Thurman E. Black

Thurman E. Black, 76, of St. Francis Home, formerly of Harley Street in Tiffin, died 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Mercy Hospital.

He was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Butler County, to Edgar and Iona (Dilg) Black. Both parents are deceased. He was raised by his grandparents, Carl and Bertha Black. He married Anna Pauline (Dugan) Black on Aug. 9, 1947.

Survivors include: his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Harlin (Caroline) Kuhn, Jr. of Tiffin; five sons, Thomas E. and wife Nancy Black of Norwalk, James R. and wife Suzanne Black and John D. and wife Joyce Black, all of Tiffin, Steven J. and wife Nancy Black of Bloomville and William M. and wife Julie Black of Tiffin; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert L. and wife Georgia Black of Tiffin.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Black lived in Tiffin most of his life and was retired from the Tiffin Development Center. He was a member or the Tiffin Eagles and Tiffin American Legion. Mr. Black was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be two hours before the service on Friday at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis Home or a charity of the donor's choice.

Essie Bright

Essie Bright, 94, formerly of 2817 E. TR 86, Tiffin, died 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

She was born Sept. 9, 1907 in Hardin County, Ky., to John and Nanabelle (Farmer) Murphy. She married William Perkins Sr. who died. She then married Harry Bright and he also is deceased.

Survivors include: two sons, William and wife Sarah Perkins Jr. of Bloomville and Harold "Ray" Perkins of Bucyrus; four daughters, Christine and husband Glenn David Shealy of Tiro, Catherine and husband Roger Miller, Gloria and husband Frank Klingenberger, all of Bucyrus, and Bev Tracy and friend Terry Naumann of Tiffin; a step daughter-in-law, Treva Perkins; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jessie Grey of Elizabethtown, Ky.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Perkins; five step children; two great-grandchildren, Jessica Perkins and Shelby Cox; and two brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Bright was a homemaker. She attended school in Kentucky. Mrs. Bright was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tiffin.

Her funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus with the Rev. James Hoffman officiating. Burial will be at Green Springs cemetery, Green Springs.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or the MS Foundation c/o Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home 215 North Walnut St., Bucyrus, OH 44820.

Jeanette C. Miller

Jeanette C. Miller, 98, formerly of 105 S. Grant St., Fostoria, died at 10 a.m. Thursday morning in Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria. She was born November 18, 1903 in Hancock County to Curtis and Sophia (Borer) Fox, both are deceased. On July 7, 1926 she married Alfred L. Miller in St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria, he died March 3, 1980.

Surviving is a sister, Helen Scharf of Fostoria.

Preceded in death by: a son, Gerald A. Miller; two daughters, Mary Ann and Joyce Ann Miller; three sisters, Marcella Burns, Ruth Conine, and Rosetta Bohn.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2002 at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. Burial at St. Wendelin Catholic cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria. Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and a Rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m. at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be made to St. Wendelin Church and Schools; and/or, the Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.

Janet Reid Meloy

Janet Reid Meloy, 79, of 688 Deerwood Dr., Defiance, died on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 in Toledo Hospital. She was born April 17, 1923 to The Rev. S. Leslie and Maud (Brown) Reid.

Surviving include: her husband, The Rev. John O. Meloy; a sister, Ann Poling of Albuquerque, N.M.; and children: Lynn Meloy of Cincinnati, DR. J. Reid Meloy of San Diego, Calif., and Rachel Meloy Hopple of Tiffin.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday May 6, 2002 at St. John's UCC in Defiance, Ohio.

James G. Reis

James G. Reis, 81, of 7894 S. SR 19, Bloomville, died at 5 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2002, at home.

He was born July 23, 1920, in Seneca County to Bert and Maude (Bare) Reis. He married Wanda B. Culver Nov. 11, 1942; and she survives.

Survivors include: three sons, Thomas J. Reis and David G. Reis of Bloomville, and William A. Reis of Bellevue; four daughters, Mrs. Carl (Sandra) Deckler of Upper Sandusky, Mrs. Sid (Bonita) Blankenbaker of Marshal, Ill., Mrs. Nick (Pamela) Harriman of Ashville, N.C., and Ms. Amy Reis of Tiffin; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Reis, Robert Reis and Richard Reis all of Tiffin; and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Smith of Conneautville, Pa., and Mrs. Don (Mary) Miller of Las Vegas, Nev.

His parents and two sisters, Martha Reagan and Anna Mae McCarthy preceded him in death.

He was a 1938 graduate of Melmore High School; farmed and worked construction; owned Reis Antiques; a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Republic; a former member of the Sycamore Horseshoe Club; and his hobbies included hunting and playing cards.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2002, in the St. Pius X Catholic Church, Sycamore, with the Rev. Joseph P. Szybka officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery, Sycamore.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Apirl 21, 2002, at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore.

Memorials may be made to Seneca County School of Opportunity, Seneca County Heart Fund, Seneca County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, or Community Hospice Care.

Evelyn M. Bentz

Evelyn M. Bentz, 84, of Columbus Avenue, Fostoria, died at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Fostoria Community Hospital.

She was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Wyandot County to Ralph and Florence (Beis) Kinney. She married Orville F. Bentz Sept. 25, 1937, in Angola, Ind.; and he died April 23, 1998.

Survivors include: a daughter, Carol Phelps of Fostoria; a grandchild; and a brother, Ralph Kinney Jr. of Upper Sandusky.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, with burial in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Monday.

Genevieve Marie Walk

Genevieve Marie Walk, 100, formerly of 5 Braden Ct., died Thursday, April 18, 2002, in the St. Catherine Care Center of Fostoria.

She was born Aug. 17, 1901, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Valentine and Katherine (McDonald) Krill. She married Emil Walk May 9, 1942, in St. Mary's of Tiffin; and he died July 4, 1975.

A nephew; a niece; and great-nieces and great-nephews survive.

Rosary will be recited at 9:45 a.m. Monday in the St. Mary's Catholic Church followed by the funeral mass at 10 a.m. with burial in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be 9-9:45 a.m. Monday at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Joseph H. Willacker

Joseph H. Willacker, 74, of Race Street, Clyde, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Memorial Hospital, Fremont.

He was born Nov. 3, 1927, in Toledo to Charles E. and Edna (Clark) Willacker. He married Roberta Nuhn Sept. 3, 1949; and she survives. Other survivors include: a son, Charles of Downingtown, Pa.; and two granddaughters.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, followed by interment in the Wakeman cemetery, Wakeman.

Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Charles Strane

Dr. Charles L. Strane, 71, of Delaware, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Grady Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Fair Oaks, Ark., to William L. and Catherine (Murphy) Strane.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lee; four sons, Steve Smith of Findlay, James Smith of Richwood, Andrew Smith and Martin Strane both of California; a daughter, Kelly Densmore of California; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, William F. of Utah and Patrick Strane of Columbus; two sisters, Mary Ellen Coughlan and Carole Strane both of Columbus.

A memorial service was conducted Thursday at the Bennett Brown Rodman Funeral Home, Delaware.

David Robert Puesey

David Robert Puesey, 54, 116 Webster St., Tiffin, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 29, 1947, in Tiffin to William Lowell and Gertrude (Hayward) Puesey. His mother survives in Tiffin. On Sept. 3, 1973, he married Barbara (Opp) Puesey. She survives in Tiffin.

Other survivors include: a son, David and Becky Puesey of Tiffin; a daughter, Andrea Puesey of Toledo; two brothers, William Puesey of Tiffin and Frank Puesey of Bradford, England; a sister, Mrs. Judy (Richard) Koch of Tiffin; and four grandsons.

Mr. Puesey was a 1966 graduate of Calvert High School. He was a tow motor operator at Basic in Bettsville and was a member of V.F.W. Post 2858. Mr. Puesey was an U.S. Army Veteran serving in Korea during Vietnam.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank A. Murd officiating. Burial will be at Fairmont cemetery. Military Graveside service will be conducted by United Veterans Council.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Ronald McDonald House in Toledo or Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

Alma C. Zahn

Alma C. Zahn, 93, formerly of 314 Jefferson St., Tiffin, died 8:35 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

She was born Sept. 19, 1908, in Tiffin to Charles and Emma (Heck) Zahn.

Survivors include: two nephews, Thomas and Mary Ellen Zahn of Tiffin and Michael Zahn of Brunswick; a niece, Christine and Michael King of Inverness, Fla.; seven great-nephews and a great-niece; five great-great-nephews and four great-great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Zahn.

Miss Zahn retired in 1980 after 40 years as a secretary at Russell Insurance Agency, which merged with United Insurance Services. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, the Rosary Altar Society; Legion of Mary, St. Francis Home Auxiliary.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Home Chapel, 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, with the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating, Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service on Tuesday at St. Francis Home Chapel.

Robert M. Farrell Sr.

Robert M. Farrell Sr., 86, of 847 N. SR 19, Republic, died Sunday morning, April 21, 2002, at his home.

He was born June 20, 1915, in Tiro, Ohio, to James F. and Sadie (Carruthers) Farrell. On Oct. 18, 1945, he married Betty I. (Roth) Farrell in Shelby, and she died June 17, 1975.

Survivors include: two sons, Robert M. Farrell Jr. of Republic and William L. Farrell of Fremont; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Jeanne (Lee) Jines of Marion and Mrs. Rebeca (Greg) Leopold of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Helen (Delwyn) Smith of Bucyrus.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathyrn Pope and Grace Wiley; three brothers, George, James and John Farrell; and a grandson, Andrew Leopold.

Mr. Farrell was the owner and operator of Farrell's IGA in Republic for many years, retiring in 1978. He was a World War II Army Veteran, DAV 34 of Tiffin, a member of Brainard Lodge 336 F & AM of Fremont, Wade Benfer American Legion Post 404, Republic Lions Club, VFW Post 6067 of Green Springs, and he was also a director of the Republic Banking Company.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville, with the Rev. Lloyd Linder of Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery in Shelby.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home. Hildreth Lodge 165 F & AM of Republic will conduct Masonic Services 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Verner A. Cook

Verner A. Cook, 80, 917 East Park Dr., Fostoria, died 9:30 p.m. in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Spencer to Clement C. and Isabel (Lichtle) Cook. Both are deceased. On Sept. 9, 1945, he married Margaret E. (Mackey) Cook at Virginia Beach, Va. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: two sons, Wayne T. Cook of Bel Air, Md. and Steven J. Cook of Fostoria; two daughters, Jane M. Cook of Perrysburg and Patty A. Grill of Gainesville, Fla.; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson; and a sister, Phyllis Scherger of Fostoria.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Wendelin Parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.

George R. Nisius

George R. Nisius, 59, of 50 Spring Lane, Tiffin, died after a 10-month valiant battle against cancer, on April 21, 2002. George died at 12:50 p.m. at the Ruffing Family Care Center, Tiffin, surrounded by his family. He had resided there for six months.

Mr. Nisius was born on Oct. 3, 1942 in Cleveland to Dr. George F. Nisius and Ruth (Boetticher) Kennedy. His father survives in Duluth, Minn. He married Phyllis Dundovich on Feb. 22, 1969 in Hibbing, Minn. and she survives in Tiffin.

Also surviving are: two sons, Gregory Nisius of San Diego, Calif. and Jeffrey Nisius of Tiffin; a brother, Kirk (Joanne) Kennedy of Brook Park; a father-in-law, John Dundovich of Keewatin, Minn.; four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Eight nieces; one nephew and a great nephew also survive and all loved their Uncle George.

He is preceded in death by his mother; stepfather, Alexander Kennedy; stepmother, Joan Nisius; and mother-in-law, Julia Dundovich.

Mr. Nisius graduated from John Marshall High School, Cleveland. He earned a degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and a master's degree in employment counseling from St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, Minn.

He had served in the National Guard as a sergeant in the medic and armored divisions.

Mr. Nisius had been employed at the Betty Jane Center in Tiffin since 1990 and had been serving as executive vice president and COO for the past five years. He was previously employed for 18 years with C.A.R.F. in Chicago, Ill. and Tucson, Ariz. He also worked as a counselor for two years at a sheltered workshop in St. Cloud, Minn. and five years for the Minnesota Employment Service.

Mr. Nisius was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin; and the Eagles Aerie # 402.

He served on many local and state boards and committees and was the past secretary of the Ohio Association of Rehabilitation Facilities. He had been chairman of CORE for many years, which accredited the master's degree program for rehabilitation counseling for universities and colleges in the north central region of the United States.

His passion was barbershop singing. He was a 31-year member of SPEBSQSA. and was a member of the Singing Buckeyes in Columbus. He enjoyed golf and had coached Little League through Pony League teams for 14 years in Tucson and Tiffin.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin,, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The body has been cremated.

Burial will take place in Hibbing, Minn.

Donations may be made to: FACT; Community Cares c/o Tiffin United Way; Community Hospice Care; or the Betty Jane Memorial Rehabilitation Center, all in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.
