Samuel S. Flanders Jr.
Former Tiffin resident
Samuel S. Flanders Jr., 61, of Waterford Commons, Toledo, formerly of 38 Northwood Drive, Tiffin, died at 8:35 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. He was born Dec. 23, 1938, to Samuel and Mabel (Shuck) Flanders Sr., who are deceased.
Surviving are: three sisters, Marjorie Flanders and Mrs. Sylvia Dunn, both of Tiffin, and Mrs. Joan Schultz of Wharton; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Flanders was a graduate of Columbian High School, and a retired employee of Atlas Crankshaft, Fostoria, of 30 years. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and the National Rifle Association.
The Rev. Scott Hayward will officiate the 11 a.m. Saturday service at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmont cemetery.
Visitation hours are from one hour prior to the funeralat the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Kathy (Calvert) Williams
Native of Tiffin
Mrs. Kathy Williams, a native of Tiffin, former resident of Gautier, Miss., for 27 years and a resident of Tanner Williams, Ala., for the past two years, died at her residence Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000.
Surviving are: her husband, Robert O. Williams; a son, Michael Williams; a daughter, Mrs. Kimberly S. Collum, all of Tanner Williams, Ala.; two brothers, William A. Calvert of Tiffin and Robert L. Calvert of Squaw Valley, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Nancy E. Bailey of Tiffin; nieces and nephews.
The 10 a.m. Saturday service will be at the Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel, Grelot Road, Mobile, Ala. Burial will be at Pine Crest West.
Visitation will be 6-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Richard D.VanTassel
Retired Fostoria salesman
Richard D. VanTassel, 78, of Good Shepherd Home, formerly of West Lytle St., Fostoria, died at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. He was born July 21, 1922 in Findlay to Charles and Lois (Gordon) VanTassel. On Jan. 19, 1946, he married
Loretta M. King. She died April 10, 1990.
Surviving are: a son, Charles Joseph VanTassel of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Peggy Baker of Sidney and Mrs. Sue Gilliland of Williamsport, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jean Smith of Findlay and Mrs. Rachel Holman of Fostoria; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Two sisters, Helen Rita McGrain and Juanita VanTassel, are deceased.
Mr. VanTassel served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired in 1984 as a salesman for Fletchner Meats in Fostoria. He was a member of: Fostoria Elks Lodge; Sportsman Club; VFW; American Legion; and the AMVETS.
The Rev. Russell Gumm will officiate the funeral at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be at Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where the military honors will be conducted by the Joint Veterans Group of Fostoria.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
James T. Pence Sr.
Burgoon resident
James T. Pence Sr., 57, of SR 12, Burgoon, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk.
He was born April 28, 1943, in Fostoria to Henry and Ruth (Groves) Pence, who are deceased. On June 19, 1965, he married
Emma L. Robertson. She survives.
Others survivors include: three sons, Dennis T. and Steven T. Pence, both of Burgoon, and James T. Pence of Port Clinton; three daughters, Deborah Sephar of North Carolina, Irene Miller of Elmore and Peggy Cashen of Walbridge; two sisters, Sharon Brewer of Fostoria and Melissa Greer of Port Clinton; and three grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two sisters, Gloria Legron and Deborah Pence.
Mr. Pence retired in 1991 from Ford Motor Co. in Sandusky where he was a press operator.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home in Fostoria. Burial will be at Fountain cemetery.
Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Vaughn W. Nighswander
Retired farmer/contractor
Vaughn W. Nighswander, 90, of Autumnwood Care Center, died at 7:31 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Care Center.
He was born in Liberty Township June 14, 1910, to George Orton and Vinnie (Keyes) Nighswander. He spent his lifetime in Seneca County, but had wintered in Florida for the last 46 years.
On Dec. 25, 1933, he married
Dorothy Russell in Fostoria. She survives, along with two sons, Allen of Tiffin and Alton of Fostoria; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Stewart of Bettsville.
Preceding him in death were: three brothers Claude, Gerald and Dale; and a sister, Florence Burson.
He graduated from Bettsville High School; retired as a farmer and a drainage contractor; was a member of Fort Seneca Community United Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge, Farm Bureau and a former member of Ohio Drainage Contractors.
The Rev. Barry Bordenkircher will officiate at the 11 a.m. funeral Monday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Union cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Fort Seneca Community United Church of Christ.
Cleophas Otto Brickner
Farmer/National Machinery retiree
Cleophas Otto Brickner, 82, of 6018 W. CR 38, Fostoria, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Seneca County to Otto S. and Mary (Scherger) Brickner. He married
Rita M. Breidenbach Nov. 22, 1945, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin. She survives.
Also surviving are a son Ronald O. of Fostoria; three daughters Darlene Hohman of New Riegel, Mrs. Brett (Lois) Willoughby and Mrs. Paul (Donna) Gosche, both of Tiffin; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister Mrs. Carl (Bernadine) Depinet of Bascom.
Two brothers, Arthur and Urban, are deceased.
Mr. Brickner was a farmer and a National Machinery Quarter Century retiree; a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church, Bascom, and of the Quarter Century Club at National Machinery.
Rosary will be recited at 10:15 a.m. Monday followed by the funeral Mass at 10:30 in the St. Andrew Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew cemetery.
Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home with National Machinery Quarter Century Club services at 7 p.m. and a wake service at 7:45.
Memorials may be made to: Community Hospice Care, the American Heart Association; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Frances S. Taylor
Retired seamstress
Frances S. Taylor, 86, 7 W. Market St., died at 12:56 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.
She was born Dec. 13, 1913, in North Baltimore, to Earl C. and Elizabeth (Laugerman) Day. On June 27, 1931, in Tiffin, she married
Robert A. Taylor, who died in 1968.
Survivors include: a half brother, Marion "Nick" Day of Columbia, Mo.; and nieces and nephews.
Three half brothers, Ralph and Thomas Gross and Harry Day, are deceased.
Her sister-in-law, Marguerite Gross, lives in Tiffin.
Mrs. Taylor retired as a seamstress from Zinks and Heymans in Fremont.
A Kiwanis Manor resident since 1981, she attended Columbian High School and enjoyed traveling, having visited Mexico, Eruope, North Africa, India, China and Australia, as well as the United States.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, with the Rev. Jared Williams officiating.
There will be no visitation. The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Kiwanis Manor or a charity of the donor's choice.
Frederic Samuel Criner
Retired Upper Sandusky teacher
Frederic Samuel Criner, 86, formerly of Upper Sandusky, died at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in the Heartland of Perrysburg Nursing Home, Perrysburg, where he had resided since 1981.
He was born Sept. 24, 1913, in Salem, W.Va., to Samuel Frederic and Helena Hortense (Buisset) Criner. His wife, Laverne (Breisach) Criner, whom he married
June 30, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pa., survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Andre Louis Criner of Toledo; and four cousins.
Mr. Criner, a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Toledo, received a bachelor's degree majoring in French, Spanish, English, Latin and history. He also studied music theory and composition with the noted concernt pianist Dalies E. Frantz at the University of Michigan.
He taught music at the Bach and Toledo conservatories of music before attending college. He also taught at Wyoming High School in Cincinnati and for more than 30 years taught French, Latin and English composition at Upper Sandusky High School, retiring in 1979. He also served as the proofreader for the Orange and Black school newspaper and was the sophomore class sponsor for many years.
A member of the Roman Catholic faith, he also was a member of the Ohio State Retired Teacher's Association and the Wood County Retired Teacher's Association.
His hobbies included sports, music, reading, cooking, wines and sharing the French culture.
The Rev. James Holmer and Sister Barbara Jean Miller will be the co-officiants at the 10:30 a.m. Wednesday service in the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Interment will be in St. Peter cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Florence Bormuth Meek
Fostoria native
Florence Bormuth Meek, 89, of E. SR 101, Clyde, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in the Countryside Continuing Care Center, Fremont.
She was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Fostoria, to Frank T. and Minnie (Osterwalder) Bormuth. On July 24, 1945, she married
John D. Meek, who died in February 1996.
Survivors include: three nieces, Joyce Puckoruis of Fostoria, Lori Pollard and Carol Hendler of The Honduras; a nephew, Larry Lowry of California; and her caregivers, the Richard J. Kleinoder family.
Three brothers, Harold, the Rev. Carl and Francis Bormuth; and a sister, Viola M. Lowry, are deceased.
Mrs. Meek, a 1929 Fostoria High School graduate, was a homemaker.
A 50-year resident of the Clyde area, she was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Bellevue, where she taught Sunday School; a member of the York Grange; active in the Sandusky County and Ohio State garden clubs, and the Fremont Senior Bowling League; and worked with the Red Cross for many years.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, with the Rev. Sandra Hutchinson officiating. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria..
Visitation will be 9 a.m. Wednesday until time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Red Cross or the church.
Charles E. Plott
Former Fostoria Chrysler employee
Charles E. Plott, 60, died at 3:55 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at his home at 15636 Thornwood Drive, Findlay.
He was born June 17, 1940, in Carey, to the late Chester and Louise (Potteiger) Plott. His first wife, Jeanne E. (Davis) Plott, whom he married
Nov. 3, 1962, died Dec. 9, 1986. He later married
Mary Lou Lease on Aug. 18, 1990. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Joel R. Plott of Findlay; a daughter, Mrs. Ken (Julie) Roddy of Cambrige City, Ind.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Deborah) Findish of Brunswick; a grandchild and three step-grandchildren; two brothers, James Plott of Fostoria and Bobby Plott of McCutchenville; and three sisters, Mrs. Jim (Nancy) Martin of Upper Sandusky, Mrs. George (Pat) Lasley of Findlay and Mrs. Donald (Marlene) Quail of Carey.
A former employee of Chrysler Foundry in Fostoria, he was employed at Ball Metal in Findlay.
Mr. Plott, who was selected as an All-Ohio tackle in 1958 from the Carey High School football team, was a member of Fostoria Eagles Lodge, Elks Club 75 and AMVETS Post 21, where he was a life member.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Pastor Susan J. Kronbach will conduct the 10 a.m. Wednesday service in the Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.
Visitation will be 1-5 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

James Christopher Mumper
Calvert graduate/musician
James Christopher Mumper, 47, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and formerly of Tiffin, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his residence.
He was born March 17, 1953, in Tiffin to James O. and Mary Jo (Boehler) Mumper, who are deceased.
Survivors include: a brother, Stephen of Columbus; and three sisters, Marcia Kozubek of South Sandwich, Mass., Mrs. Steve (Mary Beth) SanGregory of Toledo and Mrs. Tad (Melanie) Dickerson of Sylvania.
He graduated in 1971 from Calvert High School; worked for C and W Computers in Stuart, Fla., and also worked for many years as a talented musician. He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin.
The rosary will be recited at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, with the funeral Mass following at 11:30 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. James Say will officiate and the burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be made to Tiffin-Seneca Public Library.
