Harriett L. Shellhammer Greene
Self-employed piano teacher

Harriett L. Shellhammer Greene, 75, formerly of Clyde, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in North Ridgeville, where she had resided for three and a half years.

She was born in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., April 6, 1924, to James and Margaret (Buzzard) Crabtree. In 1942, she married Arlin D. Shellhammer, who died in 1973. She married Robert D. Green in 1974. He died in 1995.

Survivors include: three sons, Glen L. Shellhammer of Clyde, James A. Shellhammer of Glenwood, Iowa, and Gary R. Shellhammer of Lakeview; four daughters, Louise Shellhammer of North Ridgeville, Mrs. Tom (Martha) Dudley of Fremont, Mrs. Tom (Paula) Clancy of Hillard and Mrs. Matt (Sheila) Redfern of Vista, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a brother, James Crabtree.

Also preceding her in death was a sister, Esther Crabtree Poulsen.

Mrs. Greene, a self-employed piano teacher in Clyde for more than 50 years, was a member of the Progress Club of Clyde.

She formerly was a member of Order of Eastern Star and former organist and children's choir director at the Clyde First United Methodist Church.

Her family pioneered the settlement of Ft. Lauderdale in the early 1900s, where her father built the third house.

A resident of the Clyde area since 1945, she received her nurse's training in Cincinnati; and her music education from Sheerwood School of Music and Heidelberg College.

The Rev. Dennis King will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4 service in the First United Methodist Church, Clyde. Interment will be in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

There will be no visitation. The Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the First Methodist Church Children's Choir Fund.

Louis F. Kleman
Truck driver

Louis F. Kleman, 54, of 225 High St., Carey, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Dearborn, Mich.

He was born in Lima Nov. 7, 1945, to the late John H. and Lucille (Verhoff) Kleman. His stepmother, Alice Jewers, survives in Glandorf. On April 6, 1991, in Findlay, he married Beverly J. King. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Robert P. of Rising Sun, Kim W. of rural Wharton and James E., at home; a daughter, Nicole J., at home; four grandchildren and a step-grandchild; a sister, Margie Rosslett of Ottawa; a stepsister, Marilyn Hughes, also of Ottawa; and two half brothers, Dale H. of Kalida and Kenneth of Glandorf.

A brother, Timothy Kleman; and a stepbrother, Gary Jewers, are deceased.

Mr. Kleman, a truck driver for Bowling Transportation Inc., Wayne, for the past six years, attended the First Free Will Baptist Church, Carey.

He also was a member of Carey Conservation Club and S.A.L. American Legion Post 344, both of Carey.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. Brent Layne officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Rita M. Nieset
Area resident's mother

Rita M. Nieset, 82, of 914 Tucker Road, Fremont, died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Countryside Continuing Care Center. She was born April 29, 1918, to Frank and Laura (Meyer) Snyder. On Oct. 21, 1939, she married Cletus (Pete) Nieset. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Eugene Nieset of Fremont; three daughters, Marie Arend of New Riegel, Janet Havens of Harbor Springs, Mich., and Barb Kowaleski of Sandusky; three sisters, Sister Mary Gonzaga, O.S.B. of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth Lehman of Toledo, and Emmerence Grime of Archbold; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was a sister, Helen Gonya.

Mrs. Nieset worked for the board of elections for many years, she retired from Montgomery Ward as bookkeeper. Memberships included: St. Ann Catholic Community, St. Ann Society Charter, and the Order of Martha. She was an avid card player and knitter.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at St. Ann Community. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery, Millersville.

Visitation hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch St., Fremont.

Memorials may be made to Tuition Fund at St. Joseph Central Catholic High School or to the Benedictine Sisters.

Robert Lee Hopple
Former Tiffin resident

Robert Lee Hopple, 47, of 200 Woodgrove Way, Stokesdale, N.C., formerly of Tiffin, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Moorehead Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hopple was born in Tiffin.

Survivors include: his mother, Kathleen Nufer Hopple; a brother, Tim Hopple; two sisters, Cheryl Barnhart, and Kris Anne Hopple; three nieces, Michelle and Stephanie Barnhart, and Ashley Hopple, all of Tiffin; and a special friend, Wanda Raines of Stoneville, N.C.

Mr. Hopple was employed with Senator Pen, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was of the Catholic faith.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, 127 Ellisboro Road, Madison, NC 27025, phone (336) 427-0205.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

William P. Bare
Tiffin resident, veteran

William P. Bare, 66, of 1738 W. Market St., died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Mansfield Medical Center Hospital.

The United Veterans Council will conduct a graveside service at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel cemetery, McCutchenville.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Richard T. Crawford
Resident of Tiffin

Richard T. Crawford, 56, of 54 Spayth St., died at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

Arrangements are pending at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, Tiffin.

Trudy Jo May-Turner
Sister of Tiffin resident

Trudy Jo May-Turner, 46, of Midland, Texas, formerly of Findlay, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Texas.

She was born July 3, 1953, to Louis E. and Doris M. (Pettet) May. Her mother survives in Findlay. On July 6, 1996 she married Joe Turner. He survives in Midland, Texas.

Other survivors include: a stepdaughter, Kathy Jo Turner of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; and a sister, Mrs. Linda Alderman of Tiffin.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Terry May.

Mrs. May-Turner was a graduate of Findlay High School and a Class of 1975 graduate of Findlay College, summa cum laude. She worked as an accountant for Marathon Oil Co. both in Findlay and in Texas for 25 years. Memberships included St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Richland Hills Country Club in Midland. She was an avid golfer, bowler and amateur photographer.

The Rev. Gregory W. Creech will officiate the 11 a.m. Saturday service at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial will be at New Lexington cemetery in Perry County.

Visitation hours are 3-5 and 7-9 tonight at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Father Ralph Schneider, C.PP.S.
Former St. Boniface pastor

The Rev. Ralph Schneider, 63, died at the St. Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio, at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, after a long bout with cancer. Father Ralph was the eldest child of the late Urban and Hilda (Didion) Schneider of Bellevue, born Feb. 8, 1937.

Surviving are: four brothers, Urban and Walter Schneider, both of Bellevue, Paul Schneider of Clyde, and Carl Schneider of Sandusky; a sister, Maryann Klein of Elyria; and 10 nephews and nieces and six great nephews and nieces.

Father Schneider entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood at Brunnerdale High School Seminary in Canton Sept. 3, 1951. He was professed Aug. 15, 1958, and ordained to the priesthood May 31, 1964, by Archbishop Paul Leibold in Assumption Chapel at St. Charles Center.

He served his entire priesthood in pastoral work in parishes and hospitals. He began as an associate pastor at St. James the Less Church in Columbus until 1968. He then moved to Cleveland where he served as an associate pastor at three different churches over a period of three years, St. Edward, St. Adalbert, and Our Lady of Good Counsel. In 1971, he moved to Cincinnati to minister as chaplain at Christ Hospital. He took on the additional assignment of administrator of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Cincinnati in 1974. Father Ralph returned to Cleveland in 1982 to serve again as associate pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church and as chaplain at Deaconess Hospital. He was the associate pastor at St. Andrew Church in Orlando, Fla., from 1984 until 1987 when he became pastor of St. Boniface Church in New Riegel. Father Ralph moved to St. Peter and Paul Church in Ottawa and served as associate pastor from 1994 to 1998. He also served as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Montzuma, Ohio, for a number of months and as associate pastor of St. Michael Parish in Kalida, during the past two years. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus.

Friends may call at Auxter-Groff Funeral Home, 1105 Castalia St., SR 269 in Bellevue 4-9 p.m. Saturday, with prayers at 8 p.m., or at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, with prayers at 7 p.m., and Monday prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. The provincial director of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, the Very Rev. Angelo Anthony, C.PP.S., will be the celebrant. Interment will immediately follow in the CPPS Community cemetery at St. Charles Center.

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Missionaries of the Precious Blood for the education of students preparing for priesthood and brotherhood. Such gifts should be sent to the Director of Development, Provincial House, 431 East Second St., Dayton, OH 45402-1764.

Richard T. Crawford
Former Tiffin factory worker

Richard T. Crawford, 56, of 54 Spayth St. died at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Tiffin Mercy Hospital.

He was born Jan. 11, 1944, to Samuel T. and Hatti Jane (Overstreet) Crawford. He married Janet R. Carp at St. Andrew Church Sept. 28, 1974. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Katrina Harper and Annette Harper, both of Republic; and a sister, Jean Parsins of Lorain.

His parents, eight brothers and four sisters are deceased.

He worked at Tiffin Enterprise, Tiffin Glass and ITT in the 1970s and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Mary's cemetery followed by a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. William Rose officiating. The rosary will be recited 15 minutes prior to the Mass.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary Catholic Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

George L. Carter Jr.
Green Springs resident

George L. Carter Jr., 64, of TR 190, Green Springs, died at his residence Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.

He was born in Clyde Oct. 21, 1935, to George L. and Gertrude (Franks) Carter Grover. They are deceased. On Oct. 10, 1953, he married Mary Schildt. She survives.

Also surviving are: six sons, George L. III and Randy of Fremont, David of Green Springs, Brian of Marblehead, Mark and Shawn of Clyde; two daughters, Mrs. John (Mary Ann) Cooper of Muncie, Ind., and Mrs. Edward (Sherri) Warwick of Byron, Ga.; 30 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Mike, and Robert of Clyde, James of Fremont, and Ron Grover of Clyde; and five sisters, Mrs. Cletus (Shirley) Hall and Mrs. Daryl (Darlene Sue) Roberson of Fremont, Mrs. Mel (Gloria) Goon and Mrs. Roger (Shirley) Carter of Clyde, and Mrs. Clayton (Kathryn) Renfro of Green Springs.

Mr. Carter attended Clyde schools; was a laborer at Fremont Plastics; and a member of Clyde Eagles.

There will be no funeral or visitation.

The Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene F. Avery
Bellevue GE employee

Irene F. Avery, 88, of 717 E. Center St., Bellevue, died in the Bellevue Hospital Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.

She was born Oct. 29, 1911, in New Haven to Fred and Pearl (Fullager) Franklin. She married Myron N. Avery Aug. 16, 1930. He died Feb. 27, 1973.

Survivors include two sons, James F. of Clyde and Richard M. of Bellevue; a daughter, Helen Schlegel of Fremont; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard Franklin of Willard; and two sisters, Mildred Wonsitler and Ruth Haylett, both of Sygnet.

A son, Edmund F.; a granddaughter; two brothers, Paul and Fred Jr.; and a sister, Grace Hamman preceded her in death.

She was a 1929 graduate of Bellevue high school; a homemaker; worked at Bellevue GE for 15 years; was a member of Lyme Congregational Church and the Ladies Society.

The service will be at 10:30 a..m. Monday in the Lyme Congregational Church with interment in Strongsridge cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 Sunday at the Auxter-Groff Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Memorials may be made to Lyme Congregational Church.

Orlin D. Miller
Former Tiffin resident

Orlin D. Miller, 70, formerly of 273 4th Ave., died at 5:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at the Ruffing Family Care Center in Bloomville.

He was born Aug. 7, 1929, in Attica to Everett Wade and Jessie
(Zellers) Miller.
He is survived by his former wife, Mrs. Marcella (Crider) Miller of Tiffin; two sons, Gary and Ricky of Tiffin; three daughters, Linda Barnett of Norwalk, Sherry Kinn and Justine Ryan of Tiffin; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a half brother, Dalton Schaaf of Willard.

He was preceded in death by a son, Orlin D. Miller Jr., and a half brother, Larry Schaaf.

Mr. Miller grew up in Attica and moved in 1955 to Tiffin, where he was employed at American Standard and Rosenblatt Metalstriping Company as a cutter. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a former member of the DAV and VFW.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, Attica, with the Rev. Gary C. Hicks officiating. Burial will be in the Attica-Venice Township cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.
