John O. Fleming
Green Springs/Bellevue residents' father

John O. Fleming, 86, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2000, at his residence at 13301 Kelly Road, Milan, following a long illness.

He was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Perkins Township, to John A. and Mary A. (Hall) Fleming. His wife of 63 years, Mary Ellen (Swartz) Fleming, survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Tusing of Green Springs and Mrs. Donald (Margaret Jane) Jackson of New London; two sons, Edward Fleming of Bellevue and Richard "Dick" Fleming of Vickery; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchldren and six step-great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce J. Fleming of Port Clinton; a sister, Mary Lichtle of Sandusky; and nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Joseph B. Fleming; two half-brothers and five half-sisters.

Mr. Fleming, a 1933 graduate of Sandusky High School, was the co-owner/founder and service manager of the Sandusky Equipment Co. and the International Harvester Dealership. He also was the owner of Fleming Farm Drainage and had done a lot of custom combining and backhoe work over the years.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council, as president, vice president and secretary, church park board, church building committee and as junior youth advisor.

He was a member and past chairman of the Erie County Farm Bureau Board; where he was a delegate to Washington D.C.

He also was a member of the Groton Rangers Farm Bureau Council for more than 50 years; member of the Enterprise Farm Bureau Councils; served on the Erie County 4-H camp board for more than 30 years; received two awards for Meritorious Service for Erie County 4-H; was a Groton Township constable, soil and water board member and received the Conservationist of the Year Award in 1976.

He was a charter member of the Erie County Heritage Society; member and past vice chairman of the Milan Rod and Gun Club; board member of the Central Erie Elevator; past member of the Milan Odd Fellows; past member of the Sandusky Moose; one of the organizers of the Erie County Agricultural Society; member of Ohio Public Service, the Cree Camping Club and the Erie County Democrats.

He traveled and video taped extensively throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States including Hawaii and Alaska for Calco Travel. He also was a fishing enthusiast and rebuilt player pianos.

The service was Monday in St. John's United Church of Christ, Oxford Township, with the Rev. Wayne Chasney officiating. Burial was in York Chapel cemetery, Bellevue.

Marian L. Rice
Retired sales clerk

Marian L. Rice, 79, formerly of West Center Street, Fostoria, died at 7:21 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, in the Independence House, Fostoria.

She was born May 7, 1921, in Elyria, to Benjamin and Edith (Beck) Varsey. On Nov. 14, 1941, in Elyria, she married Robert R. Rice, who died Aug. 6, 1999.

Survivors include: a son, Jeffrey L. Rice of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Dwight (Sandra) Detterman; two sisters, Eloise Bruce of Cuyahoga Falls and Mrs. Richard (Harriett) Decker of Douglasville, Pa.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mrs. Rice, a 1940 graduate of Elyria High School, retired in 1977, as a sales clerk, from the Preis Store in Fostoria.

She was a member of Enon Valley Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, with the Rev. Connie Cherry officiating.

There will be no visitation. The Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

James Whealan
Retired church custodian

A memorial service for James Whealan, who died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in the Ruffing Family Care Center, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the Ruffing Family Care Center of Tiffin. Deacon Urban Arbogast will conduct the service.

Johnnie Earl Prenzlin
Norfolk/Western Railroad retiree

Former Fostoria resident, Johnnie Earl Prenzlin, 82, of 306 Midway Drive, Chadbourn, N.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, in the Veteran's Hospital, Fayetteville, N.C.

He was born Nov. 14, 1917, to Johnnie R. and Clara (Schutz) Prenzlin. His wife, Mildred A. (Hark) Prenzlin, whom he married Aug. 23, 1947, in Fostoria, survives in Chadbourn.

Other survivors include: a son, William E. Prenzlin of Fredericktown; three daughters, Julia A. Lewis of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Janette M. Crawford and Barbara E. Robinson, both of Chadbourn; two brothers, Robert E. Prenzlin of Fostoria and Carl E. Prenzlin of Findlay; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Wayne and Warren Prenzlin; and two sisters, Zenith Flagg and Etta Myers.

Mr. Prenzlin, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, retired in 1978 from the Norfolk and Western Railroad.

He was a long time member of Fostoria Moose Lodge 1567, where he served in numerous offices and once was named "Moose of the Year."

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

The Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria, is in charge of local arrangements.

Agnes Bertha Rumschlag
Fostoria homemaker

Agnes Bertha Rumschlag, 91, formerly of New Riegel, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 31, 2000, at her residence at 400 N. Main St., Fostoria.

She was born Aug. 20, 1909, in Fostoria, to William and Hermina (Kinney) Finsel. On Aug. 20, 1935, in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, she married Ralph H. Rumschlag, who preceded her in death in January 1980.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald W. Rumschlag of New Riegel and Bernard J. Rumschlag of Tiffin; a daughter, Mrs. Cletus (Susann M.) Reinhart of New Riegel; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Finsel of Tiffin and Wilbur Finsel of Fostoria; and a sister, Mrs. Ed (Dorothy) Weinshank of Noblesville, Ind.

A son, Leonard G. Rumschlag; and three brothers, Norbert, Richard and Delbert Finsel, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Rumschlag, a homemaker, was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, its Rosary Altar Society and the Daughters of Isabella.

A 1927 graduate of St. Wendelin High School, she was a former member of St. Boniface Church, New Riegel.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, where the rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Boniface Parish cemetery, New Riegel.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m.Thursday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where the rosary will be recited at 8:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made for Mass Intentions.

Jonathon C. Gossman
Infant son

Jonathon C. Gossman, 9 days old, infant son of Joshua T. and Amber Stapleton-Romic Gossman of 425 Monroe Ave., Lot 5, Findlay, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, in St. Vincent-Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born Oct. 21, 2000, in Toledo.

Survivors include: his parents; maternal grandmother, Jennifer Romick of Carey; paternal grandfather, Troy Gossman of Arlington; maternal great-grandparents, Joe Romick of Arlington, Barbara Pressler-King and Gene Stapleton, both of Mt. Blanchard; paternal great-grandparents, Fred Brown of Houktown and Leila and Leon Gossman of Arlington; and paternal great-great-grandfather, Carl Wolford, also of Arlington.

His maternal grandfather, John G. Stapleton; and paternal grandmother, Cheryl Gossman, also are deceased.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey, with the Rev. Gene Milioni officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Jonathon C. Gossman Memorial Fund, in care of the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, Ohio 433126-1169, who are in charge of arrangements.

Alberta L. Lammers
Homemaker, former cook at convent

Alberta L. Lammers, 91, of Putnam Acres Care Center, Ottawa, Ohio, died at 7:08 a.m., Tuesday, October 31, 2000.

She was born July 2, 1909, in Miller City, Ohio, to the late Bernard and Anna (Brown) Dulle. On June 1, 1932, she married Rudolph W. Lammers, who died July 16, 1969.

Survivors include: four sons, Robert and Nicholas of Chicago, Paul of Chelsea, Mich., and William of Defiance; five daughters, Mrs. Karl (Marilyn) Inkrott and Mrs. Elmer (Dorothy) Meyer of New Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Recker of New Riegel, Mrs. Arthur (Ruth) Alt, Jr., of Pandora, and Sr. Joann Lammers, OSF, of Grahn, Ky. Forty grandchildren and 86 great-grandchildren survive, as well as a sister, Loretta Wischmeyer of Ottawa.

She was preceded in death by a grandchild and four brothers: Cletus, Rudolph, Sylvester and Elmer Dulle.

Mrs. Lammers was a homemaker and former cook at St. Peter and Paul Convent, Ottawa, where she was a member of the parish and its Altar Rosary Society. She also belonged to the Ottawa Senior Citizens and to St. Nicholas Catholic Ladies of Columbia.

The Rev. Tom Hemm will preside at the funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Burial will be in St. Nicholas cemetery, Miller City, Ohio.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-9 p.m. Friday at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa. A scripture service will take place at 3 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Putnam Acres or the Alzheimer's Society.

Ruth E. Meese
Clyde resident

Ruth E. Meese, 84, of Sandusky County Rd. 260, Clyde, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at St. Angela Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Columbus. She was born Oct. 6, 1916 to Charles and Zeta (Rickcreek) Senter. She married John Meese, Sr., he preceded her in death.

Surviving include: two sons, John W. Meese, Jr. of Clyde and Carl V. Meese of Columbus; a sister, Mildred Downey of Clearwater, FL.; five grandchildren; and a great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by: a sister, Doris and a grandson, Brian Meese.

Mrs. Meese was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Avon, she enjoyed bowling and golfing.

The Funeral Services and visitation will be private. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery in Dover, Ohio.

The Foos-Klein Funeral Home in Clyde, is handling the arrangements.

Lucille M. Fisher
Former Tiffin resident

Lucille M. Fisher, 84, of 317 W. Walnut St., North Baltimore, Oh., and formerly of Tiffin, died at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at the Blakely Care Center. She was born Feb. 12, 1915 to Herman and Anna (Werner Fruth) Fillwock. On March 27, 1954 she married Raymond D. Fisher, and he survives.

She was preceded in death by: five brothers, Frederick, Richard and Bill Fillwock, and George and Oliver Fruth; nine sisters, Emma Carter, Edith McPherson, Caroline Miller, Esther Smith, Clara Ivy, Carol Solarik, Marie Jones, Hilda Fillwock, and Bertha Berrell.

Mrs. Fisher was a homemaker and a member of the St. James United Methodist Church and life member of the American Legion Auxiliary 539 in North Baltimore.

The Rev. Hal Argabright will officiate the 11 a.m. Monday funeral service at the Smith-Crates Funeral Home, North Baltamore. Burial will be at New Maplewood cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday at the Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to: St. James United Methodist Church, North Baltimore and/or Alzheimer's Respite Care Society, P.O. Box 113, Findlay, OH.

Charles Letterhos
Gross Street resident

Charles Letterhos, 65, of 217 Gross St., died at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital, Maumee.

Funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Visitation will be Monday at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home. Further arrangements are pending.

Elizabeth M. Gonyer
Fostoria homemaker

Elizabeth M. Gonyer, 91, of 924 McDougal St., Fostoria, died at 10:06 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000.

Mrs. Gonyer was born Dec. 31, 1908, to Blanche (Schultz) Blinn. She married Arthur Gonyer on May 8, 1929, in Fostoria and he died in 1973.

Survivors include: three sons, Robert E. and John A., both of Fostoria and James of Copper's Cove, Texas; four daughters, Betty A. Rock of Fostoria, Mary Ann Vanderhoff of Cleveland, Tenn., Sharon K. Abshier of Temple, Texas and Donna J. Barto of Findlay; 33 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were: three sons, Charles, Carl and Richard; a daughter, Virginia; a brother, Carl Hull; and two sisters, Alice Bledsoe and Helen Hull.

She was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Fountain cemetery with the Rev. Sterling Beasley officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the family, c/o of Mann-Hare Funeral Home, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria, OH 44830.

David M. Breidenbach
Allen Street resident

David M. Breidenbach, 22, of 78 Allen St., died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in Tiffin.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Further arrangements are pending.

Charles Letterhos
Gross Street resident

Charles William Letterhos, 65, of 217 Gross St., died at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital, Maumee.

He was born April 25, 1935, in Seneca County, to the late William H. and Mary Alice (Blandford) Letterhos. He married Donna Ecos on Dec. 28, 1968, in St. Joseph Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, John Letterhos of Charlotte, N.C., and Joseph Letterhos of Huron; a daughter, Mrs. Craig (Amy) Bores of Clyde; and two grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a brother, Joseph Victor Clark, and a sister, Elva (Clark) Masella.

A 1953 graduate of St. Meinrad High School, Indiana, Mr. Letterhos also studied approximately five years at the Benedictine Monastery near Green Bay, Wis. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Heidelberg College in 1966 and a master's degree in education in 1970 from the University of Toledo, where he also earned his specialization in educational administration in 1973.

Mr. Letterhos was retired after about 26 years of teaching. He had taught eight years at St. Joseph School in Tiffin and one year at Port Clinton Junior High School. He served three years as Seneca County Schools supervisor and from 1973-86, he taught in Tiffin City Schools. Later, he was head of maintenance at Calvert High School.

A member of St. Joseph Church, Mr. Letterhos was a past member of the Holy Name Society and the men's choir. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, Third and Fourth Degree, and had had the offices of: Sentinel, Pilot, Captain, Faithful Navigator (two years), Admiral and Controller (two years). He was also a member of the Ohio State Teachers Retirement System.

His hobbies included creating oil paintings, restoring religious icons, gardening and reading. An avid Notre Dame sports fan, he was a pen pal to Bob Davie and Gerry Faust.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, where the Revs. James Say and Patrick Rohen will concelebrate, and a rosary will be recited at 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe St. A rosary will be recited there at 3:45 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree will stand honor guard from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to: St. Joseph Church, St. Joseph School Tuition Assistance Fund, Calvert Tuition Assistance Fund, Knights of Columbus Elevator Fund, St. Francis Home for the Aged or a charity of the donor's choice.
