Sylvester A. Tiell
Retired farmer/stock hauler

Sylvester A. "Junior" Tiell, 75, of 13357 CH 4, Carey, died at his residence at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000.

He was born in Tiffin, Nov. 19, 1924, to Sylvester A. and Lucy C. (Wagner) Tiell. His wife, Arlene M. (Longanecker) Tiell, whom he married Oct. 11, 1947, in the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Carey, survives.

Survivors also include: six daughters, Mrs. Nicklaus (Ruth) Reier of Upper Sandusky, Mrs. Donald (Donna) Welly of Whispering Pines, N.C., Mrs. Wayne (Christine) Posey of Fostoria, Mrs. Dennis (Janet) Zoeller of Upper Sandusky, Mrs. Donald (Karen) Kimbler of Carey and Carol Tiell of Sandusky; 15 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter M. Tiell of Toledo and Florian Tiell of New Riegel; and a sister, Mrs. Catherine Roth of Clyde.

Preceding him in death were: a son, Ronald W. Tiell; a grandson, Jamie Tiell; a brother, Mark A. Tiell; and a sister, Ethel Gase.

Mr. Tiell, a retired farmer and lime and stock hauler, owned S.A. Tiell and Son Trucking. He also worked at National Lime and Stone in Carey for 18 years, retiring in 1975.

A Salem Township trustee for 12 years, he also was employed as a bus driver for Angeline School in Wyandot County.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salem Township, Upper Sandusky; American Legion Post 344, Carey; Wyandot County Sportsman Club and the Thursday Night Men's Bowling League, Carey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Ernest Waechter as celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the local American Legion.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County, Wyandot County Home Health or the church.

Martha J. Marchman
Tiffin resident's sister

Martha J. Marchman, 84, of Fremont, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Memorial Hospital, Fremont.

She was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Muncie, Ind., to Emmet and Elsie (Fields) Dawson. She married Watt Marchman, Nov. 27, 1963, in Hayes United Methodist Church, Fremont. He died Oct. 10, 1983.

Surviving are: a step-son, David Marchman of Green Springs; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Ray F. Dawson of Winterpark, Fla.; and two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Evalyn) Roberts of Tiffin and Mrs. Eugene (MIriam) Gillig of Findlay.

A daughter, Susan McGrain, also is deceased.

Mrs. Marchman, a member of numerous Fremont civic organizations, had worked at the former Ohio Bell Telephone office in Tiffin.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Barnes Memorial Chapel at Greenlawn cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The obituary is a courtesy of the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Fremont, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Bernice Mae Hoover
Tiffin homemaker

Bernice Mae Hoover, 94, formerly of 686 S. Sandusky St., died at 11:31 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in Autumnwood Care Center, where she had resided for the past seven years.

She was born March 9, 1905, in Tiffin, to George and Rella (George) Perrine. She first married Floyd Altman. Her second husband, Darl E. Hoover, is deceased.

Survivors include: a son, Ronald G. Altman of Cleveland; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were: a son, Robert A. Altman, who died in 1968; three brothers, Kenneth "Pete," Harold and Rolla Perrine; and two sisters, Alice Krug and Magadeline Zebeck.

Mrs. Hoover, a homemaker, had lived most of her life in the Tiffin area.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alonzo B. Wise officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery.

Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. Monday until time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice or Autumnwood Care Center.

Lester W. Fruth
Insurance agency co-owner

Lester W. Fruth, 78, of Van Buren Street, Fostoria, died at 7:32 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Fostoria.

He was born in Fostoria, Nov. 8, 1921, to Dr. Harold and Margaret (Ward) Fruth. His wife, Susan (Gardner) Fruth, whom he married Aug. 14, 1944, in the Harvard Chapel, Cambridge, Mass., survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a son, Stephen Fruth of Fostoria; two daughters, Catharine Bourgeois of Worthington and Mrs. Donald (Susan) Burger of Parker, Colo.; a sister, Eileen Ward Fruth of Tiffin; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Fruth, a 1939 graduate of Fostoria High School, retired in 1996 as co-owner and operator of Cameron, Fruth and Green Insurance Agency in Fostoria.

A 1943 graduate of Miami University with a bachelor's degree in business, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Fostoria, where he served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher.

He also served as past master of Fostoria Lodge 288 Free and Accepted Masons, past high priest of Garfield Chapter 150 Royal Arch Masons, past illustrious master of Fostoria Council 90 Royal and Select Masons, past commander of Fostoria Commandery 62, and member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo 32 degree Mason, Zenobia Shrine of Toledo, past president of Fostoria Shrine Club, past treasurer of Fostoria Temple Co. and "Knights of the York Cross of Honor."

A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he also was a member of the Fostoria Kiwanis Club, where he was past president, honorary life member and 50 year member, served as past division chairman of the Fostoria United Way and also was a member of the Fostoria Country Club, VFW and American Legion, all of Fostoria.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 in First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Edson Reed officiating. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, where Masonic memorial services will be at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church or Shrine Children's Hospitals.

Catherine M. Runion
Former grocery store owner

Catherine M. "Kate" Runion, 94, 7 Beechwood Drive, formerly of Tomb Street, died at 12:37 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin, where she had been a patient for about 10 days.

She was born in Tiffin, Oct. 2, 1905, to Frank and Elizabeth (Brinkman) Mitchell. On April 24, 1924, in Monroe, Mich., she married Henry O. "Pete" Runion, who preceded her in death Nov. 28, 1957.

Survivors include: three sons, Richard E. and Lloyd R. Runion, both of Tiffin, and Mervel E. "Gene" Runion of Charlottesville, Va.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

A brother, Mervel C. Mitchell, preceded her in death.

A seamstress, Mrs. Runion was the owner/operator of Runion Grocery Store, retiring after 30 years of service.

She was a member of First Christian Church and its Women's Fellowship Group and had served as deacon and treasurer of the Co-Workers Sunday School Class.

The Rev. Alonzo B. Wise will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Monday service in Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Lloyd A. Shoup
North Central Electric lineman

Lloyd A. Shoup, 60, of 3335 Austin Drive, Willard, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Mercy Hospital, Willard.

He was born in Attica, July 4, 1939, to the late Alfred and Vada Shoup. His wife, Kathryn Shoup, survives.

Survivors also include: a step-son, Douglas Hillis of Fremont; two step-daughters, Beverly Baylor of Willard and Connie Eldridge of New Haven; five step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Freeland of Norwalk and Janice Shepherd of Eugene, Ore.; four nephews and four nieces and a close friend.

A sister, Willene Ehrman, and a nephew, also are deceased.

Mr. Shoup, who had lived in Willard the past 31 years, had been employed as a lineman for North Central Electric in Attica.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Willard, and enjoyed helping at the Attica Fair and Attica Raceway.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Secor Funeral Home, Willard, with the Rev. Kent Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Willard.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

M. Reed Zimmerman
Clothing company retailer

M. Reed Zimmerman, 85, of 501 Short Elm St., Fostoria, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Independence House, Fostoria.

He was born Nov. 6, 1914, in Jackson Township, to Mervin and Ida (Bonawit) Zimmerman. His wife, Betty Gene (Neiman) Zimmerman, whom he married June 30, 1940, in Fostoria, survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Sharon Fay Zimmerman of Columbus and Joan Hoye of Columbia, Md.

Mr. Zimmerman, who enjoyed traveling, picture framing and gardening, had been employed as a retailer for the Mose Lamfrom Clothing Co. in Fostoria for 26 years, owning the business 1955 until his retirement in 1973.

He also worked as an accountant for General Electric 1939-47 in Schenectady, N.Y.

He was a former member of the Fostoria Kiwanis Club, where he served as president in 1952 and secretary in 1962.

A 1932 graduate of Fostoria High School, where he served as class officer, he was active in Boy Scouts and was a committee member of the Seneca District of the Put-Han-Sen Council.

He received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1939 from the Ohio State University College of Commerce. While at OSU he was president of the Beta Gamma Sigma National Commerce Honors Fraternity, president of the Beta Alpha Psi National Accounting Fraternity, Commerce Council president, president of Beta Eta Sigma National Freshman Scholastic Honors Fraternity, Scarlet and Gray treasurer, sophomore class president and member of the Student Senate, Buckeye Club and the Freshmen Tennis Team.

His body has been donated to science.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria, Ohio 44830.

Helen C. Pool
Homemaker/nurse's aide

Helen C. Pool, 83, formerly of South Fifth Street, Upper Sandusky, died at 2:55 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in the Wyandot County Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky, where she had resided the past six years.

She was born in Tiffin, Oct. 8, 1916, to John and Jessica (Lacey) Shrode. On June 25, 1938, in Tiffin, she married Russell G. Pool, who died March 17, 1981.

Survivors include: a son, Ronald E. Pool of Upper Sandusky; two daughters, Ellen Marie Pool of Upper Sandusky and Mrs. Clarence (Margaret) Meyer, of Bellevue; five grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Shrode of St. Petersburg, Fla.,and Donald Shrode of Venice, Fla.

A brother, Karl Shrode, also is deceased.

Mrs. Pool, a homemaker, also worked as a nurse's aide for more than 30 years at the Fairhaven Home in Upper Sandusky.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Church, Upper Sandusky, its AEF class, Warpole Chapter 366 Order Eastern Star and a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, Upper Sandusky. She enjoyed collecting Fenton Glass.

The Rev. Derik Hines will conduct the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Lucas Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County or the Wyandot County Home Activity Fund.

Dorothy J. House
Former Wayne homemaker

Dorothy J. House, 85, formerly of Wayne, died at 2 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, in Toledo.

She was born Jan. 13, 1915, in Middleport, to Charles E. and Edna (Folden) Rathburn. She first married , Donald R. Whitington, and they were divorced. Her second husband, Kenneth N. House, preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1992.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Gary (Mary) Campbell of Weston, Mrs. James (Nancy) Woessner of Fostoria and Mrs. Von (Sharon) Hoiles of Temperance, Mich.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Rosalind A. Doyle; a granddaughter, Anne M. Woessner; nine brothers, Amos, Allen, Frank, Martin, Arnold, Rex, Robert, Regnald and Pearl Rathburn; and six sisters, including two who died in infancy and Doris Buckingham, Norma Rochester, Pat Holman and Clara Robenalt.

Mrs. House, a homemaker, also had been employed at the former Kresge store in Fostoria and as a nurses's aide at the Wood County Hospital, Bowling Green.

A 1936 graduate of Fostoria High School, she was a member of Mt. Zion United Brethren Church, Wayne.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, with the Rev. Howard Munn officiating. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
