Minnie Marie Schreiner
Retired Autolite Company employee

Minnie Marie Schreiner, 92, formerly of 227 Sycamore St., Fostoria, died at 3:45 a.m. in the Bethesda Care Center in Fremont. She was born Oct. 28, 1908 to John and Delphine (LeClair) Kauffman. She married Wilfred "Dutch" Schreiner on Sept. 23, 1930 at St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria, he died July 22, 1980.

Surviving include: three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Sauber of Fostoria, Mrs. Norma Hibbard of Leesburg, Fla., and Mrs. Patricia Smola of Fremont; two sisters, Mrs. Olive Gillig of Fostoria, and Clara Kramer of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, Edward Kauffman of Tell City, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a great-great grandson.

Also deceased are a daughter, Opal Benjamin; a son, Carl Schreiner; three brothers; a sister; and a grandchild.

Mrs. Schreiner retired in 1969 from the Autolite Company in Fostoria after 23 years of employment. She was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Wendelin Parish cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 7-9 p.m., tonight, and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 8:30 p.m., tonight, and a Rosary will be recited at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Wendelin Catholic Church.

Margery M. Wall
Republic resident

Margery M. Wall, 73, of 1840 North Twp. Rd. 77, Republic, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin. She was born Nov. 19, 1927, in Adams Twp., Seneca County, to Howard and Marie (Gooding) Williams. On Sept. 25, 1948, in Fireside, Ohio, she married Darl E. Wall, and he survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Spencer Wall of Perrysburg, H. Andrew Wall of Attica, and George S. Wall of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; four brothers, Wenzel Williams of Wauseon, Howard Williams, Jr. of Bellevue, Richard Williams of Delano, Calif., and Robert Williams of Monclova, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Also deceased is a sister, Alta Jean Groman.

Mrs. Wall was a 1945 graduate of Thompson High School, a member of the Republic United Church of Christ, a former member of the Church Womens United, member of the Wade Benfer American Legion Post 404 Ladies Auxiliary in Republic, and the Bloomville Navy Mothers Club.

The Rev. Jeffrey King will officiate the 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2001 funeral services at the Republic United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Armstrong cemetery, Republic.

Visitation hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 South SR 19, Bloomville. The American Legion Ladies will conduct auxiliary services at 7 p.m., Sunday.

Memorials may be made to the Tiffin/Seneca County Alzheimer Support Group; the American Diabetes Association; the Republic United Church of Christ and/or to the charity of the donor's choice.

William Griffin
Former area resident

William Griffin, 77, of 230 North Star Rd., Newark, Del., formerly of Fostoria, died on Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 in Tyrone, Penn., following a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 3, 1921 in Tyrone Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Teeple Griffin whom he married in St. Wendelin Church, Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a son, David; a daughter, Susan; two grandsons; a brother, Joseph of Cincinnati; and two sisters-in-law, Mar Jean Kinn and Kathleen Fiegelist, both of Tiffin.

Mr. Griffin was a graduate of Penn State and a Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a salesman for the Dur-Iron Pump Company in Dayton.

The Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday morning.

Raymond S. Thiry
Former Fostoria resident

Raymond S. "Dutch" Thiry, 93, formerly of 712 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in St. Catherine's Care Center, Findlay.

He was born March 26, 1907, in New Riegel to Joseph and Magdalena (Hilger) Thiry. He married Dorothy Mahler Oct. 29, 1930, in Monroe, Mich. She died in 1961. He married Lucille A. Prowant in 1969 in St. Wendelin Catholic Church. She died Aug. 15, 1990.

Survivors include nieces and nephews and a brother, Albert, of Parma.

Two brothers, Oscar and Charles Sr., and a sister, Mae Zender, preceded him in death.

He was a retired sales coordinator and delivery operator for Home Furniture Co., Toledo, and a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church.

The rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Wendelin Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. and burial in the St. Wendelin Parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Wendelin Church and Schools.

Aleda H. Peck
Attica school teacher

Aleda H. Peck, 89, formerly of Attica and most recently of 370 Howard St., Apt. 14, Willard, died at 6:10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Hillside Acres Nursing Home, Willard.

She was born May 3, 1911, in Richmond Township, to the late William T. and Pearl (Fast) Hershiser. She married Floyd P. Peck June 13, 1936. He died Aug. 8, 1985.

She is survived by several nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Peck was a 1928 graduate of Willard High School; graduated with a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University; and later completed her master's at Bowling Green State University. She taught and was a guidance counselor for the Attica schools for 36 years; was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church where she served as various officers including church secretary for 30 years and lay delegate to annual conference; was 4-H adviser in the 1940s, a former member of chapter of the OES serving as secretary and past worthy matron and state representative; OES 189 Tiffin Chapter, past mother advisor of Willard Rainbow Girls, Knights Templer Ladies Club of Tiffin, Dendarah 10 of Toledo, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Delta Cappa Gamma Society International.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Attica United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Kalb and the Rev. Malcom Brook officiating. Burial will be in the Attica-Venice Township cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, 1295 W. Tiffin St., Attica.

Memorials may be made to the Attica United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 472, Attica, OH 44807; or the Seneca East Public Library, P.O. Box 572, Attica, OH 44807.

Paulyne Shurts
Former Tiffin librarian

Paulyne Shurts, 83, of North Canton died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Aultman Hospital. She married Don "Joe" Shurts and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include: a son, Gene Moody of Key West, Fla.; a daughter, Michelle Flechtner of North Canton; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was a librarian at the Tiffin Public Library; a long-time member of D.A.R.; and a member of the Mayflower Society, which enabled her to enjoy her love of genealogy research.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 3, in Faith United Methodist Church, North Canton, with Dr. Alan Kimber officiating. The family will receive friends during a luncheon following the service.

Memorials may be made to Heather Ridge Special Activity Fund, 913 Pittsburg Ave., NW, North Canton, OH 44720, or to Faith United Methodist Church Columbarium Fund.

Arrangements are by Karlo and Sons Funeral Home, North Canton.

Robert H. Mapes
Tiffin resident's father

Robert H. Mapes, 76, of 241 W. Findlay St., Carey, died at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at The Heritage, Findlay.

He was born Nov. 5, 1924, in Ada, to Harry B. and Gertrude (Miller) Mapes. He married Peggy Lee Coons Nov. 28, 1946. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, R. Dan Mapes of Carey; two daughters, Mrs. David (Melinda) Schnell of Boulder Junction, Wis., and Mrs. Tim (Cindy) Bridinger of Tiffin; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Jackie) Westall of Venice, Fla., and Mrs. Gene (Sue) Eingle of Carey.

A grandson, Trevor Daniel Mapes, preceded him in death.

He was a 1943 graduate of Carey High School and a 1949 graduate of Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy. As a pharmacist he owned and operated Mapes Rexall Drug in Carey for 40 years and retired in 1990. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a Merchant Marine. Memberships included: Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey; Ohio Pharmacist Association; Northwest Ohio Pharmacy Association; Carey Lodge 420 F&AM; Carey Chapter 159 RAM; Upper Sandusky Council 98 R&SM; Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo; life member of BPOE 83 Upper Sandusky; American Legion Post 344 of Carey; former member of: Carey Kiwanis Club, Carey Jaycees, Carey Community Improvement Corp., Carey Conservation Club and Carey Businessmen's Association; served on Wyandot County Board of Health, Board of Trustees for Blanchard Valley Hospital, board of former People's Bank in Carey, and Carey Board of Zoning Appeals; and was an avid fisherman.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey, with the Rev. Paul DeMoss officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, and one hour prior to the service at the church. A Masonic Service will be at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church or Bridge Hospice c/o Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, OH 43316-7520.

Clair M. Colburn, Jr.
Fostoria resident's father

Clair M. Colburn, Jr., 67, of Steubenville died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Trinity West, Steubenville.

He was born in Columbus July 24, 1933, to C. Marvin and Velma (Roberts) Colburn, who preceded him in death as did a brother, Ronald Colburn.

He married Darlene L. Hauck Nov. 26, 1955. She survives along with: two sons, Jeffrey Colburn of Fostoria and Curt Colburn of Lewis Center; two daughters, Robin Ricker of Dublin and Mrs. Bruce Tankovich of Heath; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and two sisters, Mrs. John (Linda) Hauck of Rockbridge and Karla Colburn of Whitehall.

He was a graduate of Columbus East High School, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired manager of Columbia Gas of Ohio with 42 years of service at Columbus, Newark, Logan, Tiffin and Steubenville/Wintersville. He was a member of Jefferson County Mental Health Alcohol and Drug Addiction Board. Past memberships include: Hilliard Ohio Optimists; Newark Lions Club; Logan-Rotary, Chamber of Commerce Board and United Way Campaign; Tiffin-Rotary, Junior Achievement, United Way Board of Directors; president, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Steubenville-Rotary, Jefferson County United Way Campaign Division Chairman, board member and past president of Jefferson County American Red Cross Board, past chairman of Fort Steuben Council of Boy Scouts of America Board, board member and past chairman of Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, past president of Community Improvement Corp., Jefferson County Republican Party Central Committee and vice chairman of Executive Committee, Jefferson County Board of Elections from 1992-1996; an avid reader and loyal fan of Ohio State and Cleveland Browns football teams.

The service will be at 8:30 p.m. today at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville, with the Rev. Jeff Proya and Mr. W. Curtis Klein officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Columbus. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Geraldine A. Bettinger
Former Tiffin resident

Geraldine A. Bettinger, 87, of Toledo, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in her home.

She was one of six children born to Joseph and Anna (Kirby) Fry on a farm near Tiffin. She was the widow of Theron B. Brown, a former Toledo municipal judge who died in 1966, and Martin Bettinger who was affiliated with Toledo Edison as an engineer. Surviving are: two sons, Theron B. Brown Jr. of Toledo and Dennis G. Brown of Euclid; a stepson, Phillip Bettinger; a daughter, Sheila M. Towns of Novato, Calif.; seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

She was an elementary school teacher at St. Agnes School for four years; taught 21 years in the Toledo Public Schools where 18 of those years were at Cherry School where she retired in 1977. Memberships included: Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Education Association; 28-year member of St. Catherine's Parish and its Rosary and Altar Society and a member of Christ the King Parish since 1980; active in The Holy Spirit Prayer Group and the Theotokos Apostolate for those who have made a pilgrimage to Medjudorje.

Services were Jan. 19. The Coyle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to St. Catherine's Church Building Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Daniel D. Goshe
Virginia Avenue resident

Daniel D. Goshe, 68, of 78 Virginia Ave. died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at his home.

Visitation and funeral services are pending at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Jeffrey L. 'Chip' Wagner
Tiffin resident

Jeffrey L. "Chip" Wagner, 43, 202 Miami St., died at 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. Arrangements are pending at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Alfred C. 'Woody' Woods
Railroad retiree

Alfred C. "Woody" Woods, 78, of 216 E. Culbertson St., Fostoria, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at his home.

He was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Findlay, to the late William G. and Malinda (Blunk) Woods.

A half-sister, Edith Chamness of Atwater, Calif. survives.

Also preceding him in death were: three brothers, Elmer, William and Harold Woods; and three sisters, Fairy Terrill, Ethel Coblery and Agnes Powell.

Mr. Woods retired from both the Nickel Plate Road and the Norfolk and Southern Railroads and also retired, after 14 years as a traveling auditor, from the Loyal Order of Moose.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, he was the recipient of a Bronze Star and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

He was a member of American Legion Post 73, VFW Post 421, Eagles Aeries 430, Fostoria United Sportsman and Moose Lodge 1567, where he received the Pilgrim Degree, all of Fostoria.

He attended the First Baptist Church, Fostoria.

The Rev. David Chapman will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Wednesday service in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside services will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria..

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Moose Lodge Pilgrim memorial service will be at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Clair M. Colburn Jr.
Father of Fostoria resident

Memorial services for Clair M. Colburn Jr., 67, of Steubenville, who died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Steubenville, will take place at 2 p.m., Feb. 10 in the Worthington-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, 6699 N. High St., Columbus. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the memorial service. Memorials may be made to the Childrens Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 16810, Columbus, OH 43272-5117.

Thelma L. Mounts
Homemaker/former cook

Thelma L. Mounts, 76, formerly of the Indian Run Apartments, Upper Sandusky, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky, where she had resided for the past year and a half.

She was born June 26, 1924, in Marseilles, Ohio, to Lewis A. and Bertha M. (Ward) Clark. On Oct. 15, 1955, she married Charles H. Mounts, who preceded her in death May 16, 1991.

Surviving are a son, Daviel Clark Sr. of Sycamore; a daughter, Charlene Troutman of Tiffin; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Helen) Bower of Upper Sandusky; a step sister, Eva Foster of Texas City, Texas; her foster family, Jeff and Melinda Brady of Bucyrus and Shawna Smith of Lemert; and a special partner.

Two sisters, Clara Schinabargar and Patricia Ries; two brothers, Harold Clark and Carl Burkhart; and her step father, Charles E. Burkhart, also are deceased.

Mrs. Mounts, a homemaker, also worked as a cook for 25 years at the former Evergreen Restaurant in Upper Sandusky.

A member of the First Baptist Church, Upper Sandusky, she enjoyed cooking, camping, flowers, playing cards and bingo, sending cards, writing poetry, keeping a daily journal and reading her bible.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. George Kolarik officiating. Interment will be in Frame-Meeker cemetery, Meeker, Ohio.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Wyandot County Hospice or the Wyandot County Home Health Agency, in care of the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
