Geneva M. Hopkins
Sister of Clyde resident

Geneva M. Hopkins, 72, of Port Clinton, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton.

She was born April 9, 1928, in Alavrdo, Va., to James L. and Millie (Smith) DeFriece. Her husband, Roby H. Hopkins, died in 1997.

Survivors include: a son, Ernest Hopkins of Port Clinton; three brothers, James DeFriece of Port Clinton, Delmos DeFriece of Toledo and Dallas DeFriece of Clyde; three sisters, Christine Gerogosian of Woodbridge, Va., June DeFriece of Clyde and Shelby Peto of Port Clinton; four step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A brother, Glenford DeFriece, also is deceased.

A homemaker, Mrs. Hopkins was the last remaining charter member of the Port Clinton Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Foos-Klein Funeral Home, Clyde, with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating. Burial will be in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Visitation for the family will be private.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Frances M. Zaruba
Retired Spanish/English teacher

Frances M. Zaruba, 83, of Fostoria, died at 5:10 pm. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital West, Clinton Township, Mich.

She was born April 2, 1917, in Boston, Mass., to Salisbury B. and Margaret V. (Murray) Warren. On Sept. 18, 1943, in Milwaukee, Wis., she married Lee Edward Zaruba. He died March 11, 1968.

Surviving are four daughters, Jean Anne Zaruba of Fostoria, Janet M. Porter of Fremont, Sally L. Jinks of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Judy L. Kenson of Wilmington, Mass; and a grandson.

A brother, Bert John Warren; and a daughter, Linda Louise Zaruba, are deceased.

Mrs. Zaruba was employed as an English and Spanish teacher in the Fostoria and Findlay Public Schools, until her retirement in 1986. She continued to teach English as a second language for Fostoria Public Schools until April 2000.

She graduated magna cum laude in 1964 from John Carroll University, University Heights, and received her master's degree in Spanish from Bowling Green State University in 1971.

A volunteer at Fostoria Community Hospital for more than 25 years, she was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, Fostoria Women's Club and the American Association of University Women.

She also served as a board member for the Bureau of Concern and was instrumental in its founding.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, where the rosary will be recited at 10 a.m.. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

William T. Kirk
Alvada resident

William T. Kirk, 53, of Alvada, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 14, 2001, at his brother's residence in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Arrangements are pending at the Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay.

Amanda Ellen Everetts
Risingsun resident

Amanda Ellen Everetts, 97, of 6874 CR 11, Risingsun, died at 4:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Fostoria Community Hospital.

Mrs. Everetts was born in Hillsboro on June 8, 1903, to Joseph and Dottie (Lewis) Reno. She married John Dewey Everetts and he died in 1983.

Survivors include: a son, Larry D. of Pason, Ariz.; a daughter, Ruth Ann Cress of Risingsun; 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Victor Reno of Hillsboro; and a sister, Mary Berry of Colorado.

Deceased are: children, Gerald Everetts, Elawanda Everetts and Betty Mae Miller; three brothers, Woodrow, Bill and Mora Reno; and three sisters, Georgia Kain, Jenny Kain and Eva Shelton.

She was a homemaker and a member of Church of Holiness of Phoenix, Ariz.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Engle Funeral Home of Bettsville with the Rev. Willie Sturgill officiating. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Yvonne Swerlein
Former Green Springs resident

Yvonne Swerlein, 74, of 1215 Tamarisk Circle, Upland, Calif., died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at the Christian Heritage Care Center.

She was born Aug. 26, 1926, in Green Springs to Bernard and Mabel (Everett) Hawk. On Dec. 21, 1946, in Jacksonville, Fla., she married Glen R. Swerlein and he died April 16, 1986.

Survivors include: two sons, Robert G. Swerlein of Tiffin and Jack A. Swerlein of Ramona, Calif; four daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Margaret D.) Schelb of Findlay, Mrs. Carol J. Smith of Tiffin, Mrs. David (Sandra J.) Thornton and Mrs. David (Lynn M.) Lippert of Upland, Calif.; a brother, Bernard Hawk of Melborn, Fla.; and a sister, Margaret Hoffman of Marion.

Mrs. Swerlein graduated from Green Springs High School in 1944; worked for nine years at the Green Springs Nursery; was a former member of the Methodist church; and a member of American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 406, Green Springs Fire Department Auxiliary and Tiffin Card Club.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur M. Geyh officiating. Burial will be in St. Jacobs cemetery.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Neva M. Chambers
Fostoria resident

Neva M. Chambers, 78, of US 23, Fostoria, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Fostoria Community Hospital.

She was born April 17, 1922, in Rudolph to William and Anna (Stump) Carmean. She married Merle G. Chambers on Aug. 11, 1940, in Risingsun and he died June 16, 1994.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Marilyn) Painter of Fostoria and Mrs. John (Caryl) Risk of Fairfield County; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lorence Carmean of Rudolph.

A brother, Walter Carmean, is also deceased.

Mrs. Chambers was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Fostoria.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home in Fostoria with the Rev. Russell Gumm and the Rev. Robert Chew officiating. Burial will be in Knollcrest Gardens near Arcadia

Visitation will be 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Glenwood Edwin Steinacker
Fostoria resident

Glenwood Edwin Steinacker, 81, of 832 N. Countyline St., Fostoria, and Palmetto, Fla., and formerly of Howell, Mich., died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla.

He was born April 7, 1919, in Cohoctah, Mich., to Gustave and Lillian (Fredrickson) Steinacker. He married Norma G. Mevis on Sept. 21, 1939, in Howell, Mich., and she survives in Palmetto, Fla.

Other survivors include: two sons, Phillip E. of Brighton, Mich., and Daniel G. of Fostoria; a daughter, Janet M. Vagnetti of Brighton, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Willard of Palmetto, Fla.; and a sister, Frances Steinacker of Fostoria.

He retired from the Livingston County Road Commission, Livingston, Mich.; was a member of the Coach House Square Dancing Club, Palmetto, Fla.; and was of the Lutheran faith.

Memorial services were Feb. 14 in Palmetto, Fla.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, in care of Hoening Funeral Home, 242 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, OH 44830.

Ruth A. Schrickel
Former Tiffin resident

Ruth A. Schrickel, 83, of 5895 Marsh Road, Haslett, Mich., died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in Lansing, Mich.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home with burial in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Clyde Curliss
Whirlpool retiree

Clyde Curliss, 92, of Parkview Care Center, Fremont, and formerly of Vine Street, Clyde, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in the Parkview Care Center.

He was born Sept. 16, 1908, to Marion D. and Estella (Carnicom) Curlis, in Findlay. He married Viola Weisheit on Oct. 19, 1931, and she died Nov. 27, 1987.

Survivors include: two sons, Dennis of Fremont and LaMar of Toledo; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Marlene) Reed of Middleburg Heights; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Bennett of Fremont.

Also deceased is a brother, Allen Curliss.

He was educated in Fremont Public Schools and Miller Motor College of Chicago and was a laborer at Whirlpool Corp. A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde, Mr. Curliss was a 50-year member of Monticello Lodge, Clyde, and RAM Chapter 90, Clyde, and past member of Clyde Exchange Club.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde, with the Rev. Garry Gosnell officiating. Burial will be in McPherson cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home of Clyde is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth A. Schrickel
Homemaker/Tiffin native

Ruth A. Schrickel, 83, of 9079 W. Scenic Lake Drive, Laingsburg, Mich., formerly a resident of the Kiwanis Manor, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Mich.

She was born March 9, 1917, in Tiffin, to Albert and Cora (Wagner) Boroff. On May 30, 1940, in Tiffin, she married Harold F. Schrickel, who died July 25, 1985.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Ruth A.) Brewer of Laingsburg; two grandchildren, Todd Brewer of Laingsburg and Thomas Brewer of Lansing; and a great-granddaughter.

Deceased are a daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Schrickel; and a brother, John Boroff.

Mrs. Schrickel, a homemaker, was a 1935 graduate of Columbian High School.

She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church, its Women's Circle and the Mother's Study Club.

After living on West Market Street in Tiffin for many years, she moved to Michigan In January, 1998.

The Rev. Larry Smith will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Monday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today and one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church.

William Balogh
Retired plant superintendent

William Balogh, 76, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at his residence on Sandusky CR 270, Clyde.

He was born April 20, 1924, in Toledo, to Louis Sr. and Sarolita (Helfrik) Balogh. His wife, Kathryn "Elaine" (Clifton) Balogh, whom he married Dec. 30, 1944, survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, James Balogh of Northwood, Jerry Balogh of Commerce, Mich., Jeffrey Balogh of Clyde and Jay Balogh of Sylvania; a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Jody) Monday of Marblehead; two brothers, Joe and Frank Balogh, both of Florida; a sister, Mary Tasainer of California; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Deceased are two brothers, Louis Jr. and Anthony Balogh; and a sister, Helen Gall.

Mr. Balogh, who graduated in 1942 from Waite and Macomber High School, retired in 1990 as a plant superintendent, from the Bellevue Mfg. Co.

He served in the motor pool in the Phillipines during World War II.

Also an adult education teacher in tool and die at Macomber High School, he was a member of the Church of Christ, Butternut Ridge, Clyde, where he served as past elder. He also was part of the C of C Youth Camp in McCutchenville; involved in roller skating competition and coached speed skating.

He also was a member of the Power Squadron in Toledo, Blue Horizons Flying Club, Clyde Senior Citizens, Top Hats and the Guiding Light Gospel Group.

He enjoyed riding RV's, flying, boating, fishing and teaching the Bible.

The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, with the Rev. Alek Dickson officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home, where Top Hats will conduct services at 1 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Stein Hospice, Sandusky.
