Infant daughter

Graveside services for Donna Jean Newsom, infant daughter of Jason and Melody Newsom of 411 Lawrence St., Bellevue, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.

The Foos and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue, is in charge of arrangements.

Alonzo J. Shank
General Electric retiree

Alonzo J. Shank, 75, of South Poplar Street, Fostoria, died at 7:44 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2000, in Fostoria Community Hospital.

He was born in Fostoria, May 31, 1924, to James and Emma (Mobley) Shank. On May 2, 1953, in Angola, Ind., he married Iola E. Keckler, who survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a step-daughter, Margy Remy of Fostoria; four brothers, Richard "Joe" Shank of Atwater, Calif., Raymond "Gabby" Shank of Milwaukee, Wis., Carl and James "Bill" Shank, both of Fostoria; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were a daughter, Nancy Baeder; and four brothers, Wilbert "Red," John, Ray and George Shank.

Mr. Shank, a member of Praise Chapel Church, North Baltimore, retired in 1981 from the General Electric in Tiffin.

The Rev. William McDaniel will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Leonard A. Ferguson
Factory retiree/avid camper

Leonard A. Ferguson, 86, 58 Cottage Ave., died at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2000, in the Autumnwood Care Center.

He was born April 6, 1914, in Upper Sandusky, to Clarence and Myrtle (Wagner) Ferguson. His wife, Marjorie (Dayton) Ferguson, whom he married Jan. 12, 1936, in Bowling Green, preceded him in death Dec. 25, 1994.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Donna Jean) Sours of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; a son, Richard A. Ferguson of Tiffin; a brother, Frank Ferguson of Deweysville, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Three brothers also are deceased.

Mr. Ferguson, an avid camper, retired in 1971 as a sprayer from the American Standard, after 30 years of employment.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gail Angel officiating. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care or a charity of the donor's choice.

Alfred F. Malling
Standard Oil employee

Alfred F. Malling, 87, 226 Gibson St., died at 6:25 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2000, in the Autumnwood Care Center.

He was born in Cleveland, March 18, 1913, to Andrew and Celia (Peyer) Malling. On Oct. 21, 1939, in Lakewood, he married Ruth M. Molloy, who preceded him in death Nov. 28, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn Malling of Syracuse, N.Y. and Donald Malling of Brackney, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Steven (Patricia Freson) of Verona, Wis.; two brothers, Edward Malling of Cincinnati and Donald Behner of Hinckley; a sister, Cecilia Berenger of Cleveland; and five grandchildren.

His step-father, also is deceased.

An avid fisherman, Mr. Malling retired in 1976 as field auditor from the Standard Oil of Ohio, after 37 years of service.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, where the rosary will be recited at 10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society-Seneca County Unit or a charity of the donor's choice.

John R. 'Jack' Zahn
Car salesman

John R. "Jack" Zahn, 59, of Tiffin, formerly of Marion, died at 12:01 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2000, in Marion General Hospital.

He was born Feb. 18, 1941, in Salem, Ohio, to the late Richard W. Zahn and Thelma Lindsay, who survives.

Survivors also include: his special friend, Mary Kay Zilles; a son, Michael Zahn of Pickerington; two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Michelle) Altenburger of Maumee and Jennifer Zahn of Tiffin; five grandchildren; a brother, William Zahn of Dublin, Ohio; and two sisters, Sue Zarzyczny of Marion and Janet Roberts of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.

Mr. Zahn, a member of the First Lutheran Church in Tiffin, was employed as a car salesman with John Snyder Auto Mart in Findlay.

He was a graduate of Marion Harding High School.

The Rev.J. Weston Jones will conduct the 10 a.m. Wednesday service in Emanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Marion cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Boyd Funeral Home, 122 W. Columbia, Marion.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Barbara J. 'Bobby Jo' Heichel
Green Springs homemaker

Barbara J. "Bobby Jo" Heichel, 66, of 303 N. Broadway, Green Springs, died at 8:42 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2000, in Memorial Hospital, Fremont, where she had been a patient since Friday evening.

She was born in Fremont May 18, 1933, to the late Lyle Lamar and Maude (Daniels) Craig. On Sept. 22, 1951, in Green Springs, she married Richard E. Heichel. He survives.

Other survivors include: five daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Johanna Marie) Staples of Lambertville, Mich., Mrs. Charles (Cynthia Lynn) Horne and Penny Sue DuBois, both of Green Springs, Virginis Lee Heichel of Montpelier and Mrs. Robert (Teresa Kay) Cruz of Yakima, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Paul (Elthea) Buskirk of rural Tiffin.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Karl and Roy Craig; and two sisters, Rebecca Boudrie and Ellen Mae Behrendsen.

Mrs. Heichel, a homemaker, was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Golden Threads, Keen Age Club of Old Fort Bank, the Green Springs Town Band, O.C.C.L. and Tops.

She served as a 4-H adviser, Camp Fire Girls leader and was a former president of the Clyde-Green Springs Music Boosters.

A 1951 graduate of Green Springs High School, she also served as proprietor of the Snack Basket, secretary of the Senior Graduating Class, potluck chairman of Haines City Trailer Park in Florida, and as a Sunday school teacher.

The Rev. Renae Meggitt will be the officiant at the 2 p.m. Wednesday service in the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs. Burial will be in Green Springs cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and one hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the VFW National Children's Home, Eaton Rapids, Mich.

Ruth Alice Griffin
Retired seamstress

Ruth Alice Griffin, 88, of 38 Nile St., died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in the Ruffing Family Care Center of Tiffin.

She was born in Seneca County Oct. 30, 1911, to Joseph and Adelaide (Fate) Distel. Her husband, W. Howard Griffin, whom she married March 5, 1938, in St. Joseph Church, Tiffin, died May 20, 1962.

Survivors include a son, Mark O. Griffin of Tiffin; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Hildegarde Weatherholt and Catherine Crist; and a brother, Bernard Distel, also are deceased.

Mrs. Griffin retired in 1967 as a seamstress from the Tiffin State Hospital. She also worked at the Tiffin Bake Shop, National City Bank, Webster Mfg. Co. and in the cafeteria at St. Mary School.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and its Altar Rosary Society.

The Rev. William Rose will be the officiant at the 10 a.m. Thursday funeral Mass in St. Mary Catholic Church. The rosary will be recited at the church 15 minutes before the Mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6:30-9 p.m. today in the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, where a wake service will be at 8:30 p.m..

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care of Tiffin.

Juanita 'Polly' (Kline) Cover
Former Republic resident

Word has been received of the death of Juanita "Polly" (Kline) Cover, 79, of Marblehead, who died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in Providence Hospital, Sandusky.

She was born Dec. 7, 1919, in New Washington, to Lester and Marie (Barnhart) Kline. On June 11, 1955, she married Robert "Dutch" Cover. He survives.

Survivors also include: two sons, Mark Cover of Findlay and Gary Cover of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Sharon Davis of Stallings, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death was a brother, Donald Kline.

A homemaker, Mrs. Cover was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Danbury, where she played the piano, sang in the choir, served as a Sunday school teacher and as children's choir director for more than 20 years.

A 1937 graduate of Republic High School, her parents had lived in Republic for several years on East Street.

Memorial services were in St. Paul Lutheran Church with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church organ fund.

The Neidecker, Le Veck and Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard D. Bernard Sr.
Bernard Lumber owner/operator

Richard D. Bernard Sr., 60, of 155 Woodland Place, Clyde, formerly of Port Clinton and Attica, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2000, at his home, following an extended illness.

He was born April 25, 1939, in Tiffin, to the late Oscar and Louise (Wilhelm) Bernard. On Oct. 3, 1959, in Fremont, he married Judy Pence. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Richard D. Bernard Jr. of Attica and Ron "Oscar" Bernard of East Glacier, Mont.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Marie Tate of Tiffin.

He also was preceded in death by infant twin children, Jeanne and John Bernard; six brothers, Albert J., Joseph A., Oscar Jr., Charles A., Francis R. and John E. Bernard; and two sisters, Mary L. Boggs and Margaret Ann Bernard.

Mr. Bernard, the owner and operator of Bernard Lumber, Bernard Construction and B & W Pallet Co., all of Attica, was a former member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Attica.

Also a former member of the Fremont Moose and the Clyde Eagles, he enjoyed fishing, camping, carpentry and tending his rose gardens.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph P. Szybka officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, Attica.

Memorials may be made to the Attica Food Pantry, 10687 E. Bloom TR 44, Bloomville, OH 44818.

George E. Ramsower
Brother of area residents

George E. Ramsower, 70, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, in Providence Hospital, Mobile, Ala.

He was born April 5, 1929, in Berwick, to Mabel (Heilman) and Arsion Ramsower.

Surviving are a son, John Ramsower of Moss Point, Miss.; a daughter Mary (Ramsower) Huyett of Pascagoula, Miss.; a brother, Ned Ramsower of McCutchenville; and a sister, Sally Dye of Fremont;

A daughter and a sister also are deceased.

Services were March 23 in the O'Brian and O'Keefe Mortuary, Pascagoula. The body was cremated and buried at sea.

Hazel B. Kessler
Ford retiree

Hazel B. Kessler, 94, formerly of 33 W. Tiffin St., New Riegel, died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in the Ruffing Family Care Center, Tiffin.

She was born April 23, 1905, in Hancock County, to John E. and Mary A. (Filliater) Williams. On Sept. 10, 1929, in St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Frenchtown, she married Charles J. Kessler Sr., who died March 16, 1957.

Surviving are four sons, George J. Kessler of Republic, Charles Kessler Jr. of Fostoria, Raymond A. Kessler of New Riegel and Gerald C. Kessler, also of Fostoria; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Martha T.) Haubert of Alvada, Rita M. Lafontaine and Annabelle M. Hemminger, both of New Riegel; a brother, Paul L. Williams of Fostoria; a sister, Clara Holman, also of Fostoria; 40 grandchildren, 104 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a son, Richard A. Kessler; an infant daughter, Norma Jean; a grandson, Donald Lafontaine; a granddaughter, Teresa Kessler; three brothers, John, Gilbert and Clarence Williams; and three sisters, Oleva Koch, Albertha Reinhart and Viola Tiell.

Mrs. Kessler, a member of the New Riegel American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, retired in 1965 from the Ford Co. in Fostoria, where she had been employed since 1948.

She also was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, its Rosary Altar Society and Women of the Moose, all of New Riegel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Peter Catholic Church, Alvada, with the Rev. Leonard Kistler C.PP.S. and the Rev. Harry Cavanaugh C.PP.S. as con-celebrants. The rosary will be recited at the church at 9:40 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Boniface Parish cemetery, New Riegel.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be at 4 p.m., Women of the Moose services at 6 p.m., followed by American Legion Auxiliary services.

Memorials may be made to St. Boniface Church's Restoration Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
