Carol Mae Otto
Long-time Tiffin resident

Carol Mae Otto, 50, 110 Ash St., Attica, died at 4:44 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in the Arthur James Cancer Hospital, Columbus.

She was born Jan. 17, 1950, in Tiffin, to the late Roy and Anna May (Rapp) Westley. Her husband, Harry Otto, whom she married May 16, 1977, in Tiffin, died Oct. 12, 1991.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Jeffery Jr. (Misty) Williams of Bellevue; a son, Lewis Otto of Attica; a step-son, Stanley Otto of Tiffin; a step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Anne) Conner of Fostoria; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Hoffman of Texas and Mrs. John (Marilyn) Stack of Colorado; two brothers, Larry Sherman of Michigan and Robert Sherman of Tiffin; a step-brother, Keith Wickard of Florida; a step-sister, Jackie Wickard, also of Florida; two grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

A brother, Gerald Sherman; and a step-brother, Bill Wickard, also are deceased.

Mrs. Otto, a private housekeeper, also worked for the Logan County Children's Home as a floating housemother 1970-77.

She was a 1970 graduate of Bellefontaine High School.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to her family.

Patty Jean Matthews
Rural Tiffin homemaker

Patty Jean Matthews, 68, died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at her residence at 7226 CR 33.

She was born March 19, 1932, in Lawrence County, Ill., to the late John and Maxine (Dillion) Lynch. On Aug. 13, 1951, in Crown Pint, Ind., she married Ernest Leon Matthews, who survives.

Other survivors include: five sons, John Russell Matthews of Joplin, Mo., Leon Matthews of Fort Wayne, Ind., Robert Jean Matthews of Topeka, Kan., Charles Clifford Matthews of Oak Hill, Ohio and Daniel Ray Matthews of Old Fort; two daughters, Linda Lee Montgomery of Bremen, Ohio and Gale Ann McDaniel of Bloomville; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Scott Lynch of Lawrenceville, Ill.; and two sisters, Silvia Kent and Rhonda Helping Stine, both of Vincennes, Ind.

A sister, Shirley Lynch, also is deceased.

Mrs. Matthews, a homemaker, was a memer of the First Church of Christ in Fremont.

Formerly of Crown Point, she had resided in the rural Tiffin area for 25 years.

The Rev. Bryan T. Hollingsworth will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Friday service in the First Church of Christ, Fremont. Interment will be in Pleasant Union cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice.

Martha Gillig
Homemaker/family farmer

Martha Gillig, 84, died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at her residence at 3065 S. TR 59, Alvada.

She was born Feb. 4, 1916, in Wyandot County, to Leo and Frances (Haubert) Brodman Sr. On June 10, 1937, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salem Township, she married Joseph A. "Joby" Gillig. He died Nov. 27, 1996.

Survivors include: a son, Kenneth C. Gillig of Alvada; four daughters, Mrs. Vern (Donna) Elchert of New Riegel, Mrs. Jim (Bernadine) Perry of Naperville, Ind., Mrs. Robert (Kathleen) Tiell of Alvada and Mrs. David E. (Carol) Cole of Attica; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Leon (Rose) Mathias and Mrs. Bernard (Mary) Loverich, both of Upper Sandusky, Miss Isabelle Brodman of Carey, Mrs. Norbert (Dolores) Mathias of New Riegel, Sister Donna Louise Brodman, O.P., of Columbus and Mrs. Norbert (Sally) Molyet of Fremont; and three brothers, Leo Brodman Jr. of Napoleon, Herman Brodman of Carey and Bernard Brodman of Bluffton.

Also preceding her in death were three sons, Ronald, Louis and Gilbert GIllig; a grandson, Rodney Elchert; a granddaughter, Carrie Gillig; and two brothers, Louis and Leonard Brodman.

Mrs. Gillig, a homemaker and avid gardener, also operated the family farm with her husband.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Alvada, its Rosary-Altar Society and Ministry of Praise; and the Catholic Knights of Ohio Branch 52, New Riegel. She also was an American Red Cross blood donor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Peter Catholic Church, Alvada, with the Rev. Leonard Kistler, C.PP.S., officiating. The rosary will be recited at the church at 10:10 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where the rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m., followed by CK of O memorial services.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Church Restoration Fund or Community Hospice Care of Seneca County.

Richard L. DeTray
Former Tiffin resident

Word has been received of the death of Richard L. DeTray, 70, of Northwood, who died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at his home.

He was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Toledo, to the late William and Pauline DeTray.

Survivors include: a son, Richard "Ricky" DeTray Jr. and daughters, Pam Shannon, Denise Dedtuel, Robin Dombroff and Becky DeTray; stepsons, Chris and William Babcock; five grandchildren; a brother, Paul L. DeTray; and a sister, Donna Fate.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve, in 1995 and a stepson, David Babcock in 1984.

Mr. DeTray operated his own barber shop on Oakdale Avenue in Toledo for 36 years. He also was employed with the U.S. Postal Service 1986-96.

A U.S. Navy veteran, serving 1948-52 during the Korean Conflict, he lived his early life in Tiffin and Seneca County.

He was a life member of VFW Post 2984 and enjoyed fishing.

There was no service or visitation.

Wilma E. Remsberg
Former Uhlman's clerk

Wilma E. Remsberg, 80, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at her home on Ann Street in Tiffin.

She was born July 10, 1920, in Wood County, to W.A. and Fern (Falls) Whitman. Her husband, Burton B. Remsberg, whom she married July 26, 1953, survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Taylor of Clyde; a brother, Lewis Whitman of Sebring, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Paul "Bud" (Jean) Stein of Tiffin; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A brother, Dr. Robert Whitman, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Remsberg, a 1938 graduate of Holland High School, retired in 1991 from Uhlman's Department Store in Tiffin, where she had worked for 15 years.

A resident of Tiffin most of her life, she enjoyed playing the piano and the big band sound.

The Rev. Steve Wood will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Saturday graveside service in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association or the donor's choice.

Harriet L. Harding
Former Tiffin centenarian

Harriet L. Harding, 100, formerly of the Kiwanis Manor, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Fostoria, where she had resided since 1992.

She was born Nov. 7, 1899, in Tiffin, to Harry F. and Iva Mae (Wolf) Bloom. In 1926, in Tiffin, she married Oliver P. Harding, who preceded her in death in 1978.

Surviving are a son, Verne D. Harding of Fostoria; four grandchildren, David S. Harding of Lima, Jeffrey B. Harding of Temperance, Mich., Mrs.Jeffrey (Beth A.) Lofay of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Mrs. Charles (Amy R.) Kramb of Toledo; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Harding, a graduate of Columbian High School, was a homemaker.

A member of the First Lutheran Church, she also had worked at Hayden Drug Store for 10 years.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday and one half hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

A. Stephen Weithman Jr.
Tiffin native

Word has been received of the death of A. Stephen Weithman Jr., 47, of Columbia, Mo., who died Thursday, July 13, 2000 in Columbia.

He was born Jan. 6, 1953, in Tiffin, to Allan Sr. and Bonnie (Smith) Weithman. His mother was a 1955 graduate of Heidelberg College. They survive in Punta Gorda, Fla. On May 11, 1974, he married Angela Daniels, who also survives.

Survivors also include: two sons, Michael Robert and Scott Edward Weithman, both of Columbia; and a sister, Kathy Ramsay of Flint, Mich.

His maternal grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. John L. Smith and paternal grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. George Weithman.

Mr. Weithman attended his freshman year of college at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, then graduated in 1974 from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor's degree in biology. He also received a master's degree in fisheries in 1975 and a doctorate in fisheries in 1978, both from MU.

He was an area aide at Hunnewell Hatchery, Little Dixie, and later a research center biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. From 1983-88 he supervised a statewide-angler survey. In 1984, he became water quality research supervisor and was later named environmental service supervisor.

He was a member of the Society of Sigma XI and the American Fisheries Society, of which he was past president of its Missouri Chapter.

Services were July 19 in the Newman Center, with the Rev. Don Wallace officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery, Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life or the American Fisheries Society, Missouri Chapter, in care of Al Buchanan, Missouri Department of Conservation, 1110 S. College Ave., Columbia, MO 65201.

Martha Ellen Boyer
Whirlpool Corp. retiree

Martha Ellen Boyer, 78, of South Main Street, Clyde, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Fremont Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Scipio Township, Seneca County, to William and Ruth M. (Ruehle) Hepperly. Her husband, Harry H. Boyer, whom she married June 29, 1946, survives.

Other survivors include: a sister, Mrs. Russell (Pauline) Voories of Attica.

A brother, Harold Hepperly, died in 1941.

Mrs. Boyer, a 1940 graduate of Republic High School, retired in 1978 as an assembler from Whirlpool Corp., where she had been employed for 24 years.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Adams Township, and its Women of the Church. She was a former member of Clyde Senior Citizens and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.

Visitation will be an hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Lupe Zepeda
New Riegel resident

Lupe Zepeda, 82, of 9590 TR 108, New Riegel, died at 8:47 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Fostoria Community Hospital. She was formerly of Sparta Avenue, Kent City, Mich.

She was born March 25, 1918, in Cuero, Texas, to Raphael and Marcella Aguilar. She married Domingo Zepeda in 1946 in Howard, Mich. He died in September 1992.

Survivors include: a son, Santoes Balberde of Howard City, Mich.; three daughters, Minnie Castilla of Howard City, Mich., Mrs. Jerry (Anne) Bauman of Kent City, Mich., and Mrs. Michael (Judy) Hohman of New Riegel; 30 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Isabella Martinez and Lorraine Cervantes, both of Cuero, Texas.

Also preceding her in death was a brother, Raphael Aguilar Jr.

She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Creek Community Church, Perrysburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Graveside services will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the Idle Wild cemetery, Tyrone Twp., Mich.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the United Way.

James Christopher Mumper
Former Tiffin resident

James Christopher Mumper, 47, of St. Lucie, Fla., and formerly of Tiffin, died at his residence Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Services for James Christopher Mumper, 47, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Tiffin, are tentatively set for noon Saturday, Sept. 2, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. He died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his residence in Florida. Further arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Cheryl Lee Montz
Tiffin residents' stepmother

Cheryl Lee Montz, 54, of 2048 Marengo St., Toledo, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at her residence.

Mrs. Montz was born June 12, 1946, in Findlay to Jack Dallas and Lucille (Bergman) Hile. She married Robert K. Montz in October 1964. He survives.

Other survivors include: his mother of Findlay; two sons, Lane Alan Montz of Sylvania and Christophor Jon Montz of Toledo; a stepson, Kenneth L. Montz of Tiffin; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gary (Wendy) Wheeler of Tiffin; four grandchildren; two brothers, Steven Hile of Findlay and Kevin Hile of Ozark, Ala.; and a sister, Mrs. Michael (Patricia) Manchester of Wayne.

She was a homemaker.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at the Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, 205 W. Sandusky St., Findlay, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery, Findlay. The Pastor Jim Marshall will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, OH 43551.
