Mervin J. Valentine

Mervin J. Valentine, age 88, of Midland, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 in Tucson, Arizona following a sudden illness.

He is survived by his wife, Lucile (Thompson) Valentine; a step-son, Wayne Thompson and his wife Oneida, and their two daughters, Julie and Jina. From a previous marriage to Ethel (Cummings) Valentine, he is survived by a son, Jay Valentine of Sausalito, CA, and his children and their families; and a daughter, Nancy Rodgers, a son-in-law, Wayne Rodgers, and their two sons, Grant and Guy and their families. He is also survived by three sisters, Cleone Lynn of Massillon, OH, Sue Beeman of Centre, AL, and Leona Miller of Tiffin, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Ernest, and Harvey Valentine; and one sister, Cleora Kaiser.

He was born Nov. 16, 1913 in Bloomville, Ohio to the late John and Minnie (Bradley) Valentine. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and had worked for many large construction companies, both in the United States and foreign countries. He was a veteran of WW II, serving with the Seabees.

A Graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 at Pleasant View cemetery in Bloom Twp., OH, County Rd. 6, where military honors will be conducted following the service.

Lloyd Roberts

Lloyd Roberts, 97, of 186 Tomb St., formerly of 144 Franklin St., Tiffin, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 at his home. He was born Dec. 7, 1904 to Herber and Matilda (Westenbarger) Roberts. On April 6, 1931 he married Pauline Wertz Roberts in Detroit, and she survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Lloyd "Sonny" Roberts of Tiffin; two daughters, Joyce Buccione Roberts of Tiffin and Patricia Burrier of Huron; eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild; two brothers, Robert Roberts and Raymond Roberts, both of Gadsen, AL.; and a sister, Genevie Foley of Lima.

The Graveside funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 at Greenlawn cemetery. The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Carly Ann Assenheimer

Carly Ann Assenheimer, daughter of David L. and Pamela A. Assenheimer, 264 Main St., Tiffin, was stillborn at 3:27 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

Survivors include her parents; two brothers, Adam and C.J.; a sister, Alyssa; paternal grandmother, Elsie Assenheimer of Tiffin; and maternal grandparents, James and Marilyn Miller of Fostoria.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Carl F. Assenheimer Jr.

Private graveside services will take place Monday at Fairmont cemetery. There will be no visitation. Turner-Engle Funeral Home in Tiffin is in charge of arrangements.

John F. Baumgardner

John F. Baumgardner, 90, of 7 W. Market St., Tiffin, died at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, in Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin.

He was born Nov. 4, 1911, in Tiffin to the late Carl and Gertrude (Ehrenfried) Baumgardner. He married Luella Dehn and she is deceased.

Survivors include: three sons, Dr. Jan Baumgardner and Carl Forest, both of Boulder, Colo., and Martin Baumgardner of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Sue Shay of Champaign, Ill.; two sisters, Sister Betty Baumgardner of Fremont and Mary Crates of Charlotte, N.C.,; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be at a later date. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sylvester J. Theis

Sylvester J. Theis, 92, of 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in St. Francis Home.

He was born Dec. 14, 1909, in New Riegel to Charles N. and Rosa K. (Boes) Theis.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death include five brothers, Gilbert, Alex, Linus, Ralph and Alfred Theis, and a sister, Clarina Tiell.

Mr. Their was a retired farmer and worked at Sterling ITT for five years.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church; Catholic Knights of Ohio Branch 52 in New Riegel; Moose Lodge Post 872, and a former member of the Holy Name Society.

The rosary will be recited at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Church followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Leonard Kistler officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home. At 3 p.m. there will be a wake service and Catholic Knights of Ohio services.

Memorials may be made to Catholic Knights of Ohio; St. Francis Home Renovation of the cemetery and Chapel; or a charity of the donor's choice.

Alice M. Buskirk

Alice Marie Buskirk, 87, of rural Tiffin, died at 7:22 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Fremont Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug.. 5, 1914, in Tiffin to the late William G. and Laura L. (Adams) Shedenhelm. She married John Buskirk on Oct. 16, 1937. He preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1999.

Survivors include: two sons John (Jack) G. Buskirk and William P. Buskirk, both of Tiffin; three daughters, Rebecca Reiter, Martha Bereza and Elizabeth Beisner, all of Tiffin; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Deceased include: two sisters, Doris Harper and Adella Thompson.

Mrs. Buskirk was a graduate of Columbian High School class of 1932. She worked at Webster Industries and retired in 1976.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Union Grange 1078; Pleasant Ridge UMW; and church historian, where she helped to register the church as a National Historic Building.

Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church where the Rev. Jared Williams will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.

Turner-Engle Funeral Home in Tiffin is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Marie Buskirk

Memorial service for Alice Marie Buskirk who died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Marjorie C. Ruggiero

Marjorie C. Ruggiero, 58, of 36 Quay St., Tiffin, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, in Autumnwood Care Center.

She was born March 23, 1943, in Tiffin to Elmer Paul and Frances Rose (Napora) Reinbolt. Both are deceased. She married Anthony Ruggiero, Jr. on May 18, 1963, at St. Mary Church in Tiffin and he survives.

Surviving also are: three sons, Anthony Ruggiero III of Columbus, Michael Ruggiero of Tiffin and Damian Ruggiero of Toledo; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Ann) Bowman of Green Springs; three brothers, John and Elmer Reinbolt of Tiffin; and Richard Reinbolt of Largo, Fla., two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Adaline) Ryman and Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Heck, both of Tiffin; and four grandchildren.

A brother Clarence Reinbolt preceded her in death.

Mrs. Ruggiero was a 1960 graduate of Columbian High School. She worked at General Electric as a winder for two years and in maintenance for Tiffin Public Schools for two years.

She was a Cub Scout leader and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

The rosary will be recited at 11:45 a.m.Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church followed by the funeral Mass at noon. The Rev. Frank A. Murd will be the officiant. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, Tiffin, with a wake service at 6:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Dennis R. Lenz

Dennis Ray Lenz, 41, of 443 S. Harley St., Tiffin, died at 10:53 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 4, 1960, in Tiffin to the late Maurice E. Cook and Pearl (Stewart) Cook, who survives in Tiffin. His partner and best friend Mary Bell survives at 443 S. Harley St. in Tiffin.

Survivors also include: a daughter, Nicole Lenz of Republic; step-father, James Cook of Tiffin; a twin brother, Douglas Lenz of Dayton, a brother, Brad Lenz of Tiffin and a step-brother, Ken Cook of Carey; a sister, Toni Burns of Tiffin and a step-sister, Beverly Evans of Glendale, Wisc., two nieces and a nephew.

Mr. Lenz worked at Tiffin Development Center as a TPW.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Izaak Walton, DAV and Eagles.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Turner-Engle Funeral Home in Tiffin. The Rev. Al Wilkes will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Nellie M. Risner

Nellie Mae Smith-Risner, 87, of Avon, Ohio, and formerly of 461 W. Lytle St., Fostoria, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, in Avon Oaks Nursing Home in Avon.

She was born Feb. 17, 1914, in White Bluff, Tenn., to John A. and Stella (Hatley) Warrington. She married John A. Smith on June 15, 1936. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1966. She later married Osville Risner on Aug. 6, 1970, and he died Dec. 15, 1989.

Survivors include: two stepsons, Wyatt Risner of Maumee, and Herbert Risner of Harrod, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Nizar (Shelby) Fadel of Avon Lake, stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert (Louise) Del Castillo of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Wendell (Edith) Christy of Amanda, Ohio, Mrs. Victor (Wanda) Reynolds of Whitehouse, Ohio, and Mrs. Elmer (Jewel) Wilkins of Grove, Okla., two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 21 step-grandchildren and 27 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mann-Hare Funeral Home in Fostoria. The Rev. Charles Jarvis will officiate. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery in Fostoria.

Visitation is one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dennis R. Lenz

Dennis Ray Lenz, 41, of 443 S. Harley St., Tiffin, died at 10:53 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at his residence.

Mildred K. Brown

Mildred K. Brown, 84, of 1840 S. Winfield Drive, Tiffin, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

She was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Toledo to the late Herbert W. and Marie H. (Degnan) Vandenburg. She married Merlin O. Brown on Sept. 9, 1939, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Toledo. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2001.

Survivors include: a son Raymond R. and wife Karin Brown of Tiffin; three daughters, Julie Quick of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Thomas E. (Carol) Graham of Tiffin, and Mrs. Robert (Lois) Loar of Gibsonburg; 21 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A brother, Raymond W. Vandenburg also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Brown was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and also attended Stautzenberger Business College. As co-founder of Tiffin Hardware from 1960-1983, she worked as secretary-treasurer.

She was a member of: St. Paul's United Methodist Church; Soroptimist International; United Methodist Women; and Tiffin Women's Club.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Tiffin. The Rev. Gail Angel will officiate. Burial will take place in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home and 1-2 p.m. Friday, prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church; Ecumenical Sharing Kitchen; American Diabetes Assoc., Arthritis Foundation; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Carlyle L. Beals

Carlyle Lewis Beals, 74, of 516 N. Otsego Ave., Gaylord, Mich., died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, in Otsego County, Gaylord, Mich.

He was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Bloomville to Robert Lewis and Floral Faye (Hull) Beals. Both are deceased. He married Dorothy Alice Powell in Tiffin on May 29, 1949, and she survives.

Survivors also include: two sons, Richard Alan Beals and Randall Eugene Beals, both of Michigan; a daughter, Jane Louise Beals of Mich., a sister, Ann L. Gipson of Columbus, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

A brother, Charles R. Beals preceded him in death.

Mr. Beals was a Columbian High School graduate and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

He retired as a Traffic Control Engineer.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at Turner-Engle Funeral Home in Tiffin. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Bloomville.

Visitation is one hour prior to services Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Michigan; American Cancer Society; or North Ohio Elementary School Library Fund.
