Tiffin native

Jon W. Teets, 27, of 532 S. Warpole St., Upper Sandusky, died at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in the Toledo Hospital.

He was born Aug. 10, 1973, in Tiffin, to Jon E. and Gloria T. Teets. His mother survives in Upper Sandusky.

Also surviving are his companion; Kimberly A. Blanton and her daughter; a sister, Mrs. Kevin (Shelly) Gibson of Carey; and two nephews.

His father is deceased.

Mr. Teets, a 1991 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, was active in wrestling, tennis and club soccer.

A former member of Moose Lodge 1093, Upper Sandusky, he also was a member of John Stewart United Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky; the T&T Sports Lounge Pool League, Sunday bowling league at Mt. Idy Lanes in Carey and Mt. Idy Lanes softball team, where he played in area leagues.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Stombaugh -Batton Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. Lenn Geiger officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Jon W. Teets Memorial Fund, in care of the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, OH 43316-1169.

Minerva R. Cassidy
Faith in Christ Tabernacle pastor

Minerva R. Cassidy, 59, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at her residence at 12907 TR 1064, Attica.

She was born Jan. 5, 1941, in Vanceburg, Ky., to the late Floyd and Bessie (Morgan) Smith. Her husband, Virgil E. Cassidy Sr., whom she married Aug. 7, 1954, survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Rick E. and Virgil Jr. Cassidy, both of Carrothers; a daughter, Loretta Ruth Cassidy, also of Carrothers; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Ray Morgan of Vanceburg; and a sister, Mary Renchen of Bellevue, Ky.

Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Lester, Hobart, Theodore and Locker Morgan; and six sisters, Mildred Fraker, Rebecca Tacket, Loretta Scott, Jessie Fite, Effie Morgan and Agnes Morgan.

Mrs. Cassidy, who had been employed by the R.R. Donnelley and Sons Co., Willard for 23 years, had been serving as pastor of the Faith in Christ Tabernacle in Attica.

A memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, 1295 W. Tiffin St., Attica, with Pastor Tony Cooper of Willard Church of God of Prophecy, officiating.

Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. Friday until time of the service at the funeral home.

Ruth J. Stever
Sycamore homemaker

Ruth J. Stever, 93, of 301 N. Sycamore Ave., Sycamore, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at her home.

She was born Dec. 1, 1906, in Eden Township, Seneca County, to Edward and Orpha (Harter) Burger. On Jan. 15, 1931, she married Jacob W. Stever. He died Feb. 19, 1994.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Joanne) Hiler of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Stephen (Jennifer) Cassity of Shelbyville, Ky. and Ms. Valerie Hiler of Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Robert and Verl Burger.

Mrs. Stever, a homemaker, was a 75-year member of Melmore United Methodist Church, and a former member of its WSCS.

She also was a member of Honey Creek Rebekah Lodge 836, Melmore; and a former member of the Eden Women's Club of Seneca County.

A 1926 graduate of Melmore High School, she served as the valedictorian of her class.

The Rev. Kelly Paul Brown will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Saturday service in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Interment will be in Rock Creek cemetery, Seneca County.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Sycamore United Methodist Church or Melmore United Methodist Church.

Mary C. Shine
Homemaker/seamstress

Mary C. Shine, 78, of 105 River St., Upper Sandusky, died at 8:57 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.

She was born July 14, 1922, in Carey, to Walter C. and Lillie (Nye) Cole. In 1938, she married Carl McCarley, and they were later divorced. In 1945, she married James D. Shine, who preceded her in death May 12, 1986.

Surviving are a daughter, Norma J. Horness of Upper Sandusky; a son, Dale E. McCarley, also of Upper Sandusky; four grandchildren, Mary McCarley, Lisa Plaugher, Ed McCarley and Tonya Voorheis and five great-grandchildren.

Five brothers, Henry, Cecil, Frank, John and Orville; and a sister, Lucille Thom, also are deceased.

Mrs. Shine, a homemaker and seamstress, was affiliated with the Pentecostal Church.

The Rev. Greg Hord and the Rev. Robert Smith will be the co-officiants at the 1:30 p.m. Friday service in the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey. Interment will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Mary C. Shine Memorial Fund or the Wyandot County Home Health, in care of the Stombaugh -Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, OH 43316-1169.

Wayne E. Stahl
Bloom Township native

Wayne E. Stahl, 82, of Euclid Street, Willard, died Monday morning, Aug. 21, 2000, at his home.

He was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Bloom Township, to Glenn and Neva (Englert) Stahl. His wife, C. Jeannette (Miller) Stahl, died in 1992.

Survivors include: a sister-in-law; two nephews, Larry and Terry Faith, both of Mansfield; a cousin and special friends.

Mr. Stahl, who lived most of his life in Willard, was employed as a piano tuner and taught piano and organ for more than 40 years.

He served as organist at Grace United Methodist Church for many years and also served as organist at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Services are at 11 a.m. today in the Secor Funeral Home of Willard, with Deacon Vincent Foos officiating. Burial will be in Centerton cemetery.

The Rev. Gordon B. Maywood
Former Tiffin Nazarene minister

Gordon B. Maywood, 83, of Safety Harbor, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at 6770 102nd Ave., N. Pinellas Park.

His wife of 58 years, Ruth A. Maywood, survives in Safety Harbor.

Other survivors include: a son, David G. Maywood of Safety Harbor; a granddaughter, Courtney Jane Maywood of Largo, Fla. and a grandson, Zachary Scott Maywood of Clearwater, Fla.

The Rev. Maywood was born in Toronto, Canada, and came to Safety Harbor five months ago from Orlando, Fla.

A graduate of Gods Bible School, Cincinnati, he was ordained elder and pastor for the Church of the Nazarene in Colegrave, Ohio, Tiffin, Sciotovill and Newark, Ohio and Bradley, Ill.

The Clearwater Funeral Home, 2510 Sunset Point Rd., Clearwater, Fla. is in charge of arrangements.

Frances C. Reiter
Sister of Tiffin residents

Frances C. Reiter, 86, formerly of 132 E. Taft Ave., Fremont, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, in the Countryside Continuing Care Center, Fremont.

She was born March 24, 1914, in Ottawa County, to Peter and Margaret (Henz) Sloma. On Nov. 17, 1937, she married Philbert Reiter, who preceded her in death Jan. 31, 1962.

Surviving are four daughters, Dorothy Borys, Barbara Wilhelm and Marsha Grate, all of Fremont and Mary Lou Rosser of Lambertville, Mich.; nine sons, Paul, Leonard "Knobby," William, Vincent, Stephen, Lawrence and Philbert "Dale" Reiter, all of Fremont, LaMar Reiter of Clyde and Alfred Reiter of Helena; 36 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Irene Sloma of Fremont and Agnes Shultz and Margaret Smith, both of Tiffin.

Also preceding her in death were a son, Donald Reiter; three grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Sloma; and two sisters, Sister M. Leota S.N.D. and Catherine Wilhelm.

Mrs. Reiter, a homemaker, was a member of St. Joseph Church Confraturnity of the Blessed Sacrament and the Rosary Society.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Fremont.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday in the Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home, Fremont, where a wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Joe Grade School Tuition Fund or Hospice of Memorial Hospital.

Juanita V. Knierim
Ford Motor Co. retiree

Former Fostoria resident, Juanita V. Knierim, 88, of 12 Waverly Ave., Little Falls, N.Y., died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in the Little Falls Hospital.

She was born June 16, 1912, in Wood County, to Benjamin and Mabel (Fry) Haughawout. Her husband, Henry Knierim, whom she married in Wauseon, died April 18, 1967.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. John (Cynthia L.) Grau of Little Falls; two brothers, Maxwell Haughawout of Monroeville, Mich. and Wallace Haughawout of Fostoria; and a grandchild.

Three brothers, Floyd, Claude and Thurman Haughawout; and a sister, Gertrude Correll, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Knierim, a graduate of Bloomdale High School, retired in 1972, from the Ford Motor Co. (now Honeywell) in Fostoria, after 30 years of employment.

A former member of Hope Lutheran Church, Fostoria, she was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls.

The Rev. Carl Kessler of Hope Lutheran Church, will be the officiant at the 1:30 p.m. Sunday service in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church.

Kenneth K. Kuntz
Tiffin native

Kenneth K. Kuntz, 78, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at his home at 852 Lanier Drive, Madison, Ind., following a sudden illness.

He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Tiffin, to Raymond and Edna (Lorentz) Kuntz. His wife, Betty J. (Schatzman) Kuntz, preceded him in death Feb. 11, 2000.

Surviving are eight daughters, Karen K. Hansen of Clear Lake, Calif., Diana J. Lewis of Jeffersonville, Ind., Judith A. Snay of Indianapolis, Ind., Rebecca M. Hammond of Louisville, Ky., Patricia E. Combs of Columbus, Ind., Stephanie J. "Peach" Helmintoller of Tucson, Ariz., Laura L. Feider of Madison, Ind. and Linda K. Hommel of Milton, Ky.; a son, David A. Kuntz of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death was a sister, Rita Lonsway.

Mr. Kuntz, a 1940 graduate of a Tiffin high school, was the former owner/operator of Kuntz's Restaurant on Madison's hilltop and was owner/broker of Ken Kuntz Realty, retiring in 1999.

He enjoyed golfing and for many years piloted small aircraft. He also was a HAM radio operator; a member of Madison Post 1969 VFW; Jefferson Post 9 American Legion; Madison Elks 524; Madison Moose 765, the Association of Real Estate Brokers and was a Kentucky Colonel.

A U.S. Army T3 veteran, he served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, participating in the battle campaigns to liberate Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.

Also a federal employee, he was transferred to the former Jefferson Proving Ground in 1965, where he was assigned as an instrumentation supervisor. He retired from JPG in 1978 as a department head.

Services in the Morgan-Webster-Nay Funeral Home, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison, with the Rev. William Ehalt officiating, will be private. Interment will be in Indiana Veterans Memorial cemetery, Madison.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Heart of Madison Habitat for Humanity.

Russell 'Russ' Kerns
Former area resident

Russell "Russ" Kerns, 79, of California, formerly of Fremont, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Marshall Hospital, Placerville, Calif. He was born Nov. 10, 1920, to Elvin and Hazel Josephine (Kuns) Kerns. He married his wife, Helen Ruth Harris, in 1946. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, James D. Kerns of Dewey, Ariz., and Jon R. Kerns of Fremont; two daughters, Patricia A. Kerns of Columbus and Linda S. Kerns of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Irene Paul of Perrysburg; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Kerns was a 1937 graduate of Gibsonburg High School and was a professional baseball player from 1939 until 1953, playing for the Detroit Tigers and the Toledo Glass Sox (later named the Toledo Mud Hens). He was also the owner/operator of the H & R Farm Service, dealing with the construction of grain storage bins and steel farm buildings.

The services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont, where the body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery.

Visitation hours will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Nopper-Karlovetz Mortuary in Fremont.

Memorials may be made to the church or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Raymond E. Digby Sr.
Former Tiffin resident

Raymond E. Digby Sr., 58, of Georgetown, Ill., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at his home. He was born June 14, 1942, in Tiffin to Charles and Helen (Craun) Digby. He married Janice Gravelle March 8, 1968. She survives.

Other survivors include: his mother; three daughters, Tonya Snead of Peoria, Ill., Marcie from Toledo and Crystal Conley from Tiffin; three sons, Raymond Digby Jr. of Danville, Ill., Ryan Digby of Georgetown and Keith Digby of Catlin, Ill.; two brothers, Gary and Chuck Digby of Tiffin; three sisters, Paula, Gertrude and Judy, all of Tiffin; and nine grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was his father.

Mr. Digby was a truck driver for Central Transport, a member of the NRA and the Westville Sportsman Club, of which he was past vice president. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid old car enthusiast.

The Aug. 9 funeral was at Wolfe Funeral Home in Westville, Ill. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, Danville.
