Donald N. Holman
Retired dairy/grain farmer

Donald N. "Donnie" Holman, 70, of 159 E. Crocker St., Fostoria, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at his residence.

Mr. Holman was born March 25, 1930, in Hancock County to Alfred P. and Isabel (Goshe) Holman. He married Irene E. Cassidy on June 20, 1953, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, and she survives.

Other survivors include: five sons, Douglas of Helena, Daniel of New Riegel, Phillip of McClure, Dwight of Risingsun and Christopher of Kansas; eight daughters, Mrs. Patrick (Debbie) Weiker, Donna Davis, Mrs. Scott (Patricia) Miller all of Risingsun, Mrs. Tom (Dotty) Moses of Fayette, Diane Clouse, Rosemary Holman, Mrs. Frank (Jennifer) Cortez and Mrs. Michael (Renee) Amlin all of Fostoria; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Franklin and Richard of Fostoria and Eugene of Findlay.

A son, Michael; and a brother, Bernard are deceased.

He was: a U.S. Army Veteran during the Korean War; a retired life-long Seneca County grain and dairy farmer; worked at Sun Grain Elevator, Risingsun; a truck driver; and a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, Seneca County NFO and American Legion Post 73.

The Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Wendelin Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. The United Veterans of Fostoria will conduct graveside military honors in St. Wendelin Parish cemetery.

Visitation is 2-9 p.m. today in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria where a Christian Wake Service will be at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Wendelin Church or Community Hospice Care of Seneca County.

George T. Payne
National Machinery retiree

George T. Payne, 78, 25 Rose Lane, Tiffin, died at 5:05 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in the Winebrenner Village, Findlay.

He was born April 10, 1922, in Redkey, Ind., to the late Lawrence and Grace (Friddle) Payne. His first wife of 43 years, Mary Lois (Humphries) Payne, whom he married Oct. 24, 1942, died in 1986. On June 29, 1988, in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Tiffin, he Married Lois J. Brauchla, who survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Duane E. (Pamela) Robinson and Mrs. Douglas E. (Vickie) Graham, both of Tiffin; a step-son, Ted A. Brauchla of Mason, Ohio; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. W.R. (Jeanne) Welch of Largo, Fla.

Mr. Payne earned a BSME degree from Tri-State University, Angola, Ind., upon graduate in 1948. He retired from the National Machinery Co. in 1982 as chief development engineer, after 33 years of service.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he served 1942-46, with some service time spent in the European Theater.

His memberships and activities include: elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Tiffin, National Machinery Quarter Century Club and B.P.O.E. Elks 94.

After retirement he served as a volunteer for FISH, the Red Cross, the county tax abatement committee, the Ritz Theatre box office and playbill; the United Way audit and calling committees, the Board of Betty Jane Center and its annual calling committee.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Richard E. Mahlmann officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Greenlawn cemetery.

Friends may call at the church one hour before the time of the service Saturday.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care, the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Kyle Dalton Andexler
3-month old infant

Kyle Dalton Andexler, 3-month old son of Chad and Sherrie Andexler of 6528 Cooper Meadows Road, Westerville, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in Children's Hospital, Columbus, where he was a patient.

He was born Oct. 27, 2000, in Riverside Hospital, Columbus.

Survivors include his parents; grandparents, John and Cheryl Ward of Huron, Charles Andexler of Twinsburg and Robert and Joan Jones of Florida; great-grandparents, Anna Andexler of Twinsburg and Richard and Wilma Ricker of Tiffin.

Family services took place in Columbus.

Memorials may be made to Children's Hospital of Columbus, the Franklin County Cancer Society, Columbus, OH or the Old Fort United Methodist Church.

Sandra L. Gooding
Former Notary public/dispatcher

Sandra L. Gooding, 55, a resident of the Morningview Care Center, New Philadelphia, formerly of 129 Oak Street and the Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin, died at 12:21 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Union Hospital, Dover.

She was born Oct. 29, 1945, in Tiffin, to the late Allen and Hazel (Bean) Gooding. She never married .

Surviving are two brothers, Robert and Kenneth Gooding, both of Tiffin; a sister, Mrs. Jerri (Sharon) Haver, also of Tiffin; five nieces, four nephews, three great-nieces and five great-nephews.

Miss Gooding, a 1964 graduate of Columbian High School where she was an honor student, served as treasurer of VFW Auxiliary Post 2858 for 15 years. She worked as a notary public; as a dispatcher for two years for Tiffin Service Cab Co. and prepared income tax returns for many people, despite being confined to a wheelchair almost her entire life.

At the age of seven, while visiting relatives in Baltimore, Md., she was placed in an iron lung and transported by the National Guard to the Crippled Children's Hospital in Toledo.

Prior to being strucken with polio, she was a member of the late Helen Spitler's Trio Dance Studio.

She served as a Poster Child for the March of Dimes; chairman of the Walk of Dimes Walk-a-Thon in March for many years, where she also was a participant in her wheelchair, pushed by her sister, Sharon.

Before entering a nursing home, she visited area nursing homes with her mother and spent time with the residents, reading to them, playing games and helping with daily routines.

A member of Christian Missionary and Alliance Church of Tiffin, she was an avid pet lover and owned many pets. She also was a NASCAR fan, with Dale Earnhardt her favorite driver.

Her high school classmates helped her to classes despite being in a wheelchair. She also wrote an article about Columbian which was accepted and published in "Teen" Magazine.

Her family and friends purchased a computer for her while she was a patient in the nursing home and she was able to communicate with people, despite being on a breathing machine and bedfast.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Christian Missionary and Alliance Church, with the Rev. Mark Lafferty officiating. She has donated her body to science as her last act of caring for others.

The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the Seneca County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel E. 'Dan' Begley
Tiffin native

Daniel E. "Dan" Begley, 46, of 400 Cherry St., Findlay, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, in Findlay.

He was born Sept. 17, 1954, in Tiffin, to Charles E. and Evelyn (Perry) Begley. His mother survives in Green Springs. His wife, Tina M. (Twining) Begley, whom he married May 1, 1999, in Findlay, survives.

Survivors also include: a son, Seth Begley of Bellevue; a daughter, Colleen Sisk of Sandusky; two step daughters, Tara Nye of Findlay and Hunter Claflin at home; two grandsons; and two sisters, Rebecca Lands and Elizabeth D. Lacy, both of Tiffin.

Also preceding him in death are his father; and a brother, Larry Dale "Hair Bear" Begley.

Mr. Begley, a supervisor at C.B.C. in McComb, was a 1974 graduate of Clyde High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in business management at Firelands College.

He enjoyed motorcycling and music, especially playing the guitar.

The Rev. James Waugh will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Friday service in the Foos and Son Funeral Home, Clyde. Interment will be in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1689 E. 115th St., Cleveland, OH.

Betty Ann Montgomery
Homemaker/hospital worker

Betty Ann Montgomery, 71, of SR 67 North, Upper Sandusky, where she had lived since 1960, died at 10:04 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, in the Emergency Room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.

She was born Aug. 23, 1929, in Wyandot County, Carey, to the late Virgil Scott and Eva Jane (McCumber) Long. His wife, R. B. Montgomery, whom he married in Greenup, Ky., survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Chuck E. Montgomery of Nevada, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Joyce) Smith of Bloomville, Mrs. Ronald (Linda) Holt of Mt. Gilead, Mrs. Allen (Carol) Walkins of Upper Sandusky and Mrs. Bill (Judy) Chatlain of Nevada; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and a sister, Dorcas Sherman of Carey.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Esther Milum and Margaret Jacques; and a granddaughter.

Mrs. Montgomery, a homemaker, also worked at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in the Dietary Department for more than 10 years.

She was a member of Wildwood Chapel.

Pastor Brian Tilburt will conduct the 2 p.m. Wednesday service in the Wildwood Chapel, Upper Sandusky. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the church, Hospice of Wyandot County or Wyandot Memorial Hospital, in care of the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351, who are in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Ann Hemphill
Upper Sandusky homemaker

Elizabeth Ann Hemphill, 56, died early Friday morning, Feb. 9, 2001, at her residence at 300 Highland Parkway, Upper Sandusky.

She was born Oct. 13, 1944, in Oak Hill, W.Va., to the late Willard Omer and Lula Elizabeth (Pence) Van Horn.

Surviving are a daughter, Sherre L. Olmstead of Fremont; a son, Darin E. Olmstead of Upper Sandusky; two grandchildren; two brothers, David A. Van Horn of Gilbert, Ariz., and Willard "Bud" Van Horn of Tennessee; and two sisters, Peggy L. McDaniel of Willard and Linda K. Davis of Colorado.

A homemaker, Mrs. Hemphill attended Community Christian Church and was a member of both the Eagles Auxiliary and Women of the Moose, both of Upper Sandusky..

A self-taught computer enthusiast, she enjoyed communicating with friends on the Internet and traveling. She also designed a personal web page and printed the newsletter for the Senior Village.

Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in Old Mission cemetery, Upper Sandusky, with Pastor George Johnson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Senior Village Activities Fund, in care of the Bringman Clark and Company Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351, which is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Edward Morgan McFarlan
Local veterinarian

Dr. Edward Morgan McFarlan, 69, 657 N. Sandusky St., died at 12:54 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.

He was born March 2, 1931, in Cadiz to the late William E. and Margaret Elizabeth (Morgan) McFarlan . His wife, Marthella A. (Campbell) McFarlan, whom he married June 22, 1958, in Flushing, Ohio, survives.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Clark (Elisabeth Anne "Beth") McFarlan-Hutson of Tiffin., Amy Lynn McFarlan of Columbus and Kari Sue McFarlan of Weston; two brothers, James S. McFarlan of Cadiz and William E. McFarlan of Diamond, Ohio; and a sister, Martha Ann Patton of New Concord.

Through the years Dr. McFarlan and his father farmed 937 acres in Harrison County, raised milking Shorthorns and Registered Polled Herefords, 800 to 1,500 head of sheep a year, pigs and 300 to 400 laying hens.

He was a 4-H member for 11 years, having shown beef cattle at his county and the state fair. He also showed at the Pittsburgh Livestock Shows and was selected to attend the Chicago Livestock Show after winning the judging team at the Ohio State Fair, but it was canceled due to snow.

He received his veterinary medicine degree from Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine, where he also was employed as a bus driver for OSU Transportation Department. While attending agricultural school, he was a member of the Saddle and Sirloin Club and then president of the Junior Chapter of Ohio Veterinary Medicine.

After graduating from college he set up a practice of large and small animals in Tiffin, taking over the practice of Dr. John O'Niell. He was in practice for 33 years, but was semi-retired and only did small animal work.

He served on the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association Ethics Committee and various other committees; served as a 4-H Club adviser for Vets & Pets and the Hopewell-Loudon Sheep Club. He was active with the Seneca County Junior Fair Foundation, serving as past president and director and was instrumental in planning and getting construction completed for the Don and June Ziegler Youth Center building. He also played a major role in the development of the newest commercial building and the new Senior Fair office and building. He also was active with the the Tiffin Flea Market and worked extensively toward improvements at the fairgrounds.

He was a member of the Ohio Fair Managers Association; served as president, vice president and director of the Seneca County Agricultural Society/Senior Fair Board and was currently serving as its secretary.

Dr. McFarlan was involved with the Ohio Harness Racing Association; member of the Harness Horsemen's Association and served as past president; Farm Bureau, Kiwanis Club of Tiffin, Old Fort Lions Club, District, State and National Veterinary Medicine Associations, Seneca County Junior Fair Foundation; and the First Presbyterian Church of Tiffin, where he served as elder, member of its Mission Committee and currently the Scholarship Committee; and the Seneca County Cattlemen's Association..

In his spare time he enjoyed growing roses, collecting antiques and traveling.

A funeral procession will leave the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday for graveside services in Seneca Memory Gardens. A memorial service in the First Presbyterian Church will follow at 3. The Rev. Richard Mahlmann and the Rev. Arthur Geyh will be the co-officiants.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Bell Tower Fund and Scholarship Fund, the Seneca County Agricultural Society or Old Fort Lions Club.

Donald E. Dieter, 67, of Summit Street, Fostoria, died at 11:20 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at his residence. Arrangements are pending at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Wanda Talmadge-Nevels, 78, of Brookport, Ill., formerly of Fostoria, died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at her residence. Arrangements are pending at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Titus B. Alt Sr.
Norwalk resident

Titus B. Alt Sr., 89, of 66 Norwood, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in the Gaymont Nursing Home, Norwalk. Arrangements are pending at the Foos-Klein Funeral Home, Clyde.

Jessie E. DeTray
Homemaker/centenarian

Jessie E. DeTray, 105, formerly of 69 W. Jackson St., McCutchenville, died at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in the Fairhaven Community Upper Sandusky, where she resided.

She was born Oct. 8, 1895, in Lucky, Ohio, Wood County, to James and Harriet (Baughey) Stahler. She later was adopted by Edward and Anna Hotmer. On June 14, 1913, she married Harry T. DeTray. He died June 11, 1965.

Surviving are a son, Dewey N. DeTray of McCutchenville; a daughter, Mrs. Maurice (Norabelle) Might, also of McCutchenville;

six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a great-granddaughter, a brother and four sisters.

Mrs. DeTray, a homemaker, worked as a telephone operator in Pemberville for three and a half years and New Riegel for eight years. She also was employed as a wallpaper hanger for many years.

An avid quilter, she was a member of the former McCutchenville United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Elsie Worst will conduct the 11 a.m. Friday service in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Interment will be in McCutchenville cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Fairhaven Community or Wyandot County Hospice.
