John H. Zender
Tiffin resident's son

John H. Zender, 72, of 818 Hemlock St., Celina, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2000, in Lima Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 14, 1927, in New Riegel to Bryce and Mary (Borer) Zender. He married Carol Ray Aug. 9, 1972. She survives.

Other survivors include: his mother of Tiffin; three sons, John Zender Jr. and David Zender, both of Findlay, and Mark Zender of Garden City, Colo.; four stepsons, Tom Noneman of Pendelton, Ind., Bob Noneman of Sherwood, Jerry Noneman and Dan Noneman, both of St. Marys; a daughter, Cindy Herman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and two brothers, Ed Zender of Columbus and Bryce Zender of Lakeland, Fla.

He was in the Army during World War II; was a retired state auditor, tax administrator for the city of Rockford; and member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Mercer County Elks, Celina American Legion, and Tri Squares Square Dancing Club.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Paul's United Methodist Church at Celina with the Rev. Robert Metheny officiating. Burial will be in North Grove cemetery, Celina.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Lehman Funeral Home in Celina and after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Celina.

Keith 'Smokey' Price
World War II veteran

Keith "Smokey" Price, 73, 198 Union St., died at 11:10 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2000, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born June 10, 1927, in East Fultonham, Ohio, to Earl and Mary Marie (Wilson) Price. On Oct. 18, 1952, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin, he married Antoinette Vassalle, who survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Joseph G. Price; a daughter, Mrs. David (Mary T.) Estep; and a brother, Harold C. Price. All are of Tiffin.

A sister, Mary Louise, died in infancy.

Mr. Price retired from McGowan's Tavern after 38 years of employment. He also worked for the former American Clay Forming Co. for seven years.

An avid fisherman and Tiger fan, he was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church..

He served in the Philippines in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, where he received the WW II Victory Medal and the Philippine Independence Ribbon.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Frank A. Murd and the Rev. William Rose as con-celebrates. The rosary will be recited at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, where the United Veterans Council will conduct military graveside services..

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the church.

Ersie F. Wagoner
Fostoria centenarian

Ersie F. Wagoner, 100, formerly of 400 N. Main St., Fostoria, died at 6:25 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2000, in the Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.

She was born May 1, 1900, in Miami County, Ind., to George W. and Emma (Donahue) Weaver. Her husband, Lewis D. Wagoner, whom she married May 26, 1924, in Marion, Ind., preceded her in death May 1, 1974.

Survivors include: a nephew, David Weaver of Kokomo, Ind. and two nieces, Ruth Glasburn of Peru, Ind. and Sally Andrews of North Kingstown, R.I.

Several brothers and sisters, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Wagoner, a homemaker, had been a member of the First Christian Church in Fostoria since 1934.

She also was a member of the Fostoria Women's Club, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Commission on Aging and Fostoria Senior Citizens.

The Rev. Alonzo Wise will be the officiant at the 1 p.m. service today in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be in Monroe cemetery, Continental.

Visitation is noon-1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Verna G. Smith Stines
Clyde homemaker

Verna G. Smith Stines, 75, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at her home at 430 W. Maple St., Clyde, following a long illness.

She was born Feb. 18, 1925, to Wiley and Cassie (Sheldon) Price. She first married Kyle Smith, Jan. 15, 1948, and he preceded her in death June 25, 1996. On Dec. 27, 1997, she married Paul Stines, who survives in Clyde.

Survivors also include three sons, BIlly R. Smith of Fremont, Kenneth E. Smith of Port Byron, Ill. and James R. Smith of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Debbie Dewald of Clyde and Barbara Bocanegra of Fremont; two step-sons, Clay and Andy Stines, both of Marblehead; a step-daughter, Crystal Chapmen, also of Marblehead; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and four sisters.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

A homemaker, Mrs. Stines was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Clyde.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Foos-Klein Funeral Home, Clyde. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Stein Hospice, Sandusky or Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Clyde.

Earl Lease
Rural Tiffin dairy farmer

Earl Lease, 78, died early Monday morning, June 26, 2000, at his home at 5251 E. CR 16.

He was born March 2, 1922, to Bert and Fern Iva (Fogleman) Lease. On Nov. 25, 1941, in Sandusky, he married Winifred Windau, who survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Mervin (Becky) WIlhelm of Tiffin and Mrs. Thomas (Bobbie) Miller of Bloomville; three sons, Rick, Ron and Ray Lease, all of Tiffin; 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carl Lease of Toledo.

Also preceding him in death were a son, Roger; a sister, Iva Miller and a grandson, John Wilhelm.

Mr. Lease, a 1939 graduate of Bloomville High School, worked as a dairy farmer all his life.

He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Republic; the Rock Creek cemetery Board and the Seneca County Farm Bureau.

He was a former member of the Republic Elevator Board and Bloom Grange and served as a former A.S.C. Committeeman.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek cemetery, Tiffin.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville, where a Christian wake service will be at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care or the church.

Frances Sternal
Former hospital employee/restaurant worker

Frances Sternal, 87, 235 E. Market St., died at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000, at her residence.

She was born April 14, 1913, in Mansfield, to James and Violet (Chevinski) Sternal.

Her friend and caregiver, Helen Krupp, survives in Tiffin.

Miss Sternal, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, had worked at the Pines Restaurant and at the former Tiffin State Hospital.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. The body has been cremated.

There will be no visitation. The Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the church or Calvert Foundation.

Donald A. Nieset
Adult education computer teacher

Donald A. Nieset, 55, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his residence on Sandusky CR 223, Fremont.

He was born July 22, 1944, in Fremont to the late Bernard and Lillian (Corneluis) Nieset. His wife, Dorothy (Bernard) Nieset, whom he married July 19, 1969, survives.

Survivors also include: a son, Nicholas Nieset of Fremont; a daughter, Heather Nieset, also of Fremont; a brother, Gerald Nieset of Clyde; and five sisters, Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Karr, Mrs. Vincent (Laurene) Golembiowski, Mrs. Don (Eileen) Leffler and Mrs. Herman (Betty) Raths, all of Clyde and Mrs. Richard (Eulalia) Foos of Georgia.

A brother, Norbert Niese, also is deceased.

Mr. Nieset, a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph High School and a 1989 graduate of Terra Community College, was employed as an adult education computer teacher at the Tech Center.

Also a Jack of All Trades, he was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fremont and the American Federation of Teachers.

A lifelong Fremont area resident, he also was an avid reader and computer dabbler.

The Rev. Mark Herzog will be the celebrant at the 11 a.m. Thursday funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, Clyde.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Clyde Public Library.

Charles 'Skip' Junior Kline
Area residents father/brother

Charles "Skip" Junior Kline, 78, of 5505 W. Bar S, Tucson, Ariz., died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his residence in Pima County.

He was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Tiffin, to Virgil P. and Glenda (Shuff) Kline. On Nov. 21, 1940, in Covington, Ky., he married Louise Covert, who survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Robert C. Kline of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Betty) Whipple of Tiffin and Mrs. Kenneth (Suzette) Hineline of Fremont; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Donald Kline of New Riegel; and a sister, Mrs. Leonard (Dorothy) Watson of Bascom.

A former Bascom Lions Club member, Mr. Kline retired as a machinist and tool and die maker.

A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he formerly lived in rural Tiffin, moving to Tucson in 1982.

The Rev. Paul Eichar will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Thursday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Sand Ridge cemetery, Bascom.

Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Nick Watson Fund.
