Robert E. Haines

Robert E. Haines, 78, died early Saturday morning, June 8, 2002, at Grady Memorial Hospital following a month-long illness.

He was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Tiffin, the only child of Arthur and Rosa Haines.

Bob graduated from Columbian High; served in the Army Air Corps during World War II; graduated from Heidelberg with a B.A. and Kent State University with a M.Ed. Bob married Marilyn Boughton, the love of his life and his wife of nearly 56 years, in 1946. Together they raised, loved and encouraged their three children: Rev. Stephanie Haines (Leah Matthews) of Cleveland; Sharman Heberer (Gary Heberer) of Elka, Nev.; and Quentin Haines (Jane Ulmer Haines) of Westerville, to be the best people they could be.

Although Bob worked as a social worker with Children's Services and as a salesperson of burial monuments, he was deeply devoted to teaching high school students American government, civics and coaching sports. Bob taught his entire career at Ontario High School in Ontario, Ohio, where he also served as guidance counselor, athletic director and coached basketball, football and track.

Bob's enthusiasm for sports was not limited to coaching. He was an avid golfer, oftentimes hitting the links six mornings a week with his long-time golf pals from Galion. He could answer every single question about sports, making him a formidable Trivia Pursuit opponent.

Bob loved people. He never met a stranger and could talk to anyone and everyone about their school and sports and the passions of their lives. He was deeply caring of others, and truly interested in their hopes and dreams, their fears and confusions, their desires and challenges. Bob made friends wherever he was: in Galion, where he and Marilyn lived for nearly 50 years; in Lantana, Fla., where they wintered for 10 years; or at Willow Brook in Delaware, Ohio, where they lived for the past several years.

Uniting his love of teaching to his faith in God and his devotion to the United Church of Christ, Bob taught an adult Sunday school class, the Bob Haines Class, at First United Church of Christ in Galion for 41 years. After moving to Delaware, Bob and Marilyn joined Westerville Community United Church of Christ, where they became dedicated participants in Christian education, worship and other activities.

Bob is survived not only by his wife and children, but also by his three much-loved grandchildren: Joshua Gulick of Delta, Ohio; Sarah Crail of Toledo; and Allison Haines of Westerville.

Thanks be to God for the life and ministry of Bob Haines.
