Mary E. DeMoss
Former rural Tiffin centenarian

Mary E. DeMoss, 100, formerly of 1384 W. CR 30, died at 9:55 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, in Bethesda Care Center, Sandusky County, Fremont, where she had resided since Jan. 30, 1999.

She was born Nov. 24, 1899, in Liberty Township, Seneca County, to Curtis and Emma (Knepper) Edwards. On Dec. 29, 1917, she married Forest G. DeMoss, who preceded her in death Aug. 7, 1981.

Survivors include: three sons, Raymond E. and John C. "Jack" DeMoss, both of Tiffin and R. Wayne DeMoss of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Donna K. Ryman of Old Fort; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandson and two great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death are a grandson; three brothers, Dwight and Howard Edwards and an infant brother; and an infant sister.

Mrs. DeMoss, a homemaker, attended Fort Seneca United Church of Christ.

A member of Tiffin Chapter Order Eastern Star 189, the Daughters of American Revolution, Dolly Todd Madison Chapter and the Kum-Join-Us Farm Women's Club, she attended the Grand Ledge, Michigan area schools.

In 1907, she moved with her family to Grand Ledge and in 1931, returned to Ohio to live on the family farm where she remained until entering the nursing home.

The Rev. Barry Bordenkircher will be the officiant at the 2 p.m. Tuesday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Union cemetery, Old Fort.

Visitation will be noon until time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Wilbert J. "Bill" Piper
World War II veteran

Wilbert J. "Bill" Piper, 83, formerly of 45 Hopewell Ave., died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2000, in the Ruffing Family Care Center.

He was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Fostoria, to James W. and Ruth (Padgham) Piper. His wife, Agnes C. (Elchert) Piper, whom he married May 3, 1941, in New Riegel, died Oct. 19, 1993.

Surviving are a son, Donald J. Piper of New Riegel; two daughters, Mrs. Lester (Eloise) Arbogast of Carey and Mrs. David (Karen) Brown of Tiffin; a brother, Norman Piper of Fostoria; a sister, Winnie Morris of Tiffin; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, six sisters and a grandson, also are deceased.

Mr. Piper, a 1936 graduate of Fostoria High School, had been employed as a planer operator at the National Machinery.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion Post 354, New Riegel; the National Machinery Quarter Century Club and the Polka Boosters.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Catholic Church, where the rosary will be recited at 9:45 a.m.The Rev. Frank Murd will officiate. Entombment will be in Seneca Memory Garden Mausoleum where New Riegel American Legion will conduct military services

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where the National Machinery will meet in a group at 7 p.m.; New Riegel American Legion service will be at 8 p.m. and a wake service will be at 8:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Seneca County Cancer Society and Community Hospice Care.

Fred S. Ellenberger
General store operator/owner

Fred S. Ellenberger, 92, of Main Street, Burgoon, died Saturday evening, July 15, 2000, in the Toledo Hospital.

He was born May 13, 1908, in Bedford County, Pa., to Calvin and Jenny (Shaffer) Ellenberger. His first wife, Hilma (Mazey) Ellenberger, died in 1932. On March 11, 1936, he married Mary Bowers, who survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Russell of Tiffin; two daughters, Marlene Lehman of Bellevue and Esther Weyant of Burgoon; two brothers, James of Burgoon and Wilson of Fremont; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sheldon; and three sisters, Gladys Flora, Garnet Vroman and Gail Holt.

Mr. Ellenberger, who had been employed as a general laborer at the Basic Inc., Bettsville, also owned and operated Ellenberger General Store, which later became Ellenberger Antiques and Watch Repair.

A 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Fremont and the National Watch and Clock Club.

Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Wednesday at the Nopper-Veh Funeral Home, Gibsonburg,. The service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Smith cemetery, Burgoon.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Anthony George Adams
TRW Corp. retiree

Anthony George Adams, 92, 72 Westwood Drive, died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2000, in St. Vincent-Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born March 29, 1908, in Cleveland, to Joseph and Antoinnette (Kable) Adamitis. On Oct. 19, 1938, in Cleveland, he married Lillian G. Burger, who died Feb. 28, 1993.

Survivors include: a son, Tom Adams of Tiffin; three grandchildren, Scott, Kieth and Tim Adams; and two great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Ann Shiel and Eleanor Adams; and three brothers, Frank, Joe and Tom Adams, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Adams, a graduate of Central High School, Cleveland, retired from the accounting department at TRW Corp. in Cleveland.

An avid golfer, he had played professional basketball for various teams.

The Rev. Dr. Arthur Geyh will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Margaret A. Buchmann
Former Attica resident

Margaret A. Buchmann, 79, of Tiffin, formerly of Attica, died Sunday morning, July 16, 2000, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

Arrangements are pending at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville.

Bayard Preston 'Bud' Herndon
Retired Tecumseh Products manager

Bayard Preston "Bud" Herndon, 91, of 404 Glenview Drive, Fostoria, formerly of Findlay and Tecumseh, Mich., died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2000, in the Fostoria Community Hospital.

He was born Aug. 12, 1908, in Columbus, Ind., to Alvin G. and Margaret (Marquart) Herndon. His wife, Marie F. (Harbourne) Herndon, whom he married July 26, 1930, in Louisville, Ky., survives in Fostoria.

Survivors also include: a son, Dr. Bayard P. Herndon II of Hooksett, N.H.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Laura M.) Noble and Linda L. Herndon, both of Fostoria; two sisters, Janice Ross and Janece Hartman, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were a grandchild; two brothers, Paul and James Herndon; and two sisters, Laura Mildred Burge and Neva Shaw.

Mr. Herndon retired in 1973 as general manager of Tecumseh Products, Tucumseh, after 18 years of service. He had previously been employed as vice president of Peerless Gear and Machine in Dunkirk, Ohio, where he had worked for more than 20 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Masonic Temple, Findlay.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Interment will take place in Vallonia, Ind.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Fostoria Community Hospital Home Health Care.

Daniel E. Molina Jr.
Fostoria native

Daniel E. Molina Jr., 20, of Helena, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, in the Medical College of Ohio Hospital, Toledo, due to injuries received in an auto accident in Findlay.

He was born June 21, 1980, in Fostoria, to Daniel Molina and Lusia (Reyes) Green. His father survives in Findlay and his mother and step-father, Lucy and Terry Green, survive in Helena.

Other survivors include: his special friend, Jennifer Houck of Tiffin; two sisters, April and Tiffany Molina of Helena; two half-brothers, Gary and Cody Green, both of Helena; two step-brothers, Ronald Green of Indiana and Chad Green of Fremont; maternal grandmother, Felipa Palacios of Fremont; and paternal grandfather, Benito Molina of Findlay.

His maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother, are deceased.

Mr. Molina, who was active in Victory Christian Fellowship, was employed as a laborer at Aeroquip Inoac.

He enjoyed playing sports and was presently serving as a private in the Weapons Co. in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, Perrysburg.

Pastor Scott Robles will conduct the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in Victory Christian Fellowship. Interment will be in Four Mile House cemetery, where his U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Unit will provide military honors at the graveside.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Wonderly-Horvath Funeral Home, Fremont; and also one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Victory Christian Fellowship "Turn Around" Program.

Donald W. 'D.J.' Johnson
Trucking company owner

Donald W. "D.J." Johnson, 64, died at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his residence at 12300 SH 103, Carey.

He was born June 13, 1936, in Carey, to the late Roy Johnson and Bernice Heck Scoarse. His mother and step-father, Free "Red" Scoarse, survive in Carey. On Feb. 14, 1958, in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey, he married E. Jeanette Myers. They are divorced.

Survivors include: three sons, Chad, Chris and Curt Johnson, all of Carey; two daughters, Julie Mullholand of Nevada, Ohio and Jodie Johnson of Sycamore; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Anita Gullett of Findlay and Patty Johnson of Carey; two brothers, Bob Johnson of Oak Harbor and Charles "Fritz" of Carey; and a half-sister, Mary Louise Johnson of New London.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Grant Johnson; and a half-brother, Roy Jr. "Chappy" Johnson.

Mr. Johnson owned and operated the Johnson Trucking Co. in Carey. He also had worked at National Lime and Stone, the Carey Times, the A.C. and Y. Railroad as a clerk and Brooks Trucking.

He was a memberof Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey; S.A.L. of American Legion Post 344, Carey; Carey Lodge 420 Free and Accepted Masons, Chapter 159 Royal Arch Masons, Upper Sandusky Council 98 Royal and Selected Masons, and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite-Valley of Toledo.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul DeMoss officiating. Interment will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, where Masonic services will be at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Dorcas Carey Public Library, in care of the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, Ohio 43316-1169.

Winifred R. Groman
Retired buyer/retail sales clerk

Winifred R. Groman, 88, formerly of 7 W. Market St., died at 3:50 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, in St. Francis Home, where she had been a resident since Nov. 1, 1997.

She was born Sept. 15, 1911, in Toledo, to James F. and Blanche Lydia (Henretty) Gordon. On Jan. 15, 1933, in the Church of Christ Parsonage, Fostoria, she married Charles W. Groman, who died Feb. 14, 1995.

Survivors include: a son, William "Bill" Groman of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Harvey (Judith) Yocom of Tiffin; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A son, Harry Groman; a brother, Virgil Gordon; and two sisters, Virginia Schutt and an infant sister, also are deceased.

Mrs. Groman, a graduate of Fostoria High School, retired as a buyer/retail sales clerk from the former Lasalles Store.

A charter member of New Beginnings Assembly of God Church, and its Women's Ministries, she also served as a former board member and Sunday School teacher.

She had lived in Tiffin most of her life.

Services in the New Beginnings Assembly of God Church will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Nolan Blakkolb and the Rev. Rex King as co-officiants. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the church or Gideons International.

Frances Ella Winters
Retired homemaker

Frances Ella Winters, 81, of 800 Mission Drive, Upper Sandusky, formerly of Wyandot Senior Village, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, in the Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.

She was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Highland Park, Mich., to Harry E. and Prudence M. (Orr) Watson. She married to Carl A. Winters in Oxford, Ohio. They were later divorced.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lowell L. (Nancy) Hosler of Sycamore; two grandchildren, Lori Renee Hosler of Marion and Jeffrey P. Hosler of Sycamore; and three great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Kenneth O. and Harry E. Jr. Watson.

Mrs. Winters, a homemaker, was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Dayton.

A 1936 graduate of Stivers High School, Dayton, she also was a member of the Delta Theta Tau Social Sorority, Dayton, and had served as a Gray Ladies Volunteer at the Dayton VA Hospital.

She liked to crochet, garden and travel

George Kolarik will conduct the 2 p.m. Friday memorial service in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. The body has been cremated. Burial will be in Old Mission cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Wyandot Manor, Upper Sandusky or a charity of the donor's choice.
