Michael E. Baxter
Retired Vietnam veteran

Michael E. Baxter, 58, died at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at his home at 120 Wall St.

He was born April 16, 1942, in Tiffin, to Jack E. Baxter and Opal M. Hoyda Sendelbach. His mother survives in Tiffin. In Okinawa, he married Setsuko "Sue" Kamura, who survives.

Survivors also include: a son, Mark E. Baxter of Tiffin; a daughter, Betty A. Baxter of Fort Seneca; four brothers, Don E. Baxter of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Gregory Sendelbach of Toledo, Michael Baxter of Findlay and David A. Baxter of DeWitt, Mich.; and a sister, Cynthia Sendelbach of Tiffin.

His father; a daughter, Diana K. Baxter; and an infant sister, Sandra E. Baxter, preceded him in death.

Mr. Baxter, a graduate of Columbian High School, worked at ICP and retired in 1979 as a Vietnam veteran.

He had served as an Army clerk during the Vietnam Conflict, in Okinawa, Japan; San Antonio, Texas; Abelene, Texas, Leavenworth, Kan.; Landstuhl, Germany and Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Mr. Baxter, a life member of the DAV, also was a member of the National Wood Carvers.

The Rev. Scott Hayward will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Friday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to his family.

Alice Jean Starling
Grocery store owner/operator

Alice Jean Starling, 77, formerly of 1560 Beall Ave., Wooster and Upper Sandusky, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 9, 2001, in the Glendora Health Care Center, Wooster.

She was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Upper Sandusky, to Foster and Mabel (Southward) Campbell. Her husband, Walter Kenneth Starling, died in 1966.

Survivors include: two sons, Kenneth Starling of Wooster and Gary Starling of Port Chalotte, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and three sisters, Bonnie Young, Mrs. Ralph (Patricia) Lomax and Joann Miller, all of Mansfield.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Don Campbell.

Mrs. Starling had owned and operated, with her husband, the Starling Grocery Store in Upper Sandusky for 12 years and also worked as a nanny for 25 years.

She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and Warpole Chapter Order of Eastern Star 366, both of Upper Sandusky.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Ben Gregory officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the McIntire Davis and Greens Funeral Home, Wooster and one hour prior to the service Saturday in the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, 226 E. Wyandot Ave, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.

Joyce Brandenburg
Sister of Seneca Co. residents

Joyce Brandenburg, 83, of Columbus, died at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in the Pickerington Nursing Home.

She was born April 26, 1917, in Bloom Township to Clyde and Clady (Weaver) Kagy. On Oct. 20, 1945, she married Wilbur Brandenburg who died Dec. 4, 1969.

Survivors include: two sons, Andy of Baltimore, Md. and Daniel of Columbus; a daughter, Elaine Edmons of Detroit; five grandchildren; five brothers, Donald Kagy of Paulding, Joseph Kagy of Lake Worth, Fla., Gilbert, Stephen and Merle Kagy all of Tiffin; and three sisters, Mrs. William (Lois) Reichert of Attica, Mrs. George (Eunice) Nagel Jr. of Willard and Mrs. Boyd (Marlene) Gurney of Georgia.

Four brothers and one sister are also deceased.

She was a Bloomville High School graduate; earned a registered nurse degree; served in England during World War II in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp.; and was a member of St. Matthias Catholic Church, Columbus.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the St. Matthias Catholic Church, Columbus.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthias Catholic Church, 1582 Ferris Rd., Columbus, OH 43227.

Marcia S. McClain
Bucyrus resident

Marcia S. McClain, 56, of 872 Arrowhead Dr., Bucyrus, died at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg.

She was born June 5, 1944, in Bucyrus to Wayne H. and Martha E. (Gregg) Myers. On Feb. 1, 1964, she married Paul H. McClain in Upper Sandusky and he survives.

Other survivors include: her mother of Green Valley, Ariz.; two sons, Steven G. of Canton, Mich. and Michael E. of Pittsburg, Pa.; two grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Edwin (Barbara K.) Emerson of Perrysburg.

Her father is also deceased.

Mrs. McClain graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1962; attended Ohio University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi; graduated from Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pa. with a bachelors degree in medical technology; worked for a private practitioner where she operated his private lab for 12 years; member of First Presbyterian Church, Bucyrus, and served as deacon of the church; member of Women's Auxillary at Bucyrus Community Hospital; a member of Galion Country Club; enjoyed playing cards, antiquing, shopping, floral gardening, cross stitching and her family, especially her grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Bringman Clark and Co. Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Bob Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation is 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, American Cancer Society or Deacon Group of First Presbyterian Church, c/o Bringman Clark and Co. Funeral Home, 226 E. Wyandot Ave., Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.

M. Eloise Yates
Fostoria resident

M. Eloise Yates, 83, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in St. Catherine's Care Center, Fostoria, where she was a resident. Arrangements are pending at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Marguerite M. Philbrick
Retired business office manager

Marguerite M. Philbrick, 80, of 791 Blaine Ave., Marion, died at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Marion General Hospital.

She was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Marion County, to John E. and Martha L. (Hettler) Barkley. Her husband, Maurice S. "Micky" Philbrick, to whom she was married Dec. 4, 1943, in Marion, died Nov. 27, 1983.

Surviving are five brothers, John Carl, Ralph and Glenn E. Barkley, all of Marion, Donald Barkley of Springfield and Marion R. Barkley of Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Jean) Hodges and Mary M. Stafford, both of Marion and Helen Moloney of Sandusky; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Two brothers and a sister, also are deceased.

Mrs. Philbrick, a 1936 graduate of Harding High School, retired in 1984 as a business office manager for the Smith Clinic, after 30 years of service.

A lifetime Marion area resident, she was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Marion and past treasurer, for 22 years, of the Marion Area Health Center Auxiliary.

The Rev. J. Weston Jones and the Rev. William Marki will be the co-officiants at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in Emanuel Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Marion cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Boyd Funeral Home, Marion.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Robert L. Ranker
Retired Webster employee

Robert L. Ranker, 79, died at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home at 7 W. Market St.

He was born March 31, 1921, in Tiffin, to Raymond C. and Florence (Frary) Ranker. His wife, Phyllis M. (Powell) Ranker, whom he married Oct. 17, 1942, in St. Mary Church, Tiffin, survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Ronald L. Ranker of Tiffin; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Patricia A.) Bishop of Bucyrus; two brothers, Raymond Ranker Jr. of Bloomville and Mervin Ranker of rural Tiffin; three sisters, Mrs. James (Mildred) Comer and Mrs. Eugene (Phyllis) Kauffman, both of Tiffin, and Mrs. Wilbur (Jean) Elchert of Fostoria; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were a son, Robert L. Ranker Jr., and two sisters.

Mr. Ranker, a veteran of the Civil Conservation Corps and the Navy, retired in 1986 as a welder from Webster Mfg., after 30 years of employment. He also mowed fairways at the Mohawk Golf Course.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Moose Lodge 846, Eagles 402 and the Bloomville American Legion.

A funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Keith Stripe as celebrant. The rosary will be recited at the church at 12:15 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where Moose Lodge services will be at 7 and a wake service at 8.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care or a charity of the donor's choice.

Lillian W. Miller
Retired college professor

Lillian W. Miller, 96, a resident of Harbor Side Nursing Home, New Lebanon, Ohio, formerly of the Seneca House, died at 4:17 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in the emergency room of Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton.

She was born Dec. 19, 1904, in Tiffin, to Paul and Mathilda (Bucher) Otto. Her husband, John H. Miller, died in 1966.

Survivors include: a sister, Rhea West of New Lebanon, Ohio; five nieces and nephews, Michael West of Trotwood, Ohio, H. Paul Otto of Boston, Mass., Patricia Anderson of Barrington, R.I., Nina West of Dayton and Jean Stanley, also of New Lebanon; and great nieces and nephews.

A brother, H. Paul Otto, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Miller, a graduate of Morning Side College, Sioux City, Iowa, retired as a college professor from Heidelberg College and Tiffin University. She also had worked at a college in Mesa, Ariz.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and the Seneca County Historical Society, where she served as a curator.

The Rev. William Smith will conduct the 1 p.m. Friday service in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be noon until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Seneca County Historical Society or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Alice Smith
Probate court retiree

Mary Alice Smith, 82, formerly of 26 Valleyview Place, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in the Hearth and Home at Friedman Retirement Village, 175 St. Francis Ave. Arrangements are pending at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Kathryn C. Meyer
Bellevue homemaker

Kathryn C. Meyer, 84, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her residence at 259 Northwest St., Bellevue.

She was born May 18, 1916, in Hunters Valley, Pa., to Luther and Maude (White) Charles. On Oct. 7, 1936, in Sandusky St. Mary's Catholic Church, she married Otto Meyer. He died Feb. 11, 1982.

Surviving are a son, Thomas Meyer of Pinckney, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Kathleen) Kass Kalvig and Virginia "Ginny" Miller, both of Bellevue; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandsons.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Madelyn "Mady" Brotzki; four brothers, Eugene, Robert, William and George Charles; and a sister, Esther Milkie.

Mrs. Meyer, a homemaker, was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.

She also was a member of Four County Young at Heart Senior Center, which she served as past president, started the Kazoo Band and was a member of its Art and Painting Class.

An avid reader and gardener, she served for seven years as a Bloodmobile chairman.

Mrs. Meyer was the recipient of the Resident of the Year award at the Rotary Commons and honored as Huron County Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year at the Ohio State Fair in 1990.

The Rev. Robert Tucceri will be the celebrant at the 11 a.m. Friday service in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery, Sandusky.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the Foos and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue, where a wake service will take place at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School or the United In Purpose -Renewed in Spirit Fund.

Neva Gertrude Dunlap
Retired beautician

Neva Gertrude Dunlap, 84, of 546 Cavanaugh Court, Upper Sandusky, died at 10:34 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in the Fairhaven Health Care Community, Upper Sandusky.

She was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Wyandot County, to Harley and Cuba (Norris) Hankins. On May 24, 1946, in Upper Sandusky, she married Nevon N. Dunlap. He died July 24, 1955.

A sister, Bernice Lindig of Columbus, survives.

Two brothers, Darrel and Ralph Hankins, also are deceased.

Mrs. Dunlap, a volunteer at the Wyandot County Humane Society, retired in 1978 as a beautician, after more than 50 years of employment. She had attended Capital School of Cosmetology in Columbus.

She had been honored as one of the oldest parishioners of the Marseilles United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Fairhaven Health Care Community Chapel, with the Rev. Cathy Wirth and Pastor Kevin Pees co-officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Wyandot County Humane Society, Hospice of Wyandot County or a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351, which are in charge of arrangements.

Minnie Fletcher
Carey centenarian

Minnie Fletcher, 100, formerly of Carey, died in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay, at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001.

Arrangements are pending at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey.
