Richard J. 'Rick' Earl

Richard J. "Rick" Earl, 52, of Port Clinton, formerly of Fostoria, died 4:42 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky.

He was born Feb. 7, 1950, in Fostoria to John E. "Jack" and Carolyn (Bricker) Earl. They survive in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a son, Shawn M. Earl of Fostoria, and a daughter, Kathryn E. Earl of Columbus.

His funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 900 Van Buren St., Fostoria. Burial will be in Knollcrest Gardens, Arcadia.

Visitation will be 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria.

Wilson B. Fruth

Wilson B. Fruth, 89, of Alvada, died 12:55 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.

He was born March 7, 1913, in Biglick Township, Hancock County, to the late John A. and Emma (Blair) Fruth. He married Aimee L. Beck on Feb. 4, 1934. She died on Dec. 3, 1996.

Survivors include: two sons, Joseph E. Fruth and John N. Fruth, both of Alvada; four daughters, Arlene E. Arnold and Esther M. Johnson, both of rural Findlay, and Joyce A. Beagle of Willard and Nina L. Nuzum of Bluffton; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and a great-great grandson.

His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Coldren-Crates Funeral Home in Findlay. Burial will be in Hickory Grove cemetery, Vanlue.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Thelma Ruth (Leister) Hayashi

Thelma Ruth (Leister) Hayashi died at the Fairmont Center in Willoughby, Ohio, Sept. 8, 2002, at the age of 95. A longtime resident of Chesterland, Ohio, she was married to Dr. Shigeki Hayashi, whom she met when they both served on the staff of Women's Hospital in Cleveland.

Born in 1907 in Bloomville, Mrs. Hayashi was a registered nurse and worked closely with her new husband for over 30 years in his private practice in Chesterland.

An avid gardener, she also enjoyed music, reading and traveling. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Chesterland Study Club, the Women's Auxiliary of the Geauga County Medical Society and the League of Women Voters.

She is survived by her two daughters, Arawana Hayashi of Barnet, Vt., and Noel Hayashi of New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Brolin and Barret Winning of San Francisco, Calif, Ayla Teitelbaum of Austin, Texas, and Kobun Kaluza of New York, N.Y.; and a brother, Wayne Leister of Bloomville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Shigeki Hayashi, who died in 1983; sisters, Ferne, Gladys, Verda, Ida and Mary; and brothers Levi "L.G." and Ward.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in Christ Presbyterian Church, Chesterland. Graveside service will be at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in Woodlawn cemetery, Bloomville.

Arrangements are with the Brunner Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Mentor, Ohio.

Albert H. Jumper Jr.

Albert H. Jumper Jr., 81, of 4 N. Bobwhite Road, Wildwood, Fla., and formerly of Tiffin, died at 2:04 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Wildwood, Fla.

He was born to the late Albert H. and Dora E. (Balliet) Jumper. He married Martha J. Bowman who died on July 23, 1985. He then married Willa M. Glick. She survives in Wildwood, Fla.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Judith Ann Hart of West Barnstable, Mass., and Christine L. Jumper of Las Vegas, Nev.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a brother, Max E. Jumper of Skaneateles, N.Y.

There will no funeral or visitation.

The Tuner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ronald Eugene Simco

Ronald Eugene Simco, 51, of Tiffin Avenue, Sandusky, formerly of Clyde, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at his residence.

He was born March 31, 1951, to James L. Simco and Betty Jane (Shipley) Simco. On March 23, 1984, he married Christie (Noftz) Simco.

Surviving are: his mother, Betty Jane Simco of Clyde; his wife Christie Simco of Sandusky; a daughter, Shelly Simco; three stepsons, Jason Weiss, Kevin Weiss and Matthew Weiss, all of Clyde; five grandchildren; and a brother, John Simco of Fremont.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Brown Street, Clyde.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Clyde.

Virginia J. Lanning

Virginia J. Lanning, 85, of Blakely Care Center, North Baltimore, and formerly of North Main Street, Bloomdale, died at 8:42 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Blakely Care Center.

She was born June 15, 1917, in Bloomdale to the late Donald C. and Ruby M. (Fries) Ferguson. She married Stuart Miller; he died in 1945. She then married Glen Lanning. He died in 1985.

Surviving are a daughter, June Martin of Genoa, and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bloomdale. Burial will be in Weaver cemetery, Bloom Township.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home in Fostoria and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Lyola Corrine Lauer

Lyola Corrine Lauer, 86, formerly of 33 E. Tiffin St., New Riegel, died at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

She was born on Jan. 8, 1916, in New Riegel to Phillip and Ida (Elchert) Koby. On May 4, 1940, she married Robert N. Lauer at St. Michael Church in Findlay. He died on May 31, 1995.

Surviving are: a son, Stephen (Julie) Lauer of Urbana; two daughters, Janice Tincher of Toledo and Mrs. Judy (Joseph) Thiry of Tiffin; six grandchildren, Timothy and Todd Thiry, Sara and Susan Tincher, Jason and Jeremy Lauer; five great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Lauren Tincher, Joshua, Justin and Jessica Thiry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lester and Eldon Koby.

Mrs. Lauer was a New Riegel High School graduate. She worked for General Electric Company for 30 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Ladies of the Moose.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Riegel, with the Rev. Leonard Kistler officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio. (419)-447-3113.

The Rosary will be recited 15 minutes prior to the funeral Mass at the church.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Burnell Paul Keller

Burnell Paul Keller, 81, of SR 113, Bellevue, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Bellevue Hospital.

He was born Oct. 3, 1920, in Toledo to the late Asa and Ona Keller. On Aug. 30, 1940, he married Esther S. (Kramer) Keller She survives in Bellevue.

Other survivors include: three sons, George Keller of Bellevue, Gene Keller of Florence, Ky., and James Keller of Tiffin; three daughters, Mary Leininger and Katherine Moss, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., Joan Wise of Lawton, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister Shirley Sarvis of Toledo; and a brother, Ronald Keller.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reed Assumption Catholic Church in Bellevue. Burial will be in Reed Assumption cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Auxter Funeral Home in Bellevue.

Fay Higginbotham

Fay Higginbotham, 67, of 219 W. Findlay St., Carey, died 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky.

She was born March 1, 1935 in Johnson County, Ky. to the late Lindsey and Cora L. (Arms) Conley. On March 28, 1963, she married John Higginbotham in Nitro, W.Va. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are: two sons, John Higginbotham, Jr of Sulphur, La. and Hank Conley of Atlanta, Ga.; five daughters, Diane Hussey of Carey, Connie Phillips of Findlay, Betty Jo Twining of Carey, Tina Twining-Begley of Findlay and Tammy Higginbotham of Lexington, S.C.; three brothers, Paul Conley of Carey, Frank Conley of Pleasant Lake, Mich. and Billy Ray Conley of Jackson, Mich.; four sisters, Joyce Ann Stanley of Jackson, Mich., Opal Marshall of Marion, Ella Ree Smith of Carey, Wanda Resor of Pleasant Lake, Mich.; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Carey. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Robert E. Fosnaugh

Robert E. Fosnaugh, 74, of North CR 5, Amsden, died at 6:29 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 21, 1928, in Deshler, Ohio, to the late Wesley A. and Ella M. (Crampton) Fausnaught. He married Mildred R. Frisch in 1950, in Fostoria, and they were divorced.

Surviving are two sons, Christopher R. Fosnaugh of Dowers Grove, Ill. and Alan W. Fosnaugh of Fostoria; three daughters, Ms. Janet M. Sanchez and companion William Roberts, Mrs. Mike E. (Leda) Scott and Mrs. Don (Jo) Faeth, all of Fostoria, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were a brother, Harold Fausnaught; six sisters, Violet Tussinger, Margaret Hardin, Inez Zernel, LiLa Lee Keatley, Doris Blake and Virginia Wheeler; and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Fosnaugh, a U.S. Army veteran, retired in 1969 as a welder from the Atlas Crankshaft. He was a member of Zenobia Temple of Toledo and Masonic Temple of Fostoria.

Services and burial will be private. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, Sept. 14, at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Masonic service will be at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Seneca County or the Ohio Game and Wildlife Organization.

Charles O. Flood, Jr.

Charles O. Flood, Jr., 67, of 4591 S. SR. 19 Bloomville, died Thursday morning, September 12, 2002, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. He was born July 12, 1935 in Bettsville to Charles O. and Gouldy (Swartzmiller) Flood Sr. He married Barbara J. McVay on September 22, 1962 in Weston, Ohio, and she survives in Bloomville.

Survivors include: his mother, Mrs. Gouldy Flood of Bloomville; three sons, Ronald K. Flood of Avondale, Arizona, Samuel M. Flood of Sycamore, Brian C. Flood of Bloomville; two daughters, Jane M. Boehler of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Beverly A. Milheim of Bucyrus; a brother, Howard Flood of Bloomville; a sister, Mrs. Daryl (Betty J.) Holt of Dwight, Illinois; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Ray and Paul Henry Flood.

He was a member of the Sycamore United Church of Christ, Eden Lodge #310 F&AM in Bloomville, and Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo.

Mr. Flood was an excavating contractor, and he owned and operated Charles Flood Excavating in Bloomville, retiring in 1998.

Funeral services will be Monday morning, September 16, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR. 19, Bloomville, with The Rev. Diane Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Bloomville.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home, by Eden Lodge #310 F&AM.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Michael D. 'Mike' Young

Michael D. "Mike" Young, 49, of Oak Harbor, died Thursday at his home following an extended illness. He was born in Toledo on April 2, 1953, the son of Dennis V. & Darlene (Gaeth) Young. Mike was an employee of American Welding & Tank in Fremont for many years. He was a graduate of Oak Harbor High School where he was a member of the football team. An avid Cleveland Browns and Indian fan, Mike was also a member of the Oak Harbor Browns Backers, Ducks Unlimited, and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1989, he won a trip to San Francisco in field goal contest at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. He married the former Kim Phillips on August 3, 2002, and she survives. Also surviving is his mother, Darlene Young Wierzba, Tiffin; sons, Dennis M. (Mindy) Young, Tiffin, OH and Sean M. Young, Oak Harbor; step-sons, Terry Cain, Paul Cain, and Robert Phillips; step-daughter, Candi Fligor; and a sister, Barbara (Gene) Bates, Tiffin, OH. He was preceded in death by his father. The family will receive friends from 2-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, with the Rev. William Diehm officiatiing. Interment will be in Union cemetery, Oak Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Gertrude R. Wertman

Gertrude R. Wertman, age 81, of 534 E. Main St., Roaring Spring, Pa., died Saturday morning Sept. 14, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Kensinger.

She was born Oct. 27, 1920, in Roaring Spring, the daughter of Robert and Helen (Kagarise) Riley. She married Donald Roy Wertman Dec. 12, 1945, in Baltimore, Md. Mr. Wertman died Nov. 9, 1970.

She was a member of the Bare Memorial Church of God, Roaring Spring, where she was a member of the Tri-Mu Sunday School Class. Mrs. Wertman volunteered at the Roaring Spring Senior Center. She was a 1938 graduate of Roaring Spring High School and was a Women's Army Corps veteran of World War II. She enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzles, playing Scrabble and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Murray-Appleman American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary and was a Gold Star Mother, which signifies that she lost a son in the war.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons, Kathleen Kensinger of Roaring Spring, Pa., Mary Jo Mahon of Altoona, Pa., Valarie McGrath of Perrysburg, Thomas of Martinsburg and Brant of Roaring Spring, Pa. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; a sister, Neva Carper of Roaring Spring, Pa.; and three brothers, J. Howard "Slim" of Roaring Spring, Pa., R. Neal of Roaring Spring, Pa., and Paul A. Riley of Tiffin.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael L., who was killed in action in Vietnam; two grandchildren; and a sister, Lois E. Riley of Baltimore, Md.

Friends will be received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring, Pa., where funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor David S. Williams will be the officiant. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Roaring Spring, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may given to the Home Nursing Agency-Hospice Program, Altoona, Pa.

Billy Joe Osborne

Billy Joe Osborne, 66, of High Street, Vickery, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at his residence.

He was born March 6, 1936, in Load, Ky., to Levi Morton and Kansas (Johnson) Osborne. He marred Pearl (Bower) Osborne June 25, 1955. She survives in Vickery.

Other survivors include: three sons, Brian Osborne of Vickery, Jeff Osborne of Fremont and David Osborne of Bellevue; a daughter, Donna Osborne of Vickery; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild; three brothers, Wayne Osborne of Load, Ky., Glenn Osborne of Dayton and Orville Skaggs of Lakeview; a sister, Betty Hamilton of Dayton.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Clyde. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Joshua Bradley Caniff

Joshua Bradley Caniff, 30, of US 20 East, Bellevue, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Bellevue Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1972, in Sandusky to William and Cheryl (Bickley) Caniff. His father survives in Massachusetts and his mother survives in Huron. He married Michelle (Ries) Caniff May 4, 1996. She survives in Bellevue.

Other survivors include: grandparents, Jane Bickley of Sandusky and Ruth Ann Caniff of Pennsylvania; a sister Jessica Caniff of Bellevue; two half-sisters, Hillary Caniff and Merideth Caniff, both of Massachusetts.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Auxter-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1105 Castalia St., Bellevue. Burial will be in Trinity cemetery in Lyme Township.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruth 'Fanny' Cleary

Ruth "Fanny" Cleary, 93, died Saturday morning, Sept. 14, 2002, at the Elmwood Nursing Home, Green Springs, where she has resided the past three years.

Ruth was born in Fremont, Jan. 6, 1909, to Inez (Brubaker) and John Frank Gephart, families that have a long history in western Sandusky County. She had no siblings.

Ruth graduated as class valedictorian from the Jackson High School in 1928. The family farmed on SR 6, three miles west of Fremont for many years. While caring for her ill father, Ruth married Arthur F. Cleary (died April 1990), Dec. 5, 1937, of St. Stephens, Ohio, and moved to a country home in south Clyde in 1948. Ruth was a homemaker and regularly participated in farm women's groups, including treasurer of the Farmers Union Credit Union. She also worked at Red's Truck Stop, Kuny's Market, BiLo Restaurant, Kudro's and later as caretaker for the Molyet, Steinbauer and Miller families. Ruth was a member of the Fireside Evangelical and Reformed Church south of Bellevue, now Fireside United Church of Christ.

In later years, she regularly attended the Calvary United Methodist Church in Green Springs. Ruth is survived by: Kenneth F. Cleary, Gibsonburg; Emily L. Wadsworth, Clyde; Michael D. Cleary, Clyde; and by four grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Elmwood Nursing Home Activities Department, or the ARC (Arthur and Ruth Cleary) Scholarship Fund (for the underprivileged).

Visitation is Tuesday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Foos-Klein Funeral Home, 318 S. Main St., Clyde, OH 43419. Service is at Foos-Klein 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Rev. John Bailey will officiate, followed by internment at Bakertown cemetery, southwest of Clyde on CR 185. A reception luncheon, open to all family and friends, will follow at the First United Methodist Church, W. Maple St., in Clyde. Clyde, OH 43410
