She died May 5, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas D. Sanfilippo of Cambridge, Mass., and Paul S. Sanfilippo of San Fransisco, Calif.

Mr. Sanfilippo was active in the community theater, directing and acting in many stage productions. He had been director of the Youngstown Playhouse; managing director of the Del Ray Playhouse, Del Ray Beach, Fla.; managing director of Anderson Community Theatre of Anderson, S.C. He also was a licensed commercial pilot, coin collector and computer hobbyist.

Mr. Sanfilippo was a New Castle High School graduate. He also graduated from Youngstown State University. He worked as a salesman for Tiffin Scenic Studios. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he fought in the Korean War.

Mr. Sanfilippo's wife, Judith Ann (Munn), a resident of St. Catherine's Nursing Home of Tiffin, died on Wednesday, May 5, 1999. A combined memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Sanfilippo will be at 11:30 a.m Tuesday at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

The Rev. Amy E. Shaw will officiate the funeral service. Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery, Toledo.

Visitation hours are from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Ralph Dwight Jackson
Retired Standard Oil employee

Ralph Dwight Jackson, 78, of 461 W. Lytle St., 181, Fostoria, died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at St. Catherine's Care Center, Fostoria. He was born Dec. 4, 1920, to Ralph R. and Blanche (Angle) Jackson. He married Carolyn Powell; they divorced.

Survivors include: a stepson, James Powell of Toledo; a stepdaughter, Sue Keegan of Carey; long time companion, Geraldine Buckner; and seven step-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was a sister, Gweneth Lambert.

Mr. Jackson was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II in submarines 1941-1947. He retired from Standard Oil as pipeline pump station operator. Life memberships included: American Legion Post 73; VFW Post 421; Eagles Aerie 430; and United Sportsman, all of Fostoria.

The graveside funeral will be at 11 a.m. June 10 at Sugar Ridge cemetery, Leipsic. Military rites will be conducted by United Veterans Council of Fostoria. The Hartley Funeral Home of McComb is handling the arrangements.

Pauline Clara Hohman
Retired Kroger cashier

Pauline Clara Hohman, 79, formerly of 211 Coe St., died at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999, in St. Francis Home.

She was born in Tiffin, Jan. 16, 1920, to Otto and Rose (Smith) Elchert. On Oct. 21, 1942, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, she married Sylvan Hohman, who preceded her in death April 20, 1978.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Marion (Virginia) Weaver of Tiffin; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Keefe of Tiffin and Evelyn Gerten of Tecumsch, Mich.; two grandchildren, Kathleen Oliver and Elizabeth Weaver; and two great-grandchildren.

Four brothers, Richard, Ivan, Reuben and Eugene Elchert, and three sisters, Myrtle Kenan, Sister Celine (Charlotte), OSF, and Bernadine Huss, also are deceased.

Mrs. Hohman, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Rosary Altar Society, retired as a cashier from Tiffin Kroger Co.

An avid card and bingo player, she also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Catholic Knights of Ohio, New Riegel.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, where the rosary will be recited 15 minutes prior to the Mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home will be at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
