John Robert Green
Seneca East Elementary student

John Robert Green, 8, of 512 Kilbourne St., Republic, died Saturday evening, Dec. 23, 2000, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, as the result of an auto-pedestrian accident that occurred on Dec. 19 in Republic.

He was born Feb. 6, 1992, in Bellevue, to Michael and Tammy (Green) Growel. They survive.

Other survivors include: four cousins and an aunt, who made their home with John in Republic; maternal grandparents, Roger and Marian Green of Republic; paternal grandfathers, Robert Messler of Lakewood and Ron Growel of California; paternal grandmother, Paula Robb of Fremont; maternal great-grandfathers, Charles Cable of North Carolina and the Rev. J.B. Green of Alabama and paternal great-grandparents, Homer and Opal Britenburg of Fremont; and aunts and uncles.

John, a member of Victory Temple, Sandusky, also was a member of Boy Scout Troop 442, Republic, where he held the Bear rank.

He was a third grade student in Mrs. Hurd's class at Seneca East Elementary School in Republic.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Victory Temple, Sandusky, with Pastor Rick Walters officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Home Away From Home, in care of St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

The Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald R. Mowery
Fostoria Allied Signal retiree

Donald R. Mowery, 58, of 333 W. Glenn St. Lot 74, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Bettsville, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the home of his brother, Edward Mowery, 115 Washington St., Bettsville, where he had been visiting for several hours.

He was born March 24, 1942, in Cromers, Ohio, to the late Loyal Earl and Hazel (Myers) Mowery.

Survivors include: four children, David R. Mowery and Mrs. Steve (Julie) Bird, both of Tucson, Mrs. William (Jill) Near of Buckeye, Ariz., and Paige Kendall of Pursglove, W.Va.; four grandchildren; a brother, Edward Mowery of Bettsville; and two sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Glenna) Goodman of Bettsville and Phyllis Coleman of Fremont.

Three brothers, Robert, Howard and William Mowery, also are deceased.

Mr. Mowery, who came to Bettsville for a Christmas visit, retired as an inspector from Allied Signal of Fostoria.

A 1960 graduate of Bettsville High School, he had served in the National Guard during peacetime.

The date, time and place of the memorial service will be announced later. The Engle Funeral Home of Bettsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald R. Mowery
Fostoria Allied Signal retiree

Memorial services for Donald R. Mowery, 58, of Tucson, Ariz., who died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the home of brother in Bettsville, will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Engle Funeral Home of Bettsville. Pastor J. Mac Geissinger will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Bettsville EMS.

William Howard Clapp
N & S Railroad car foreman

William Howard Clapp, 77, of North CR 21, Clyde, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in St. Francis Rehabilitation Hospital, Green Springs.

He was born June 1, 1923, in Fremont, to Robert C. and Dorothy (Daniel) Clapp. His stepmother, Edna Bilbrey-Clapp, survives in Clyde. On July 20, 1945, he married LaVonne Keller, who also survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, William David and Ronald Clapp, both of Flat Rock, and Richard Clapp of LaPeer, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Marsha) Rine of Green Springs and Mrs. Roger (Barbara) Liston of Bellevue; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Phillip Clapp of Clyde; and three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Bernadine) Riegel, Mrs. John (Phyllis) Myers and Mrs. Charles (Jeanette) Hanson, all of Clyde.

A son, Michael I. Clapp; and a brother, Robert Clapp, also are deceased.

Mr. Clapp retired in 1983 from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, where had been employed as a car foreman. He formerly worked at Whirlpool and Clyde Porcelain.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant, he served in Merrill's Marauders, China/Burma and India Theaters.

A 1942 graduate of Thompson High School, he attended the First Missionary Church, Clyde, and was a member of Masonic Lodge 273, Bellevue Council, Bellevue Chapter 113, and Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, motorcycling and camping and was a stock car racer of car 64 in Fremont, Sandusky, Tiffin and Marion.

The Rev. Paul Long will be the officiant at the 10 a.m. Thursday service in the First Missionary Church, Clyde. Interment will be in Lay-Butternut Ridge cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, where Masonic services will take place at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Burned and Crippled Children.

Wilford C. Shuman
Garage co-owner/operator

Wilford C. Shuman, 87, of 125 W. Findlay St., Carey, died at 5:34 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.

He was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Carey, to Carl C. and Hazel (Long) Shuman. His wife, Colleen (Hutchinson) Shuman, whom he married April 13, 1941, survives.

Also surviving are a brother, Harold E. Shuman of Upper Sandusky; and nieces and nephews.

A brother, Glenn W. Shuman, also is deceased.

Mr. Shuman retired in 1975 as co-owner/operator of Shuman Brothers Garage in Carey, after 30 years.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Carey for 68 years; Carey Kiwanis Club, which he served as past president, Pioneer Antique Auto Club, which he also served as past president and American Legion Earl Green Post 344, Carey.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served three and a half years as an ordnance tech sergeant, also was on the Carey Village Council for 10 years.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Goetz and the Rev. Mary Tame, as co-officiants. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, OH 43316-1169.

Ruth I. Robinson
Bellevue resident

Ruth I. Robinson, 87, of Park Avenue, Bellevue, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in the Bellevue Hospital, of complications from an auto accident.

She was born Aug. 21, 1913, in Bluffton, to Le Roy and Effie (Miller) Berry. On Jan. 26, 1935, she married Charles C. Robinson, who died Oct. 2, 1965.

Survivors include: a son, David Robinson of Bellevue; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs .Lois Benroth of Bluffton; and her former daughter-in-law.

Also preceding her in death were four sisters and brothers, Mrs. Orpha Heckathorn, Mrs. Myrtle Yoder, Gerald and Darius Berry.

Mrs. Robinson, a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Bellevue, which she served as Sunday school teacher and past president of the Women's Guild, also was a 60-year member of Eastern Star (formerly E.O. Merry Chapter) now Althea Chapter, Monroeville.

She also was a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club, having been president and regional corresponding secretary for the Mansfield Region of State Garden Clubs of Ohio; a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, the Hospital Auxiliary, served as pink lady at the reception desk and a member of the 4-County Young At Heart Club and the Mad River Railroad Museum.

She graduated in 1932 from Bluffton High School.

The Rev. Sandra Hutchinson will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Thursday service in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Bellevue. Interment will be in Bellevue City cemetery.

Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Auxter Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Thelma S. Hoffmann
Seneca County native

Thelma S. Hoffmann, 85, of Fort Smith, Ark., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000 in Fort Smith.

She was born Aug. 3, 1915, in Seneca County, and lived in the area until 1959, relocating to Evansville, Ind., and in 1967, to Fort Smith. She first married Virgil E. Valentine and they were divorced in 1958. He is deceased. In July 1959, she married Edwin L Hoffmann, who also is deceased.

Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn S. (Valentine) Kay and Patricia M. (Valentine) Lawson, both of Fort Smith; two sisters, Ethel M. Andes of Bayonet Point, Fla. and Credora Cockrell of Fostoria; a brother, Richard R. Lewis of Fremont; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hoffman retired as a tailor from Beall-Ladymon.

She was a member of the Fort Smith Garden Club, the UCT and Cavanaugh United Methodist Church.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Roselawn Cemetary, Fort Smith, under the direction of the Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.

The family will visit with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

G. Ralph Graham
Retired salesman/bookkeeper

G. Ralph Graham, 98, formerly of Pleasant View Street, Upper Sandusky, a resident of the Fairhaven Health Care Community, Upper Sandusky, died at 7:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.

He was born June 9, 1902, in Springfield, to Jasper James and Elizabeth Mae (White) Graham. On June 16, 1928, in Upper Sandusky, he married M. Luella Gohl, who preceded him in death Jan. 1, 1985.

Survivors include: a son, Harry R. Graham of Canal Winchester; two grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Graham of Shelby.

Also deceased are two brothers, Earl and Harold; and two sisters, Martha and Irene.

Mr. Graham worked for 15 years at Stowe Motors, Upper Sandusky, as a bookkeeper and then for 25 years at Buckeye Autoparts in Fostoria as a salesman. He also worked for 15 years at Crow Motors in Upper Sandusky as a custodian.

A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for more than 70 years, he served as a church councilman for 19 years and was a member of the Beran Sunday School class.

He enjoyed reading and fishing.

The Rev. Jerry Elsholz will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Friday service in the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Interment will be in Old Mission cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Living Memorial Fund or Hospice of Wyandot County.

Shirley M. Bennington
31-year school teacher

Shirley M. Bennington, 70, of 5707 Debra Drive, Castalia, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 24, 2000, in Firelands Community Hospital, Sandusky, following a long illness.

She was born Dec. 24, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., to the late James and Mary (Marcel) Anderson.

Her husband of 45 years, William Bennington; and a son, Darin Bennington, both survive in Castalia.

Mrs. Bennington, a graduate of Aberdeen High School, attended Wilmington College and graduated from Bowling Green State University. She was employed as a teacher in the Margaretta Schools for 31 years.

She was a member of the NEA, the Erie County Retired Teachers and the First Presbyterian Church, Sandusky, where she served as Sunshine Lady for the Church Women.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson St., Sandusky, with the Rev. Mark Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Castalia cemetery.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today in the Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia and at the church at 1 p.m. Thursday until time of the service.

Memorials may be made to the church, Bogart Elementary School Library or the Lutheran Memorial Home, 795 Bardshar Road, Sandusky, OH 44870.

Ralph N. 'Skip' King II
Farmer/U.S. Navy-retired

Ralph N. "Skip" King II, 53, of Hamilton, Mont., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in Missoula, Mont.

He was born Sept. 13, 1947, in Bellevue, to the late Verl "Boomer" and Kathryn (Williams) King. On Dec. 23, 1970, he married Joanie Abbot, who survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Ralph N. "Rusty" III, Scott and Randy, all at home; a daughter, Helen King of Colorado; two brothers, Thomas W. King of Pueblo, Colo. and Jack W. King Sr. of Green Springs; and a sister, Kathy King of Florida.

Mr. King, a farmer in Hamilton, retired as a master chief veteran from the U.S. Navy.

He was a life-time member of the VFW in Indiana.

Private family services will take place at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Donald E. Thornton
Former factory technician

Donald E. Thornton, 54, formerly of Upper Sandusky and McCutchenville, died at 8:05 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky.

He was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Carey, to Clarence W. and Marguerite L. (Phillippi) Thornton. His mother survives in Upper Sandusky.

Survivors also include: two sons, Joseph Thornton of Delaware, Ohio and Phillip Thornton of Lima; a sister, Mrs. Harold (Lucille) Swinehart of Upper Sandusky; and five brothers, William F., John W., Larry S. and Mickey W., all of Upper Sandusky and Paul J. of McCutchenville.

A son, Allen; and his father, are deceased.

Mr. Thornton worked as a technician for Black Hawk Automotive Plastics Inc., (formerly Worthington Industries), Upper Sandusky, for more than 30 years.

A 1964 graduate of Northmoor High School, he was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, McCutchenville.

A U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam Era, he enjoyed fishing, camping, working and his pet dog.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
