Burdell A. "Slick" Black
Whirlpool Corp. retiree

Burdell A. "Slick" Black, 73, of Manhattan St., Clyde, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Fremont Memorial Hospital. He was born June 1, 1926, to Clarence and Daisy (Bloom) Black. On June 25, 1949 he married Margie J. Kock. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Scott Black of Clyde and Paul R. Black of Green Springs; a brother, Marlin Black of Tiffin; and a sister, Maxine Herbert of Tiffin.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Doyle and Cloyce Black, and two sisters, Betty Fey and Velva Dye.

Mr. Black was a 1944 Green Springs High School graduate. He attended Terra Community College and University of Wisconsin. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He worked as a lubrication technician at Whirlpool Corp. in Clyde for 42 years, retiring in 1991. A member of Clyde Eagles 2291; Independent Order of Foresters, he was an avid Cleveland Browns, Indians and Buckeyes fan, and enjoyed horse racing.

The Rev. Steve Wood will officiate the 10:30 a.m. Monday funeral at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Burial will be at McPherson cemetery, Veterans Section.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home with Eagles services at 7.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Clyde American Legion and Clyde V.F.W.

Robert Charles Holland
Clyde/Green Springs teacher

Robert Charles Holland, 66, of Smith Street, Green Springs, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at his home. He was born Aug. 17, 1933, in Toledo to James and Maybelle (Geoffrion) Holland Sr. On March 31, 1956, he married Mary Lee Nontell. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Gary Holland of Pandora and Jerry Holland of Norwalk; five daughters, Sue Holland of Bucyrus, Sheryl Holland of Green Springs, Mary Lou Holland of Zanesville, Deborah Holland of Bettsville and Roberta Holland of Sylvania; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, James Holland Jr. of Maumee.

Mr. Holland was a U.S. Army veteran and a junior high school teacher for Clyde-Green Springs Schools, retiring in 1990.

Visitation and services will be private for the family. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.

The Foos-Klein Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William R. McConnell
Tiffin residents' father

William R. McConnell, 70, of Mt. Vernon, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was born Jan. 6, 1930, to Robert Rae and Daisy Belle (Long) McConnell.

He was married for 42 years to Ruth E. Bieberbach, and she survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Donald W. McConnell of Apple Creek and Roger A. McConnell of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Karen Sue McConnell of Tiffin; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Wolfe and Mrs. Sarah Daniels, both of Mt. Vernon, and Mary Miller of Danville; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. McConnell was a self-employed farmer and member of Homer Presbyterian Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

The Rev. Paul Atkinson will officiate the 11 a.m. Monday funeral at the Law-Baker Funeral Home, 34 N. Main St., Utica. Burial will be at Brandon cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Homer Presbyterian Church, 277 South St., Homer, OH 43027 and/or Homer Fire Department, 405 South St., NW Homer, OH 43027

Minnie L. Conrad
Fostoria resident

Minnie L. Conrad, 78, of Circle Drive, Fostoria, died at 2:25 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the North Shore Retirement Community in Lakeside-Marblehead. She was born Jan. 20, 1922, to Merle and Nancy (Noblit) Boice. On Aug. 31, 1938, she married the Rev. A. Richard Conrad. He survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Moyer of Sandusky; four brothers, Bill Boice of Bowling Green, Ed Lockmiller of North Baltimore, Dick Lockmiller of Defiance and Byron Lloyd Hall of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Karen Neier of Weston, Leona Spears and Jean Lanning, both of Bowling Green; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceded in death by a brother, Walter Boice; and two sisters, Norma Spears and Lucille Conrad.

Mrs. Conrad was receptionist for Dr. Markey in Fostoria for many years, and was a homemaker and pastor's wife. She was a member of the Trinity United Brethren Church in Fostoria, Woman's Missionary Society at the church, coordinator of Summer Bible School at Trinity and other area churches, past president of the Portage Holiness Camp Auxiliary in Portage, Ohio, and volunteered at the Fostoria Sharing Kitchen.

The Rev. Kenneth Graham, the Rev. Keith Davis, and the Rev. Steven Shover will officiate the 11 a.m. Monday funeral at the Trinity United Brethren Church on Thomas Street, Fostoria. Burial will be at Knollcrest cemetery near Arcadia.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Brethren Church, Fostoria; Wayne Wesleyan Church, Wayne, Ohio, and/or Stein Hospice of Sandusky.

Rosella C. Thiel
Upper Sandusky resident

Rosella C. Thiel, 98, resided at 351 W. Walker St., Upper Sandusky, for the past 16 years, died at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000. She was born May 30, 1901, to Nicholas J. and Elizabeth (Benner) Seifert. On Sept. 29, 1925, she married Albert F. Thiel. He died May 23, 1977.

Survivors include: a son, Paul F. Thiel of Upper Sandusky; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by: a son, Richard A. Thiel; a daughter Margery Vaughn; two grandchildren; three brothers, Ed, Frank, and Fred Seifert; six sisters, Odella Logsdon, Clara Seifert, Emma Zachardy, Hilda A. Seifert, Ida Lesser, and Mary Fischer.

Mrs. Thiel was a homemaker and care giver for many of her family, a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Upper Sandusky, lifelong member; member of C.L.C., Rosary Altar Society, and did volunteer worker for St. Vincent De Paul Society. She enjoyed cards, Cleveland Indian baseball, cooking and reading.

The Rev. James Holmer will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Upper Sandusky. Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Bringman-Clark Funeral Home. Biblical scripture service will be at 7:45, followed by a C.L.C. memorial service.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Endowment Fund and/or the charity of the donor's choice.

Florence V. Hahler
Tiffin resident's sister

Florence V. Hahler, 82, of Hillside Acres, 370 E. Howard, Willard, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Mercy Hospital, Willard.

She was born Dec. 29, 1917, in Bismark to Walter and Rose (Miller) Brown. She married Gilbert S. Hahler on Oct. 22, 1940, in St. Sebastian's Church, Bismark, and he died Jan. 24, 1997. A brother, Bernard Brown, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include: two sons, Gerald P. of Willard, and Roger L. of Attica; a daughter, Mrs. Jules (Ann) Bahnsen of Columbia, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Viv Daniel of Willard, Justine Wise of Tiffin, Irene Wise of Attica, and Mildred Hiler of New Washington.

Mrs. Hahler was a homemaker; a member of St. Sebastian's Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society of the church; well known as a family historian; and enjoyed gardening and playing cards.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the St. Sebastian Church, Bismark, with the Rev. John M. Nagele officiating. Burial will be in the St. Sebastian cemetery.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, Attica, where the Rosary service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Auda Gay Sharp
Bettsville homemaker

Auda Gay Sharp, 78, of Sullivan Street, Bettsville, died at 6 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2000, in Autumnwood Care Center where she had been a resident for two years.

She was born March 1, 1922, in West Virginia to Albert and Bertha (Hall) Garvin. She married Sherman Sharp and he is deceased.

Survivors include: five sons, Mark and Gary of Rising Sun, Rodney of Millersville, Paul of West Virginia, and Tim of Bettsville; four daughters, Kathy Shiley and Darlene Patuto of Bettsville, Marlene Hutchins of Tennessee, and Brenda Osborn of West Virginia; 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Doyle Garvin, Carl Garvin, and Denzil Garvin of Diana, WV., and Ray Garvin of New York; three sisters, Letha Cook of Fostoria, Erma Sharp of New Riegel, and Bonnie Forysthe of Heflen, Ala.

Preceding her in death were: a son, Richard Sharp; two daughters, Karen Sharp and Kimberly Sharp; two brothers, Charles Garvin and Mike Garvin; and a sister, Opal Carpenter.

Mrs. Sharp was a homemaker.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Engle Funeral Home of Bettsville with the Rev. Mike Starkey officiating and burial in Bradner cemetery.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth K. (Oehling) Miller
Mother of Tiffin resident

Elizabeth K. (Oehling) Miller, 84, of 512 McDonough St., Sandusky, died Friday evening, May 19, 2000, in Firelands Community Hospital, Sandusky, following a brief illness.

She was born in Oberlin, April 12, 1916, to Leon and Agusta (Kuhl) Oehling. Her husband, Lloyd L. Miller, preceded her in death in 1989.

Surviving are a son, Lloyd L. Miller of Tiffin; two granddaughters, both of Tiffin; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Ernest Oehling of Chicago, Ill.; and two nieces.

Also preceding her in death were: a grandson, Jeffrey L. Miller in 1985 and a brother, Donald Oehling.

Mrs. Miller, a 1935 graduate of Bellevue Central High School, was a member of Althea Chapter 438 Order Eastern Star, VFW Ladies Auxiliary 2529, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 83 and the United Grandmothers Club, Rainbow Chapter 43, where she had served as past president.

The Rev. Dwight C. Hein of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Tuesday service in the Quick-Park and Pfeil Funeral Home, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Robert E. Karcher Sr.
Retired truck driver

Robert E. Karcher Sr., 71, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at his home on Bartsun Road, Fremont, following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Toledo, to Henry and Idella (Swope) Karcher. He was raised in Vickery by the late Mr. and Mrs. William Swope. On July 16, 1949, he married Eileen J. Schell, who survives in Fremont.

Other survivors include: a son, Robert E. Karcher Jr. of Lima; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Bittner.

Mr. Karcher, a U.S. Army veteran, was employed for 24 years at Armstrong Air Conditioning, formerly the Johnson Corp, Bellevue, as a truck driver, retiring in 1993.

A member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Fremont, he attended St. Joseph High School, Fremont.

He enjoyed golfing and fishing and was an active member of the Thornwood Golf Club.

Visitation and services were Saturday in Greenlawn Memory Gardens Chapel, with the Rev. Omer Rethinger, officiating. Burial with military honors was in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Clyde. The Foos-Klein Funeral Home, Clyde was in charge of arrangements.

Katherine Caroline Bates
Fostoria homemaker

Katherine Caroline Bates, 42, of 426 S. Poplar St., Fostoria, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, May 21, 2000, in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.

She was born in Fostoria, July 7, 1957, to the late Clifford M. and Rosella (Young) Thompson. Her companion of 21 years, Larry O. White Sr., died Nov. 24, 1999.

Survivors include: four sons, Chris A. Thompson, Myron L. Bates, Timothy and Larry O. White Jr., all of Fostoria; six grandchildren; six brothers, Bob Steele of Fostoria, Skip Steele and Mark Thompson, both of Tiffin, Clifford Thompson and Mike and Bill Myers, all of Fostoria; and three sisters, Ruby Lawrence of Tiffin and Dee Dee Chafin and Maeve Thompson, both of Brooksville, Fla.

Mrs. Bates was a homemaker.

The Rev. Donald R. Goodwin will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Chancey O. Jones Sr.
Big Bear Stores retiree

Former Tiffin resident, Chancey O. Jones Sr., 93, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2000, in the Fairhaven Home, Upper Sandusky, where he had resided since March 14.

He was born in Tiffin, Feb. 9, 1907, to Chance and Sadie (Hanna) Jones. His wife, Anna (Hayward) Jones, died June 6, 1985.

Surviving are: twin sons, Chancey O. Jones Jr. of Ewing, N.J. and Charles Jones of Royal Oak, Mich.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers and two sisters, also are deceased.

Mr. Jones, a 1925 graduate of Maumee High School and a 1929 graduate of Tiffin University, retired from the Big Bear Stores of Columbus.

A member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, he also lived in Toledo and Delaware.

Dr. Robert Buckley will conduct the 11 a.m. Thursday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church or St. Francis Home.

James E. Saunders
Ohio Power Co. retiree

James E. Saunders, 73, of 1434 Joseph Road, Fostoria, formerly of Gallipolis, died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2000, in the Winebrenner Village, Findlay.

He was born March 16, 1927, in Springfield, to Connie S. and Bertha Bernice (Young) Saunders. On Nov. 5, 1949, in Columbus, he married Dora M. Humbert, who survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: three sons, J. Scott Saunders of Fostoria, William R. "Wilbur" Saunders of Great Bend, Kan. and John C. Saunders of Westerville; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Ginger) Williams of Findlay; four brothers, Bill, Robert, Jack and Roger Saunders, all of Gallipolis; a sister, May Belle Parsely of Columbus; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were a brother, Connie Saunders Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Lou Brannon and Norma Jean Dailey.

Mr. Saunders, a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, was employed as a transmission construction representative, Senior. Class for Ohio Power (now AEP) in Fostoria and Zanesville, retiring in April 1989, after 40 years of service.

A U.S. Army veteran, having served 1944-47 in the Philippines during World War II, he also was a member of American Legion Post 73, VFW Post 421 and the United Sportsmen Club, all of Fostoria.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday; in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Interment will be in St. Wendelin Parish cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Bridge Hospice Care or the American Cancer Society.
